How to Care for Your Bufo Alvarius Toad

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

The Bufo Alvarius toad can live for quite a long time in captivity. The Sonoran Desert toad, in general, lives for five to fifteen years, but one toad lived to 36, although it was not a Bufo Alvarius. But if you have gone to all the trouble of searching the Sonoran Desert to find them, or have purchased either a single or a pair of Bufo Alvarius toads from a reputable source, such as Bouncing Bear Botanicals, you will surely want to give it or them proper care so they will live a long time and give you many years of pleasure.

The first care tip is handling. You should handle your toad as little as possible, and, especially if you have other pets in your home, always wash your hands both prior to and subsequent to touching your toad. This is because the skin of an amphibian is permeable, which is to say it is porous, and any toxic substances on your hands may easily be absorbed into their bloodstream. The reason why you should always wash your hands after touching the toad is because of the venom glands located on their head and legs. The toad venom has a milky appearance, and it may be sufficiently toxic to kill a small cat or dog. It can also cause serious irritation to eyes and nose, so make sure never to touch your face until after your hands have been cleaned.

Toads are sensitive to light, sound and vibrations, so their housing should be kept in a quiet place where there is not a lot of noise and goings-on. Never put their aquarium on top of a stereo speaker or TV set, or even near them, because the vibrations are not good for them. Toads are nocturnal animals. They rest in the day time and come out at night, so the place where you house your Bufo Alvarius toad should not be too brightly lit.

Probably the best place to keep your toads would be in an aquarium of a twenty gallon size or larger. These toads are very large and they are excellent at jumping, so make sure their aquarium has a cover that fits snugly. During the day, they like to burrow into the ground to conceal themselves, so the aquarium should have a floor made not with soil but with chunks of bark, smooth stones that are too big for them to swallow, peat moss or sphagnum moss that has been dried. These are cold-blooded animals, which means their body temperature comes from their environment, so keep your Bufo Alvarius in a place where the temperature ranges from 24 to 27 C or 75 to 80 F. Their living space should not be wet, but they do need a bowl of non-chlorinated water. They don’t drink the water, but they immerse themselves in it, absorbing it through their skin.

Feeding your pet toad should not be too problematic if you live in an area where there are lots of insects such as crickets, or at least a pet shop that sells them. In the wild, they eat anything from small rodents and fish to bees, wasps and scorpions. These Colorado River toads even eat smaller frogs and toads.

If you keep your toad’s accommodations clean and comfortable, and take proper steps to look after them, you should be able to enjoy the company of your Bufo Alvarius for many years.

Insider Information on Auto Repairs

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Believe it or not, there is an industry out there that specifically looks out on and actually promote auto repairs. Such a racket is not only unethical, it is also inappropriate and unnecessary. Still, there are those who do it – for the sake of one reason and one reason alone — money.

The following are discovered and frowned upon scams that have been already charged. Yet they do still require your utmost attention. Read on and be aware as well as be wary so as to not be a victim further from such rip-offs.

The repair scare

It was in 1992 when people discovered and got scared when everyone learned that the Auto Center at Sears were actually promoting, and even made it an actual competition among its staff, the number of any additional car repairs that came in to the extent that the one who was able to gather in the most car repairs was declared as a quota winner.

Though Sears, at first, did not want to admit it. Sears was actually giving out commissions and even established contests, declaring as a winner anyone who were able to bring in the most auto repairs. This discovery became even more shocking when it was learned that the prizes for such contests even included a cruise and ten thousand dollars in cash.

When Sears was confronted with the issue, their claim was that the repairs they do were merely measures that were done in order to prevent any other car faults. Although they did later admit their mistakes and agreed to fork up a total of eight million dollars in order to settle the charges filed against them in California. The damage has been done though, and the impression created by such allegations is enough to make anyone suspect any auto repair shop as similarly engaging in such an illicit trade.

Thankfully, they were able to make amends to a total of nine hundred thousand of their customers. Plus, they no longer were using commissions, quotas and contests to promote car repairs.

However, there may still be instances wherein large chains of auto repair shops still resort to advertisements that deceive or there may be auto shops that engage in fraud. There may still be shops out there which replace good auto parts with faulty ones.

Investigations done undercover as well as lawsuits have been filed against such chains. Still, it does help being alert and aware.

Caught in the act

In 1999, a television station in Los Angeles made undercover discoveries at auto repair shops – including those from Goodyear, Purrfect Auto, Pep Boys – wherein repairs were done and recommended on cars that did not need any repairs.

In 1998, it was known there have been ninety auto repair shops found in five counties in which forty percent of these sold services and provided car repairs that were unnecessary. These shops even charged its customers services and repairs that were never even done!

Such shops were named as Midas Muffler and Brake Shops, Purrfect Auto Service, Econo Lube N’ Tune as well as Tuneup Masters.

All in all, it helps to know such information in order to not be a victim of such unscrupulous methods. Awareness and alertness is important. It also helps if one searches through the internet and learn how good or how bad a particular auto repair shop’s record is. Knowledge is power.

Five Signs of a Great Leader

Last Updated: 2011/10/01

When we think of successful leaders, we often think of people like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Mahatma Mohandas Gandhi, people who have made a difference in the lives of millions.

Whether it’s a leadership of millions, thousands, hundreds, or just a few dozen, there are certain attributes of a leader that shine through. Though some may assume that great leaders are born and not made, we know that’s not true. With the right motives, training, hard work and persistence you too can be a great leader. It doesn’t matter if your desire is to be the leader of a large company, a new church or your own little family the attributes are the same.

1. Desire: First and foremost is your desire to lead. Leadership takes a great deal of work, so what motivates you? The prime motivator is usually passion. Passion to be the best company, the fastest growing company; the church helping more people than any other, a force in the community, or the happiest, most grounded family unit. Passion to be the biggest, the best is a powerful motivator. Ask yourself what you most want to achieve in your life and the life of others. Then guide your group to creating even more motivation. Keep in mind the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “Nothing great is ever achieved without passion.”

2. Vision: It can be a vision of what you want your company to achieve, what difference you want to make in your community or the vision you have for your children and their future. Write down your vision, flesh it out and know precisely what that vision entails. Know how you’ll get from Point A to Point B. You can’t make a plan without a detailed vision of what you hope to achieve.

3. Creativity: This is where your plan starts. You have the vision of what you want to achieve, now you set it out step by step. You know where you want to end up, but you need the road map to get there, the plan to get you and your workers, family or parishioners to the ultimate goal. This is where you ask your people the challenging questions and get them running with the ideas you’ve generated and inspire them to be creative as well. John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

4. Expertise: Naturally, the more expert you are concerning your company, or community or family, the better. You must hone your information gathering abilities. Knowledge is power. It’s also essential that your people recognize and respect your expertise and trust your abilities to lead them. Let your group see you as the expert, and know they can trust you to guide them to success.

5. Respect: Respect for others is an essential attribute in a great leader. You should compliment others when they show progress. Always praise in public and condemn in private. This shows respect for your workers, family and parishioners as fellow human beings. As the leader of any group, it’s your responsibility to help them sort out their conflicts. Remember, their problems are your problems. Acknowledge their strengths and their weaknesses. On the positive side, you should also help them celebrate their achievements and accomplishments. And you should listen to their ideas and suggestions, and then let them help you implement them. This will fire up their motivation in doing the required tasks.

Remember, “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” Rosalynn Carter.
