Advantages of a Hybrid Car

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

With a proper introduction to the operation of a hybrid car automobile and an explanation of the energy saving benefits that can be enjoyed through car ownership, the advantages of hybrid car operations will be realized and ultimately understood. Thus, before buying a car, a hybrid car especially, it is import ant to discuss and find out more about the many nice advantages of Hybrid car performancewith friends and family.

The hybrid version of automobiles offers the customer an interesting assortment of engine features that are supplemented with power options through the use of electrical motor and battery participation. These engine features are not available in every hybrid automobile currently being sold at automobile dealerships or through private sales in society today. The hybrid engines are equipped with gas powered, or dual powered engines, as well as an electrical motor that renders power support when needed. There is a heavy duty battery that serves as a source of power as well.

Within the hybrid breed of automobile engine varieties, there is a mild hybrid category and a full hybrid category. While each of these categories contain the same equipment, the performance of that installed equipment can cause your automobile to operate on entirely different principles. The mild hybrid category consists of a gas powered automobile engine that serves as the propulsion mechanism to move your automobile down the street.

Paired with this gas powered automobile engine is an electrical motor, as well as a heavy duty battery that are snuggly connected throughout the engine maze of pipes and mechanisms that when energized can provide propulsion to move your automobile forward. The hybrid car engine is the only source of propulsion power in the mild hybrid engine model, and the electrical motor remains in standby mode to provide spurts of energy and power to aid the gas powered engine in passing vehicles on a highway or wherever else a sudden surge of power will be of benefit.

The full hybrid category consists of a gas powered automobile engine that is considered the propulsion mechanism as well as an energy saving device. An electrical motor and a heavy duty battery are also part of this full hybrid engine power force. The gas powered engine works hand in hand with the electrical motor to provide the necessary boosts of energy to cause the car to propel through traffic. When the car is stopped at a traffic light, the gas powered engine will cease to operate, and the electrical motor will take over in providing propulsion power for the car to move from the site. Once the car achieves a good level of speed, the gas powered engine in the hybrid car will automatically engage and cause the car to continue down the street under gas engine power. The heavy duty battery is continually charged by the electrical motor at the same time.

The energy savings are accumulated during the different stops and starts that the vehicle might experience as the automobile moves toward its destination. Whenever the gas powered engine is not engaged there is a cost savings realized in its lax state of operation. The hybrid motor is quite capable of consuming energy and generating the right amount of power at the same time. These moments of non-engagement will save the consumer money in gas cost every time the automobile is driven down the road.

In conclusion, there exist more logical advantages of owning a hybrid car which is an unstoppable growing trend and unconfrontational facts.

A Freudian Interpretation Of Enlightenment

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Sigmund Freud believed that human beings were motivated by two inner drives: eros and thanatos.

Eros was the drive for life, for more of it, for the abundance and fullness of it.

Thanatos was its opposite, the urge to overcome the disappointments of life by craving forgetfulness and, ultimately, oblivion through death.

While most of Freudianism has been debunked because his ideas, although exciting to the imagination, lack self-consistency, observed verification, and close correlation with reality, his ideas on life and death appear to have an axiomatic quality to them. This could be because these ideas have such a primal quality. It is difficult to deny they exist because a casual observation of any human life shows these two forces at work.

In fact, it may not be unreasonable to ask that since death is inevitable, we should not rush to it prematurely, by trying to arrest the quickening of our desires. Thanatos will have its day soon enough. Wisdom, perhaps, consists of simply embracing eros while it is still available to us.

When for a moment you stop thinking about all the things in your life that are not working very well and instead focus on the sensation of livingness, what you experience is joy. This joy is a powerful vibration. It stimulates more of itself and rises, if you let it, to the point of ecstasy, a place where you are standing outside yourself in exhuberant wonder at the miracle of it all.

Another interesting thing happens when you allow eros to have a say in your mien and predispositions. You experience a sense of communion and sympathy with other sentient beings. A corresponding reaction then manifests within them and they start to view you as a friend, as one who is aligned with their own urge for well-being.

This attitude, if allowed to continue, expands even more profoundly. From directing it to specific points of light, other places where sentience is vibrant, it moves to an all-encompassing, all-embracing perspective, where all things, living or non-living, close or far, familiar or unfamiliar start to correlate with your affection. You see not your own life or that of other beings, but a galaxy of Life. You experience not only your own awareness but that of all intelligence everywhere.

If pushed still further, you will fall into a mystical experience, where who you are is everyone, and in this oceanic consciousness of unification, life itself is seen as an infinitude and your view of thantos fades into viewing it as an illusion.

This idea is not a beautiful fiction. Examples of people who have reached this state, people like the later Lester Levinson or contemporary teachers like Echart Tolle, can be found.

The principle of eros then is one of circulation. It expands and explores, it connects with all, and it is in sympathetic vibration with all.

From this perspective, you find no opposite, no direct contradiction to eros. You step out of the realm of dualistic thinking. You enter the here and now and lose all interest in the then and there. Thanatos is exposed as an imposter. Instead, you appreciate that while forms come and go and entropy does appear to be a universal constant, consciousness itself never fades or dies but only transmutes itself into ever-widening arcs of comprehension of itself.

Yet the uplifting power of eros is rarely fully liberated in most human lives. People generally do not think of enlightenment as a possible future. If they do think about it, it is regarded as an anomaly best avoided. Their imagination is not inflamed by such visions.

The culprit for this narrow perspective is thanatos. It puts a lid on everything. You dare not hope too much, you dare not try too much, and you dare not say, feel, or think too much because of thanatos. Inherent in the cultural codes of most societies, encrusted in its mythos and logos, it has taken on a consensus reality.

Another way of looking at eros is love. Another way of looking at thanatos is fear. Love pushed to an extreme is liberation, but fear is what restrains love from full expression. The pursuit of enlightenment is the pursuit of pure being; it is a movement toward maximal allowing; it is a declaration of liberation. People who pursue it are those who desire to fully experience themselves, pushing their individuality until it expands into a universality. Most religions aim at fostering obedience, not release into true self-emancipation. They are corralled by a thanatos so subtle it is only discerned by the most acute, who upon suddenly discovering it may just as quickly repress it.

Eros is held in check by thanatos. When a person can get free of this bond, then life in its fullness is experienced and is embraced as an eternal factor. It is a rare and special experience; so rare and so special, in fact, that it is seldom even articulated. Thanatos has a way of squelching the idea of being more than human, of being more fully alive.

Goodbye Trips To The Gas Station

The Chevrolet Volt is a battery-powered, four-passenger electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional electricity to extend its range. The Volt draws from GM previous experience in starting the modern electric vehicle market when it launched the EV1 in 1996, according to GM Vice Chairman Robert A. Lutz.

“The EV1 was the benchmark in battery technology and was a tremendous achievement,” Lutz said. “Even so, electric vehicles, in general, had limitations. They had limited range, limited room for passengers or luggage, couldnt climb a hill or run the air conditioning without depleting the battery, and had no device to get you home when the batterys charge ran low.

“The Chevrolet Volt is a new type of electric vehicle. It addresses the range problem and has room for passengers and their stuff. You can climb a hill or turn on the air conditioning and not worry about it.”

The Volt can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours a day. When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the Volt can deliver 40 city miles of pure electric vehicle range. When the battery is depleted, a 1L, three-cylinder turbocharged engine spins at a constant speed, or revolutions per minute (rpm), to create electricity and replenish the battery. According to Lutz, this increases the fuel economy and range.

“If you lived within 30 miles from work (60 miles round trip) and charged your vehicle every night when you came home or during the day at work, you would get 150 miles per gallon,” Lutz said. “More than half of all Americans live within 20 miles of where they work (40 miles round trip). In that case, you might never burn a drop of gas during the life of the car.”

In addition, the Chevrolet Volt is designed to run on E85, a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Using E85, fuel economy of 150 mpg would translate into more than 525 miles per petroleum gallon.

General Motors has also announced it has awarded advanced battery development contracts to two suppliers to design and test lithium-ion batteries for use in the Saturn Vue Green Line plug-in hybrid SUV.

One contract has been awarded to Johnson Controls Saft Advanced Power Solutions, LLC, a joint venture between Tier 1 automotive supplier Johnson Controls and Saft. Another agreement was signed with Cobasys, in partnership with A123Systems. Cobasys, based in Orion, Mich., is a joint venture between Chevron Technology Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Chevron Corp., and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. A123Systems, based in Watertown, Mass., is a leading manufacturer of high power lithium-ion batteries.

The two test batteries, one from Cobasys A123Systems and the other from Johnson Controls Saft , will be evaluated in prototype Saturn Vue Green Line plug-in hybrids beginning later this year. While both are lithium-ion batteries, the chemistry differs significantly. The suppliers also use unique methods in the design and assembling of the battery packs.

Are Biker Boots Really Necessary Functional Or Just For Looks?

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

When people think about the image of a biker, one of the first things they think about besides the tattoos is the stereotypical black riding boots. In years past you would never see a biker out for a cruise without his boots. These days with the popularity of sport bikes and what we call “rice rockets” you see people riding them with tennis shoes on and you will see business people riding their motorcycle to work with dress loafers on. For hardcore bikers, this may seem to be sacrilegious but it is happening more and more. So, are riding boots really a functional necessity or just for looks?

If you have the nerve to walk up to a biker and ask him if his boots are functional or just for looks and whether they would ride their bike without them you will find that they would not get on their bike without their boots. Though you may be hard pressed to get an in depth explanation from them if you push a little they will tell you that while they like the look of their boots, the main reason they wear them is for protection.

There are inherent risks that we take when participating in biking but wearing motorcycle boots eliminates many of them. One of the first injuries that many bikers get is a burned leg from their own exhaust. This is a horrible injury that can take several weeks to heal and will still result in a large scar. By wearing the tall riding boots you are much less likely to be burned.

Of course there are many other reasons for wearing protective footwear, leathers, and helmets not the least of which is the risk of injury from being involved in an accident. Wearing thick leather pants and jackets can save your skin if you lay your bike down in an accident and the boots will save your feet. A helmet should always be worn, even if you don’t think it is cool. I have seen several people who have died in minor accidents because of head injuries that would have been avoided if they had worn a helmet.

Even though bikers will say that their reason for wearing the boots is mostly for protection, the classic biker look is a reason as well. I have friends who wear their biker gear even if they are driving their trucks. If you were to bring up the example of a sport bike rider wearing tennis shoes, they will tell you that observation makes their point that those people aren’t real bikers. Let’s face it some guy with a flashy windbreaker and tennis shoes riding a little rice rocket doesn’t make you want to lock your doors when he rides by, now does he?

Protecting Your Car With Auto Shipping Insurance

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Before you set a date to have your car shipped to its new location, either domestic or foreign, you should consider buying auto shipping insurance from the company you plan to use. Shipping insurance will protect your car in case of damage during transport or theft. Having extra insurance can offer you peace of mind while your car is in transit.

But not all auto shipping insurance policies are the same. Check with your shipping company to see if they offer a primary or excess insurance policy. A primary policy will cover damages to your car regardless of what your regular auto insurance will cover. An excess policy will only cover what your insurance company will not. Before purchasing either policy, be sure to call your auto insurance company to see what types of damages are covered under your current policy and then make a decision from there.

If you are transporting an antique or classic car, you may want to purchase extra insurance so that the car is covered completely. Buy enough coverage to cover the blue book value of the car. If possible, find an auto shipping company that specializes in shipping these types of vehicles. They usually use cargo units that are made to protect cars that are of greater value.

When shipping a car, you should take pictures of the car before it is loaded onto the truck. You should also conduct an inspection with the driver and write down previous body damage or scratches. This will help later on if you find new damage to the body of the car. Protecting your car begins by buying auto shipping insurance, but you will have to be proactive in making sure that you are able to file a claim and get the money you deserve if damage occurs during transit.

Choosing an auto transportation company may not seem too difficult, but you should get a few car shipping quotes and compare prices as well as service. Compare the cost of auto shipping insurance as well. This will save you money in the long run. Once you have chosen a company, make sure that you receive all paperwork and have the car inspected to make sure that it is running properly before shipping it.

After your car arrives at its destination, inspect the outside of the car to make sure that it is not damaged. File a claim immediately if you find damage to the body of the car. Depending on which policy you purchased, a primary or excess policy, you may have to contact your auto insurance company as well.

In most cases, your car will arrive in good condition. But by taking the proper precautions, such as buying auto shipping insurance and inspecting your car before the trip, you will be able to ensure that your car will be safe during transit.

Get Ready For Picking Up Your Car After Transport

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Picking up your car after transport will require the same attention to detail you exhibited before the car was loaded onto the truck for transport. Make sure you have all of your paperwork in order before picking up your car. This paperwork includes a condition report on your car before transport, auto shipping insurance, pictures of your car, and other paperwork that might have been given to you.

When you go to pick up your car, you will have to gather other paperwork including another condition report. File these papers away in case you find damage later on. It is also a good idea to take pictures after your car has been transported as well.

You should arrange to pick your car up during the day so that you will be able to see if there is damage anywhere on the body of your car. Have the driver or car transport service representative with you to verify any damages that you find. This will make filing a claim with your auto insurance company or with the car transport company a little easier. They should sign the condition report.

When picking up an imported car, you will have to arrange to have the car inspected by customs before you will be allowed to take the car home. After the car has been shipped, the car transport service should be able to tell you when the car will arrive and should call you when it actually does. This will make scheduling an inspection much easier.

If for some reason your car has substantial body damage, you should try not to become visibly angry. You should take pictures, make sure all documents are signed, and call your insurance company as soon as possible. This is the best way to handle this situation. Remember that it is up to you to write down all damages that you find and to take pictures. It is also up to you to talk to your insurance company or the car transport service when filing a claim. By remaining calm, people will be more willing to work with you.

If the car transport service does not want to cooperate with you once you have filed your claim, you may need to seek legal action. You should also file a claim with the Better Business Bureau.

Transporting your car should be a simple process. But problems can occur from time to time. Be prepared by having all of your paperwork ready to be signed and take plenty of pictures so that you will be able to file a claim as quickly as possible. This will allow you to be able to have your car repaired sooner than later. But most car transport services that will be able to safely transport your car either nationally or internationally without incident.

Learn The Ins And Outs Of Finding Truck Tires Online

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

My working career revolved around commercial trucks and commercial truck tires. I have purchased, studied, tested and sold many truck tire brands, styles and applications including light truck, industrial and earthmover tires. It seems that there was rubber in my veins from the very beginning.

I want to share some ideas and thoughts about locating and purchasing tires on line.

Finding the best deal on truck tires using the internet is becoming easier than ever to accomplish. From finding the correct recommendations based on our personal tire use experience and the very best price on those recommended tires, the internet can provide us choices in our tire purchases.

Of course we all know about the popular online auction websites, such as eBay. Here we will also talk about some new and exciting ways that the information age is making it easier to connect with the people, information and goods that interest us.

Online auctions are a great way to find something in a hurry. Whether you’re looking for a brand new item or a used one, popular auction houses are likely to carry whatever it is that you’re in the market for.

Particularly with brand new and popular items, you’ll notice that there are a number of auction items and unique sellers every day of the week. There’s a very good chance that you’ll be able to find a deal on truck tires that you can be happy with.

Beyond internet auction websites, there are consumer interest groups where you can find out more about which truck tires will last the longest and historically have performed the best. At these same Websites you’ll be able to also learn something about which sellers have the best rates or return policies.

And now for something completely different: Chances are you’ve used internet search engines to search for particular products. The search results are lists of web pages that may or may not actually contain information about the item or items that you’re searching for.

Google is taking another stab at the whole ball of wax by launching Google Base, which allows people to submit any item, piece of information or service to their database. These objects will then turn up in other areas of Google, from Froogle to search results to even Google Earth.

Theoretically, the more ‘tag’ and classification information that users input about their given Google Base item, the more likely it is to turn up in meaningful ways, connected to other people and search results that are similar or looking for similar things. Only time will tell how this experiment works out, but you may soon be finding truck tires via Google Base and saving a buck or two on decreased cost of business overhead that sellers on eBay have to deal with, for example.

Now, have fun on your truck tire adventure!

Motorcycle Riding Apparel

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

For my birthday this year, I’m treating myself to a brand-new Suzuki GSX-R. I’ve never owned a street-legal bike before, but after testing out a friend’s GSX-R, I knew I had to buy one. These bikes just look so good and are so exciting to ride that I can’t wait to get my very own!

But I’m also very big on safety, and will do everything in my power to ensure that I have only safe rides on my new bike. For example, I’m going to take a weekend safety course for motorcyclists at my local community college and I’m going to obey all the rules of the road when I’m out for a ride. Most importantly, I’m going to buy appropriate riding apparel and make sure I always wear a helmet when I throw a leg over my bike.

Motorcycle riding apparel is an important component of bike safety that many riders overlook. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen guys (and gals) on the road in only a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals. That’s a recipe for disaster, if you ask me. Proper riding apparel, such as leather jackets, gloves, boots, and maybe even pants, is necessary for protection in the event of an accident. I’m not going to outfit myself like a Hell’s Angel wannabe or anything like that, but I am going to make sure I wear the correct apparel whenever I’m on my bike.

In fact, I decided to buy some riding apparel even before I took delivery of my new GSX-R. I went down to a couple of dealerships in the area and checked out their selection of apparel, but didn’t find anything I liked. The stuff they had in stock wasn’t to my taste at all and was pretty expensive to boot. I then got the idea of searching for motorcycle apparel on the Internet. I didn’t know if that would be a cost-effective move since most gear is heavy and would probably be expensive to ship. But I decided to give it a try anyway.

I’m glad I did, because I found that a lot of dealerships from all over the country routinely sell discount motorcycle apparel on their websites. The prices on these products were very reasonable, plus the shipping costs wouldn’t be nearly as high as I had feared. In short, I ended up ordering two complete sets of apparel and will definitely go back for more whenever I need something new.

Now that I’ve got my motorcycle riding apparel, I’ll be ready to take that brand-new GSX-R out for a spin as soon as it gets here! I know how much fun motorcycles can be, but I also know that there are some real dangers involved. That’s why I’m not going to take any unnecessary risks and why I’ll always wear protective motorcycle riding apparel out on the road.

What You Need to Know about SUV’s

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

It is no surprise that SUVs are among the most popular cars in the United States. SUVs provide amble room, and can handle adverse driving conditions and surfaces. They are the perfect vehicle for the busy family on the go. There are a number of problems with SUVs, however, that need to be kept in mind while purchasing any new vehicle in order to ensure that you can purchase the very best SUV for you and your family.

Poteneial problems with SUVs

Fuel economy is always a concern when buying a new SUV. The average SUV is 33 per cent less fuel efficient that the average passenger car; with rising fuel prices, that can translate into an expensive drive. For instance, if you drive 15,000 miles a year with gas prices at $1.15 a gallon, you will end up spending an extra $420 a year on gas.

SUVs also have an unfortunate tendency to roll over during accidents. SUVs are more likely to roll over because they are far heavier than normal care and ride higher, on average, 8 inches higher than passenger cars. This has likely led to higher levels of fatal accidents in SUV crashes than passenger car crashes. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that rollovers accounted for 37 per cent of all fatal SUV crashes, as compared to only 15 per cent for passenger cars.

SUVs also usually result in higher insurance bills, thanks to the increased safety risk, higher maintenance costs, and the overall popularity of SUVs. On survey showed that SUV owners would pay between 5 and 19 per cent more for their car insurance because they own a SUV.

Which is the Best SUV for Yor Family?

How do you pick the best SUV from the over 80 different SUV models available for sale in the United States? The first step is to identify whether you want a small or full-sized SUV, and whether you will he content with a basic model, or if you want to go all out for a luxury model. Finding the perfect SUV is as much about finding a vehicle your pocket book is comfortable with as it is finding a vehicle that you are comfortable driving.

As with buying any type of car, the most important step in buying a SUV is research. You need to arrive at the car lot prepared, or the salespersons will be able to sell you something you do not really need or want. When you get your research done before you start looking at cars, you will be able to figure out what extras and options you actually need. So, read consumer magazines, look through message boards by current drivers, ask friends and family. It is only once you have done your research and have a general idea what you are looking for, you can start looking at cars.

You have to be sure you are absolutely comfortable with the SUV. There are a lot of models available for you as a consumer, so you do not have to content yourself car you are not truly excited about owning. Take your time, and ask a lot of questions about its safety features and fuel economy. If the salesperson does not have the answers you like or need, go somewhere else.

Of course, before signing any deal to pay for the SUV, be sure to take it for a spin. If you plan to take the SUV off-road, get the salesperson to take you somewhere where you can test this functionality. If you are buying the SUV to make the bumpy trip down your cottage laneway, you are not going to fully experience what that drive will be like by taking a smooth and straight drive down the freeway.

Truck Rental For Moving Home

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

Nearly all of us have to move house at one time or another and to do so we need to employ a removal company or hire a van or truck and do it ourselves.

Do it yourself house moves are hard work but hiring a vehicle from a truck rental company for a day or two instead of contracting a removal company can save you a lot of cash at a time when you need to be watching your budget very carefully.

Finding a truck rental company is a fairly straightforward matter. Simply type truck rental into a search engine and you will be presented with a large number of truck rental companies both in your area (assuming you live fairly near to a town or city) and nationally.

Essentially all you need is a driving licence and a current bill as proof of your address. The truck rental company will nearly always sort out insurance and any other incidentals. However you will normally be required to meet the fuel costs incurred.

They will be normally be able to offer a variety of models to suit your needs and will generally help you decide what size truck you will need based upon the amount of furniture or equipment you have to transport.

If you have never driven a truck before there is no need to panic as when you arrive at the truck rental company they will take you through all of the vehicles features and show you where the wipers, indicators, lights etc are.

If you are a particularly nervous person then you may wish to ask them if you can drive the vehicle around their yard to get a feel for it before venturing out on to the open road. Alternatively just stick to less busy routes until you feel confident of your abilities.

Driving a truck is very similar to driving a car except you have to be aware of the increased size of the vehicle. Some trucks do not have a rear view window so always make sure you regularly check the side mirrors especially when reversing.

Normally the truck rental company will inspect the vehicle with you and point out any marks and defects before they sign the vehicle over to you. This is to ensure that both parties are aware of any dents, scratches and general faults the vehicle may have so that everyone is clear of the vehicles condition both before and after you have used it.

Many national truck rental companies offer one-way rentals, which may or may not suit your needs.

Make sure you enlist the help of a friend so that when you get where your going you will have somebody to help you with lifting your furniture. Remember you are only renting the truck and not any removal men.

Car Contents – Leave Them Then Lose Them!

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

Anything you leave in your car is at risk of being stolen. Regardless of how worthless you deem an item to be it may hold some worth to a determined thief. An old coat may mean nothing to you but a thief may be more interested in what is in the pockets or perhaps what it is covering. The message is therefore simple, don’t leave items in unattended cars or else you risk losing them.

Car stereos along with clothes are the most common items stolen from a car. CDs and tapes, tools, laptop computers, mobile phones, satellite navigation systems, bags, briefcases, sunglasses and credit cards are all frequently stolen, and the reason these items are taken is usually because they are left in open view for all to see. Although stereos remain the most frequently stolen items, even shopping bags, cigarettes and loose change can encourage a break-in.

There are also telling signs of what could be in the car from items such as mobile phone and sat nav cradles on the dashboard which could lead a thief to suspect that such items may be hidden in the car. Do not hide anything, especially expensive items, in the glovebox or under car seats – these are the first places that any determined thief will look.

Many modern in-car entertainment systems have built in security measures, for example removable faces on the stereo itself. If yours has this feature, use it. Remove the face and take it with you, even if your leaving your car for just a short time – don’t hide it in your glovebox. Another modern feature is a built-in security code. This means that if the stereo is removed and fitted to another car the code is needed or it won’t work. Keep a note of your code number somewhere safe in your house and never anywhere inside your car. Also keep a note of the serial number of the stereo somewhere safe in your home.

With some older stereos you can remove the whole unit. Although it might not always be practical to carry the unit around with you, do so as much as you can, especially when leaving your car overnight or when you’re at work during the day. Etch the vehicle identification number and your postcode onto the stereo and mark it invisibly with an ultra-violet pen with your house number and postcode.

Around 150,000 tax disks are taken from cars each year. These can be tampered with and sold on to someone else. You can protect your tax disk with a tamper proof disk holder, available from the Post Office. This could save you the hassle of replacing a broken window or having to buy a replacement disk.

Fit a car security device, such as a car alarm and choose a good place to park to reduce the chances of someone breaking in to your car. Never forget to close windows, sunroofs and all lock doors.

Ultimately never leave anything valuable in your vehicle at anytime – even if for just a few minutes. Take all valuables with you and if you cannot then lock them away somewhere secure and out of sight such as in the boot. Remember that anything can be worth something to a determined thief. You may think that an item is worthless but a thief may see it another way. You also risk not only having the item stolen but also the inconvenience that comes with having to get broken locks, doors or windows repaired after a break-in. Always remember – leave it and you risk losing it!

Guide to Buying a Used Car

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

Whenever you buy a used car, regardless of whether it is from a dealership or private seller, then there are a couple of things that you need to consider so that you don’t end up buying a car that you might not get to own.

Firstly any used car runs the risk of being stolen and should you buy it then you still won’t be the proper owner. This means that if it is later discovered that the car is stolen then you will lose it and the money you have spent on it.

Secondly, when buying a used car you need to ensure that the car does not have any outstanding finance relating to it. This simply means that the previous, or original owner, paid it off properly and fully when it was first purchased. Failure to do so may mean that the finance company may have a legal claim to the car again leaving you without a car and without the money you spent on it.

When buying a used car there are a few simple precautions that you can take to ensure that you get a legitimate car that is safe for you and your family. When you buy a car from a dealership, choose one that has a good reputation. Ask around to see what other people think of them. If buying off a private seller then use your judgement about the seller to decide whether they are trustworthy or not. If something does not seem right or the deal seems too good to be true then it probably isn’t – don’t buy the car and consider contacting the police.

When buying a used car always ask for proof of identity and the address of the seller, such as a driving licence. This means that if you have any problems with the car or you are asked about the seller you will be able to have their full and proper details.

Also, only buy a used car that comes with its vehicle registration document (V5), and make sure that it is an authentic document with the DVLA watermark and that it has not been tampered with. On the V5 will be the vehicle identification number (VIN) which is a unique 17-character number issued to every vehicle by the car maker, and was previously known as the chassis number. You should check the VIN on the V5 matches matches the VIN which can be found in various places on or in the car.

The VIN can be found on a manufacturer’s VIN plate under the bonnet or fixed to the post between the front and rear doors; stamped on the body chassis or frame; or on an additional plate fixed securely to the top corner of the dashboard where it can easily be seen through the windscreen, known as a visible VIN. If you can’t find the VIN or suspect it has been tampered with then don’t buy the car and inform the police.

Finally to avoid buying a stolen or written off car, or one with outstanding finance, you can take advantage of a service offered by the RAC and AA that checks the legal status of the car. This will cost around thirty pounds but this may turn out to be a small amount compared to what you might lose if you buy a car that may later taken away from you.

Cars In The Movies

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

Since movies were first screened cars has featured heavily in them. The Movie Bullitt released in 1968 starring Steve McQueen although probably not the first movie to feature a car chase was undoubtedly one of the original car movies of all time.

Audiences were stunned by the intense and dramatic footage of a Ford Mustang and Dodge Viper screaming through the streets of downtown San Francisco.

Many movies have featured dramatic car chase scenes. In 1971 The French Connection, a thriller about two NYC cops in the narcotics bureau starred Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider. The film featured a thrilling car chase through busy streets of which the film is ultimately remembered for.

You would be mistaken to think the only reason cars would ever feature in movies would be for the sole purpose of an exciting chase. You would of course be wrong as many films have not only included cars in them but the car itself has been the main star.

In 1964 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a book by Ian Fleming was first published. The book was later made into classic movie with Dick Van Dyke in the lead role but of course the real star of the movie was the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The movie was essentially for children but it is one of those films that are entertaining for the whole family.

In 1969 we saw three Mini’s weaving through the traffic jammed streets of Turin in the fabulous The Italian Job starring Michael Caine. The red white and blue Mini’s were without doubt the stars of the movie which was later remade in 2003 and starred Mark Wahlberg.

In 1983 John Carpenters Christine was released. This was a story of a possessed regenerating car hell bent on killing. Arnie Cunningham played by Keith Gordon finds a Plymouth Fury in need of restoration. As Arnie rebuilds Christine he begins to change himself transforming from shy and nerdy to over confident and arrogant.

Possibly one of the most enduring and lovable of all cars in the movies is Herbie. Sporting the number 53 Herbie a Volkswagen Beetle has made five movies dating back to 1969 with his latest outing recently in 2005 starring Lindsay Lohan. The comical exploits of Herbie have won many peoples hearts with the main plot lines being David and Goliath natured.

Today cars in movies are still big box office draws. Pixar have recently released a movie witch features only cars in the line up. The animated adventures of Lightning McQueen voiced by Owen Wilson are hilarious and not too be missed.

Whilst we still drive cars in our lives there is no doubt they will be in our movies for years to come.

The monster vehicle that used to be available only to the United States Army is now obtainable for civilians through General Motor’s Hummer division. Hummers became the rave of the whole country after the highly popular Desert Storm in Iraq where its military counterpart, the HumVee, was featured endlessly. This popularity triggered worldwide demand and thus, the Hummer edition was created. Nowadays, military and civilians alike can avail themselves of these superb vehicles.

Hummers are available in three types of model: the H1, H2 and H3. H1 Hummers are generally the largest of the three. H3 models are those designed very much like other sports utility vehicles to suit a civilian consumer’s need for aesthetics. The H2 balances rider’s comfort and rough driving to the hilt. There are many more other sub models available under each type but none stands out more than the H2 SUT model.

The H2 SUT model incorporates a pickup and four-door SUV type, thus earning the name SUT. This innovative way of maximizing the benefits of a sports utility vehicle and a pickup truck gained much popularity from Hummer enthusiasts. General Motors have equipped this model with various features that would surely increase the demand for such a vehicle in the years to come.

This baby is powered by a Vortec 6000 V8 engine with 325hp and 4-speed automatic transmission. A variable throttle control with 2 different progressions allows for a precise control over rugged and off-road terrain. The H2 SUT also features a power glass window at the back of the cabin which can be folded down along with the second row seats to allow for a larger cargo area. Its flawless design allows the driver to sit comfortably behind the steering wheel without worrying about the SUT from nosing downward while braking hard.

Full leather interior with electrically adjustable seats make for a comfortable and enjoyable ride over any type of terrain. Bose speakers with separate audio sources for the second row passengers add to the beauty of this model. Overcoming Grief

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

During my first year of college a life-long family friend and mentor tragically lost his son. Separated by distance, I assumed that his Christian friends, the staff at his church, and his Sunday school class would step in and wrap their arms around him and his wife. Needless to say I was surprised, one year later, when we were able to finally meet face to face. When I asked him how he and his wife were doing the first words out of his mouth were, “Brian, the church failed us during our greatest time of need.” Knowing first-hand his maturity and emotional soundness, I was taken back. I thought, “If he said the church failed them, the church must have really failed them.”

Those who experience tragic loss, which I’m sure will include all of us by the time we leave this planet, experience sorrow that defies explanation. C.S. Lewis, struggling to put into words how he felt after losing his wife commented,

“No one ever told me that grief felt so much like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid. The same fluttering in the stomach, the yawning. I keep on swallowing.” (A Grief Observed , p. 19)

And if there was ever someone besides Lewis that couldn’t put their finger on the depth of their grief, it had to be Naomi.

The Book of Ruth tells us that Naomi was happily married to a man named Elimilech and together they had two strong sons, Mahlon and Kilion. As life goes, business took her family to a foreign country-a place called Moab. But even in that distant land their family blossomed. Life was good. Then, without even the faintest hint that heartbreak was standing at her door, Naomi’s husband didn’t return home for dinner. Who could have known that their kiss that morning would have been their last? Her sons eventually married, but even their weddings and talk of children couldn’t take away the emptiness she felt. Finally, in a cruel twist that even Hollywood wouldn’t script, she lost both of her sons. She was devastated, alone and bewildered. Naomi was so broken that Ruth 1:20 tells us that she began asking people to not call her Naomi (meaning “pleasant”) anymore but Mara (meaning “bitter”).

The bright spot, if there can be a bright spot in someone’s tragic loss, is that there was someone who didn’t leave her. Her name was Ruth, her daughter-in-law. We’re told she didn’t offer any deep theological explanations. There’s no record that she tried to provide the “right word” at the “right time.” All we hear is Ruth’s promise in Ruth 1:16, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay, I will stay.” And that’s exactly what she did.

I never asked my friend what his church could have done differently. I didn’t feel that it was my place.

My guess? Unlike Ruth, there were probably too many words and too few visits.

Simple Car Maintenance Tips

Last Updated: 2011/10/01

You drive your car everyday. Do you pay attention to it? Do you feel that slight shimmy in the front end? Is there a new knocking sound under the hood? Is there a rattle in the dashboard? No one knows your car better than you do. If you feel something different, or if it isn’t handling correctly take it to your mechanic. It could be something as simple as a tire out of alignment, or perhaps a loose belt. It’s always best to find any small problem before it becomes a large one.

Here are some simple maintenance tips that you can follow to help prolong the life of your car, and help save you money.

Notice where you park your car and get into the habit of looking to see if there are any leaks when you pull out. This can be very tricky in a public garage with lots of stains from leaks from other cars, but if your car is leaking any type of fluid, transmission, radiator or brake the leak will look “fresh”. If you see any fluid leaking have your car serviced as soon as possible.

Keep an eye on your tires. When you have your oil changed every 3,000 miles have your tires rotated. At this time the technician will inspect your tires for any wear. Keep your tires aligned. Check your tire pressure once every month. It’s easy enough to read tire gauges and they even have electronic ones. Keeping your tires properly inflated helps increase gas mileage too.

As mentioned above, change your oil at least every 3,000 miles. The oil is the life blood of your car and keeping fresh oil in your car can extends it’s life by many, many miles. At this time the technician will check your air filter, hoses and belts.

Keep your windshield washer reservoir full and carry an extra gallon with you. You don’t want to be caught without washer fluid, and you don’t realize how quickly you use it up, especially in the winter months when we get salt spray on the windshield. Replace your wiper blades once a year

Since man developed fondness for automobiles, the auto industry just grew bigger and more diversified. Almost every stage in the history of cars is marked by an invention, an introduction of a new design or car concept and a whole lot of new ideas aimed at improving car’s performance, style and safety features. Likewise, replacement auto parts market has thrived due to the growing demands of auto users. Hence, today, more choices of high quality auto parts and even accessories are available for your car repair, car maintenance and customization.
