Ford Flex: the first full-size crossover utility vehicle

A new crossover is on its way, although this may no longer be surprising since it seems like every other automaker has a new crossover to present but according to San Antonio Express News this crossover is quite different.

The crossover that the San Antonio Express News is referring to is none other than the 2009 Ford Flex which was introduced as the first full-size crossover utility vehicle at the New York Auto Show —and this exactly what makes this crossover distinct from the rest of its competitors.

Until today, crossovers have ranged from the original mini-sized models such as all-new Ford Edge, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, and the Suzuki XL-7. For this year the full-size SUVs that are available on the market are all truck-based models like the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

The Flex will help expand Ford’s already good selection of crossovers comprising of the compact Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner—both of which also come in gasoline-electric hybrid versions. Moreover, Ford sells the Edge, based on the chassis of the Fusion midsize sedan, while the Freestyle was based on the chassis of the larger Five Hundred sedan. For 2008 Ford will rename the Five Hundred to become the new Taurus, and the Freestyle to become the Taurus X.

Last year, crossover shows a strong sales return as compared to the traditional SUVs and most auto analysts believes that such trend will continue for this year. Also, for this year it is observed that the truck-based SUVs are somewhat going out of style similar to the way when minivans lost their market dominance.

Ford, which is also has Mazda, maker of quality Mazda truck parts and Mazda truck accessories as a subsidiary, said that the sales of crossovers in the US market are expected to reach three million units annually by the end of the decade. According to Mark Fields, Ford’s President for the Americas at the New York introduction, “Flex is another example of Ford creating more of the products that our customers really want. Ford intends to define crossover vehicles this decade just as we did SUVs in the 1990s.”

Last March Ford’s crossover sales in the US rose to more than 40 percent compared to the same period last year according to the automaker. Ford also confirms that the production of the Expedition will continue even after the Flex arrives. However if gasoline prices continuous to increase and consumers would abandon the traditional truck style SUVs in favor of crossovers then the production of the Expedition would then be reconsidered.

Ford spokesman Harold Allen said, “Expedition sales actually have been growing the past four months. The people who need the Expedition are still out there and are still buying it. One reason is the great towing capacity of the Expedition.”

Despite the fact that both Flex and the Expedition can accommodate seven people, the Expedition can actually pull trailers weighing up to 9,000 lbs while the Flex is limited to hauling 4,000 lbs only. The Expedition appeal to people with bigger trailers while those people who are interested in plain transport would prefer the Flex.

As of now the Flex remains to the only full-size crossover utility vehicle but since it would be made available in summer of 2008 it is not impossible that other automakers can have the same big crossover launched a little earlier and that would be not be good for the Flex.

Honda Matures In The Industry

The Honda Manufacturing of Alabama LLC earlier announced a new $64.5 million expansion project. The project of the Japanese auto manufacturer, which is set to begin on May 1, is expected to create 20 new jobs.

The HMA’s new project also include 27,000 square feet of extra building space that will house and operate a steel banking facility alongside the present steel stamping lines. The project also covers the multi-million dollar expansion to continuously enhance Honda’s annual vehicle turnaround to more than 300,000 units.

“The addition of a steel banking facility will offer improved efficiency in costs, quality and delivery for our Alabama manufacturing operations,” said Mark Morrison, the manager of corporate affairs and communication for the HMA. “We believe the investment and additional employment offered by this new venture also will benefit our customers and the community.”

With a motion from the District 1 Commissioner Ed Lackey and a second from the District 5 Commissioner John Carter, the commission approved the tax abatement of the company for sales, use, and property taxes. Land abatements will last over a period of a decade for each piece of property and start on a property-by-property basis.

As estimated by experts, Honda will receive a $167,700 break from the annual amount of non-educational ad valorem taxes and $1,710,000 which has been abated from estimated construction-related transaction taxes.

The agreement stated that Honda and Talladega County each agree to pay its own costs and expenses related to the abatement. The county will not charge HMA a fee to secure the abatements and the company will continue to be primarily liable for the agreement to be carried out as stated. “Anything that will bring more jobs in for the county is a wonderful project,” said Commissioner Jimmy Roberson. “The abatements will go away, but those jobs are here to stay.”

HMA, at present, employs over 4,500 associates. In the state of Alabama, the company has a total of $1.3 billion investment. Since October 2006, the company has shown plans for a $91 million additional investment and this project will bring the manufacturing company to well over the $100 million mark.

Honda is most notable in the manufacture of both automobiles and motorcycles. But it is also famed in the manufacture of trucks, scooters, jets and jet engines, robots, ATV, water craft, electrical generators, lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, and aeronautical and other mobile technologies. The automaker, headquartered in Tokyo, produces state-of-the-art auto parts accessories like the Honda fender, engines, radiator, filter, and more.

Toyota Camry Production Commences In Indiana

The Toyota Motor Corp. and the Subaru of Indiana automotive (SIA) earlier started the production of the Camry in Indiana. The joint venture of the Japanese automaker was made public in March last year. Said venture include the production of Toyota Camry at SIA.

A $230 million investment gives SIA the capacity to produce 100,000 Camry units annually. The Toyota Camry production will add 1,000 associates for a total of more than 3,200 at SIA. Attending the ceremony were FHI president Ikuo Mori and Toyota Motor Corporation president Katsuaki Watanabe. They commended SIA associates and Toyota team members involved in the project’s development for their hard work and commitment to building America’s best-selling car at SIA.

Mori said, “Production of the Camry at SIA represents an important start to our business collaboration with Toyota. Together, we were able to accomplish this goal in a short period of time through the efforts of all associates involved in this project.” Watanabe added, “Fuji and Toyota faced many challenges for Camry production, including a short amount of preparation time, and we are grateful for the hard work of our associates and team members. We look forward to growing a long-term relationship with Fuji, SIA and the local community.”

The new generation Camry is a redesigned version of the car. It is assembled at the Toyota’s Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky and at the Toyota Manufacturing in Aichi, Japan, in Melbourne, Australia. The new Camry does not only feature the striking Toyota fender, it is also equipped with the potent 2.4 L VVT-i I4 as the previous generation and come in four trim levels: CE, LE, SE, and XLE. The optional 3.5 L VVT-i V6 engine that produces 268 horsepower is available with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a manual shift mode.

The Toyota Camry also features a navigation system with Bluetooth and heated leather seats (for the SE and the V6-powered XLE). Also, a keyless entry starter is made optional on the V6-powered XLE. The models intended for the American market typically feature JBL branded radios. Higher end models are made “satellite receiver ready” for Sirius Satellite Radio or XM receiver ready. The CE and LE have hubcap designs identical to its ancestors. The rear of the Camry features catchy headlight, grille, and the controversial “Bangle-butt.”

“The Camrys are rolling and so is Indiana,” said Governor Mitch Daniels. “We are honored by the new investment in our state and the confidence in Hoosier workers.” To express thanks to the local community for its support, SIA and the fast rising Japanese automaker announced a $60,000 donation to the Columbian Park Zoo for its owl exhibit.

In addition to the Camry, SIA builds the Subaru Tribeca, Outback and the Legacy. SIA produced about 120,000 Subarus in 2006.

UAW Weighs Bid For Chrysler

The United Auto Workers (UAW) is reviewing a long shot proposal from a group of Chrysler Group workers in Toledo who are thriving employee ownership of the ailing American division of DaimlerChrysler AG.

The “Employee Buyout Committee,” a group composed of about 25 hourly workers, is proposing that workers take a 70 percent stake in Chrysler with Daimler retaining the remaining stake. Michele Mauder, a member of the committee who works at Chrysler’s Toledo Supplier Park, where the Jeep Wrangler is manufactured, said that the workers believe employee ownership is the best option for Chrysler’s 50,000 UAW workers.

In an interview, Mauder added, “The bottom line is the corporation won’t take the hit, it’s the employees, the shareholders and the consumers. So we need to work as a team. The employee buyout committee was notified by the UAW last month that its proposal is being evaluated by the union’s legal department.”

The proposal was mentioned by a shareholder at Daimler’s annual meeting. On Tuesday, Mauder received a written notification from Daimler that the proposal is being reviewed. Roger Kerson, the UAW spokesman, could not be reached for comment late Thursday. Chrysler spokesman Mike Aberlich, on the other hand, said that the proposal from the employee group was sent to Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda and is “expected to be reviewed by the company’s legal department.”

Mauder anticipates that the proposal will be discussed at a Daimler supervisory board meeting this week. “Unless they come up with a better plan, this is it,” said Mauder. She noted that Chrysler workers owned shares in the company in the 1980s after Chrysler turned to the federal government for loans to bail it out of a financial crisis. “It’s really in Daimler’s ball court now.”

“The issue here is employee ownership is both a long shot and a slippery slope,” said Harley Shaiken, a labor expert at the University of California, Berkeley. “So much depends on the details and the structure of the reorganized company.”

Mauder sent a letter on April 9 to plead the employees’ case to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. “It appears the sale of Chrysler may not only affect our employees and retirees, but essentially could affect the entire automobile industry depending on who acquires our company,” Mauder wrote. “One never knows until one asks. By no means do we want to interfere with any potential sale of Chrysler. Mr. Zetsche, you have made the statement that all options are on the table. Our committee would hope that this option would be held in comparison to the other possible offers.”

The high-definition acceleration behind the potential purchase of Chrysler could be likened to the power given off by an Accel ignition. Although the workers would prefer Chrysler remain with the German automaker, the letter said, “If DaimlerChrysler is adamant to sell and Magna (International Inc.) would be the leading contender, our committee would prefer the option of partnership with them versus a private equity firm. Magna, the Canadian operations, had an established employee equity and profit participation program.”

Daimler is currently in negotiations with potential Chrysler purchasers, including two of the country’s biggest private equity firms, Cerberus Capital Management LP and Blackstone Group, which is working with Centerbridge Capital Partners. Also in the running is Magna, which has partnered with Onex Corp., a Canadian buyout firm.

The UAW President Ron Gettelfinger has said the private equity bidders for Chrysler also have talked to the union about giving workers a stake in the automaker. But Gettelfinger has repeatedly said he would like Daimler to keep Chrysler and pledged to use his seat on the 20-member DaimlerChrysler supervisory board to oppose any deal that takes Chrysler private. The supervisory board meets next week in Germany. Other labor representatives on DaimlerChrysler’s board have said they wouldn’t support a bidder that would break up the company.

Mauder said that she has researched employee stock ownership and is working with a team of experts on the subject from Kent State University. The group is hoping to get the support of local unions and to finally join them in their struggle.

Study Shows Chevy Blazer Has Highest Driver Fatality Rate

According to a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), General Motors Corp. vehicles had the highest and lowest driver fatality rates from 2002 through 2005. And the highest rate is linked to Chevy Blazers.

The study found that the Chevrolet Blazer which comes as a two-door, two-wheel drive SUV built from 2001 to 2004, had the highest rate of driver fatalities which amounts to 232 per million registered vehicles during the four-year duration.

The Blazer was launched in 1969 on the C/K pickup truck chassis that produces GM’s trucks. In 1970, the largest automaker introduced Jimmy – its own model of the truck which was produced until the arrival of GMC Yukon in 1992. The Blazer is replaced by the Chevrolet Tahoe which is now a full-size SUV.

The Blazer and Jimmy, based on the short wheelbase trucks, were made available with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Its long wheelbase sibling is called the Chevrolet Suburban. Both the K5 Blazer and the Jimmy were given fabulous removable tops for the first few years until 1976 when the half-cab body style was launched. In 1983, the S-10 Blazer and S-15 Jimmy, all smaller models, were introduced. The original Blazer and Jimmy remained in production until 1991.

The AAA (American Automobile Association) and Parents magazine named the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe and the Entourage as two of 2007′s ‘Best Cars for Families.’

This year is the magazine’s fifth time to give the 15-vehicle list consisting of the best vehicles in different segments. The list is coupled with detailed reviews of the auto models in the April issue of Parents magazine. AAA’s auto-safety experts and Parents’ editors, who meticulously weighed the capabilities and attributes of the vehicles to support the needs and wants of families, created a list of sedans, economy cars, SUVs, vans, and crossovers that they believe will perfectly meet the everyday demands of the family.

According to AAA/Parents’ judges, “The Santa Fe is packed with safety technology to protect your little ones, but the modest price tag leaves something for their college funds. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and side-impact and side-curtain air bags are standard. Nice surprises include second-row A/C vents to keep your kids cool and a heated windshield wiper for melting through the ice.” After a road test with the Hyundai Santa Fe, Sally Lee, the editor-in-chief of Parents magazine said, “I loved the easy-to-read instrument panel and the great storage space. The 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, a midsize crossover SUV based on the Sonata platform, was introduced at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The first production of the vehicle, which shares the assembly line with the Sonata, rolled off the automaker’s Montgomery, Alabama assembly line.

The new Santa Fe bears semblance with the Toyota Motor Corp.’s RAV4 model. The crossover features noteworthy safety features like the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), side curtain airbags for all seating rows, active front head restraints, a tire pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes. The Santa Fe is also equipped with a heated windshield wiper grid located in the front wipers’ ‘park’ position to help thaw ice buildup on the blades in colder climates. The interior of the crossover was modified to enhance styling and appeal. Sensata Technologies Introduces Advanced Auto Seat Sensors

Sensata Technologies earlier demonstrated various approaches regarding auto occupant sensing. The demonstration is also aimed at helping engineers design seat belt alert systems that are more precise in order to offer an improved level of consumer safety and convenience.

The company, which was previously called the Sensors & Controls business of Texas Instruments, showed its new pride which is called as the piezo electric sensor. It also flaunted the current Monocrystalline Silicon Strain Gauge (MSG) force sensor. The sensors gave engineers a range of design options and they make new seat belt alert systems more dependable and ‘consumer friendly.’ The sensors also showcase an edge that could boost air bag classification systems.

The new piezo electric sensor is deemed the solution to the traditional weight. The problem occurs when detection systems get confused about differentiating between a person or a heavy object such as a box, bag of groceries, and the like thus creating irritating false seat belt alerts. A piezo electric wire, which is mated to a pad that is easily mounted under the seat cushion to deliver input to an electronic module, senses the frequency response of a human. As such, it can determine the relative position of the passenger.

“Consumers will use seat belt alerts that accurately determine if a passenger is really in the car. A box or laptop bag won’t annoy them anymore because the system thinks it’s a person,” said Michael Mainvielle, the market segment manager at Sensata Technologies.

The Sensata piezo sensor is engineered to be conveniently integrated into a variety of seat structures, including A- or B-surface mounting. It also accommodates all seat covering options including ventilated seats. Additionally, a three-position sensor is made available for rear seats. The sensor also is designed to complement the overall performance of the vehicle without compromising safety and ergonomics. The Monocrystalline Silicon Strain Gauge Pressure (MSG) Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS) that uses a silicon MEMS strain gauge element glass bonded to a stainless steel diaphragm. Four MSG sensors could be conveniently mounted within the seat structure to make accurate weight measures for safe airbag deployment and compliance to the FMVSS208. The sensors are available in a wide variety of designs including an axial or flange rigid sensor, a rigid sensor with a Stress Reduction Component (SRC); or an SRC at flange center style. These options from Sensata Technologies offer designers a plethora of styling and mounting flexibility.

Mercedes-Benz gift for itself on its 40th birthday

Mercedes-Benz marked the 40th year of its being an AMG inhauls performance specialist and its being a superlative producer in the auto arena by releasing an elegant version of its F1 safety car – the Black Edition AMG CLK63. The safety car is the European version of what we know as a pace car.

The name, Black, suggests gloom but when it was introduced in New York, it lit up the city.

With no flashing light bars and F1 tape in sight, the street legal sedan looked mean sporting a 500 horses 6.3 liter V8 engine power plant which does 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds with an overall top speed of 300 km/h. Amazing. Isn’t it?

Small yet with a huge fender flare on each of the four sides at top most part of the wheels . That describes the Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series.

With orange, yellow or purple paint, the CLK Black Series is fitted with several substantial hardware upgrades. Most noticeable are the carbon-fiber fender flares that make room for 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and 265/30R19 Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires at the front and 285/30R19s at the back. These are comparable to truck fender flares because of their size. Composite brake discs are placed behind those wheels and they are similarly massive, measuring 14.2 inches in front and 13.0 inches in back.

Mercedes-Benz said in a press release that a sport exhaust system helps the CLK63 AMG Black Series produce 500 horsepower versus the 475 horses found in the standard CLK63 AMG. But there are no big changes to the AMG-built V8. A limited-slip differential gives an added measure of traction, which helps the CLK Black Series get to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. The automaker further said its top speed is electronically restricted to 186 mph only.

Up front, the Black Series cosmetic upgrades include the air dam, bigger air inlets and an extra set of cutouts to feed air to a secondary transmission cooler. At the back, a carbon-fiber air diffuser finishes off the otherwise untouched body shell.

A cousin of the race-inspired CLKs, the Black Series car will be sold in the U.S. starting this summer.

Auto experts expect small volume at a huge price.

Use glass cleaner to wash the inside of windows. Spray the cleaner directly on the cloth to avoid streaking and getting the cleaner on the upholstery.

On hard surfaces, a household all-purpose cleaner will do. It will clean any remaining dirt on your dashboard, rubber door moldings, and interior trim. Again, spray the cleaner directly on a clean cloth. Clean tight areas such as air vents, panel seams, and radio buttons with a dampened soft toothbrush, cotton swab, or small paintbrush. Also, do not forget to clean the safety-belt buckles, change drawer, glove compartment, and ashtray.

For the final touches, apply conditioner that suits your car. A second vacuuming is also important to remove dirt dislodged during the cleaning process. If you still have noticeable odors after such a vigorous cleaning, use an odor-removal product designed to get smells out of fabrics.

Ford Introduces Roush F-150 Propane-Powered vehicle

Roush is the name of the first dedicated propane-powered F-150 pickup truck. With complete durable Ford truck parts and also with a variety of Ford truck accessories, Roush has an advanced liquid propane injection (LPI(TM)) system. The Roush F-150 LPI(TM) is designed and manufactured to operate solely on propane while providing the same horsepower, torque and drivability of an F-150 equipped with a gasoline-powered 5.4-liter, 3-valve Triton(TM) V-8 engine.

Roush will be available in the market immediately. The truck can be ordered, delivered or serviced through a nationwide network of selected Ford dealers. Offered as a 2007 model year vehicle, it is the only propane-powered light-duty truck available from an original equipment manufacturer this year.

The Roush F-150 is available in Regular Cab, Super Cab and Super Crew cab styles with XL or XLT trim and the full range of bed lengths. The LPI(TM) option includes dedicated propane fuel lines, fuel rail assembly and fuel tank. Additionally, another Ford truck part, the OEM computer has been re-calibrated to provide optimum performance and fuel economy.

The base LPI(TM) option is $6,500 and has a unique 20 gallon toroidal fuel tank, mounted in place of the underbody spare tire. Also available as an additional option for customers in need of increased range is a 50 gallon, in-bed fuel tank.

Ford introduced its new truck at the NPGA Southeastern Convention and International Expo in Atlanta, Georgia last April 14 to 17. It was the largest propane industry conference in the United States.

Tom Arnold, Director of Alternative Fuel Products for Roush said aside from the vehicle’s superb engineering, it is also an alternative fuel vehicle that has an established refueling infrastructure to support it. He further said this vehicle will have a positive impact on reducing emissions and the dependency on foreign oil.
Providing data to the engine’s computer that eventually allows more precise fuel control at the intake port are two billet aluminum propane injection fuel rails, an insulated cross-over, a combined pressure/temperature sensor, and a service port. Roush F-150 uses fuel injection and fuel storage systems supplied by Clean FUEL USA and ICOM, Italy. LPI(TM) is a registered trademark of Clean FUEL USA.

The standard toroidal fuel tank include a special high flow fuel pump, dual filters, and the required control valves needed to run the engine. Optional is the in-bed fuel tank. The fuel sender and electronic auto stop fill system are also found in the tank. Through the fuel filler door, the fuel is poured. An automatic stop fill device prevents the overfilling of fuel. This will allow the vehicle to be filled without using the “bleeder” system that vents propane vapors during filling. Another proof that the vehicle’s fuel tank will function well is that prior to entering the tank, the fuel is also filtered.

A “one-touch” system controls the vehicle start. The engine controls take over from the driver to provide the fastest possible start with the lowest possible emissions. The OEM engine control is used with unique calibration values to suit the changes in properties from gasoline to propane.

With no special oils or change intervals required, the maintenance schedule for the Roush F-150 LPI(TM) is similar to that of a gasoline engine schedule.

In February 2006, the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) awarded the contract to Roush. The vehicle was designed, manufactured and brought in to market in only 14 months.

The Managing Director of Engine Fuel Programs for PERC by the name of Brian Feehan said Roush has an incomparable reputation for technical expertise, quality and value. He explained that it is because of this expertise and experience that they chose Roush to develop this vehicle.

GM sells more than 2.2 million vehicles from January to April 2007

According to preliminary sales figures released earlier this week, General Motors sold a record of 2.26 million cars and trucks, along with their GM truck accessories, around the world this year from January to April. GM global first quarter sales were up 67,000 vehicles, or 3 percent, compared with sales of 2.19 million in the first quarter of 2006.

GM Vice President John Middlebrook said GM’s posted record sales in the first quarter was driven by exceptionally strong demand in emerging markets such as the global sales, service and marketing operations. He further said the company saw more than 20 percent growth in the Asia/Pacific region and had 17 percent growth in the Latin America, Africa and Middle East region. He added that the 6 percent growth in Europe where they sold more than a half-million vehicles and established a new sales record was very significant to them.

Three cars from GM are showing a global success, each showing their most marketable GM truck part: Chevrolet, HUMMER and Cadillac.

A 4 percent increase from last year was seen in the Chevrolet global sales of 1.04 million vehicles. The global increase was attributed to a 33 percent growth in Europe, 12 percent in Asia- Pacific and 19 percent in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.

GM also retains its strong luxury truck portfolio growth, due to the incomparable GM truck parts, which comprise the vehicle. Evidence is the HUMMER sales that grew 37 percent in the Latin America, Africa and the Middle East region. Around the world, HUMMER recorded 15,000 vehicle sales. With the Hummer H2 mid-cycle enhancement, addition of the V8-powered HUMMER H3 Alpha in North America and start of production of the right hand-drive HUMMER H3 in South Africa, HUMMER products are well-positioned to respond to demanding customers’ needs.

Outside North America, Cadillac had a sales increase due to the 89 percent sales growth in Europe, a 55 percent increase in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East and 47 percent growth in Asia/Pacific.

Several GM regional brands also experienced notable growth in the first quarter of 2007.

Opel and Vauxhall, for instance sold 443,000 vehicles for the months January to April this year. Vauxhall was up 6.3 percent and Opel was up about a half percent with 1,200 more vehicles sold this year compared with those sold in the first quarter of 2006. The brands achieved segment leadership with Opel Meriva and Opel Zafira — in the monocab segment — and second position with Opel Astra in the popular compact segment.

Largely based on the popularity of the new 2007 Saturn Aura, 2007 Saturn Sky, 2007 Saturn Vue, 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line Hybrid, and 2007 Saturn Outlook crossover utility vehicles, Saturn sales in the United States and Canada were up by 19 percent. Saturn anticipates stronger sales this year as it continues the launch of the Saturn Outlook crossover and welcomes Saturn Astra, the Ion small-car replacement,. Reports say Saturn is undergoing the most extensive product rebirth in its history.

Not minding South Korea’s strong market growth on the back of its Winstorm SUV and Tosca medium car, Daewoo sales of 35,000 vehicles were up 31 percent.

GM expects more increased sales these coming years as it continues to innovate what was then already way far from others.

GMC, China joint venture bring huge number of vehicles to Auto Shanghai 2007

General Motors Corp. and its China joint ventures showcased a record number of vehicles with GMC truck parts and GMC truck accessories earlier this week at Auto Shanghai 2007.

Both products of the GMC and its China joint ventures were introduced by GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner.

The 41 vehicles from GM represent an array of production, concept and clean-energy products. All six brands offered by the GM family in China are represented on their 4,500-square-meter stand at this year’s leading auto show in China.

The Buick Riviera is a ravishing coupe developed with global design input by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai and by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) automotive engineering and design joint venture in the same city. It was created to showcase Buick’s new global design direction in a stylish Eastern and Western concept vehicle. It also marks the return of a renowned Buick nameplate after an eight-year halt of production.

Appearing on the GM stand are the Chevrolet Camaro sports car, the Chevrolet WTCC race car and the Cadillac Cien sedan, and other stylish luxury vehicles.

GM and its joint ventures are also displaying an array of products that are currently or will soon be offered in China. One is the new from Buick. The brand’s top-of-the-line model, Buick Park Avenue luxury sedan is still fresh from its worldwide debut in Shanghai in April 10. The brand’s lineup also includes Shanghai GM’s best-selling model, the Excelle, as well as the ever-popular Buick GL8 executive wagon, and the hot-selling Buick LaCrosse premium sedan.

Two models courtesy of GM’s Opel import brand from Germany are being shown for the first time in Asia: The Opel Astra GTC and the Opel Astra TwinTop. The first one is offered with a panorama windshield that gives both the driver and front seat passenger an almost unlimited field of vision. Passengers experience their surroundings just like in the cockpit of an airplane because there is no crossbeam restricting the view. The second one, which was launched in Europe last May 2006, is a slim line four-seat cabrio-coupe that is one of the first cars in its class to feature an innovative three-part roof system.

Cadillac, GM’s American luxury brand, has on display all five vehicles that it currently being offered in China. Making its maiden appearance at Auto Shanghai is the Cadillac SLS luxury business sedan.

Saab, GM’s premium brand from Sweden, is showcasing four members of its 9-3 family: the Convertible, Linear sedan, Sporthatch and Vector sedan. The Saab 9-5 Aero sedan is also appearing.

The Hong Tu minivan represents the Wuling mini-vehicle brand from SAIC-GM-Wuling. It is also making its first appearance at the Shanghai auto show. Also present is the Sunshine minivan, the GM China family’s most popular model.

Chevrolet has on display a range of cars that begin with the k mini-car that is the Chevrolet Spar and go all the way up to the new Chevrolet Epica intermediate sedan, which went on sale across China beginning March. Also included are the standard and sporty versions of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback, as well as the popular Chevrolet Lova compact sedan.

GM’s latest achievement in electric and fuel cell technologies is appearing in the next version of the E-Flex electric architecture. This second variant of the E-Flex system, which is probably a GMC truck part, being shown for the first time in Shanghai uses GM’s new fifth-generation fuel cell propulsion technology and a lithium-ion battery. The system was first shown in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in the Chevrolet Volt concept vehicle. The said concept is also appearing on GM’s stand.

Auto Shanghai 2007 began last April 22 and will run until April 28 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Vehicles from GM, Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling are being displayed on the GM stand in Hall E1.

As mentioned the Avalanche has some flaws and these are as follows:

• Cadillac and some GMC trucks have six-speed boxes, which typically boost fuel economy 5 percent or more vs. four-speeds. On the other hand the Avalanche was given a four-speed automatic transmission which is not as efficient as those of the Cadillac and some other GMC trucks. “Over the next couple of years, you’ll see us switch all our four-speeds to six-speeds as we get more availability,” says Carl Hillenbrand, product manager for the Chevy Silverado pickup, formerly of Avalanche.
• The Avalanche lack rear visibility since its tailgate and cargo box block vision which makes it mandatory for would-be Avalanche owners to purchase the $250 rearview camera.
• Front seats have too much lumbar bump. It can’t be retracted fully unlike in some rival trucks.
• Fuel economy it’s disappointing. No better than any other big truck, 12 or 13 mpg around town, despite of GM’s “active fuel-management” feature. The cylinder cutoff shuts off half the cylinders when they’re not needed for smoothness or power.
• Head restraints are not provided for the middle rear rider making it a potential safety hazard. On the other hand, the safety belt for that slot is mounted to the back of the seat, positioning it low for a youngster in a booster seat.
• The back-seat room is too little, despite the generous 39 inches of legroom GM publishes.

Toyota Overthrows GM In Global Sales

The first quarter of 2007 proves to be the best quarter that the Toyota Motor Corp. has ever had. The said quarter marks the start of the automaker’s title as the world’s top automaker.

According to Satoshi Yamaguchi, Toyota sold 2.348 million vehicles around the globe in the January to March quarter thus surpassing the 2.260 million vehicles that the General Motors Corp. said it sold during the same period. The results mark the first time Toyota has beat GM in global sales on a quarterly basis, he said.

Though the figures only represent quarterly sales results, they create a tough challenge to GM, which is fighting hard to defend its throne in the auto industry. The claim is basically staked on yearly production figures.

Last year, Toyota’s global production increased ten percent to 9.018 million vehicles worldwide, while GM produced 9.180, creating a gap of about 162,000 units. In the first quarter, Toyota made 2.367 million vehicles worldwide, while GM targeted 2.335 million units.

It is not high time to do the braking, trust the efficiency of the EBC brake pads and start popping the champagne. This is because overtaking GM is not Toyota’s first priority, said Paul Nolasco who works as a spokesman for the Japanese company. “Our goal has never been to sell the most cars in the world,” Nolasco said. “We simply want to be the best in quality. After that, sales will take care of themselves.” A company spokesman added, “Our only objective is for Toyota to be No. 1 in terms of quality. We’ll let the numbers speak for themselves.”

And Toyota’s reputation for quality, technology and fuel efficiency has pushed its global sales to the top. The hot selling vehicles from the fast rising Japanese automaker include the famous Camry, Corolla and the Prius hybrid. Toyota has been gaining steadily on GM in recent years. Additionally, analysts have earlier predicted a new reign when they saw that GMs market shares are sliding in the United States.

GM, on the other hand, cut production in the previous year due to high fuel prices that drove purchasers away from trucks and SUVs. To shore up earnings, the automaker has entertained job cuts and plant closures.

In the American market, Toyota’s sales increased 12.9 percent in 2006, zooming past DaimlerChrysler AG as the top three sellers of vehicles in the U.S. market. Toyota’s share of the market rose 16 percent in March, behind GM’s 22 percent and the Ford Motor Co.’s 17 percent. GM has not released its official forecast for this year but Toyota is shooting for global target of 9.42 million vehicles and sales of 9.34 million units.
