Marketing The Gospel – Is It A Contradiction In Terms?

“If any man comes after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will find it.” (Mark 8:34)

‘Marketing the Gospel’ – is it a contradiction in terms? The concept sounds sort of self-defeating, like trying to get the church to run a protection racket or to set up a brothel as a form of Christian outreach. And at a glance, our Gospel text would suggest that, if there is such a thing as Gospel marketing, Jesus obviously didn’t know how to do it.

And yet, strictly speaking, we preachers are always doing marketing. Whenever we present a ‘product’ of any kind, we are marketing it, and that’s as true of our presentation of the Gospel as it is of any other product. It’s just a question of whether it’s good marketing or bad marketing.

What I mean is that you can never present anything in a neutral way. The way you dress, the way you speak, the way you present yourself to others, always shapes the way your message is perceived. If you preach the gospel in a way that is fiery and aggressive, that is going to affect the way your message is perceived by your audience. If you wear clerical robes that are colourful and symbolic, that is going to effect the way people hear you. If you try to remove yourself from the process completely by simply reading pieces of Scripture in a monotonous tone, that too is going to shape what your listeners hear.

There is no neutral ground. Every time you present anything by way of dialogue, written article or sermon, you package it in some way or other, and so you market it. Admittedly, some preachers package the gospel in such a way that the message seems to be more about the preacher than about Christ, but that just means that they are marketing their message badly (or marketing the wrong message). Either way, we can’t escape marketing. What we need is marketing that is appropriate for servants of the Lord Jesus. And there’s the rub.

The problem with most marketing, as I see it, is that it is judged solely in terms of its results. If lots of people buy your product as a result of your marketing, it is good marketing. Conversely, if only a few people buy it, you have marketed poorly. This is obviously is not sufficient for the Gospel marketer.

While it is tempting to assume that the sermon that leaves a goodly number of parishioners in tears is a good one, it may just be the result of clever emotional manipulation on the part of the preacher. Conversely, we may be quick to judge the sermon that has parishioners storming out during the service as a bad one, but isn’t that exactly the sort of response the Lord Jesus regularly received?

Now I know that we are taught to ‘know the tree by the fruits’, which means that good outcomes should indicate good marketing, but I’d suggest that we need to look for those fruits further down the track. Teary parishioners and large amounts of cash in the offertory are not necessarily the good fruits we need to look for. Changed lives that go the distance – now that’s fruit. Think again of the message of the Lord Jesus Himself. Over time, it turned human history upside-down, but in the short-term, the only obvious result was that He got Himself killed.

Let me cut to the chase here. The missing criterion by which good marketing ought to be judged is… truth! This is the ingredient that differentiates the marketing of Jesus and the Apostles from so many of their modern-day representatives.

Telling the truth, and marketing in a way that is true to the message – that’s what puts the Gospel into Gospel marketing.

Good Gospel marketing functions to make the Gospel clear, not necessarily attractive. It means communicating to people in a language that they can understand, but without importing the values that they are comfortable with.

Does this mean that we should disregard results as a means of judging our success? Undoubtedly the answer is ‘yes’ – at least in the short term. We must focus on faithfulness rather than results, and leave the long-term results up to God.

Does this mean that we should disregard all the obvious marketing mechanisms that appeal to the basic human appetites for sex, youth and beauty? Well, first and foremost we need to be true to the Gospel.

For the Christian faith does celebrate the ‘abundant life’, but it’s an abundant life that includes sacrifice, suffering and death, and these are difficult concepts to ‘sell’. And we do celebrate beauty, but if you can’t see the beauty in offering a cup of cold water to someone who is thirsty, well … you’re not ready to market the Gospel.

Curing Bad Cat Breath

Cat owners know for a fact that bad cat breath can be downright awful. It isn’t that much different from bad human breath, as both are caused by bacteria found in the mouth that breaks protein down and releases the sulfur compounds out into the air. Some bacteria that lead to tartar can be found in your cat’s diet. When you feed him, you should always make sure that the food he consumes doesn’t contain a lot of bacteria. If you shop healthy and feed him only healthy foods, it can help his bad breath a great deal. When you give your pet a treat, make sure that the treat is designed to help with tartar. After your cat has finished eating, you can brush his teeth or rinse his mouth out. This way, you’ll get the bacteria out of his mouth before it has time to build up on his teeth.

Sometimes, cats may have a bad odor in their mouth that doesn’t come from tartar or bad breath in general. In these rare cases, it can be either liver or kidney disease. If you notice bad breath and it isn’t tartar, you should take your cat to the vet. Even though it may be something to do with tartar, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Do Fish See Water?

Fish do not see the water they live in because that is all that they swim in. It has become an invisible part of their experience. It is not only in their environment but in themselves. Similarly, people who create limited thoughts, think that the world itself is filled with limitations.

How do limited thoughts create limited people?

Let us count the ways.

One: Reversed Use Of The Law of Attraction.

According to the Law of Attraction, you get what you think about most of the time. In other words, thoughts are things. And the more you think about things and the more you feel about them, the quicker you draw them into your experience.

The Law of Attraction is not an airy-fairy philosophy. You can find evidence for it.

In Quantum Mechanics. In Bell’s Theorem. In the traditions of many spiritual philosophies and ancient religions. But, above all, through trying it out and seeing the results for yourself. There is nothing irrational about this law. It is as solid and as irrefutable as gravity.

It works all the time. Those who do not know about it, use it by default. It is a perpetual source of their mis-creations. It seems to them that things are just flying at them, that things are always happening to them, and that they are innocent victims of other people and circumstances.

Many people actually know all about the Law of Attraction, but it still works against them. This is because they do not use it consciously. So, they continue to mis-create.

These people fall into two groups: one, the skeptics, who claim to have a rational predisposition; and two, those who forgot about it.

The skeptics dismiss it out of intellectual pride. They choose to dismiss it, not

because the theory is vague and there is no proof for it, but because they do not do any kind of research and experimentation with it. Even an elementary study of ancient spiritual literature, Jungian psychology, and the New Physics will show that the world we think of as common sense has some bizarre anomalies to it.

The forgetful dismiss it because they are overwhelmed by phenomena. They cry for a way to quench their thirst, while all along a glass of pure, clean water is sitting on the table before them. They yearn for the rich fruits of life while sitting in front of a banquet table.

If you fail to either acknowledge the Law of Attraction or fail to use it, for one reason or another, then you will continue to use it by default, bringing more and more of the things that you don’t want into your experience.

Two: Lack of Vision.

Those who think in limited ways, lack vision. They do not see the possibility and opportunity before them. They have learned how to filter out the good and focus on the bad.

Here is a real life example:

Thousands of people drive through the desert regions of the U.S.A. on a main highway. All they see is a lot of hot, dry, arid land.

One man, however, was driving through it, and he saw something different. He saw a man-made lake, shady trees, and a beautiful retirement village. He bought a parcel of land for a low price, after all, it was considered worthless, and transformed his inner vision into a wonderful housing complex. His vision transformed into reality made him wealthy.

Opportunity for self-betterment in every area of your life is available to you, but you have to notice it first before you can act. One way of failing to notice opportunity is to wear the blinders of limited thinking.

Three: Low Energy.

When you think limited thoughts, you tend to neglect good eating, exercising, and doing things that encourage your body to be in a state of optimum health and vitality. The result is low energy, and this, in turn, creates a highly unproductive way of living in the world.

Four: Birds of a Feather.

People who have limited thoughts do not like to mingle with those who have expansive thoughts. It irritates them. In turn, those who have an optimistic view of things, do not have the patience to spend time grumbling, gossiping, or playing the game of “Ain’t It Awful!” Limited people like to associate with others like them, who are open to their line of thought. This reinforces their tendency to think limited thoughts.

Five: Low Self-Esteem.

People who think limited thoughts have low self-esteem. This is because they have low energy, feel depressed, associate with people like themselves, lack vision, and are constantly baffled by how things just keep getting worse for them. They appear to have the Midas Touch in reverse. All of this results in low self-esteem. It’s really hard to feel like a winner when you’re losing all the time.

Wealth, health, romance, and success are possible when you step out of limited thinking and see the rich possibilities around you.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet – Who Says It’s Not a Beauty?

It was passion at best
view. I was sitting at my customary board at my customary chocolate browse a
pair of weeks backwards when my friend pulled away his original infant. It was
slick, it was tiny, it was distinct and I just stared. “It” was the
just-released Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC that he had picked upward that
afternoon. He noticed me staring, and being the tasty, sharing character of guy
that he is instantly offered to let me offer his original infant a swirl. Love
at best view may be an understatement.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X60
Tablet is the latest upgrade to Lenovo’s X series. Just 1. 1 inches dense, it’s
about the size of a spiral bounce notebook, but does then often much. And I’m
not the simply one to believe then. The X60 Tablet has garnered some amazing
reviews since it debuted in November. PC Magazine awarded it 4. 5 of 5 stars
and calls it “the eventual pill experience.
Independent reviewers at GottaBeMobile. com tell it “sets the measure
for redeemable pill PCs. And Laptop Magazine claims, “…it just may be the
better redeemable still. ” All I know is that it has just about everything I’d
seek in a redeemable pill PC, and so some. Here’s a peek at some of the
most-wanted features that the Lenovo X60 Tablet offers.

Footprint

At 10. 8” x 9. 6” x 1.
1-1. 3” (the extra. 2 inches comes into drama if you select the 8 cubicle
battery instead of the 4 cubicle battery. It too adds a wee piece to the weight),
the X60 Tablet is just about the size of a basic spiral notebook.

Multiple Screen
Options

You go a selection of
three cover options – 12. 1″ XGA, 12. 1″ SXGA+, or
MultiView/MultiTouch 12. 1″ XGA screens, all with Super Wide Viewing Angle

won’t tell it was JUST like sketching with a pencil or charcoal, but nothing
else still comes good. Laying downward the bones for a present took seconds and
was nearly as simple as sketching it away on newspaper. Oh! And did I cite the
cushioned finger grasp and eraser? Yes,
the digitizer pen has an eraser on the opposite conclusion of the hint where it
belongs and it truly works. And following that ‘less details’ thinking, Lenovo
has a warehousing bay for your digitizer and offers optional tethers to hold
your pen connected and forbid losing it.

Long Long Battery
Life

The Lenovo Thinkpad
Tablet offers you a selection of batteries. Go with the 8 cubicle, which will
offer you 8+ hours of battery procedure. Even the 4 cubicle battery
out-performs most others though. And you have a choice of ability savers that
will assist maintain battery accusation for the significant tasks.

Duo Processor

The large design in the
X60 Thinkpad Tablet is the Intel Low Voltage Core Duo mainframe. This is what
everyone has been waiting for, and they eventually did it. The Core Duo
mainframe supports upward to 4 GB RAM and a 120 GB HDD, runs tight and chill,
and gives you the ability of a desktop in a pill.

The Cons The unmarried
biggest con is that the X60 Tablet doesn’t include a built in optical effort.

X6 Tablet UltraBase, which is tiny enough to transport anywhere, and gives you
an entire reality of enlargement options

The Dell Inspiron 1000

The following article

covers a topic that has recently moved to center stage–at least it seems that

way. If you’ve been thinking you need to know more about it, here’s your

opportunity.

The Dell Inspiron 1000 Notebook

is one of the most basic, yet readily capable machines to grace the computer

market in quite some time. Though many

now find the unit obsolete, the 1000 is still a fully-functional piece of

equipment that easily handles many tasks at once. One of the greatest features on the 1000 is

its ability to display images via its large display screen, which has great

pixel resolution of 1024 X 768, and does not let down the user where other

units might. The fifteen inch screen is

more than large enough to display much needed information, pictures, or game

screens, all of which are common functions that can be easily orchestrated by

the Dell Inspiron 1000. The graphics

processor also helps with the computer’s ability to handle more superficial

tasks. The notebook uses the AGP SIS

M650, which is an industry standard for many computing units, and works well

with computers that have shared video memory, like the 1000.

One of the computer’s

downsides is the sound quality that initially comes out of the 1000. The sound is not bad, but it certainly isn’t

at the premium level that most notebooks tend to achieve these days. Another downside of the sound quality is the

computer’s incessant “bump” sounds, a problem that occurs every so often,

especially when listening to music. The

sound does get better when the unit is hooked up to external speakers, so do

not rely on the built-in stereo speakers, which do not do their job. External speakers sound much better, but the

“bump” noises can still be heard through them, which can be utterly

annoying. Another problem with the sound

is hearing what sounds like a sound file peaking, when in actuality the speaker

is producing a noise it cannot handle, and therefore produces a distorted sound

that is not the fault of the sound file itself, but more the fault of the

computer’s faulty speakers.

Overall, the computer

seems to handle at a pretty impressive rate.

The computer does seem to handle everyday tasks in a very simple manner,

but that does not designate it to have an adequate system. Most computers do not truly go through

processing and memory tests until their systems have been tried by thorough

software and hardware installations, which can wreak havoc on an underperforming

unit. Sadly, this computer can only

handle a few of these installations, and usually cannot handle having one

outside computer game installed into its system. Even with the individual game the system

seems to falter. There are other

programs on the computer, but they are purely operational beings, which should

not affect the user’s recreational experience, and especially should not

negatively impact the computer’s need to have many programs going at once, but

they do. The Dell Ispiron 1000 Notebook

is not meant for fun and games of any large magnitude. The notebook can fare very well with minimal

software downloads, but does not seem to be keen on operating with large

installations, which puts this computer at a very big disadvantage in today’s

industry.

How can you put a limit

on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom

that changes everything.

Although the sound does

lack, and the performance of many tasks by this notebook is nearly impossible,

there are some functions that still operate properly, and can be advantageous

to the owner of the 1000. The notebook

comes with a fully-functional CD-ROM drive, which also plays DVDs, and has a

CD-R burner, which is a necessity in today’s world, of modern downloads. DVD viewing is quite pleasurable, especially

due to the notebook’s large screen, and though the sound does often fail during

parts of the viewing experience, the visuals do tend to make up for the initial

downfalls experienced by the user. The

burning experience is an overall plus for the user, as there have been no major

problems found with the burning hardware inherent to the computer, but the main

obstacle is finding a program that adequately burns albums and files without

causing major interference to the user.

Compact disc listening is also quite pleasurable, but must be done

through headphones if one wants the true quality experience of listening to

music. The discs rarely skip, and the

computer seems to handle the task quite easily, though it does get a bit warm

after completing such a menial duty.

One of the biggest

problems that users of the Dell Inspiron 1000 Notebook will notice is the lack

of battery power, and the computer’s basic inability to fully charge when

plugged in, which usually gives the user a maximum battery time of twenty

minutes, which is plain dismal in today’s world of advanced technology. Energy is one of the big factors to consider

when purchasing a laptop unit, and anyone concerned with that area of the 1000

should prepare for a rather large letdown.

The computer is only half the problem, as the battery packs that are

internally stored in the computers tend to give the consumer a large headache

as well. Many of the units were recalled

due to the battery’s apparent ability to combust, a negative quality which has

caused many fires on an international level.

The battery’s lack of real power, along with the combustibility factor,

is one of the biggest reasons that many people will go with another unit when

looking for a dependable laptop computer.

Finally, there is the

connectivity of the Dell Inspiron 1000.

For the most part, the computer does seem to function quite well on the

internet, and has the ability to hookup to many of the high speed services

available, without the need of even purchasing a network card, which can easily

fit into the computer’s accessible port.

The only problem can be the failure of the Ethernet port, which then

institutes reparation of the problem, or a need to install a network card, both

of which can be irritating and costly processes. The computer also has the ability to connect

with USB ports, which is a very vital need in the present time, especially since

• Select both or appropriate option from Structure and Windows and assign the password.

How to overcome record locking in SQL Server in case of concurrent access of data

In Most of multi-user ASP.NET application problem arises when two users are trying to access same data. For an example, if User A is modifying data and at the same time user B is trying to read data. Here we can’t be not say sure that whether user B gets the old original data or newly updated data. There are two options way to overcome this problem

1. By using Record locking (Pessimistic Concurrency)

2. Compare with original data (Optimistic Concurrency)

1. Pessimistic Concurrency: In pessimistic Concurrency when user A intendshas a chance to edit record, an application l will lock that record and does notn’t allow any one to usetouch it until user A complete his changes and save it. So we give guarantee that no user can read/update data while user A is editing the data. In pessimistic concurrency, user has to wait till record is locked by other user. One way to achieve this is : Put isLocked field with each record. Now when user A opens the record for editing, the field isLocked is set to true mode and after saving record set it to false mode. But problem arises when if user A opens record to view theit contents and closes the browser before saving it e record it to database. Now this record will consider as locked. To solve this problem we have to add one more field Timestamp with each record. Timestamp field define expiration time of record and user must edit the record within expiry ofiration time limit. Alternatively, we require two fields flag AND a timestamp.The flag indicates the lock state, and the time is the expiryation time.Then create one SQL job that runs and checks the expiryation times and automatically unlocks records that will showare past time of expiryexpiration.

2. Optimistic Concurrency: Here no locking concept is used. Anyone can read and modify the record at anytime and you don’t give chance to anyone towill take your chances that the record is not modify the recordsmodified by someone else before you takehave the a chance to modify and save it. The one solution is not to lock the record but keep a snapshot of the value that is editable and when the user submits it will compare the old snapshot with what is in the existing record and if it does not match, the new record would not be saved and send an alert to the user that the data is old and needs to be refreshed for them to submit their work Here the problem arises when there are more fields exist in record .Sso we need to compare all fields with their original value. This is very time consuming process. So to overcome this problem we add one Timestamp field with each record. The value of timestamp field will be modified everytime a change is made to a record that contains such a field. Now compare timestamp value with original timestamp value if both are same then we can say that now changes made with the record else send and alert message to the user that the data is old and needs to be refreshed for them to submit their work In Optimistic concurrency user doesn’t require to wait to do their changes so it provide better performance compared to with pessimistic concurrency. Suggestion: If you are not concerned with the performance then use pessimistic concurrency else use optimistic concurrency to overcome problems of concurrent access of data.

Introduction

In the present era of Knowledge based computer applications, there is often a need to store a large amount of text based data into the Database. Moreover, the user also needs facility to search this text for specific key-words. There are several ways to provide search functionality.

If the Oracle database is used in the application, then such massive text data can be stored into Oracle database as CLOB (Character Large Object) data type. Oracle 10g supports storing of character data up to 4 GB in CLOB.

Oracle Text provides a powerful text search and text management for Oracle 10g database. Oracle Text indexes the text content for fast & accurate retrieval of information.

Usage

Let me now illustrate how to use Oracle Text for searching in CLOB data into Oracle 10g database.

There is a table in the database which is having a large text content stored as CLOB.

Oracle Text requires an index to be created ion the field which is to be searched for. So, create an index named Content_Tbl_Index as :

Now, user can search for all content with multiple combinations of Keywords and operators, for example:

SELECT Content_Desc FROM Content_Tbl

WHERE CONTAINS (Text_Content, ‘%OUT SOURCING%’ OR ‘%SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT%’ OR ‘%WEB SITE%’ ) >0;

This query will return all the rows from the database with the column TEXT_CONTENT containing any of the key words ‘Out Sourcing’, ‘Software Development’, ‘Web Site’.

Concerns

While using the Oracle Text search features, I have observed that the following points are to be kept in mind for getting proper search results:

1. The keyword as well as join operators are to be provided in Upper case.

2. The keyword should be pre-fixed and suffixed by a % sign.

3. Whenever the content is changed or updated, the index does not updated automatically. It follows the ing line which needs to be executed after each “Save” process to update the index.

Record Locking in SQL Server

Pessimistic and Optimistic Concurrency

In a multi-user environment, there are two models for updating data in a database: optimistic concurrency and pessimistic concurrency.

Pessimistic concurrency involves locking the data at the database when you read it. You essentially lock the database record and don’t allow anyone to touch it until you are done modifying and saving it back to the database. Here you have 100% assurance that nobody will modify the record and while you check it have it checked out, out. aAnother person will have to wait until you have made the your changes.

By default, SQL Server controls lock escalation, but you can control it yourself by using lock optimizer hints. Here are some lock escalation hints you may want to consider:

· ROWLOCK This hint guides tells SQL Server to use row-level locking instead of page locks for INSERTS. By default, SQL Server may perform as a page-level lock instead of a less intrusive row-level lock when inserting data. By using this hint, you can guide tell SQL Server to always start out using row-level locking. But, this hint does not prevent lock escalation if the number of locks exceeds SQL Server’s lock threshold.

· SERIALIZABLE (equivalent to HOLDLOCK) applies only to the table specified and only for the duration of the transaction, and it will hold a shared lock for this duration instead of releasing it as soon as the required table, data page, row or data is no longer required.

· TABLOCK specifies that a table lock to be used instead of a page or row level lock. This lock will be remained held until the end of the statement.

· TABLOCKX specifies that an exclusive lock will be applied held on the table until the end of the statement or transaction, and will prevent others from reading or updating the table.

· UPDLOCK specifies that update locks will be used instead of shared locks, and will hold the locks until the end of the statement or transaction.

· XLOCK specifies that an exclusive lock be used and kept activated held until the end of the end of the transaction on all data being processed by the statement. The granularity of XLOCK will be adjusted if it is used with the PAGLOCK or TABLOCK hints.

SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 2000 Lock Escalation Options

You can override how SQL Server performs locking on a table by using the SP_INDEXOPTION command. Below is an example of code you can run to guide tell SQL Server to use page locking, not row locks, for a specific table:

When FALSE, page locks are not used. Access to the specified indexes is obtained using row- and table-level locks only.

When these commands are used, they affect all queries that eaffect these indexes. This command should not be used unless you know, positively, that they always produce the results you desire.

The SQL Server query optimizer automatically makes the correct determination. It is recommended that you do not override the choices the optimizer makes. Disallowing a locking level can affect the concurrency for a table or index adversely. For example, specifying only table-level locks on a large table accessed heavily by many users can affect performance significantly. Users must wait for the table-level lock to be released before accessing the table.

Optimistic concurrency means you read the database record, but don’t lock it. Anyone can read and modify the record at anytime and you will take your chances that the record is not modified by someone else before you have a chance to modify and save it. As a developer, the burden is on you to check for changes in the original data (collisions) and act accordingly based on any errors that may occur during the updating e process..

With optimistic concurrency, the application has to check for changes to the original record to avoid overwriting changes. There is no guarantee that the original record has not been changed, because no lock has been placed on that data at its source – the database. Hence, there is the real possibility of losing changes made by another person.

Optimistic Concurrency Strategies

If you are in a performance state-of-mind, there are chances of your chosingchances are you will go with optimistic concurrency. Optimistic concurrency frees up database resources as quickly as possible so that other users and processes can act upon that data as soon as possible.

There are four popular strategies to deal ing with optimistic concurrency:

1. Do Nothing.

2. Check for changes to all fields during update.

3. Check for changes tof modified fields during update.

4. Check for changes to timestamp (row version) during update.

All of these strategies have to deal with the shaping of the Update T-SQL Command sent to the database during the updating of the data. The examples below are not very detailed on purpose and assume a basic understanding of ADO.NET.

Optimistic Concurrency on Update Strategy #1 – Do Nothing

The simplest strategy for dealing with concurrency issues during the updating of data is to do nothing.

The update command will not check for any changes in the data, only specify the primary key of the record to be changed. If someone else changed the data, those changes will more than likely be overwritten:

One would hope that this means either 1) the application is a single-user application, or 2) the chance of multi-user update collisions is very unlikely and the repercussions of overwriting data is negligible.

Optimistic Concurrency on Update Strategy #2 – Check All Fields

With this strategy, the update command will check that all fields in the row (usually minus BLOB fields) are equal to their original values when performing the update to assure no changes have been made to the original record. A check of the return value of the ExecuteNonQuery Command will indicatetell you if the update actually took place. The return value of the ExecuteNonQuery Command is typically the number of rows affected by the query.

Update Product

This is essentially what CommandBuilder creates when using DataSets and is a strategy that doesn’t want to see any changes to the data.

Optimistic Concurrency on Update Strategy #3 – Check Only Changed Fields

Rather than checking all fields in the row to make sure they match their original value, this strategy checks only those fields whichthat are being updated in the command.

Update Product

ID = @ID

AND

Name = @OriginalName

This strategy only cares that it is not overwriting any data and could care less thant other fields in the record may have been changed. This could create an interesting combination of data in the row.

Optimistic Concurrency on Update Strategy #4 – Implement Timestamp

SQL Server has a timestamp ( alias rowversion ) field that is modified every time a change is made to a record that contains such a field. Therefore, if you add such a field to a table you only have to verify the timestamp record contains the same original value to be assured none of the fields have been changed in the record.

Update Product

Set

Name = @Name

Where

ID = @ID

AND

TimestampID = @TimestampID

This is the same as Strategy #2 above without the need for checking all fields.

Optimistic concurrency has a performance component to it that suggests a higher performing ASP.NET website.

There are other methods of achieving optimistic concurrency, but I think the ones above are the most popular. A developer needs to look at the application itself to determine which strategy makes sense. The DataSet, Command Builder, and DataAdapter typically handle this stuff for you using Strategy #2. However, if you work with objects instead of DataSets, you need to handle concurrency issues yourself.
