Stress is Not Just For Adults

Stress is not just for adults. Stop everything you are doing and think upon this one fact if you read nothing else of this article.

Let me repeat it. Stress is not just for Adults! Kids are getting it too and this is really worrying if you follow this concept through to its natural conclusion. The knock on effects of this and the side effects of this could damage generations to come.

Before I start sounding as some weird harbinger of impending doom and disaster my line of thought is as follows. If the average age of those who find themselves suffering from stress becomes younger then the problem we have is that they will have insufficient natural and emotional resources to help them cope with this unnatural phenomena.

Or is it unnatural?

Many people don’t realize that stress is a very natural and important part of life.

What is Stress? OK if you remove the need to strangle the nearest Parking Warden. Only joking here, Parking Wardens are nice people, I love Parking Wardens, well not in the biblical sense as my wife might object but I digress. Stress is a feeling that’s created when we react to particular events. The problem with stress is when it becomes excessive, and when you don’t allow yourself the opportunity to recover from stressful episodes.

Stress is epidemic in the western world. Stress is your response to any physical, emotional or intellectual demands. Stress is different for each of us. Stress is a fact of life, but it need not be a way of life. Stress is any factor in a person’s life that causes change.

Stress is what you feel when you react to pressure from others or from yourself. Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Workplace stress is costing Britain billions and causing some 150,000 Britons to take at least a month off each year.

Stress is clearly a problem, and the need for remedial action is apparent. MP3 Music Best Practices

MP3 Music as we know it now has been around since since 1991. Now over 15 years later has become the want of every child, teen & adult. Even my Dad has an MP3 player and spends time every week buying MP3 Music online to add to his player. Yes, he actually pays for it and why not, with all the controversy on freeware you can end up with a virus on your computer and hey, isn’t that what we all want.

For me, it started with my son who wanted an iPod and to download iTunes music for it. Well it was expensive to say the least. So I went the route many others have gone. I purchased an MP3 player with half a gig of space for much cheaper. Excited to give this great deal to my son I decided to download music first and being of the same thinking of my father I didn’t want to chance getting a virus so I downloaded the iTunes software and purchased about twenty dollars worth of music. Now, I was getting excited, I have great MP3 Music, a cool new MP3 player and some knowledge on file transfers considering I am a webmaster by trade.

To my surprise I kept getting an error and I could not get my new music to play. What I soon discovered was that my MP3 music was mpeg4 encrypted. All my excitement went away in that very moment. What I have now is a tool to listen to music that I have to download from programs that are not safe and have such controversy that I decided to take the MP3 player back.

Here is a great question, why would manufacturers make a music player that would encourage illegal downloads of music? I couldn’t figure it out and still can’t. Really, now the only other way to get the MP3 music I wanted was to either go bite the bullet and spend the money for and iPod or go buy CD music and convert it to mp3 music. The whole idea was I can buy just the song I wanted and not the whole album.

Well lets face it Apple has this market nailed down hard. You can find players that are compatible with mpeg4 but are just as expensive and after some great research I believe the iPod is the best player around. So my next thought process was as anyone else would think “refurbished iPod”. Yes, this is a great idea and I know they are out there. Sure enough they were which made me feel a little better. Honestly, it is not worth spending all my hours trying to download music from other sources and not know what would happen and spend time converting music because I have better things to do with my time.

Air Supply Love Zone Tour ’07/’08 Continues in Springfield, Ohio 3/10/07

For the second time in my life, I was able to see Air Supply in a large, non-casino-related venue. The first time was outdoors in Arizona in 1981 when I was a young teenager and the second time was this past Saturday night at the CSCC Performing Arts Center in Springfield, Ohio.

An hour’s drive from Columbus, Springfield, at first glance, seems a quiet, sleepy town out in the middle of nowhere. But as I drove downtown to my hotel, I was pleasantly surprised to see a city center filled with buildings dedicated to the Arts and historic preservation. I couldn’t help but feel that this town was in touch with its love for community and continuing education. It should come as no surprise then that patrons of the Performing Arts Center welcomed Air Supply with open arms.

The Center was quite large, easily able to accommodate operas, plays and other musical performers. The stage was immense, and the curtains must have been at least 35 feet high. At first sight, I knew this would be an incredible venue for Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock to bring to this audience some of that 80s magic I experienced when I was 12.

Opening the show, Graham introduced himself as the “opening act” for Air Supply. He told the audience that he would be performing three songs from his upcoming CD, ‘The Future’, and hoped that we all liked the songs. Having recently had the privilege of hearing Graham perform these three songs in Las Vegas, I can tell you that he sounds better and better with each performance. Perhaps Graham is becoming more comfortable with the live performances. Who’s to know? What I can say is that each song is a testament to Graham’s genius as a songwriter and singer. The audience seemed to truly appreciate the artistry of “The Future”, “Make You Mine” and “Lace & Leather” and I cannot imagine a better venue at which to showcase Graham’s new works.

Finishing his three songs, Graham left and quickly returned to the stage; the curtains opened and Russell, Jed Moss, Jonni Lightfoot, and Mike Zerbe took their places for the new power opener, “Even The Nights Are Better”. Having spied the set list just prior to the show, I knew we were in for a full concert. It was refreshing to be at a venue where the band didn’t have to cut songs due to time constraints.

“Just As I Am”, “A Little Bit Of Everything”, and “Here I Am” were each sung beautifully, as usual. Added back into the schedule was “Chances”, and as Graham spoke to the audience just prior, he joked that they had the King and Queen of Springfield, along with the royal family, in the audience. I’ll admit that I was at first perplexed by this comment, but later realized he was speaking to the patrons in the balcony boxes watching the show below. Pretty funny!

After “Chances” came “Faith In Love”, and then “The River/Sweet Dreams”. Unfortunately, due to an audio issue, “The River/Sweet Dreams” was cut short and a 10-minute intermission was announced. The audience appreciated the break and as we milled about, I heard extremely positive reviews from the patrons with not one comment about the intermission or the song being cut short. I don’t think they even noticed.

House music has always been pushed forward by DJ’s wanting and craving new music. Music that their peer’s haven’t yet heard let alone had the ability to own. Music that is upfront and rare.

As the volume of dance labels and artists increased towards the end of the last millennium, mainly due to the ability to produce very highly polished music on a simple pc, the sales quantity of each release decreased as the market did not increase with amount of new music flooding in. Labels had previously had only one option to press a run of promotional records to send out to DJ’s. The cost of manufacture and shipping to DJ’s was huge. Overnight DJ’s could use CD’s. It’s much cheaper to manufacture and half the price to ship, an added bonus was that music could be burnt straight from a pc where the track had been written and in a DJ’s hands the following day being played to a packed club that evening. For labels and producers this was a fantastic way to promote new music and for the DJ this was bliss new music really quickly – fresh and exclusive! All went well with this new format until the mp3 came along. Suddenly promotional music was finding its way onto the file sharing sites like Limewire and Soulseek. DJ’s who had been sent music on CD or even emailed as mp3′s began sharing this music. The thought process behind people doing this went against all that had gone before as most DJ’s hide their secret weapons rather than sharing with anyone at all. This had a knock on by taking the control the labels had of who had their product when and where away. Also potential revenue began being lost and to a section of the music industry where every sale counts this was frustrating and hugely detrimental.

Dance music releases usually only have a shelf life of around 8 weeks. There are obvious exceptions to this rule but 95% of releases are played in clubs and sell for this length of time and that’s it. File sharing screwed this up by both the sales and also the structure of the chosen few influencing bigger DJ’s not having something they can fully get behind during the promotional stage of a release. Therefore less people got to hear it, less are influenced and less potentially buy it. The industry has never really recovered from file sharing but more recently the sale of mp3′s and specifically dance music mp3′s has boomed and this has helped to a certain extent slow the decline and with time the scene could once again flourish. The one problem dance music has encountered with sales of mp3′s is price but that is another story.
