Most of us, if not all of us have felt nervous at one time or another in our lives. Public speaking is something that makes most of us nervous. All those eyes staring straight at us. That’s a lot of attention thrust our way. We feel the butterflies take flight, and they usually don’t land until we’re done with our speech. Aren’t we glad we’re done! Nerves and other feelings like feeling scared are natural and very necessary. Ever wonder how you’d react or what would happen to you if you didn’t react to a dog running at you? How about beginning to crossing the road only to hear the roar of a car’s engine in your left ear. Run! Definitely run!

For some of us, these feelings are all to familiar and often they occur more frequently and triggered by situations that are less fear-provoking than those, and others like it, mentioned above. I’ve felt that rush of adrenaline pumping through my heart as I turned into the street the underground station is on and the view of it made my heart beat a thousand to every second. I’d be gripped by the thought of seeing my desk, or my boss, which I knew was coming sooner than I wanted. They’d find out soon enough: I’m just average. Nothing special here. I’d spend the entire journey on the underground screaming inside myself. Looking at the other passengers, silently screaming ‘Have you all gone completely mad!?’. Completely and utterly unable to understand why anyone would not see it my way. This is my anxiety. What’s yours?

An irrational fear is a good way of describing it. Admittedly, I was in the middle of a breakdown that eventually pressed the Pause button on my life for a few years after. But this a good example of anxiety. Irrational fear that gets in the way of leading a normal life: that’s anxiety.

I learnt a lot about anxiety in the months that followed. It was all new to me. The education, certainly not the feelings and symptoms. Often, it left me speechless and bewildered. All those symptoms and I didn’t have a clue. But what are those symptoms? Well, thinking that everything will result in the worst possible outcome is the most upsetting symptom (for myself at least). You are mentally consumed with it. It breaks your concentration, erases your short-term memory and strips your patience down to almost nothing. It can stop you from falling asleep. Sleep anxiety was something I didn’t recognise. I simply thought I had developed insomnia on top of all my other problems. The more the merrier? Not quite. I had become severely depressed and obsessional. Two more symptoms associated with anxiety.

All these mental or cognitive symptoms affect our body function. I’d feel like I was losing my breath, no matter how hard I tried to relax or perform deep-breathing exercises. If I thought about it, which of course I did, my heart would start to race and the adrenaline would flow through me. You can completely lose your appetite, feel the need to constantly urinate, develop headaches more often and for me, the dizziness was unbearable. I thought I had low blood pressure. My doctor thought I may have a problem with my heart. Going for an ECG will scare the life out of you, if nothing else. Pins and needles are also symptoms of anxiety. I used to get them in my upper arms which would scream ‘Heart Attack!’ to me, but somehow I would push that thought away.’

We don’t all develop the same symptoms and it is quite rare that someone would present with all the symptoms as a textbook case. Some of the symptoms I didn’t develop were muscle aches and tremors, excessive thirst and stomach upsets. Women can develop painful periods or even none at all. We can all lose response to sexual stimulation too.

Anxiety and Depression

Feeling anxious is a natural and perfectly normal response to stressful situations or events like a driving test, job interview or medical examination. It is part of the body’s fight or flight reflex so helps us to cope with any perceived threat or danger.

Some symptoms associated with anxiety include:

• Rapid heartbeat
• Tightness in the chest
• Breathlessness
• Diarrhoea
• Dry mouth
• Frequent urination
• Sweating
• Light headedness
• Difficulty swallowing

In some people, and nobody really knows exactly why, attacks of anxiety can become prolonged, happen repeatedly, and are severe enough to interfere with their ability to carry out normal routines and activities. If this is the case then they may be diagnosed as suffering from an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety Disorders

Along with the physical symptoms of anxiety, the individual can feel irritable, unable to concentrate or focus, not in control of their actions and could feel they are losing it or going completely mad. There are several different types of anxiety disorders.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder – the person feels anxious, nervous or keyed up a lot of the time, often about minor stresses at work or at home or perhaps without even knowing why they are feeling anxious.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – a variety of symptoms can follow a severe or life threatening trauma including a lot of anxiety, recurrent and distressing memories, thoughts, images, or feelings associated with the trauma that interferes with normal daily life

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Recurrent thoughts and urges (obsessions) that result in repetitive thoughts or actions (compulsions) in order to relieve the anxiety brought on by the obsessions. For example, obsession about dirt evokes a compulsion to repeatedly wash hands

Phobia – an extreme fear of something that is not in proportion to the reality to the extent that even thinking about it can evoke anxiety and panic, for example, fear of experiencing an embarrassing or awkward situation from which there is no escape, or fear of leaving a safe place (agoraphobia) may prevent someone leaving the house

Panic Disorder – Recurrent panic attacks with a severe attack of anxiety and fear that happens without warning and for no apparent reason

According to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), 5% of the population in the UK have Generalised Anxiety Disorder and 1% suffer from Panic Disorder. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to get the appropriate treatment as anxiety can also be a symptom of other conditions including an underlying illness or substance abuse, and anxiety will often accompany some form of depression.

Depression

Feeling a bit low or down in the dumps from time to time is quite normal, but if the symptoms don’t go away after a couple of weeks and are affecting your normal routines, then it is possible that you are suffering from depression. Around 10% of the population in the UK suffer from depression at any one time.

Some symptoms associated with depression include:

• Feeling tired and lethargic for most of the time
• Persistent low moods and sadness, a feeling of despondency
• Sleep disturbances, either inability to sleep or sleeping too much
• A pessimistic outlook on life
• Feeling anxious and nervous
• Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
• Frightening and irrational thoughts
• Loss of pleasure in activities and lack of interest in sex
• Avoidance of social contact and social situations
• Loss of appetite or an increased appetite and associated weight loss or weight gain
• Emotional outbursts for no apparent reason
• Irritability

Depression can affect anyone at any time but some people are more at risk than others, for example, the long term sick and unemployed, the socially isolated, those in prison, anyone with a previous history of depression themselves or in their family or anyone battling with drug or alcohol addiction. Life changing events can sometimes precipitate an episode of depression, for example, redundancy, divorce, physical illness and disability or bereavement.

Sometimes people will seek help from their GP with symptoms of both anxiety and depression.

Mixed Anxiety and Depression

According to government statistics, in the year 2000 only 2.8% of the population suffered from depression without any symptoms of anxiety whereas just over 9% of adults in Britain were suffering from mixed anxiety and depression and this figure had increased from previous years suggesting that the numbers are growing. No one knows exactly what causes either anxiety or depression because there is no single cause; however, there are certain factors that appear to contribute to both anxiety and depressive disorders and these include the possibility of chemical imbalances in the brain, a genetic tendency, personality and personal life experiences or a combination of these factors. Treatment will usually consist of a mixed approach involving medication and psychotherapy techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy.

Standardized Final Exams for Arizona Schools — Better for the Students or Just Another Measurement for the State?

There is currently a bill in the Arizona state legislature, proposing that the state create standardized final exams for specific core high school courses within the Arizona schools. The bill was introduced by the Senate Education Committee Chairman and has the support of many key educational figures.

Arizona schools chief Tom Horne supports the bill, as does several educational researchers. Paul Koehler, director of WestEd (a nonprofit research agency) also lends support, stating that state standardized final exams gives the state and Arizona schools a “broader and more logical profile” of Arizona schools students’ performance.

Along with high school core courses, art and music also would receive the Arizona schools’ standardized final exams; and grades three, six and seven would receive state-designed final exams in social studies.

Each district within the Arizona schools could choose to administer only the state final exams or in addition to their own exams.

The idea of standardized end-of-course exams comes from the Advanced Placement courses that allow Arizona schools’ students to earn college credits while in high school. Other states already successfully use the state standardized final exam system. New York gives special diplomas to their students who successfully pass the state standardized end-of-course exams.

Consistency and Accountability State standardized testing for the Arizona schools is believed to ensure consistency in teaching across the state. The Arizona schools can, at the state level, determine if individual schools are offering the same quality teaching and learning as schools in other areas of the state. Arizona State University professor Thomas Haladyna believes the state-design and mandated final exams will allow the Arizona schools to determine if children are receiving a good education, eliminating the haphazard teaching that occurs in the schools today and instituting a more systematic approach to teaching.

Enough Is Enough Currently, the teachers or districts design final exams for all coursework. The Mesa school system is the largest district in the Arizona schools. They already use district-wide final exams that are created by district teachers, who meet to design the end-of-course exams. Their testing director Joe O’Reilly voiced concerns that the district will lose the local involvement they currently have with state-mandated and designed final exams. He questions the lose of immediacy that the district now has, where exams are given, graded and returned the next day. Besides losing more control to the state, O’Reilly cannot understand how a multiple-choice test can measure student performance in music, painting, or in a chemistry lab.

Arizona schools’ parents already complain to school administrators of the amount of homework their children receive in reading, writing and math classes. They continually question whether the overload of work is to help their children learn or to raise the schools’ test scores on the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) exam, securing more funding for the schools.

Arizona schools parents have a right to be concerned, since the proposed final exams will not be used to determine student promotion to the next grade or whether a child graduates high school or not. The Arizona schools’ standardized state final exams only determine the rating of each school’s performance and will be used along with AIMS test scores and other factors, such as graduation and student attendance rates.

Why Your Panic Attacks are Dangerous

Have you ever wondered why a panic attack often feels quite so horrifying? Well now we have the answer, because Australian and American scientists have proved what we’ve all long suspected: that high levels of stress can make us very sick indeed!

The new field of neuro-psycho-physio-immunology (what a mouthful!), is providing massive amounts of evidence which shows that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours all impact on our immune system and our general health.

What diseases are stress related?

It’s widely accepted that stress related diseases include sick euthyroid syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and even some cancers.

What you can do about it

Obviously the best thing we can do is to be aware of how important it is to have a healthy lifestyle with the right amount of work and play, social contact, nutrition and sleep, etc. But for some people things have gone too far and they suffer from a range of problems like depression, chronic pain, anxiety, panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

The problem for these people is that conventional treatments have not been very successful, with very low outcomes and often only temporary relief.

Good News

A new treatment method has recently been launched after over a decade of research with over 50,000 in-patients and out-patients throughout Latin America and Australia. This new method is called BMSA and works by actually knocking out conditioned responses associated with problem states like anxiety.

A Brief Example of BMSA

You can try it out for yourself very easily, as long as you promise you’ll pick something very minor to experiment on! BMSA should not be used with serious disorders except by qualified health professionals!

Simply think of something that would qualify as a “mild anger”. This might be the thought of someone who recently upset you, for example. How strong is your “mild anger” over this person and what they did? Use a scale of 10 to set a figure (10 out of 10 would be the maximum and would tell you this is too big for this experiment! 0 out of 10 would mean that you had no particular anger at all. Pick something that is 5 or less on the scale.)

Now as you think about this person and what they did, see if you can rub your tummy and pat your head at the same time (try very hard and definitely don’t let yourself be distracted!), and alternate this with imagining the scenario at the same time that you imagine your mouth is full of chocolate cake, or that you’re laying on a sandy beach, or that you’re rocking a baby in your arms (try all sorts of things, as long as you’re able to keep the thoughts of the person and what they did in your head!)

Keep this up for perhaps 5 minutes, and then quietly bring back the thought of the person and what they did. Is your “mild anger” still the same, or now, try as you may, do you find that it’s decreased or even disappeared altogether?

In a few days’ time, try think of this person and what they did once more. Was the effect permanent, or merely temporary? What could happen if you could eliminate all your emotional distress in this way?

Prepare for panic attacks

When humans began to evolve they developed an instinct for danger. This response made their bodies get ready to fight for survival or run away until they were in a position that would aid their living. This state is called a fight or flight reaction. That emotional state has survived into our present day lives. However the feelings that arise from this can lead to panic attacks as our bodies have no way of getting rid of the excess adrenaline that is present because of the fight or flight response.

Panic attacks instigate extreme and exaggerated fear and disability that are more than the normal feeling of fear. The severity of panic attacks and its sudden and episodic attacks are so chronic and intense that when it happens, there is hardly anything that can be done to eliminate it. These attacks are often self provoking without any events or conditions that pose danger or threats to that persons mind. Hence, no rational explanation can be offered for such fight or flight reaction triggered by panic attacks.

There are a number of symptoms that can be found in a victim of panic attacks. A racing or pounding heart, difficulty in breathing, feeling as if you are struggling to get air, paralyzing terror, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, trembling, excessive sweating, shaking, choking, chest pains, hot flashes, sudden chills, tingling in your fingers or toes (otherwise called pins and needles) and the overwhelming fear that you are going to die.

When a person experiences or perceives a dangerous or risky encounter, the above symptoms are stimulated. However, panic attacks hit a person under no apparent threats or dangers in an intense manner physically and mentally. The chain reaction of fearful thoughts, escalating physical responses and feelings of terror and desperation are all underway. This can happen at anytime and any place in the absence of any stimuli even when a person is sleeping at night.

Panic attacks cannot or difficult to stop when it attacks and they normally happen without any potential signals or predictions. This is because the excessive level of hormones imbalances and adrenalines that flood the body and muscles causes such extreme terror and desperation that are so beyond the grasp of the actual situation. It is therefore not only necessary but compulsory to attempt to control the exaggerated emotions of fear using different appropriate means of treatments.

The sudden surge of overwhelming fear that is experienced by the person hit with panic attack can be so extreme and devastating that even few minutes into the attack feels like forever to him or her.

Terror, to the normal people living normal lives, is part and parcel of our lives and the evolution. To victims of panic attacks, they are constantly and relentlessly facing the fear and terror everyday of their lives. There are a great variety of treatment techniques and therapies available in the marketplace for curing the panic attack and disorder.
