The Benefits of Electric Wheelchair Lifts

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Electric wheelchair lifts help to move the wheelchair to various places at multiple levels. Electric wheelchair lifts are less expensive than hydraulic wheelchair lifts and are easy to maintain. They contain an emergency, battery-lowering device which makes them ideal for use during power outages. Electric lifts can be fitted with automatic door openers or telephone jacks as per requirements.

Electric wheelchair lifts come in many different types, including home stair lifts and automobile lifts, as well as van ramps.

Home Stair lifts can be installed anywhere inside or outside the house. They are designed to take up less space and to be quiet and comfortable. Home stair lifts can rise up to 23 feet and can lift up to 350 pounds. Some custom designed lifts can even handle more weight. The price of home lifts ranges between $2,500 and $4,000.

Automobile lifts can be fitted into automobiles to accommodate electric wheelchairs. They are very easy to operate and can be operated by one person. They can also be assembled and disassembled easily. Automotive lifts can be fitted onto most vans and cars. The price of automobile wheelchair lifts can range from $700 to $3,000.

Wheelchair van ramps help to lift the wheelchair into a van. Van ramps are much more affordable and easy to use as they are spring-loaded for easy lifting. They are also easy to maintain, as they are not mechanical. Van ramps can be folded in half and stored vertically, thus minimizing storage space. The price of wheelchair van ramps usually ranges between $500 and $1,100.

Electric wheelchair lifts are made of strong materials for durability. They are permanently lubricated and contain steel-hardened gears for resisting corrosion. Electric wheelchair lifts are available with a number of options like rocker switches in the hand-held control, manual back-up systems (in case of power failure), an emergency crank through handle, and limited wiring.

Divorce and Legal Fees

HOW MUCH WILL THE DIVORCE COST

It is difficult to determine how much a divorce will cost. However, after reviewing the likely issues, your method for resolving those issues, and hearing your philosophy of the case, a lawyer may be able to give you a range of expected expenses. Controlling the expenses in a divorce, however, is no easy task. Many of the factors contributing to legal costs are outside of your lawyer’s control. The personality and philosophy of your spouse’s attorney can affect the ultimate path that your divorce takes. Additionally, the ability of the parties to cooperate and communicate may also have a significant impact.

WRITTEN RETAINER AGREEMENTS

Your attorney is required to provide you with a written retainer agreement identifying the costs and hourly fees that will apply to your case. It is important that you read this document carefully and ask questions regarding any unclear issues. Signing a retainer agreement does not mean that you cannot fire your lawyer or that your lawyer cannot withdraw from the case. You may change lawyers at any time. The retainer agreement, however, will memorialize the terms of your billing relationship with the attorney. Once you have signed the retainer agreement, it is a legally binding and enforceable contract. Always keep a copy of your retainer agreement for later reference.

FLAT FEES

Fees charged by lawyers can vary from state to state and county to county. You may find a lawyer who charges a fixed flat fee for motions after a divorce or for uncontested proceedings where the parties have reached an agreement. In such instances, the amount of work which must be performed by the lawyer can be easily determined. This is a favorable payment method since you will know at the outset the total cost of the proceeding which will allow you to budget accordingly.

HOURLY FEES

In most contested cases, you will find that lawyers will bill out their time at an hourly rate. Although rates vary, you may expect your lawyer to bill out services at an hourly rate between $75 and $250 per hour. Reduced hourly rates may apply to services that are performed by associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks or legal assistants in your attorney’s office. Hourly rates are influenced by your attorney’s legal experience, reputation and the demand for his/her services.

MINIMUM FEES

Lawyers may also charge minimum fees for specific services that are billed out as part of the divorce proceeding. For example, drafting a Motion or a Petitioner may be billed out at a flat rate of $200. You should discuss with your lawyer any minimum fees that may be applicable to your case.

MINIMUM BILLING INCREMENTS

Your lawyer may also bill out services based on a minimum billing increment. For example, your lawyer may bill out his or her time in twelve minute increments or two tenths of an hour. That means for any service no matter how short, the lawyer’s time is rounded up to the nearest twelve minute increment.

Hodgkin’s disease

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

A cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue is Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body’s immune and blood-forming systems are contained to lymphatic tissue. The lymph nodes are small and can be found underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. They can be founded in other places in the body such as inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.

Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes that are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels. A colorless, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes is carried by lymph vessels. Into the blood vessels in the left upper chest is emptied the lymphatic fluid.

The spleen, the bone marrow and the thymus are other components of the lymphatic system. An organ in the left side of the upper abdomen that is composed primarily of mature and immature lymphocytes is the spleen which removes old cells and other debris from the blood. The spongy tissue inside the bones that creates new red and white blood cells including lymphocytes is the bone marrow. A small organ in the chest that is important in developing a special lymphocyte called a T cell is the thymus.

Hodgkin’s disease can start almost anywhere because lymphatic tissue is present in many parts of the body but often starts in lymph nodes in the upper part of the body like chest, neck, or under the arms. A pressure on important structures can be caused by Hodgkin’s disease that enlarges the lymphatic tissue. It can spread through the lymphatic vessels to other lymph nodes. Hodgkin’s disease spreads to nearby lymph node sites in the body. Rarely it gets into the blood vessels and can spread to almost any other site in the body, including the liver and lungs.

Many reasons may cause enlargement of lymph nodes. Enlarged lymph nodes are more commonly a result of the body fighting an infection.

A malignant lymphoma (cancer of lymphatic tissue) is Hodgkin’s disease. There are two kinds of lymphomas: Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. The cancer cells in Hodgkin’s disease are called Reed-Sternberg cells. These cells look different from cells of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas and other cancers. It is believed that Reed-Sternberg cells are a type of malignant B lymphocyte. The cells that make antibodies that help fight infections is normal B lymphocytes.

The two main types are classical Hodgkin’s disease (which has several subtypes) and nodular predominant Hodgkin’s disease. The subtypes of classical Hodgkin’s disease are: lymphocyte predominance, nodular sclerosis, mixed cellularity, lymphocyte depletion. In the case of nodular predominant Hodgkin’s disease lymphocyte are predominant.

Because they grow, they may compress, invade, destroy normal tissue and spread to other tissues these types are malignant. Unfortunately a benign (non cancerous) form is not present in Hodgkin’s disease.

Periodontal Disease and Heart Attacks

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

“Brush your teeth or you’ll have a heart attack!”

This is not an admonishment that I either heard as a child or ever made to my own children or patients. However it is becoming increasingly evident that maintaining good dental hygiene and treating periodontal disease is one of the easiest and most important things that we can do to prevent heart disease, stroke and several other illnesses.

Periodontitis is defined as inflammation of the supporting tissues of the tooth. These tissues include bone, the periodontal membrane and the gums. Gingivitis (infection of the gums) is a common cause of periodontitis as is the dental plaque that forms on the other periodontal tissues. Periodontitis has been known for centuries to be responsible for a large proportion of dental problems but recent research has shown that its deleterious effects extend far beyond the mouth.

In a recent article I wrote about a condition called chronic systemic inflammation which is a low grade, pervasive form of inflammation that damages the endothelial linings of arteries and has also been implicated in causing harm to a variety of other tissues and organs.

Periodontitis is a very important cause of this sinister inflammatory process and is associated with infection and inflammation of the periodontal tissues and the release of bacteria, toxins, protein acids, pro-inflammatory chemical messengers and other harmful compounds into the mouth and blood stream. Once in the blood stream these agents stimulate a systemic inflammatory response that in turn causes problems a long way from the mouth. Some of the most important targets of periodontitis-induced systemic inflammation are the blood vessels – especially the endothelial linings of the arteries.

These inflammatory agents cause narrowing and rigidity of the arteries that results in reduced blood supply to the heart, brain, kidneys and other organs. In addition, systemic inflammation is thought to contribute to an inflammatory process in the arterial endothelium itself. Inflammation in this important part of the blood vessel aggravates the formation of cholesterol plaques in the arteries and ultimately causes the rupture of these plaques – events that result in heart attack or stroke.

The theory of the effects of periodontitis on heart disease and other illnesses is backed up by several very recent clinical trials.

One study found that those who had recently suffered a heart attack had far higher levels of pathogenic bacteria in their mouths than those in a non-heart attack control group. In another study arterial blood flow was measured in those with periodontal disease before and after intensive treatment for their periodontal disease. Interestingly, the arterial blood flow in these patients diminished slightly over the first few days following the treatment but a few weeks later it increased substantially and was significantly better than that of the untreated control group.

Ulcer treatment

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Treating an ulcer is usually made combining two different methods. One is a change in the lifestyle of the person suffering from ulcer. The other one is with the help of medication that can fight against ulcer.

The most common medicine for treating gastric ulcer or duodenal ulcer are proton pumps, mucosal protective agents and drugs that block H2. If you also have an H pylori inffection, which is very common in ulcer, doctors will also use antibiotics together with those medications. There are cases when medication do not work for an ulcer. Surgery is the alternative.

The medications that are used in treating ulcer are H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors and agents that protect the mucus. The first medication in treating an ulcer reduces the amount of your stomach acid. If you take a dose of this medicine before you go to sleep, the gastric ulcer can be cured in about two months and the duodenal ulcer faster, in almost one month. The second drug used to treat an ulcer has the role to stop the production of acid. It is more powerful than H2 blockers. It can cure a duodenal ulcer in almost two weeks. This medicine is also an alternative to ulcer patients whose H2 treatment does not work. The last medicine used to treat ulcer is the for protecting the mucous coat of the stomach from acid. Antibiotics are also used as an ulcer treatment, but only if you have a bacteria infection. The percent of recurrence of an ulcer is very big if antibacterial treatment is not used.

Nowadays, there are two types of therapy against an ulcer: the triple and dual therapy. The first ulcer therapy includes: metronidazole, four times every day, tetracycline, also four time each day and pepto-bysmol. This ulcer treatment lasts for two weeks. It has a rate of almost 90 percent effectiveness in destroying the bacteria that caused the ulcer. This ulcer therapy is also very effective because it reduce the risk of ulcer reoccurrence. The second ulcer therapy means that only two medicines are taken: amoxcillin and prolosec. This ulcer therapy also lasts for two weeks, but it has only an 80 percent effectiveness.

If any of the ulcer treatments do not give good results, doctors can use surgery. For an ulcer, the most common of the surgeries are vagotomy, pyloroplasty and antrectomy. The last two of the ulcer surgeries may be performed together.

Goals…Why are they SO important?

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Goal setting should really be defined as a person creating the future in advance by writing these goals on a paper and doing what ever it takes to make it happen.

Ok, what is the first step? You need to define a goal. You need to know exactly what you want, when you want it, and why you want it. That is your goal. If you don’t know exactly what your goal is, you will not commit to it.

So you need to know what you want to achieve and WRITE it down on a piece of paper. Having your short term goal or long term goal in your head only may not help that much. Every book says that.

When you do write your goals down, you need to ask yourself one important question. Is this goal realistic? Can you really make it work and come true? Do you really believe that you can reach it? Faith is also an important ingredient that can make or break your goal. If you don’t think or believe that you can make your goal a reality, then you probably won’t.

You need to have faith in yourself. You need to have faith in your goals. You need to have faith that you can reach any goal that you set.

You then need to determine what price, what’s the worthiness of that goal. What level of importance are you going to put on it? Is it a want? Is it a need? Is it, “It would be nice to have it”?

You need to make that goal a burning desire. You need to make it a must. It is a “Have to have it no matter what” goal. If you do that then you’re your subconscious mind will look for ways to make that goal a reality. It will give you ideas on how you should go about to achieve it.

Now, short-term goals are usually simpler and easier than long-term goals. Why? Well, writing them can help you have more frequent victories, and building momentum with each one you complete. If you do that, you can have more excitement and more motivation as you reach those goals on time.

When you do reach your short-term goals, don’t forget to reward yourself. This will show you that you can achieve any goal.

A word of warning for the long-term goals that you make. It will be harder to achieve it because as the time goes by, you can get discouraged and lose your interest. Try to set short-term goals. It will keep you more focused and motivated.

If you haven’t achieved your short-term or long-term goal, you will need to look at your goal and change the date, and the action that you have taken when you didn’t reach that goal. Remember, if you take the SAME action that led you to failure then you will probably get the SAME results. You need to take a look from all angles to see what you did and what you can change.

How to evaluate your state of health if multiple sclerosis is suspected?

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Certain things may make a person ask her self if she is starting to suffer from multiple sclerosis. If a person has a blurry vision or has maybe trouble concentrating that doesn’t necessarily mean that she or he are suffering from this terrible disorder. Something else may to blame for a whole other reason. It’s a well known fact that multiple sclerosis has a lot of symptoms similar to a lot of other disorders of the central nervous system. Still, as said earlier, if any signs of the disease appear in any person, checking with the doctor should be the next thing to do. Early diagnosing of the disorder and early treatment has shown to greatly improve the slowing of the rate of witch the disease progresses.

A special diagnosing from your doctor may also be a bit tricky considering the fact that there isn’t a specific set of rules to follow in order to correctly see if that specific person suffers from the disorder. The best thing to do is to let the doctor asses the symptoms that the patient has said he is suffering from. The next thing to do is let the doctor give you a compleat physical check in order to see if other more subtle symptoms are also present. These symptoms may be either changes in eye movement or very minute changes in speech patterns. If still a proper diagnosis can’t be made further tests may include a RMI scan or a spinal tap. Treatments have shown that they are able to improve the state of the patient, and the fact is the earlier the treatment begins the better the chance is that the effect will be stronger in the patient.

People are different one from another. Thinking of this we realize that it is the same thing about how the disease affects the patient. Some people may this way experience very diverse symptoms while others just a few. Even if the symptoms are not showing damage is being done to the central nervous system, damage that gets worse and with the passing of time. Treatments are available now in many forms but it is important that the patient stays in therapy if the chance to slow the action of the disorder is ever to exist.

The way that the disease actually works is that because the nervous cell loses its myelin it’s more predisposed to get damaged. The optic nerve suffers some serious damage because of this: it gets swollen causing blurry vision in a matter of days after it has started. Pain may also be felt especially when moving the eye.

Chicken pox treatment

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

There are many thing to deal with when suffering from chicken pox, but the most important and hard is the itching.

Chicken pox, also known as in medical terms, varicella consists of a rash all over your body. This rash then soon turns into blisters and then scabs. These blisters are very itchy, but they must not be scratched under any circumstance, because it may lead to infection. Another chicken pox symptom that must be controlled is the fever. Although, a chicken pox patient will not suffer from a very high fever, nonetheless it must be reduced. For the itching sensation that chicken pox gives you, warm baths using baking soda are recommended. You may also use green peas or even honey, to relieve your child of that terrible itching sensation that chicken pox gives. Cool compresses or even cool baths will actually do you a world of good when suffering from chicken pox.

As many of you know, chicken pox is a children’ s disease, that only affects a small number of adults. So, because it affects children, aspirin should under no circumstances, be used in children that suffer from chicken pox. The reason is very simple, aspirin increase the risk of developing Reye’ s symdrom, which is life- threatening. So, for the fever that is caused by chicken pox or any other conditions that affect children, use ipubrofen instead. Also make sure that you cut your child’ s fingernails very short, or better yet use some gloves, because he/ she may damage the skin from scratching. If the chicken pox rash affects your child’ s mouth and somehow lesions happen, you might want to use some salt water, for your child’ s comfort. Furthermore, try to give your child as many cold fluids as you can and also keep him/ her away from any spicy food. This will prevent any further damage of the mouth because of the chicken pox rash.

Because the blisters that are cause by chicken pox are filled with fluid, the risk of developing an infection is very great. So make sure that your child washes his/ her hands at least three times every day. Also try to keep the skin affected by chicken pox as clean as possible. Infections in children suffering from chicken pox are not very sever, but there is always the risk of a big infection.

To prevent chicken pox, you can have your child vaccinated. Actually, nowadays doctors encourage vaccination against chicken pox.

Mental Math Methods from Asia

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

First of all, let us figure out what exactly is mental math. Today if you search the phrase “mental math” you will probably end up with millions of options. Not exactly that makes your life easy; instead it builds up and strengthens your curiosity. Put in simplest terms, mental math can be defined as calculations performed in your head – mentally – without help of any external device be it as simple as pen and paper or any modern day device such as calculator, computer or any other electronic gadget.

We humans perform mental mathematical calculations everyday, consciously and unconsciously. When you are driving you figure out when to apply brakes to bring the vehicle to stop before hitting something. You figure out time difference between east coast and west coast. But where we falter is at the simplest and most mundane of calculations. Go to a restaurant and figure out 18% gratuity.

Abacus Mental Mathematics

What is abacus mental mathematics? Origin of Abacus is highly disputed today, some say it originated in Mesopotamia and some claim to be in China. Over centuries, abacus has evolved in to various different forms and sizes. The most commonly used is the Japanese Soroban Abacus.

The Soroban Abacus consists of one upper row and four lower rows and columns vary from thirteen, fifteen, seventeen or twenty one. It is claimed and proven by many researchers in Asia that Abacus stimulates whole brain development. When children use both hands to move the abacus beads to perform arithmetic calculations, there is quick communication between the hands and the brain that stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This promotes rapid, balanced whole brain development.

If a child starts learning the abacus before being taught traditional arithmetic, there is minimal conflict and the child will easily work within both systems. If a child starts the program later, having already received traditional foundations, there may be a slightly extended learning period for the child to accept and integrate the abacus method.

Vedic Mental Mathematics

What is Vedic mental mathematics? Origin of Vedic Mathematics is in Atharva Veda (Holy Scripture from Hinduism). Vedic mathematics is a system based on sixteen sutras (aphorisms) which are actually word-formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of mathematical problems. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution.

It is claimed and proven by many researchers in Asia that practice and use of Vedic mathematics helps the person in many different aspects of decision making. From intelligent guessing to thinking outside the box ability. Vedic mathematics has its applications to much advanced mathematics, such as calculus and linear algebra. The sixteen sutras are: By one more than the one before, All from 9 and the last from 10, Vertically and crosswise, Transpose and apply, If the Samuccaya is the same it is zero, If one is in ratio the other is zero, By addition and by subtraction, By the completion or non-completion, Differential calculus, By the deficiency, Specific and general, The remainders by the last digit, The ultimate and twice the penultimate, By one less than the one before, The product of the sum, and All the multipliers

Today, both these methods have made a come back in Asia. Abacus Mental Math method is extremely popular in nations of China, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Korea and India whereas Vedic Mental Math method is extremely popular only in India.

Learn How To Combat Acid Reflux Disease

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

You have acid reflux and it is not fun. Trust me, I know exactly how uncomfortable acid reflux disease can be and how it can slow you down. It is much more than simple heartburn which we all experience from time to time. Acid reflux occurs when the formation of gas and acidic things in the stomach causes severe pain or a burning sensation in the stomach and chest. This is known as Acid Reflux Disease, also known as Gastroespohaheal Reflux Disease.

What happens is that you have eaten something you should not have. It does not need to be something you KNOW you should not eat, because acid reflux affects each of us differently. Unfortunately, it is only from experience that we learn what we can eat and what causes acid reflux to flare up. And things change over time, so every now and then we may want to try different things out, because we get older, our tolerances for certain foods may either increase or decrease.

From a medical standpoint, acid reflex is a physiological condition that typically occurs when there is inappropriate activity in the lower esophageal sphincter, or in other words, the muscular valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach. This activity allows the contents of the stomach to empty into, or REFLUX, into the esophagus and throat. This happens when this valve does not close properly or when this muscle relaxes, thereby allowing the contents of the stomach to back up.

But you don’t care what happens physiologically. All you know is that it happens and you need to know what to do about it. If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, you need to see your doctor on a regular basis to make sure that it is kept under control. The biggest thing you can do to avoid acid reflux is to avoid foods that are known to increase the level of stomach acid.

What if you already are having episodes of acid reflux and want to control them? You may wish to consider a natural cure. There are many natural cures and natural health remedies that are readily available on the market today that will help control the effects of acid reflux.

You need to make sure that what you are experiencing is really acid reflux and not a sign of something more serious like heart disease. But once that determination is made, one popular way to combat is to use to antacids. Depending on the severity of the affliction, this can be as simple as Rolaids or Tums, or maybe requiring a bit more strength such as Pepto-Bismol or Mylanta. You should be keeping a close eye on exactly what kinds of treatments seem to work best for you, since we are all different, and different remedies will have varying results. The remedy that works for you may not work nearly as well for the guy next door.

Do not allow acid reflux to ruin your day or your night out. You can control acid reflux by exercising a bit of good judgment. Instead of ordering your seafood blackened, order it grilled. Instead of french fries, get a baked potato instead. Your choice of foods is going to play your greatest role in avoiding more acid reflux.

Typical theories regarding developing prostate cancer

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

Prostate cancer can strike men at any age, primarily though, the majority of men tend to be over 65 years old. There are many given theories as to why men get this cancer and theories supporting claims.

In addition, typical theories include the usual, diet, exercise, ethnic originality and genetics. Diet is an important factor, a high-fat diet increases the chances of getting prostate cancer, particularly animal fats. However, case studies have shown that other various fats found in our everyday food can be linked to prostate cancer, including that of vegetable fats. On the upside however, there are foods that we can introduce mor strongly into our daily diet to decrease our risks. Omega-3 acids, which are found in oily fish contain minerals that studies have shown to decrease the risk. A higher intake of tomatoes for example has also been shown to have positive results, Vitamin D and soy intake has also been linked to claims of decreasing your risk. But, as with any claim, they are currently being investigated and many trials and experiments will be required before any solid cases and treatments can be derived from these.

Furthermore, another typical theory that has cropped up has been the nature of your ethnic background; typically african-american and latino men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than of Caucasian men. As with, Asian and Native americans, being the least likely to develop prostate cancer. Such theories have been linked directly to the diets of those ethnic backgrounds, the further west you come in the world, the higher the risk of developing this cancer seems to become, as opposed to men who are from the Africas and Asias.

Another third, and final theory, stems from a family history of prostate cancer. Studies have shown that people with direct relatives in the family that have developed cancer are at a higher risk of developing it themselves, particulary fathers or brothers. However, numerous factors can cause such developments, such as mutations in genes are known to initiate growths. Men who carry the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 may have doubled their risk of developing prostate cancer. Men with high levels or testosterone are also likely targets of this cancer, so, it’s always advisable to get checked up.

What for is cancer staging useful?

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

Staging is used by the doctors to evaluate how much the cancer has invaded the organism and to decide further what methods of therapy to apply.

The colon cancer staging began with the Duke’s classification system which contained three stages: A, B, and C. After a while Astler-Coller brought modifications to this classification, adding one more stage: the D stage. In 1978 Gunderson & Sosin brought other modifications to the classification and a few years ago, the American Joint Committee on Cancer has come with a new classification called TNM containing four stages.

Nowadays the doctors use more often the TNM classification and the Duke’s classification in staging the colon cancer.

Duke stage A refers to the fact that the cancer affects only the mucosa of the bowel and does not get further to other structures of the colon. Duke stage B1 shows that the cancer has reached the muscularis propria of the colon but did not get through it. In Duke stage B2 the tumor has got through the muscularis propria of the colon. In Duke stage C1 the cancer has reached the muscularis propria and has also affected the local lymph nodes. In Duke stage C2 the tumor has got through the muscularis propria of the colon and has also reached the local lymph nodes. Duke stage D shows that the cancer has spread towards other tissues and organs.

The TNM staging refers to tumor, nodes and metastasis.

T1: the cancer has affected the mucosa and the submucosa too. T2: the cancer has extended to the muscularis propria. T3: the cancer has passed through the muscularis propria and has reached the subserosa. T4: the cancer has affected all the colon’s layers and it is spreading o the nearby organs.

N0: it means that no lymph nodes are affected yet. N1: the cancer has affected 1 to 3 local lymph nodes. N2: the cancer is found in more than 4 local lymph nodes.

M0: it means that no metastases are present. M1: it means that distant metastasis can be seen.

Another classification which is more accurate contains both the Duke’s and the TNM classification.

Stage I: T1 N0 M0; T2 N0 M0 means that the disease has extended in the inner layers of the colon but it has not spread to other structures yet. Stage II: T3 N0 M0; T4 N0 M0 means that the nearby structures of the colon and rectum have been invaded but the lymph nodes are clear. Stage III: any T, N1-2, M0 refers to the fact that the lymph nodes are affected by the disease but the distant organs are still safe. Stage IV: any T, any N, and M1 means that metastases have appeared, and so the cancer has spread to distant organs like lungs and liver.

A short classification of leukemia cells

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

In the bone marrow are produced the leukemia cells which are abnormal and immature. These cells are clasiffied in two types:lymphoid leukemia cells and myeloid leukemia cells. The abnormal, immature cells called leukemia cells are produced by blood-forming tissue and these are named after the lymphoid or myeloid cells.

It is better to know about the normal blood cells and about the form of these. So,in the bone marrow, which is the soft material in the center of most bones, are formed the blood cells. The immature blood cells called stem cells and blasts are produced by the marrow.

These blood cells become mature, they can be formed into one of three types of mature blood cells like:red blood that carry oxygen and other materials to all tissues of the body, white blood cells that fight infection and disease, platelets that help prevent bleeding by causing blood clots to form.

One of two types of stem cells are created by mature blood cells like lymphoid stem cells or myeloid stem cells. As they grow they become lymphoid blasts, they transform in lymphocytes and then passes into white blood cells. In the same way myeloid cells grow, passes into myeloid blasts, then myelocytes and finally they become either white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets.

Abnormal cells are produced in the bone marrow and they can be either abnormal lymphoid cells or myeloid cells;appears only at people with leukemia.Lymphocytic leukemia is formed by the abnormal lymphoid cells and the myeloid leukemia is created by the abnormal myeloid cells. The types of leukemia based on the leukemia cells are four and they are the following:chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL),chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML),acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Too many stem cells develops into either abnormal lymphoblasts or lynphocytes conduct to the appearence of lymphoid leukemia cells.Unfortunatelly lymphoblastic and lymphocytic are not abble to fight infection because of the number of lymphocytes arrises in the blood and bone marrow, there is less space for healty white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, which can cause infection anemia and easy bleeding.

At people with leukemia there are three types of lymphocytes they became abnormal:B lymphocytes that make antibodies to help fight infection,T lymphocytes that help B lymphocytes make the antibodies that help fight infection and natural killer cells that attack cancer cells and viruses. It is important for as to know the classification of these cells and their role.

Cancer Research UK

Last Updated: 2011/10/01

More and more people are surviving cancer than ever before. cancer is no longer the death sentence it once was. Cancer treatments in the past were sometimes drastic and devastating. Surgery that used to involve a large incision can now be accomplished through a small incision using a surgical probe that allows surgeons to see and remove cancerous tissue without the trauma of major surgery.

Radiation therapy has advanced as well. More sophisticated equipment and technology does less damage to the surrounding tissues. New discoveries and developments have brought about new and more effective medicines with less side effects. This and other advancements have been brought about by ongoing cancer research.

Cancer Research UK is one research organization based in the United Kingdom. It is one of the few independent organizations devoted to cancer research in the world. One of the goals of this organization and others like it is to gain a better understanding of the various types of cancer. By doing so they can then develop better medicines and treatments to fight cancer.

Only through a better understanding of cancer can advancements in these areas be made.Research is the step by step process that is done by collecting and examining data on cancer. It almost always involves a quest for new information that can help to develop a new drug or treatment or hopefully some day an actual cure for cancer.

Research can involve the study of its basic biology to the effects of treatments. Another area of research involves the testing of drugs that have already been developed. Before a drug is made available to the public it must undergo years of testing to make sure it is safe and effective. Right now there are drugs undergoing testing that in years to come will be available for use but researchers must first determine their overall effect on the cancer patients who use them.

Most people don’t realize just how many different types of cancer there are, each with its different problems in treating it. So there has to be many different areas of research to develop treatments for them. Cancer Research UK supports over three-thousand researchers and the work they are doing.

The one true key to successful cancer research is money. One ongoing job for nonprofit cancer research organizations is raising the funds to support the work they are doing. Anyone can help cancer research by making a donation to any of the nonprofit cancer research centers. In this way you can do your part to help find better treatments and hopefully some day a cure for the disease.Another way to help is to take part in a clinical trial of a new drug or treatment.

Another area of cancer research is focused on the relieving of the symptoms of the cancer. Until a cure is found people with cancer have to endure the symptoms of the disease. The first one that come so mind is pain but there are many others such as dietary and nutritional special problems cancer patients face.

Learning how to better keep cancer patients pain free, happy and healthy is another area of ongoing cancer research. There too many areas of cancer research to cover here but we have covered a few. Only through cancer research can progress be made in understanding its causes, how to prevent it and eventually a cure.
