Job Requirements

The Dereckman’s main duty is the maintenance of the machinery in the mud pump room. Drillers occupy one of the most important positions on the rig. He is responsible for the drilling in the seabed.

Tool pushers and offshore installation manager make up the rig management.

Tool pushers work in the rig offices and rig floors. Offshore installation managers are responsible for the entire rig.

Mechanical department hires motorman, mechanics and maintenance supervisors who are responsible for all mechanical operations.

Electrical department includes positions like electrician, electronic technician and maintenance supervisors who look after the repair of all electrical equipment.

Catering team is made up of the stewardess, cook and the camp boss who are in charge of the catering, laundry and cleaning.

Before you decide to start a career in this industry, one needs to keep in mind certain criteria like health, age, experience, education and interests. The job requires you to be in good physical condition, and you need to pass certain medical examinations. Although the average age is 27 for offshore jobs, you can apply for coast guard or drilling contractor positions if you are less than 18. Becoming An Aerial Gunner, Navigator, Or Crew Chief For The Air Force

I have interviewed an Air Force Crew Chief: “What are the criteria for becoming a aerial gunner/navigator? Is it better than being a crew chief? First, you need to join a unit that flies helos if you want to be a gunner (aka Aerial observer A/O). You can’t be a Crew chief unless you lat move and go to the schoolhouse for the MOS – there is an exception to that in the case of ‘homegrown’, but that’s not in your cards unless you’ve been flying as an A/O previously.”

“Second – there has to be a need to have you as an AO – squadrons only have so many people they can have on flight orders at one time (it’s all about the money) and number of aircraft vs. T/O – it’s all spelled out in the Training and Readiness (T&R) manuals. Third – you need to be recommended by the squadron in the form of a Standardization Board (Stan Board) – which consists of the XO, Ops O, Natops O – and a few of the more senior SNCOs who have been flying for a long time).”

“Fourth – you need to be fit for the duty – swim quall, physiology and a flight physical. Fifth – If you make it this far – you should be able to start flying an initial A/O flight syllabus which includes different types of flight regimes.”

“It depends on aircraft maintenance, aircraft availability and scheduling – and if you don’t show your mentors, the’gods’, the crew chiefs, a desire to learn or willingness to help out with maintenance effort – you will gain no credibility or respect and your aspiring dreams to be a fly-boy will be squashed to the amount of a mis-formed cat turn that missed the litter box.”

“There is a gunner/observer that is part (part time that is) of a helo crew. No it is not better than being a Crew Chief. Although if you are in another shop and not a Crew Chief, then yes, it is a cool extra gig to do.”

“Delta probably included the most info. First you need to be in a squadron that ‘need’ aircrew. You can imagine, like working at a tanning booth rubbing massage oil on hot ladies, Flying jobs are easy to fill. ‘Make yourself marketable’! You have to be able to swim and you WILL need to be a Plane Captain. If you don’t know what a Plane Captain is then you should probably give up now.”

“It depends on the squadron. I was a Huey Crew Chief. We had the following chain of Learning. Get on Flight Orders. Observer (Go to NVG Classes) Responsible to keep your side of the aircraft from hitting stuff at night. You really got to fly at night unless needed for another mission. Gunners (Take the Gun Syllabus) are responsible for shooting all targets on your side. ‘Also’, responsible to ‘not’ shoot remember , you get whatever gun the Crew Chief does ‘not’ want to shoot that day.”

“We had 3 gun quails M60, .50 cal, and Mini Gun. Crew Chief are responsible for ‘every’ thing. You are the senior guy in the back and make ‘all’ decisions from the back of the pilots head to the rear of the bird. You are the go to guy for the pilots for mechanical issues and make sure nothing falls out. ”

“You are equally responsible to keep the plane in the air as the pilot”. Each mission is different. As a Crew Chief you can fly as an observer — but, as an observer you ‘cannot’ fly as a Crew Chief. My squadron did not wing you until you finished the Crew Chief syllabus. We had guys in fight suits with EGA’s instead of wings because they were gunners ‘not’ Crew Chiefs. I ‘think’ the C-130 may use an enlisted navigator.”

Getting In The Navy With Only Your GED

Here is a third party opinion about getting into the navy: “I don’t have a high school diploma unfortunately, only a GED. I’ve attended college a year as well; I really want to join the Navy because I think it’ll help me become a better person in some ways. I’d like to signup and join ASAP. I’m also a thin guy, I haven’t really worked out in a while but I know I can do at least 30 proper pushups and am real flexible when it comes to the sit and reach, running maybe a problem though. Getting in with only a GED opens and closes sometimes. You would need 15 college credits to be able to join because of your GED. Sometimes you can get in with a GED if you score a 50 on the ASVAB. It depends on where the window is.”

“As long as that year worth of college consists of 100 levels or higher courses (and you passed them). That elevates your GED to the same level as a HS diploma. But you still have to meet all the other requirements. Have you taken the ASVAB yet? If you hadn’t tried to continue your education the Navy wouldn’t even look at you. With those college credits it shows people you realized you needed to do more and did it. They work for you, not label you in a negative way. The only one who could do that is you.”

“How do I know? I went in with no high school diploma and got my GED and went on to college. The Navy helped me grow up. Now its your turn to grow a bit so do it. In my experience it wasn’t that bad, and I didn’t even have a GED. It just meant a few more hand written statements, and a few extra phone calls while at the MEPS. Guys they doing things different know. I had no college, no HS diploma, and no GED. They still let me in. I told them I could turn a wrench. Only stipulation was to get a 50 or higher on the ASVAB.”

“I don’t know how many credits I have I had to take a break from school to work and been gone a month or so. I just don’t want that to be my only ticket in because I maybe short credits and if that’s the case I don’t know when I’ll be able to go back to school. I know I need to grownup and I’m sure the Navy will help with that, that’s partly why I want to join. Hopefully I’ll get a hold of the local recruiter soon, but from your experience how fast can someone get in and to boot camp?”

“Without a high School diploma things are not good, but not altogether terrible either. Much depends on, first the branch of military and how bad they need live bodies. The Chair Force is probably not an option since they are so clean and shiny that Mother Cabrini would have a hard time proving herself worthy.”

“The Navy Recruiter told me before Christmas that it was possible, at that point, now I am not sure. The Army seems likely to accept GED’s much more often. The Marines as of last week in “my area” Oklahoma City were not, of course that could change. In a short time the services might be begging people to join, one never knows. When I went in as long as you were walking upright and not too stoned or drunk they sent you to boot camp, with little or no information and no guidance or plan.”

“Go talk to the office and explain yourself and your situation, prove that you are capable of walking upright and mean business. After all, he does not know who you are without seeing you in person. Don’t take offense at this, but when you go to the office, dress as if you are applying for the first REAL job you have ever had, be professional.”

A New Warfare Designation: ‘Explosive Ordinance Disposal Warfare Specialist’

Now approved is a new warfare designation called “Explosive Ordinance Disposal Warfare Specialist”, or EWS. That designation will replace the current EOD designation that appears after a sailor’s name. “We are trying to build a community here,” said CNO-designated Command Master Chief (EWS/SW) Anthony Santino, the top enlisted sailor in Naval Expeditionary Combat Command. The new EWS designator formalizes the EOD warfare qualification program that has been in place since 1995 but until now had not been codified in an official CNO-approved instruction.

“Since our rating is now EOD, it seemed a bit redundant to also have it after our names, too,” Santino said. No additional pin is forthcoming, however. The existing EOD “crab” pin will continue to be used. The EOD Basic Badge is now a qualification/Specialty badge. They do not earn a warfare specialty until Senior Tech. So Seaman Joe would come out of the pipeline as Seaman Joe (DV, PJ), and in a few years would be Petty Officer Joe (EWS).

I understand that it denotes completing your warfare pipeline, but if you don’t complete it are you going to stay EOD anyway? Is it just me, or did everything seem to become a warfare qual recently. You only used to see SS, SW, AW, SEAL or EOD until recently and hardly anybody had more than two. Now some guys have like six things after their name. I agree with listing warfare quails, but why the entire resume?

What you qualify for is not always the same as what you can wear. It depends on how they group the qualifications and how many you have. You can wear a max of two, but they must be from different warfare areas. If they group the Expeditionary Warfare Device and EWS together, than you could only wear one.

Example: A Naval Flight Officer changes designators and qualifies as a Naval Aviator. He or she is qualified for both, but can only wear one since they are from the same warfare area. Example: A Surface Warfare Officer changes designators and qualifies as a Naval Aviator. He or She can wear both because they are different warfare areas. The list of groupings can be found in the Uniform Regulations.

What about someone assigned to EOD Support Side? Obviously (EWS) is not an option, but I would think with EOD now falling under NECC that (EXW) would be an option for someone filling those type billets. At least, I hope it will be an option for me. Here’s what’s on the net.

The Expeditionary Warfare device requires, “Completion of general expeditionary and unit-specific Personnel Qualification Standard (PQS), the general PQS to include weapon qualifications and maintenance, marksmanship, land navigation, field communications and expertise in setting up expeditionary camps.” Most of that looks like it comes from TEU in the EOD community.

So, some good people to ask would be those at TEU. I know that each one of those requirements was a week long class, or longer. Rifle and pistol was split up over a few weeks. But the requirement also says, “Sailors assigned to expeditionary units will have one year to complete the Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare qualification, and it will be mandatory for Sailors E-5 and above.”

It will probably take a while to shake out all the kinks in the new NECC. If you’ve already reported aboard, run up the ladder and ask. I am told that some support people will deploy with DETs and some will not. That might be a determination.

Steps To Take The Coast Guard Aviation Program

The following are opinions from soldiers regarding the Coast Guard Aviation program: “My questions are kind of difficult. I’ve talked to many different recruiters, and retirees. My goal is to fly in the coast guard, I want to fly Jayhawks or dolphins prefibly, but I will really fly anything and work my way there. I am very interested in joining CSPI, but I am not sure if my school qualifies. I think the minority rate is close, and I hope it does.”

“I planned on CSPI, OCS, and then blue 21 if I can. I also wanted to know the chances of becoming a pilot are, and what path there is the most efficient. Also, would joining another branch of the military, and then going direct commission into flight be easier. And if so what branch would be the best.”

“Take your education more seriously than you take your grammar and you may go somewhere. Flying is serious business, steps cannot be overlooked, (like the absence of caps and punctuation)… many people read these interviews, keep it squared away. You have to get selected to two programs if you go through another branch first (the first service then the second). Plus flying in the other services isn’t exactly a cake walk. Additionally, you may get stuck in a stop loss and not be allowed to leave the other service. So easy is not a word I would use.”

“Don’t you all think that it would be easier given our young lads experience, to get into say, Army aviation as a warrant than the CG aviator program? When I was in, if you were a pilot in another branch of service, it was a lot easier to get into CG Aviation. Course things change. Look at the information on CSPI. To find out if your school qualifies for CSPI. When you follow the link you will find out Embry Riddle does not meet the minimum 25% minority requirement. I don’t remember CSPI having a minority minimum for the program. I would double check on that, the website might be wrong.”

“When I was attending Riddle (99-03) I was in the CG reserves and I personally know two people that where accepted into the CSPI program. Well, only about 40% of CG aviators are prior aviators so 60% are home grown CG. So by numbers alone, you have a better shot going the CG route. Additionally, the DCAs are competing against other pilots and there are very few boards a year. One or two only so again, define easy. Any way you go it is difficult, just a different barrier to face.”

“CSPI does not guarantee Flight School. Only Blue 21 and Avcad (for Active Duty Members) do. Blue 21 is a different route to get accepted to OCS and guaranteed Aviation. You cannot go from CSPI to OCS and then Blue 21. You would have to apply for CSPI, attend OCS, and then submit a request to Flight School. Or you could just apply to Blue 21, but you would have to change to a school with a 25% minority population. There is also AVCAD for Active Duty Members. I am not quite sure how it works, but if you Google “Coast Guard OCS Portal” there is information on that message board about AVCAD.”

“You should look into the Army Warrant Officer Program. They have a 6 year commitment after Flight School, and you may be able to lateral over to the Coast Guard after you complete your six year commitment and until you are age 34. I believe the Navy may also have a Warrant Officer Program, but it might be for Active Duty members only. You can learn a lot more by looking around military.com, the OCS Portal, and even the USCG website.”
