How GPS Works

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigational aid originally developed for the military. The system simply receives signals. It is the applied technology that gives the GPS its versatility.

If you have ever used map and compass, you will understand a little about how the GPS works. In order to find your position on a map, you need to have three points of reference. The intersecting line from the reference points is where you are. Map and compass work uses triangulation (bearings), GPS uses trilateration (distances) to calculate location. Satellites orbiting the earth emit unique signals that can be received by a GPS. The GPS software interprets the signal, identifying the satellite that it came from, where it was located, and the time that it took for the signal to reach the system. Once the receiver has both time and distance it begins to determine position.

Three satellites provide the intersection point and the fourth is used to check that the positioning is accurate. Accuracy depends upon the synchronization of atomic clocks in the satellites with the clock in the GPS system. Although the clock in the GPS is not
atomic, utilizing the fourth satellite gives it that functionality as the internal clock adjusts itself to correct any discrepancy discovered.

GPS has gone far beyond its initial military application. Drivers can find their way through city streets, long distance trekkers use the technology to cross unfamiliar terrain, mariners and pilots use GPS enhanced data to cross the seas and skies.

In–vehicle GPS can be integrated into the car entertainment system or can be installed as a removable device. These systems need to tell the driver where he/she is and how to reach their destination. The information includes road directions plus relevant features along the way such as rest stops, gas stations, points of interest, etc. Auto GPS uses voice commands so that the driver can concentrate on the road.

Hikers and trekkers use similar technology, but normally without the inclusion of road systems on their devices. Mapping software defines the territory that the hiker will encounter. The user can enter waypoints (points of reference) so they can return using the same route. They can add points of interest such as water sources, possible campsites, and other items of interest on their trail. However, the portability demanded by hikers will also limit the functionality of the system as small screens mean that some detail will be lost.

It is GPS technology that is used to track individuals on home arrest, to trace missing pets, stolen vehicles, and missing people. Small systems can be incorporated into pet collars and wristwatches. As long as the receiver is active, it can be found.

Marine and aviation GPS units are sophisticated and specialized. The principles involved are the same as any standard system the software is much more highly developed.

Any fisherman, who is using a fish finder on his boat, is using a GPS that is enhanced by sonar and tracking devices. Units have been developed for use on float tubes also -– as GPS technology advances, the systems become more and more compact and their uses
more and more extensive.

If you are considering purchasing a GPS, make sure that it can be updated easily. This is especially true if you buy a multi–function GPS or one that is used where conditions change regularly. An in–vehicle GPS soon loses its usefulness if it is not updated as road systems change.

Updates vary according to the device being used. They can come in CD/DVD packages or as computer downloads. The user can purchase maps specific to the area in which the GPS will be used or a range of maps and routes. These are available from GPS software
companies who will charge proportionally to the sophistication of the software.

GPS units vary in price according to their usefulness. It is possible to buy units for less than one hundred dollars to units costing more than one thousand dollars. What your needs are
will be a factor in the cost of your unit. If you are a backpacker then portability is a major consideration. If you are a trucker, you need to be able to find a delivery point as quickly and conveniently as possible. Whatever device you go for, cost is generally related to quality. Buy the best you can afford.

Free GPS Software

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

I took a look at some of the online offers for free GPS software and found, like many “free” offers there were often limits and provisos involved. Often the freeware is a scaled–down version of purchasable products. Sometimes the free product has restricted functionality with features disabled, other products are trial–based and are disabled after a certain time (hours or days or use).

An example of limited free GPS software can be found at GPS Utility. The downloadable freeware is limited 100 waypoints and 500 track points. (There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.

There are online sites that list various free GPS software and describe how to use the programs after you download them. Often individuals who have used the programs themselves develop the sites. These are great because they give you an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of the programs before you use them.

Using free GPS software you can download programs that allow you to retrieve and display aerial photos, topographical maps, USGS landmarks. There are programs available that allow you import scanned images and add latitude and longitude points and other data.

Free GPS software downloads are available for PDA units that are capable of communication with GPS receivers. With these downloads you can have a useful navigation assistant, location database manager, and GPS data converter.

Programs to manage GPS waypoint and route files are available for both PC and Mac users. The waypoints and route files can be saved or converted to various formats used by other mapping programs.

If you need to transfer information to and from your GPS receiver and your home computer or laptop there are several free programs that allow you to do so. There are also programs that allow Garmin GPS receivers to “talk” to one another.

Many of the programs listed here are directed at the hiking/trekker community, but there are also free programs available for auto GPS systems and marine navigational systems. I found a couple of marine navigation programs that allow you to download nautical charts and plotters.

There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto–navigation system. If you intend downloading in–vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.

Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.

As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.

Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.

Once they were only for the rich and were only fitted in the very high end cars but today SatNav systems are available to all. You can either opt for the in-car fitted systems that are still quite expensive or you can go for the handheld or protable units. This article is about the latter.

What is SatNav?

SatNav is a system that comprises of 2 elements, a GPS data receiver and a CPU/display unit. The receiver gets information from orbiting GPS navigational satellites and communicates it to the CPU/display unit. This unit is then able to find its exact location on the planet by comparing signals from various satellites.

The unit incorporates road maps of the area and places an indicator on the map showing where the car is on the maps.

Features

The units allow you to plan a journey ahead of time and then the unit will guide you to you destination by displaying a map showing you where you are and the direction you should be heading. Most now have voice instructions so the unit will tell you, when you are approaching a junction, which turning you should take. The units are also capable of making real time adjustments to the route, this means that if you go the wrong way the until will recalculate the route to your destination taking into account the wrong turning you have just made.

Maps

The maps for the unit can be loaded for the different regions you visit, so they may have a map of the UK and another for France and so on. Most modern unit have the maps stored on a removable memory cards like SD cards or similar memory card but some units read directly from a CD or DVD. The display can be set to show the conventional flat map view or the new 3D view that shows a view as if it was above you and looking forward. This view is very good and clear.

Traffic

Some units offer systems that will warn you of road works/traffic jams etc as they happen, and offer suggestion as to how to avoid them.

POI

Most units have POI’s (Points of Interest) incorporated into them that will show things like garages, restaurants, historic sites, airport and ferries etc. You can also add your own POI’s of your favourite places. One POI that is very popular is the location of all the speed camera and accident black spot locations.

Weather

Another feature that is becoming increasingly available is the weather for a location. The system will tell you the weather at a certain location on the map i.e. at that beach location you are planning to visit.

When you want to plan a journey you will need to enter the start and end destination, this can be done in a number of ways, the city, street and house number. The street intersections, the post codes and a location chosen on the on screen map. The start can be done in the same way with the addition of the present location as the starting point (remember the unit knows where you are). There are then itinerary or way points, these allow you to program destinations along the way. Finally you are usually presented with choices of routes with choices like, Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Scenic Route, Avoid Motorways etc some have the choice to avoid toll charges.

Fitting

The units can be fitted into the car in a number of ways but the 2 most popular ways are with a mounting bracket that has a strong suction cup that sticks to the windscreen. The second way is a bracket that fixed to the cars air vents, this method can be very good but required a fixing for each type of car. The unit is then fitted to the brackets and adjusted to the best viewing angle.

There are dozens of systems available now with a variety of choices of the options available. You need to choose which of the above options are important to you and then choose the until that best suits you or suits you price range.

You can see a large variety of different units at different costs at my favourite comparason site www.wangled.co.uk just type in “Mobile GPS”

What to Know When Buying a GPS

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Why are GPS units showing up everywhere? You might find one in your rental car, on your wristwatch or even built into your wireless phone. Anti-theft systems use one, heavy construction equipment might use one and having one on your boat now seems to be a requirement. Anytime we want to know our exact location on the face of the Earth, the GPS becomes indispensable. Like many other technologies, feature rich GPS units are now affordable for the average person. So how do you know which one to purchase? Let’s look at few things to consider prior to buying your next GPS unit, but first, what is a GPS unit?

A GPS (Global Positioning System) unit has the primary function of calculating its own location on land or water by using satellite signals. Once the GPS unit knows its own location, it can help the user determine direction and distance to other known locations. For instance, a GPS on a boat can tell the captain how far it is to the shoreline or how far it is to a favorite fishing spot. For the outdoor sportsman a GPS can help with finding your campsite, your vehicle or your next geocache. Popular outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, fishing, trail running, backpacking, rock climbing, canyoneering and canoeing are all made more enjoyable and safer when you take along your GPS.

When buying a GPS system the first thing to consider is how you intend to use it. If you plan on using it while on foot, you’ll want a GPS that is lightweight, compact, weather resistant and that is equipped with features important to foot travel. WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) is one such feature. WAAS greatly increases the accuracy of your GPS, in most cases to within 10 feet. Accuracy within a few meters is important for the outdoor enthusiast but not nearly as important for navigating through town in your rental car. Next, be sure your GPS has at least 12 channels of reception too. Since your GPS will only work when it receives signals from satellites orbiting the Earth, less than 12 receiving channels will not get the job done in wooded areas or in steep terrain. If you plan on using your GPS to navigate while driving in your car, its weight is not nearly as important as its ability to display street maps. The GPS mounted to the dash of your truck probably doesn’t need to be weatherproof, but the one on your boat better be.

Here are the features and products I recommend. For the outdoor athlete or sportsman, be sure your GPS has these features: topographical mapping, back tracking, a computer interface, weatherproofing, 12 receiver channels and WAAS. I recommend portable GPS units in the Garmin eTrex Series and the Magellan Meridian Series. For driving applications, be sure your GPS has these features: street mapping, large display, a computer interface and external antenna compatibility. I recommend automotive GPS units in the Garmin StreetPilot Series and the Magellan RoadMate Series. For boating and other marine applications, be sure your GPS has these features: marine mapping, color screen, active sonar, back tracking, a computer interface and weatherproofing. I recommend marine GPS Units in the Garmin GPSMAP Series.

Prices for GPS units vary a great deal and in general, you get what you pay for. While some units cost around $100 and offer relatively few features, others may cost as much as $1000 or even more and are loaded with dozens of features. Here is a good rule of thumb for determining how much money to spend on your next GPS. You should expect to pay between $200 and $300 to get a decent GPS Unit. I own a Garmin eTrex Vista. I believe it is the best GPS available for under $300.

If you don’t have a GPS or yours is more than five years old, now’s the time to get one. Adding a new GPS to your inventory of backcountry toys will take your outdoor adventures to a new level of enjoyment. Use this information and you’ll Get It Right The First Time. Get Outdoors!

Modern ways to fight leukemia

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

It is a well know fact that we live in the age of technology. It seems that with the help of it scientist and doctors have come up with one of the most ingenuous ways of fighting the disease. A team of people lead by Mary Laughlin has shown the world that by using an umbilical cord transplant of blood, immediately after the patient has gone through quite severe doses of chemo therapy or radiation, about one third of the people showed a remarkable recovery. This would have never been possible in other cases, with other treatments.

This was an actual alternative to the bone marrow transplant. Because of cases of mismatches between patient and possible donors, doctors thought of the idea of using cord blood for transfer which is very rich in stem cells. The success was immediate. The thins is that this is the a great alternative for patients with leukemia because the blood that is used for the transplant does not have to be an exact match to be effective ( as in the cases of the bone marrow transplant).

The actual way that this blood is collected is actually very simple and risk free for everybody. The blood is retrieved from the fresh placenta of a mother that has just given birth to a child. This way the blood is saved after this being frozen and stored for safe keeping. The stem cells that can be found in the umbilical cord are actually immature blood cells that have yet to grow in either a red blood cell a white cell or a platelet. This stem cells can be used after a case of chemo or radiation therapy. They are inserted in to the bone marrow of the patient so that the normal functions of producing normal healthy blood cells can begin again at full potential.

The fact is that the treatment was used intensively on children, because of the fact that they are not yet matured and that production of certain cells in their bodies is much more easy to do then in grown ups. For them creating a whole new immune system was actually quite easy. In the cases of older people usage of the treatment was not yet done because certainty of a good result did not exist. But, still, after trying it on grown ups too results have been found to be very impressive. By only using a small quantity like 2 ounces of cord blood, the sick body can regenerate its immune system. The best thing about it was the fact that the blood didn’t necessarily have to be a perfect match with the one of the donor.

A lot of work is still being done in this field and results are beginning to be more and more interesting.

How To Choose Videoconference Carts

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Are you tired of looking for good quality videoconference carts? What are they, you ask? There is really no need to explain video conferencing carts – they are furniture built to hold video conferencing equipment. Video conferencing carts come in a variety of designs to suit different purposes.

Surprisingly, there is nothing special about their construction. At times, they even look like ordinary shelves or cabinets with wheels.

Video Conferencing Carts – Go By Function

Choose a video conferencing cart that’s suitable for your needs. Video conferencing cabinets are a common and cheap alternative. They are similar to TV cabinets. The glass doors help keep your video conferencing equipment free from dust. The small size also makes it extremely portable, good when you have to drag it across rooms.

If you need to show video to a larger audience, only a tall video conference cart will do. These tall video conferencing carts are usually similar to video conferencing cabinets, except that the vertical support bars can be adjusted very high.

If you need a sturdier piece of equipment, choose a video conferencing cart with an all-steel construction. Video security cabinets with monitor enclosures can be a great investment, too. These large carts are often bulky and made of high-grade materials that will last for a very long time. If you need a versatile cart, you can choose a multi-purpose cart that can serve as a monitor and projector stand.

When making the purchase, be sure to inspect the item thoroughly. Check the wheels to make sure that they glide smoothly. Make sure that the frame is durable and the vinyl or paint covering is made well. Finally, ensure that the height is appropriate. A short one will not do and it is preferable to choose the tallest model available.

When the subject of conferencing is confusing so many, Jon Butt’s site at http://www.conferencing-explained.com does exactly what it says on the tin. Explaining the facts and fiction about web, video, audio and teleconferencing, how this latest technology can save you money, the equipment you need or don’t need, the best call plans and where to find the best prices and value online.

If you think continuing education, or lifelong learning, is important to the success of your business, then you need to think about how much time you, or your staff members, spend on attending a traditional class or seminar. First you’ve got to get into your car and drive to wherever the meeting is, wasting precious hours in traffic. And being on time just isn’t enough! You’d better arrive early so you can get a good parking spot, register, and get a halfway decent seat. Then you can twiddle your thumbs or reread the agenda five or six times while you sit there and wait for the course to begin. And when it’s over you’ve got to walk back to your car, despite inclement weather, and drive back to your office. So, now you’ve spent three or more hours of your busy day to attend a one-hour class.

Whether it’s making the leap from employee to entrepreneurship and starting your own business, excelling in your current career, seeking a better job, motivating your staff or managing your time and money — there is a way to gain access to personal and professional knowledge, camaraderie, and one-to-one interaction simply by using your telephone. Teleclasses are a great way to effect positive change in your life. Telecommunication is the buzzword – and virtual classrooms, teleclasses, tele-seminars, tele-learning or conference call classes are the wave of the future!
Teleclasses are offered on a wide range of business and personal development topics and are an exciting, innovative way to attain valuable information, explore new ideas and gain new skills. You can examine your spirituality, inspire your life through the arts, learn a craft, dialogue on best places to travel, learn to create better relationships, learn to eat better or exercise to improve your health and fitness, or just simply have fun.

A teleclass is much like a regular class – except it brings the classroom to your doorstep! The technology is as simple as punching the digits on a telephone and the returns are immense! You simply dial into the conference call at a designated time announce yourself to the other class participants, and the program begins. The facilitator/teacher makes a presentation and there are usually questions and comments, followed by a lively and robust exchange of ideas. A major perk is that most teleclasses are offered at a variety of times and dates, allowing you to schedule them at your convenience.

Usually one-hour in length, and fully interactive, teleclasses can be accessed from your desk, your home, your car, a pay phone or even your hotel room. Best of all, the cost is significantly less than a traditional class or seminar when you consider travel and time making tele-learning an extremely affordable knowledge tool. Teleclasses offer positive and essential education, using technology as a tool for communication with strong and consistently positive results. And when the program ends, you hang up the phone. And guess what, your one-hour class took exactly one hour!

One distinct advantage is that you can interact with other people that have different ability levels, skills and backgrounds, who can be from almost anywhere in the country or the world. You can take a class just for yourself or you can set up a teleclass that everybody in your company can take simultaneously. The groups are usually small, 20 or less, so everyone gets individual attention through instruction that is both topical and focused.

Teleclasses are a hassle-free, money saving alternative to traditional “in person” seminars and classes. NO Travel – NO Parking fees and you get cutting-edge, innovative and customized learning in an informal setting with a select group of people who, like you, want to take command of their learning experience and aren’t afraid to take risks to increase their knowledge base and accelerate their development! So the next time you contemplate taking a seminar or a class to improve your business, personal or interpersonal skills — you might want to make it a teleclass.

Rick Sherréll is the founder of Pro Speakers Bureau (http://www.ProSpeakersBureau.com), an Atlanta-based agency that delivers high-quality speakers, trainers and subject matter experts as well as a variety of teleclasses, seminars and special events. Real Estate Article Marketing; Ka ching! Ka ching!

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Real Estate Articles are a great way of promoting your products and services. In many instances it can be accomplished at relativly little cost, and is a proven method of boosting your sales; doubling and even tripling it in some instances.

Here’s how it works!

Write articles relating to your website and submit them to “free content” submission sites. It’s easy to do, takes little time and can increase your website traffic, sales and of course, your income.

How can this be?

Well, your articles on free content sites contain links to your own website. Readers, after reading your articles, may choose to click on the link and pay you an unexpected visit.

Having them on the free content sites also makes them available to other webmasters who may wish to publish your articles on their sites. If they do, your article will include a link back to your site. And anyone who reads the article on that site can still click on the link to visit your site.

As the list of your published articles grows, and more and more of them are appearing on different websites, the total number of links to your site increases, too!

Major search engines are placing a lot of significance on incoming links to websites to determine the importance of the sites.

The more incoming links your website has, the more importance search engines will attach to it. This will then increase your website’s placement in the search results.

If you promote listings and other real estate services the links that your articles achieve will mean more potential customers for you. Even if visitors only browse through, you never know when they might be in need of what you are offering in the future.

There are also those who already have specific things they need on their mind but cannot decide yet between the many choices online. Chances are, they may stumble upon one of your articles, get interested by the content you wrote, go to your site and became enticed by your promotions. See how easy that is?

Search engines do not just index the websites, they also index published articles. They also index any article that is written about your website’s topic. So, once someone searches for that same topic, the list of results will have your site or may even show the articles that you have written.

And to think, no effort on your part was used to bring them to your site. Just your published articles and the search engines.

It is no wonder why many webmasters are suddenly reviving their old writing styles and taking time to write more articles about their sites than other means of promotion.

Getting their site known is easier if they have articles increasing their links and traffic and making it accessible for visitors searching the internet. Since many people are now taking their buying needs online, having your site on the search engines through your articles is one way of letting them know about you and your business.

The good thing with articles is that you can write about things that people would want to know about. This can be achieved in the lightest mood but professional manner, with a little not-so-obvious sales pitch added.

If you think about it, only a few minutes of your time is spent on writing one article and submitting to free content site. In the shortest span of time also, those are distributed to more sites than you can think of. Even before you know what is happening, you are getting more visitors than you previously had.

If you think you are wasting your time writing articles, fast forward to the time when you will see them printed and wide-spread on the internet. Not to mention the sudden attention and interest that people are giving your website and your products or services.

Try writing some articles and you will be assured of the sudden surge in site traffic, link popularity and interest. Before you know it you could be doubling and even tripling your earnings.

The Internet provides a practical venue for the conference call. With its low cost and ability to accomodate many listeners it is now practical to open a conference call to almost anyone (at least to listen). Many firms now do. For example, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal related how IOMEGA does this as an efficient way to control the irresponsible babble on Internet bulletin boards. People posting idle chatter now attract accurate responces from others who have heard the actual story on a conference call. As a result, the irresponsible postings are controlled.
Naturally, investment professionals complain that this allows the novice to access raw information that needs interpretation by someone more knowledgable – namely such a professional. However, companies like the ability to make one public statement, and then be free from goverment limitations on how investment information must be released. And individual investors like it too, as access to this information gets them access to information that once only slowly reached the average investor. Even Chairman Levitt of the SEC sides with the theory of greater access for the masses. According to an article in the 24 May 1999 issue of the Wall Street Journal, the NASDAQ has even funded a pilot program to pay for public access to conference calls. Firms such as DELL and Cosco are early participants.

Using the Internet has many advantages besides the instantaneous international release that results. It is possible to save the audio files so that the call can be accessed later at a more convenient time. Plus it would be possible to edit out meaningless portions to provide sort of a “Cliff Notes” of each conference. Naturally, there are some limitations. If everyone could ask a question, real brawls could result as the conferences became uncontrolled. So most Internet systems limit who can ask a question.
An outstanding advantage for the average investor is to witness directly a firm’s management in action. While the information might be the same, an investor gains confidence in management that presents a virtuoso performane over one that is defensive, hesitant, and obfuscative. The details aside, the speed of responce and other items that don’t get incorporated in an analyst’s report can add a lot to one’s understanding. Previously, a small investor’s only such access might have been at a company’s annual meeting.
Several firms have opened to provide investment-related conference-call services in one form or another over the Internet. Some require membership and user fees, but the trend seems to be toward company funding of the low cost service, and free or very low cost access by the public. According to the WSJ article mentioned above, firms now providing some for of access include: Vcall (Philadelphia), broadcast.com (Dallas), c-call.com (Street Fusion, (San Fransisco), and CCBN.com (Boston). Expect that more and more firms will offer the public Internet conference call. Encourage firms you are interested in to do so. This form of communication is yet another form of ultimate corporate democracy.

Video Conferencing – An Introduction

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

With videoconferencing people can interact as if they were talking face to face with both images and sound relayed in real time. This article is designed to guide you through the various options to arrive at the system type best suited to your purpose.

There are various types of videoconferencing which is suitable for your application will depend upon the IT structure available and what it is that you actually want to achieve.
Video conferencing has in the past been relatively expensive, but prices are coming down and it is possible for anyone with a fast enough internet connection to operate a video conference.

Systems are available for hire, lease or sale.

Systems may be installed at all or any of the following: -

  1. on the desktop PC
  2. a dedicated videoconference suite
  3. mobile – for use when and where the need arises.

Each has various advantages and limitations which may be critical to your purpose.

Paradoxically it is far more critical that audio connections are maintained than the video. You may loose a video signal or it may be intermittent but the conference will still proceed – if you lose audio, nothing can be achieved (unless both parties are versed in sign language!)

Video speed for equipment is often shown as frames per second abbreviated as FPS.

In the UK video from most sources runs under the PAL standard which 25 frames per second – e.g. domestic VHS players. In the USA the system is NTSC which runs at 30 frames per second. Videoconference equipment commonly is specified as 15 fps or 30 fps. In layman’s terms – 15 fps will be jerky, it shows every other frame, 30 fps is full motion video.

The higher the frame rate the greater the data load, so the faster the connection required.

A minimum requirement for full motion video and audio between two points is 768 Kbps.

This made up of:- an encoding rate of 384 Kbps (typically used) is selected. This is broken down into two parts –

  • 64Kbps is for the audio
  • 320 Kbps is for the video.

The resulting 384 Kbps stream is compressed and sent (from you – the source) to the remote point (the destination). Similarly a 384 Kbps stream is received from the remote point to you. Thus twice 384 Kbps in bandwidth is required.

If there is a lot of motion in the video, very little compression is achieved. If there is little or no motion in the video, the savings can approach 50%. It would, however, be foolish to design a system which relied on the participants being forced to remain static.

There are two types of video conferencing, each has sub-types.

  1. Point to point – a live video / audio communication between any two locations.
  2. Multipoint – links between a three or more locations

Point to Point (P2P)

Point to point – a live video and audio communication link between any two locations.

P2P – Application

Where the need is to communicate between two points only at any one time: -

  • Two offices of the same company
  • Yourself and a business partner company, e.g. Yourselves and a major supplier
  • Senior management/ teams from two divisions – e.g. research and manufacture.

P2P – Use

  • Virtual meetings on a one to one basis
  • Project workgroup co-ordination of effort, live adjustment of data, drawings, documents or prototypes
  • Virtual board meeting between two groups of people in specific locations – say 5 in one and 4 in another

P2P – Limitations

  • Bandwidth required increases in proportion to the amount of data being exchanged.
  • Audit trail of actions taken by whom with a timeline sequence often required.
  • Extra equipment is necessary to show physical objects, using a visulaiser for say engineering parts

Point-to-Point Videoconferencing

Consider two videoconference terminals (vct) that are connected to the Internet.

The vct and its associated peripherals allow the user to make a call to another client, send the local audio/video stream to the remote client, and hear/view the received audio/video stream on a local speaker/monitor that is connected to the vct.
Assume one user (the local user) uses a vct to call a user at a remote vct by entering the IP address of the remote vct. The clients setup a call between the stations following the specifications of the H.323 protocol. Once the call is setup, the clients exchange audio/video streams over the Internet. The point-to-point videoconference continues until one of the users “hangs up” the call.

IP numbers are difficult to remember some users have dynamically assigned (DHCP) IP numbers that can change every time they boot their system and problems in using IP addressing when different vendor systems are used.

The Gatekeeper

To alleviate the problem of IP dialing, the H.323 standard defines the use of a gatekeeper.

The gatekeeper is a system that connects to the Internet just like the client terminals. The IP address of the gatekeeper is configured into the client terminals and when the clients “power up”, they communicate with the gatekeeper and transfer certain information to the gatekeeper that describes the vct.

When the clients register with the gatekeeper, they pass their IP numbers, H.323 alias, and H.323 extension to the gatekeeper where it is stored. This allows a local user to dial a remote user by entering the remote users H.323 extension in effect their video telephone number.

The local vct communicates the H.323 extension to the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper then checks to see if the remote client is registered with the gatekeeper, then sets up the call between the two clients.

Once the call has been setup, the audio/video streams flow directly between the clients over the Internet.

Multipoint

Live video and audio links between a three or more locations.
To handle this situation, the H.323 standard introduces the concept of a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU). The MCU can be thought of as a “video bridge”. The MCU connects to the Internet and registers with the gatekeeper.

A MCU, depending on its design capacity, can handle a certain number of simultaneous videoconferences each with each videoconference being logically separate from the others and with each having a specified number of users.

When users want to join a particular videoconferencing session, they dial the service number/password combination. The gatekeeper checks to see if that service has been registered by a MCU. The gatekeeper completes the call by connecting the client to the specified videoconference on the MCU.

Once the call has been connected, the client’s audio/video stream is then sent over the Internet from the client to the MCU. Similarly, other clients connect to the session and send their audio/video streams to the MCU. The MCU selects one of the audio/video streams on the videoconference and returns that audio/video stream to all of the clients (that is all except the client whose stream was selected).

There are several methods for selecting an audio/video stream. Audio switching and chairman control are two alternatives. Typically, the method that is chosen is audio switching where the MCU selects the stream that currently has active audio (someone is talking or is talking the loudest).

As the user(s) at one site stop talking and the user(s) at another site start to talk, they capture the MCU. The process is repeated with the video from the newly selected site now being sent to all the other sites.

Streaming

To participate in a H.323 videoconference, users must have appropriate videoconferencing client terminals and have Internet connectivity with sufficient bandwidth to support the videoconference.

Some users may not have these capabilities but would still like to be able to participate even if that meant that they could only see and hear conference participants but not be able to interact with them. (Watch and Listen)

Users can receive the stream using a browser on a computer. They enter the URL of the server, and the server starts the encoded audio/video stream over the Internet to the computer.
Plug-Ins for the browser exist that are capable of decoding both RealVideo and Windows media streams. The user can thus see and hear the participants in the streamed videoconference in near real-time.

Alternatively, a user can connect to the server at a latter date and view the archived version of the videoconference.

Wedding Budgeting Tips

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

Your wedding dress:
Start shopping right away. You won’t feel rushed or pressured into buying something, and you’ll be able to shop smart.

Simple plain dresses are usually less expensive then the ones with lace, pearls/beads etc..

You could buy a plain dress and add lace, beads etc.. yourself. Or get someone to do it for you.

Rent or borrow a dress. If you like your mother`s, sister`s or friends dress ask them if you could borrow it. But don`t be offended if they refuse as a wedding dress is very sacred to most women.

Look around second hand shops/charity shops. You`ll be surprised at the amount they get given, and they are usually inexpensive.

The venue:
Book the ceremony/reception well in advance you may be able to negotiate a better price then you would if you left it to the last minute.

Have your wedding on off-peak months. November to April rates will probably be reduced. Christmas weddings are more expensive though so if you are planning a Christmas wedding you will have to cut your finances.

Instead of a grand ballroom or banquet hall, think less-expensive venues, like publicly owned buildings and parks, registry office, the church or temple hall, the backyard, the beach, a restaurant’s private room. You may have to get a permit to marry in a public place, but it will be less than a private banquet room.

Catering:
Look around for caterers. Get different quotes before you decide on one.

Choose cheaper entrees, like prawns instead of lobster, vegetables like broccoli instead of asparagus will cut the cost, too.

Cut down on courses. If you’re having a cocktail hour, do you really need an appetizer course? Do you need soup and salad?

Instead of waiter service, have a buffet bar.

Think ethnic! Mexican, Indian, Italian, or Chinese food is fun and much cheaper per person than the traditional wedding menu. See if your favorite restaurant caters.

If you are having a themed wedding create your menu around the theme.

Have the wedding cake only as dessert and eliminate any other sweets (eclairs, pastries, etc.).

Consider a wedding breakfast or brunch (omelettes, muffins, pancakes, French toast), or a tea (a variety of tea flavors, finger sandwiches, scones and jams, etc.) to save money.

The more tiers and decorations your cake has the more expensive it will be.

Buy your own drink it will work out a lot cheaper then paying the caterers or venues prices.

Photos:
Compare hourly fees and package deals to see which is more cost-effective for you.

Give disposable cameras as wedding favours. Then you can get copies of the days events from family and friends.

Have a professional photographer take the formal pictures and shoot the ceremony have guests take all reception photos.

Visit your local college`s photography department and check out some of the students’ portfolios. They will do your photography a lot cheaper and just as good as a professional

Ask friends and family to video the big day for you.

Flowers:
Use flowers that are in season and/or locally grown they’re less expensive than out-of-season flowers that must be shipped to your area.

Have bouquet with just a few large flowers, like orchids, tulips, lilies, or sunflowers, tied with a ribbon.

If you are marrying at Christmas or Easter, your church may already be decked out beautifully.

Arrange to share the cost of ceremony decorations with the couple marrying directly before or after you that day.

Use silk or dried flowers instead of fresh ones in table centerpieces.

Music:
DJs are less expensive than live bands.

Ask a family member or friends child to sing at the reception.

Hire music for the evening reception only. People are usually to busy chatting to notice any way.

Ask at the local college/university for young musicians.

Invitations:
Send invitations that are light enough when completely assembled to require only a single stamp for mailing.

Make your own invitation cards. They are cheaper and more personal.

If you are having a themed wedding make cards to do with the theme.

Transportation:
Limousines are cheap enough to hire for an hour. Find out in advance how long the ceremony will take.

Only hire a limo for the bride and groom have attendants driven in relatives’ cars, or have them drive themselves in groups.

You might be able to hire a horse and carriage for just as less. Check the Yellow pages for any in your area.

We hope these are of some use to you. Good luck

1) It is cheap. The prices on webconferencing services have come way down in recent years. What used to cost literally hundreds of dollars has since deflated down to extremely affordable prices. Snoop around the web and you will find that decent webconferencing services can be had for as little as $20 per month. Buyer beware should be the rule as usual but this stuff isn’t only for $100 million dollar businesses anymore.

2) The productivity boom. Webconferencing can drive your business to be more productive. No doubt. More than half of my day used to be wasted going to and from meetings. Cutting out just 15% of travel time can make a huge difference. Wouldn’t you rather be doing something else besides waiting to go to meetings? Webconferencing can significantly cut down on your wasted time and can help your business become more profitable also.

3) The technology is there. The technology has piggybacked the broadband revolution. What used to be choppy video in a 3 inch by 4 inch square has turned fully interactive, multiuser, and full screen. Webconferencing is big, stable, and enjoyable. This part of the internet has come a long way since 1999.

4) Webconferencing is good for environment. Another bonus is that webconferencing allows you to save commuting time and therefore we use less fossil fuels. Everyone could deal with less global warming. The computer time used to webconference must be amortized in here somewhere as making and running a computer isn’t exactly fantastic for the environment. However, the few hours it takes to webconference surely outweigh the environmental damage that 5 people running their cars does to our planet.

Check out webconferencing. You’ll be amazed how far it’s come and how far you could go with it!

A Brief Guide to Audio Conferencing Services

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

Audio conferencing provides a way for businesses and other groups to interact, without having to travel to each other’s offices. The savings in time and travel expenses quickly make up for the cost of audio conferencing services and equipment. Audio conferencing usually involves other types of teleconferencing technology, such as video and collaborative software. Collaborative software is software that one user may send to other users for simultaneous viewing and modification. For example, if the group wants to work on a diagram, it can be seen and drawn upon by anybody in the conference via a special electronic whiteboard.

An audio conferencing system can be rented, bought from a vendor or reseller, or hired as part of a full audio conferencing solution. Such full-service packages include human support services like management, marketing, and tech support.

When audio conferencing services are rented, the communication is routed through the vendor’s server software. The client is charged according to the number of users or “seats” who will be participating, the length of time each seat will be participating, and any initial equipment rental or purchase costs. The vendor can charge a per-seat and per-minute fee (for example, $0.15/seat/minute). Alternatively, a client can rent the service by the week, month, or year, with a maximum allowed number of seats per conference or session. For example, a one-week service for five seats could cost $100 a week, while a one-year service for 100 people could cost a few thousand dollars. Rental audio conferencing services are best for small to medium sized businesses where the initial equipment purchase costs would far outweigh the savings on travel.

When audio conferencing services are bought, the communication is routed through the client’s server software, which is bought and licensed from the vendor. The client chooses how small or large a package he or she wants. For example, the client can buy software that allows for 100 seats, 1000 seats, or much more. The client can decide whether to include any of a number of high-tech add-ons such as whiteboard capabilities, and whether expandability is important. The client buys all the necessary equipment and software to run the system. The initial cost can be tens of thousands of dollars, so these are best suited to larger numbers of seats over the long term. However, tech support will always be a necessity, so the client should subscribe to the vendor’s expertise.

VOIP Communication Technologies

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

Using the Internet to make cheap long distance PC to phone calls is the main reason why so many people resort to VoIP solutions. Applications based on the VoIP technology and used to make PC to phone calls are available with any Internet telephony service provider and are easy to set up and use. The advantages of Internet telephony comprise not only the low costs of PC to phone calls, but also the high quality of voice and file transmissions.

VoIP applications for making PC to phone calls are widely chosen to replace regular landlines. The spreading of Internet telephony has increased along with the number of people who are able to get a broadband Internet connection. When it comes to using the VoIP technology for making high quality PC to PC or PC to phone calls, a high-speed connection is essential. As any Internet telephony service provider will inform, dial-up is generally too slow and there is no guarantee that all data packages are safely transmitted. With this technology, a stable protocol like SIP is generally used to transmit data packages quickly and effectively.

Dropping your regular landline in favor of a VoIP solution offered by an Internet telephony service provider does not mean you lose any of the services you are used to. On the contrary, with Internet telephony you have only to gain. PC to PC calls are free, while PC to phone calls have very low costs. When using a VoIP application, you have an option to buy credit for prepaid phone calls. If you examine the fees for PC to phone calls, you will realize long distance calls are infinitely cheaper if you decide to go for Internet telephony and give up traditional phones.

Apart from the low costs of prepaid phone calls, high quality is a major reason why so many choose VoIP solutions. Whether you make PC to PC or PC to phone calls, you will have no communication problems. Clarity and lack of variation are distinct advantages with Internet telephony, possibly because the transmission of data packages is commonly made through the SIP protocol. Anyone interested in getting a VoIP application from an Internet telephony service provider will realize that making PC to phone calls poses no difficulties. All these applications have a user friendly interface, very similar to that of the phones you are already accustomed to.

Both household users and companies are frequently worried by the high budget they must allot to communication through the telephone. This is no longer the case for those who decide to replace their traditional landlines with VoIP applications. Once you settle on the use of your computer to make regular PC to phone calls, you will become aware that your budget for telephony can significantly decrease. Moreover, you get to save when it comes to equipment. Using a VoIP application means you no longer need other phones because a headset with earphones and a microphone will suffice, whether you make PC to PC or PC to phone calls.

VoIP solutions go beyond what standard telephony has to offer. Apart from being able to make PC to phone calls, by buying credit for prepaid phone calls from your Internet telephony service provider, other types of data transmission are also possible through the SIP protocol. If both users have the same VoIP application, they can transfer files and make PC to PC calls. Other services available with Internet telephony, apart from the very advantageous prepaid phone calls for PC to phone calls, are options such as call forwarding, call waiting, three-way calls and even video data transmissions.

If you are not familiar with Internet telephony and VoIP, you can not take long in finding out the basics. You can learn how to use the applications offered by any Internet telephony service provider in no time because they look extremely familiar. Once you’ve set up your chosen application, you can buy credit for prepaid phone calls and make all the PC to phone calls you need, without worrying about the costs. Low cost in the case of PC to phone calls is only one of the VoIP advantages. This is why Internet telephony is recommended instead of regular telephony services. If you switch to a broadband phone today, you can be sure to notice the benefits with a more effective communication, both in terms of quality and costs.

Nokia: Are they on top to stay?

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

Just this week, Nokia released music phones into
the market. With the ability to store
approximately 100 albums, the consumer has access to all the music they could
ever want to hear. Is this what the
consumer wants from their cell phone?

The fact is Nokia, with headquarters in Finland, is on top for a reason. They not only listen to what the consumer
wants-they do something about it. They
are the world’s leading cell phone manufacturer and if things continue the way
they have been, they will continue on their roll. With a global market share of approximately
34% in the second quarter of 2006, they’re aiming higher by releasing new and
improved models.Nokia’s new release, the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic holds about
1500 music tracks on their 2 GB microSD card and users can listen to their
music while they use other features, like texting or the camera. If you want to listen to music in a public
place, just plug in your headphones and if you prefer to listen to the music
you’ve saved on a stereo, you can simply utilize their Nokia Wireless Audio
Gateway AD-42W and you can play your music on any stereo. The Nokia 5300 also has other top quality
functions such as a 1.3 mega pixel camera and high-resolution video ring
tones. When it becomes available, the
consumer should be able to purchase for just over $300.

The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, however, is not the
only music phone they’ve come out with.
The Nokia 5200 also gives the consumer top quality music functions and
will cost the consumer approximately $250.
The Nokia 3250 XpressMusic is of a different design, giving it a more
unique look and consumers will still be able to hold about 1500 music
tracks. More expensive, it will retail
for approximately $500.

Nokia has come a long way from when it came out
with the first mobile phone in the 1970’s in the form of field radios for the
Finnish Defense Forces. However, it
wasn’t until the late 1980’s that the mobile phone technology allowed for
international calls and the cell phone craze began. From then on, Nokia has remained on top, even
with some difficulty it faced in 2004 when they failed to adapt to the market
trends. While they have been behind
others in new design innovation, Nokia is working to reestablish themselves
among their competitors as has plans to retain their number one position in cell
phone technology.

While cell phone technology may one of Nokia’s top
income producing departments, Nokia has their hands in many different
things. Nokia Enterprise Solutions
provides a wide variety of businesses with a vast array of business solutions. They also have divisions in multimedia and
networking, putting them at the forefront in the technology of today.

Nokia has the right outlook-they want to keep the
consumer happy and the consumer continues to be the top priority for
Nokia. Their continuous goals are to:
create top of the line devices to be used by the consumer, include top quality
Internet services as part of their offerings, provide enterprise solutions,
build scale in networks, and expand their line of professional services. Their strategies for providing all of this-by
prioritizing and investing in brand and design and commitment to the
customer.

The fact is Nokia top priorities are to be the
number one provider of customer service and products. They don’t just want to sell the most cell
phones or provide the most service, they want to make certain the consumers are
happy with what they are receiving and they want return customers. They understand that in order to design the
best-of-the-best, they need to understand what the consumer wants from a
product or service. While they did have
a small downfall in 2004 in following the direction they had set for
themselves, they are back in line to provide the consumer the best possible
experiences in today’s technology.

In order to become the number one provider to the
consumer, approximately 36 percent of Nokia’s workforce is in Research and
Development, where they have centers located in 11 different countries and
employ over 20,000 people. Their
Research Centers are responsible for the increasing technological advances in
the industry but also for adapting to changes in market trends and responding
with knowledge and innovation.

Second in line to Nokia is Motorola. Working Mother magazine has just announced
this month that the company made the 2006 Working Mother 100 Best Company
list. This means a lot to those all over
the world and you’ll find that Motorola employees are happily trying to beat
out Nokia’s number one position. They,
too, have prioritized and are working diligently to beat out all their
competitors in offering top quality products and services. Whether its Bluetooth products, home
networking, dispatching products, or virtual private networks, Motorola will
have it, as they are known for their vast array of services in the United
States and many other countries.

Motorola has just come out with several new
products, including the Motorola SLVR.
This sleek designed cell phone has many features that consumers demand
and they are top quality. The Motorola
SLVR is able to store music tracks and has Bluetooth technology. Again, however, Nokia has outdone Motorola
with the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic. Not
only does the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic allow for more music to be downloaded, it
has several more advanced features and capabilities than the Motorola
SLVR. Consumers know this but all it
will take is one slip up for Nokia to lose its place.

So what will it take for someone, such as Motorola
to take over the number one position in cell phone technology? The most important thing that Nokia can do is
stay on top of the market trends and listen to what features the consumer
wants. Without their top-quality
Research and Development, they will not be able to stay where they are and they
must continue to excel in this area.
Motorola, in fact, could easily overtake their position if Nokia makes
another mistake like they did in 2004.

Nokia 5300 – Music to Your Ears

Last Updated: 2011/10/02

In 2006, the cell phone rage included more than the
telephone-with-little-more style of just five years earlier. Not only are
phones of 2006 full of great looks, they are packed with musical features to
make them more like Walkman’s than a way to phone home.

The Nokia N91 has everything except the kitchen sink, much more
than most users would ever need. Nokia answered the call of the casual user
that wanted integrated music features without being able to beam satalites in
space when they introduced the 5300 Xpress Music phone.

When you first set your eyes upon the Nokia 5300, you won’t
necessarily say “WOW!” The outer design is a little more boxy and
bulky than the average top-of-the-line mobile phone. The 5300 measures 3.6 by
1.9 by 0.8 inches thick, but it is lighter than it looks, weighing in at just
over 3.5 ounces.

While the closed device is not terribly remarkable, try to open
up the little gem and you’ll find it’s not the clamshell design of last year.
This is a slider phone, one of the first put out by Nokia, though you wouldn’t
know it when you feel the ease of the slide. You won’t get that
baby-in-your-hand cradle feel of the clamshell but that’s the nature of a
slider phone.

The display is a full 2 inches and supports over 250K colors.
Graphics and texts pop off the 320 x 240 pixel screen. You can adjust the font
size and backlight time, though you can’t adjust the brightness. Not to worry,
the screen is plenty bright in the dark and shaded areas outside. Nokia took
advantage of the color perfection with their eye catching, but not gaudy,
menus.

Speaking of menus, Nokia really got it right on this phone. They
provided clear, concise descriptions of new applications users of yesteryear
aren’t familiar with when you place the cursor over the menu icon.

The navigation controls are covered in a rubber film that
provides some traction for fingertips. There is a five-way button that makes
navigating the menus a breeze in addition to providing a shortcut to any four
functions you program. Additional shortcuts are available on the standby
screen, too. The two familiar soft keys are programmable and the standard Talk
and End buttons are in the same place as other Nokia phones.

Looks aren’t everything, however, and at some point you’ll
probably do much more than stare at your new mobile phone. This is where this
cell really shines. To the left of the display are dedicated music buttons for
playing your favorite tunes. You’ll pause, play, fast-forward and rewind your
tracks effortlessly. Adjust the volume with the dedicated rocker on the right
side of the phone.

The music player is far superior to other mid-range priced
devices. The stereo Bluetooth makes for easy music file transfer from computer
to phone. The speakers are much better than other Nokia models and most other
music phones. Support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, and WMA files are all included.

While you’re playing music tracks, the display will present to
you the name of the song, artist, album and song length. It will additionally
show you how to use the musical navigation buttons that are along the side of
the screen. Play modes include shuffle and repeat. If you like to personalize your
listening experience, you’ll love the Nokia 5300. The equalizer has five preset
modes and two that are customizable. You can effortlessly save your tracks to
ringtones as well.

Sound quality is second to none. The speakers will please you at
any volume level. The headphone volume is just as clear and crisp as your home
stereo.

More than a phone and a music device, the 5300 has a lot of
additional applications to offer. The phone book is large capacity, allowing
for up to one thousand contacts, complete with information like email
addresses, web URLs, up to five numbers each, birth date, company, job title,
notes and address. The SIM card is capable of storing an additional 250
contacts. Organize contacts by groups or add a photo to the caller ID so you
can keep everyone straight. You can also assign a ringtone to each and every
contact or a group.

The text and multimedia messaging
features meet and exceed the expectations of most users. With T9 data
recognition, this Nokia will complete your words for you. Other integrated
standard features included in this phone are the timer, alarm clock, calendar,
to-do list, notepad and calculator.

If you need even more space for music, photos or contacts, the
SD card will expand your storage by 2 GB. Nokia didn’t consider that some users
would be swapping SD cards, apparently, because it’s located beneath the
battery. If you don’t take your cards in and out often, you won’t find this to
be problematic. If you are change cards often, though, you might want to keep a
thin screwdriver handy.

I can’t tell you about the Nokia 5300 without spending a few
words on the Bluetooth feature. The infrared port is convienantly located on
the side of the phone, making synching simple. Check and send email, surf the
net and download tunes whenever you like.

Snapping pictures with the camera feature won’t leave you
disappointed. The 1.3 megapixels will capture shots in one of six resolutions.
Ranging from 1290 x 960 to 160 x 120, you’ll find the jpg pictures will be
crisp and colorful. There are three camera modes, color effects, the ability to
add notes to the pictures, a 10-second timer, sequence shooting for taking
three pictures in rapid-fire, an 8x digital zoom and the ability to adjust
contrast. You can’t adjust the brightness and there is no flash but those are
the only real places this camera comes up short.

Shoot video in 3GPP in one of two resolutions – 176 x 144 or 129
x 96. The quality is nothing worth writing home about but is pretty standard
for a 1.3 megapixel camera.

With
the price tag hovering around $300 when it was released in early 2006, this
phone is music to your ears without blowing out your wallet.

Title Your Short Story Right

Last Updated: 2011/10/01

No matter how fantastic the short story you have written may be, without a catchy title the chances are good that an editor will not read it. The title is the most important part of the story as this is what first captures the reader’s attention.

A good title should grab the reader and make them wonder what the story is about. A bad title will probably cause the reader to skip the story altogether. This holds true when submitting your stories for publication. Editors are busy people and will pass on the story, often without reading the first sentence, if your title doesn’t capture their interest.

The title of your story will tell the editor a lot about your creativity. If your title is strong, an editor will be more likely to look at your story with a positive attitude.

So how do you come up with a good title? Below is a small list of tips to help you come up with an attention grabbing title.

1. Keep it short, no more than four or five words. Even two or three word titles are generally more than enough. If you can come up with a single word that conveys something about your story, even better.

2. Avoid boring titles. Don’t name your story something like ‘The Monster’ or ‘The Sea’ as these are dull and boring, and too generalized. Instead, try for something that evokes emotion. ‘Under the Bed’ would be a good title for a scary story and ‘High Tides’ works better for a story based on the ocean.

3. Make sure your title fits your genre. Don’t name a whodunit with a title that could be confused with a romance story.

4. Make your title easy to remember. This is another reason to keep the title short. Use your creativity to come up with something catchy that relates to the theme, the action, or the characters of the story. A memorable title allows your readers to recommend your story to others.

5. Research the title you come up with. Although titles are not copyrighted, you don’t want your story confused with another story of the same name. They can be similar without being exact.

So how do you spark your creativity to come up with the perfect title for your story? The following are a handful of ways to awaken your muse.

a. A short line of dialogue or a memorable sentence from your story can sometimes be the right choice.

b. A common phrase or expression can often be found that sums up the theme of your story. Or use a play on words, where only one element of the phrase is changed.

c. Borrow a line from an established work. Look at Shakespeare, the Bible or other well known book, song or movie.

d. Use one your main characters’ names. Think along the lines of ‘Tom Sawyer’ or Stephen King’s ‘Christine’.

e. Likewise, your title can be your setting. Think of Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Space, etc…

f. A good title can convey the main idea of your story. ‘Misery’ or ‘Legends of the Fall’ are good examples.

g. Use word association to link together elements of the story.

h. Allow the action to determine the name. By adding an ‘ing’ to the first word, you can come up with a catchy title. Some examples of this could be Chasing Rainbows or Dreaming Life Away.

Often, you can spend hours coming up with a title only to have the editor change it after accepting the story for publication. Sometimes the new title will make little sense to you. While you may think your title is perfect, the editor knows the publication’s readers well and may think the alternative is a better choice. And while this may irk your ego, knowing the story will be published is its own reward.

However you come up with the title to your short story, remember it is the first impression the editor will have about your writing abilities. Like the logline to a screenplay or the first paragraph of a novel, the title should represent the story they are about to read. At the end of the day, you want the editor to remember your story and place it in the ‘accepted for publication’ stack on their desk.
