Suffer Consequences if You Let Health Insurance Laps

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

If you are between jobs and you are considering not paying for COBRA health insurance benefits, you may need to look at alternative interim insurance coverage. COBRA is the law that allows employees to keep their health insurance coverage for 18 months once they leave their job by paying expensive premiums. While COBRA may not be your best option for health insurance, Less expensive medical plans may be an important and necessary expense.

All new health insurance plans are allowed to force new subscribers to suffer a 12 month waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Fortunately there is another law that allows for portability of coverage without having to suffer pre-existing condition waiting periods. That law says that if you have had CONTINUOUS COVERAGE for the 12 months prior to and leading up to the beginning of the new insurance coverage, you will be given credit toward any new pre-existing condition waiting period. If you had 6 months of continuous health insurance coverage prior to taking out your new policy, 6 months would be applied to the 12 month waiting period and bring the new pre-existing condition waiting period down to 6 months. If you had 12 months of continuous coverage, you will not have any waiting period for a pre-existing condition on the new health insurance plan.

CONTINUOUS COVERAGE is defined as continuous health insurance coverage with no lapse of more than 62 days. If you go more than 62 days without coverage, you may have to suffer the full waiting period for pre-existing conditions. For example, if you were taking High Blood Pressure medication, you may have to wait 12 months after starting and paying for the new insurance before the insurance would cover the High Blood Pressure medication.

COBRA might be too expensive for you. However you can get a high deductible individual plan that will satisfy the continuous coverage requirements at a much lower cost. Some short-term insurance plans do not meet the requirements to satisfy the portability law. Speak with a health insurance agent like those at http://www.thackeragency.com to make sure you maintain continuous insurance coverage at an affordable price. Tell the agent your particular situation and they’ll be glad to put you in the best insurance product for you.

E-Commerce – 10 Steps to Success

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

There have been plenty of promises made to small businesses about how e-Commerce can transform a poor business into a thriving success through simple technology. Let me say from the outset, e-commerce must be thought of as an extension to existing business models. What do I mean? Well, if you have a solid business model prior to expanding online, there is a good chance that your business will prosper through e-commerce. If your fundamental business model is flawed, then going online will only compound the problem. OK that said, this article will deal with the latter scenario, i.e. you have a strong business model and are looking to propel your business to new heights and profit levels. So what are the secrets to succeeding at business online?
1. Don’t reinvent the wheel – How often have you heard that saying? There is good reason why the phrase has become a cliché. One thing you can be sure of is that you are not the first person to venture online, so don’t make the same mistakes as others. In particular, I am talking about paying too much money for someone to build you a shopping cart (required for online transactions). Purchase an off-the-shelf shopping cart that is open-source, i.e. the code is free to modify. That way, you can customize the cart to meet your exact requirements at a fraction of the cost to build one from scratch.
I have seen it too many times, companies will outlay 10’s of thousands of dollars to design a shopping cart which in the end may meet their exact requirements, but suffers from serious security flaws. Additionally, ask yourself the question; how long will it take me to make those 30 thousand dollars back?
2. Pay extra for a quality design – Some people are going to argue this one, but let me explain. Put yourself in the position of a consumer; you visit a website and it looks a little dodgy, are you prepared to submit your credit card details? Making a purchase online is all about confidence, a customer must feel assured that you are a reputable company, and the best way to project that image is through a quality designed web site.
3. Set up a real-time payment gateway – do not even think about accepting credit card payments online unless you have a secure merchant gateway to a bank. With the threat of hackers ever so prevalent on the web, you should NEVER store any credit card details. Let me repeat this point – NEVER STORE CREDIT CARD DETAILS, the risk is just too great. Besides, the benefit of real time payment gateways is that you will receive your money straight away, and more people will be willing to purchase online if you have the facility to charge their card at point of purchase.
4. It’s not all about price – Don’t fall into the trap so many businesses make when going online. Keep prices competitive, but concentrate on the value-added products and services. For example, offer next business day delivery; most people who shop online are strapped for time. Nothing impresses busy people more than having their goods delivered fast. Also, why not throw in some complimentary items? You’d be surprised how much people appreciate a gift with purchase, even if it is just a chocolate mint.
5. Keep them informed – A quality newsletter keeps your business fresh in the minds of your customers, but don’t overdo it. The key is to send out newsletters only when you have something important to say or offer your customers. Nothing annoys people more than receiving newsletters every week.
6. Viral marketing is the key – This should be your PRIMARY marketing objective. People often spend thousands of dollars trying to promote their business through online advertising campaigns but forget the most important facet of a good marketing plan – the customer. You will receive more business through word of mouth than any other advertising medium. You must get people talking about your business (in a positive light).
7. Employ affiliates to promote your website – This is especially important when trying to promote online shops, because most e-commerce websites are dynamic. I.e. they are database driven. Why? Well it comes down to how search engines index your web site. Despite modern techniques, Google, Yahoo and other search engines have difficulties adding dynamic web pages to their index. Hence, getting found on the web can be very hard. A good affiliate can direct traffic to your website for a small commission should a sale be made.
8. Keep inventory levels to a minimum – This applies not only to online business, but to bricks and mortar operations also. Excess inventory ties up cash and reduces business efficiency. The trick is to improve your supply chain so that inventory can be replenished fast from suppliers. There is always a trade off between offering your customers everything and not making them wait for out of stock items. If in doubt, stock up on your main sellers and have a clause about availability of low selling items (keep in mind point 4 above –re: fast delivery).
9. Provide customer testimonials – OK, there is a golden rule about testimonials – don’t fake it!! Nothing turns customers off quicker than hearing how you are the best thing since sliced bread. Keep it REAL – only post testimonials which are believable.
10. Don’t wait! – Seriously, this is paramount. The internet is evolving at a rapid pace, most businesses realise that getting a web presence is essential, fewer realise that the window of opportunity is decreasing fast. I have seen it firsthand, those businesses that were making huge profit margins a few years ago, are beginning to see the market flatten out with increased competition. There is still the potential to make a LOT of money through e-commerce, but the time to act is now.
There you have it, my 10 secrets to success; I cannot guarantee you will make a fortune if you follow the above principles, but I do guarantee you will be better off than someone that doesn’t.

Introduction To Forex Trading

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

There are many markets: markets for stocks, futures, options and currencies. These are probably the most accessible markets for everyday traders like you and I. People easily understand the basics of trading shares. I began trading shares first and then I moved on to trading currencies.

If you do not know a lot about currency trading, allow me to introduce it to you. It is what I trade and I believe that it is one of the best markets to trade because of its efficiency. The transaction costs to execute a trade are minimal and most brokers provide you with the tools and data you need to make your trading decisions, they usually provide them for free. The market is open 24 hours a day which allows you to design your trading hours around your daily commitments. It is very volatile, which is great for those people who are looking for day-trading opportunities.

The foreign exchange market is the market in which currencies are bought and sold against one another. People may loosely refer to this market under different labels, including foreign exchange market, forex market, fx market or the currency market.

The foreign exchange market is the largest market in the world, with daily trading volumes in excess of $1.5 trillion US dollars. All transactions involving international trade and investment must go through this market because these transactions involve the exchange of currencies.

It is the most perfect market that exists because it has a large number of buyers and sellers all selling the same products. There is a free flow of information and there are little barriers to participate.

The currency exchange market is an over-the-counter (OTC) market which means that there is not one specific location where buyers and sellers can actually meet to exchange currencies. Instead, transactions are conducted by phone, fax, e-mail or through the websites of brokers who specialize in currency trading.

The major dealing centres at the time of writing are: London , with about 30% of the market, New York , with 20%, Tokyo , with 12%, Zurich , Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Singapore , with about 7% each, followed by Paris and Sydney with 3% each. Because of the fact that these centres are all over the world, foreign exchange traders can execute transactions 24 hours a day. The market only closes on the weekends.

THE MAIN ‘PLAYERS’ IN THE FOREX MARKET

The five broad categories of participants are: consumers, businesses, investors, speculators, commercial banks, investment banks and central banks.

Consumers, including visitors of countries, tourists and immigrants, do need to exchange currencies when they travel so that they can buy local goods and services. These participants do not have the power to set prices. They just buy and sell according to the prevailing exchange rate. They make up a significant proportion of the volume being traded in the market.

Businesses that import and export goods and services need to exchange currencies to receive or make payments for goods they may have bought or services they may have rendered.

Investors and speculators require currencies to buy and sell investment instruments such as shares, bonds, bank deposits or real estate.

Large commercial and investment banks are the ‘price makers’. They are the ones who buy and sell currencies at the bid-and-offer exchange rates that they declare through their foreign exchange dealers.

Commercial banks deal with customers on one hand, and with the Interbank or other banks, on the other hand. They profit by utilizing the bid-and-offer spread. The bid price is the exchange rate that the buyer is willing to buy and the offer price is the exchange rate at which the seller is willing to sell. The difference is called the bid-offer spread. They also make profits from speculating about whether the exchange rate will rise or fall.

Central banks participate in the foreign exchange market in their effective duty as banks for their particular government. They trade currencies not for the intention of making profits but rather to facilitate government monetary policies and to help smoothen out the fluctuation of the value of their economy’s currency.

WHAT CURRENCIES TO TRADE IN THE FOREX MARKET

You can trade any country’s currency by exchanging it to another country’s currency, however the list below are the ones that are the most popular and are usually made available by most online brokers for you to trade.

Chaos, Children, and Chores

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Of course we all love our children dearly, but who knew they’d be so messy? When you have children, you can never count on how long your house will actually stay clean after you’ve cleaned it. A day? An hour? Less? Cleaning up after your kids does not have to take on a life of its own. By making a clean and organized home a priority for the entire family and by setting and sticking to household standards, you can avoid feeling more like Maid than Mom.

Ages of Your Children

Household chores are not just for older children. Children as young as two can learn to be organized. Toddlers can learn to put away their toys, brush the dog, put their dirty clothes in the hamper and help to unload groceries.

Older children need regular household chores. Studies have shown that children who have chores at home get better grades, are more social and more confident than children who do not have chores. Children need a certain amount of responsibility and need to learn to be accountable for their actions. Requiring your children to do household chores will help them to be more well rounded (and organized!) as they grow. Older children can make their beds, keep their room organized and clean, dust and vacuum, wash dishes, feed pets, and water plants.

Rewarding Efforts

Always thank your children when they’ve completed a chore and praise them for doing it and doing it well (when deserved).

The traditional chore chart on the fridge is a great parenting tool for positive reinforcement. Reward your children with stickers on the chore chart next to the chore they’ve completed. When they get X number of stickers, they get a reward – a new book or toy, their favorite dinner, a trip to the movies, etc. The chore chart system can be tweaked and customized for your family to suit each child in the house.

Your older children may be more apt to take their chores seriously if there are dollar signs involved. Base your children’s allowance on what you can afford, how many chores your children do and how well they do them. For instance, you can pay according to age (so an 8 year old would receive $8 per week). Or come up with a pricing system that works for you. Luckily, my 3 year old is quite happy with stickers, and my 8 year old is thrilled with Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

Flexibility – Make it Fun!

When it’s possible, allow your child to choose chores that they like to do. Their response will be better because they will enjoy what they’re doing. My three-year old loves to dust. I let her turn her music up a bit, hand her a damp rag and she goes to town. It’s a different story when it comes time for her to clear the table after dinner though. That’s like pulling teeth – without pain killers!

Do your children fight over who does which chores? Rotate chores from week to week so that your child isn’t stuck doing something he/she hates every week. (This week Susie dusts and Johnny takes out the trash. Next week it’s Susie’s turn to take out the trash and Johnny’s turn to dust.)

Try not to base household chores on gender. There’s nothing wrong with your son having to wash dishes or do laundry and there’s nothing wrong with your daughter taking out the trash or washing the car. No housework is strictly for girls or strictly for boys. Send your son off to college with the ability to do his own laundry, and your daughter with the confidence that she can haul out a ladder to change a light bulb.

If rotating chores doesn’t work to stop bickering, try writing the chores down on little pieces of paper and having your children pick their chores from a hat each week.

If your children don’t have chores, it’s not too late to start. Hold a family meeting and explain that you need help to maintain the house and that effective immediately everyone is going to start pitching in. Introduce chore charts and allowance/reward systems and explain to each child which chores they’ll be responsible for, when each chore needs to be completed and if necessary, how to do it.

Be sure to have consequences ready for chores that aren’t done and explain them in advance. In our house, if one chore is neglected or refused, it’s a done deal – no allowance, no negotiations. It may take a few weeks to get your family in full swing, but it will come together – I promise.

You are Mom, not Maid. You can ask for help and get it! Your children may not thank you for it now, but later on it will pay off for them – and for you! Make housework a part of your children’s routine and make yourself less stressed. Sit down and supervise for awhile …you knew you had kids for a reason.

Improving Website Performance

Images, graphic and flash animation ……..

Many sites have images or graphics that are too large. By too large, I don’t necessarily mean the dimensions of the images, but the file size is excessive and doesn’t load quickly in a web browser. There are no hard and fast rules about file sizes but if the website doesn’t load in a few seconds most visitors will move on to a different website. Have a qualified web designer check out the website and make sure there isn’t an abundance of large images that may slow down your website. You can reduce image size by reducing the quality, for instance with Jogs even a compressed image will still display fine for the web.

Another issue is flash animation. While animation can add a nice dimension to your website, it can slow down the speed of your website, and sometimes just become tiresome if over used. Once your visitors have seen the animation a few times they probably won’t want to wait each time while it plays again. Animation if used sparingly and with taste can enhance a website without bogging it down, but more and more websites that once had intro flash pages are removing them. Excessive us of Flash can also decrease your search engine rankings.

Web page code

Check your code and make sure that it is efficient and well written. If you have any comments in your code then take these out. Just reducing the code bloat of your site can save a few Kb each time your page is accessed – and given a site gets thousands of hits a day, that can save you a lot of money in bandwidth charges.

CSS and Caching

Having your web page style information in an external file can improve performance since CSS style sheets are cached the first time they are accessed. Therefore when a visitor goes to different pages on your site, any CSS style sheets that have already been accessed will remain in cache. CSS is also a great way to limit the amount of HTML code by separating code from content. Any style information can be declared in one place, but used throughout your web site.

Links

Make sure any links in your web pages are valid. So if you link to other web pages on external websites, make sure that the pages still exist. Occasionally page names change on external sites, which can cause links to become invalid. This is also a detriment as far as search engines. Search engines check for links and if there are bad link, they may penalize your site. Of course links to internal pages on your site should be valid as well. So if you add and remove web pages on your site, insure that any links to these pages remain accurate.

Hosting

If your website is still slow after cleaning up your HTML code, trimming back the size of your images, graphics and animation, you may want to evaluate the quality of your web host. I don’t recommend free hosting. You need reliability and accountability in regards to website hosting, and free hosting providers usually have servers that are overly taxed and lack the resources needed.

Design

Some websites are beautifully designed with lots of graphics, but if your visitors can’t quickly and easily navigate your site, what’s the point? Remember the goal of your website. Is it to sell a product or service, provide information, or is it to dazzle the visitor with animation and web design skills. I’ve found that most successful websites inform, provide an important message, or sell a product safely, securely and efficiently.

Overcoming Test Anxiety – Some Tools and Tips.

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

We all are familiar with some sort of nervousness or anxiety now and then in our day to day life. One needs not be a scientist to understand that this nervousness grows when the incident that is going to take place in near future or the accident that has just happened will directly or indirectly affect our life.

Most students do experience some sort of anxiety, an uneasiness or apprehension during test or examination due to their over-concern, worry or fear. It is found that test anxieties sometimes causes mental blocks and the students leave the answer script blank though they knew the correct answer.

Researchers say that, anxiety creates a kind of “noise” or “mental static” in our brain that eventually blocks the ability to retrieve and use the data stored in our memory and also affects our normal reasoning and comprehension skills.

But how can we overcome test anxiety!

The test preparation needs to be started very early and there is no last minute suggestion or easy way outs to overcome the situation.

If one is conscious of his test anxiety he must take special care about studying strategically. Mind mapping is a good way of dealing with this, where you create a diagram that reflects the summary and important points or facts like dates of the text. The widely used tool in this segment is the tree structure. The basic point is that it creates an image that can be remembered easily if you can just get hold of one thread.

While preparing for the examination, take a step by step procedure and sharpen your abilities by appearing for mock-tests. The mock tests can help you approach the real test with much confidence. Do not forget to take care of “time management” when you appear for mock test.

One should stay relaxed during examination and it can only be done if he or she is well prepared for it beforehand. Do not forget to have a sound sleep on the night before the examination and do not go to the hall in empty stomach.

Be positive throughout the time; you know better than any body that it is not so heard a nut that you cannot crack. There you are as better as much you think yourself to be.

If anything goes wrong, take a deep breath and start again or skip to the next question, if necessary, come back to it later.

At the end spend some time to review the answer script.

Some test anxiety overcome programs are available to assist students in reducing test anxiety and other types of learning and performance blocks like Test-Edge or Freeze-Framer. These tools help students to dramatically improve their mental and emotional balance and systems. The National Demonstration Study found that these programs were highly successful in reducing test anxiety and improving test scores for students.

We all wish you best of luck for your success in the next examination.

How To Get The Best Results Out Of Your Bulb Planting Efforts

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Bulb planting can be one of the most rewarding things a gardener can do. There’s nothing quite like putting that bulb in the ground, and watching as it grows into the full plant it’s meant to be. As long as some simple ground rules (pardon the pun) are followed, bulbs grow easily and are very rewarding.

Bulbs can be planted either in the fall or in the spring. Fall planting would be the preferred time to plant because that gives the flowers an opportunity to adjust to their surroundings, set their roots firmly, and bloom earlier in the spring. If you are going to be planting in the fall, anytime from about late September to early November is appropriate. Sometimes, circumstances lead us to not be able to plant until spring, or we would just rather wait. If that is the case, it is best to plant as soon as the ground thaws if you live in an area that freezes. If the ground does not freeze, anytime beginning in about mid-April through mid-May would be a good time. Your bulbs will bloom later than those planted in the fall, but they will still put on an impressive show. Planting in the fall does put the bulbs at an increased risk of being exposed to freezing temperatures because they will begin to grow earlier in the spring, but it is a risk that most gardeners are willing to take.

The majority of bulbs should be planted shallowly. There should be enough of a hole to cover them completely, but they do not need to go far down in the earth. However, there are some, like daffodils, that like to be planted a little deeper. Refer to the instructions on the bag or box for just how deep your bulbs should be planted. Be sure to follow those directions so that your flowers are not adversely affected by too deep or too shallow of a bed. Be sure to fertilize and water thoroughly as soon as the planting is completed. The bulbs will need those nutrients to help them root into their new home.

If the bulbs have been planted in the fall, as the winter months progress, they will remain dormant in the ground. Therefore, watering and fertilizing further will not be necessary until the ground begins to thaw in the spring. At that point, when the weather is dry for a few days and watering becomes necessary, do so with a garden hose for five minutes daily while the weather remains dry. Otherwise, it is safe to let nature take her course with these flowers while they are in bloom.

When blooming has completed, though it can be tempting to cut off those empty flower stalks, wait until they have become yellow and shriveled. The stalk is still taking in important nutrients to the bulb, which is now preparing for the next bloom season. If the stalk is cut off while it’s still taking in nutrients, in the following season, the flower will not bloom as well or may not bloom at all. It is important to give those flowers the time they need to prepare for the next growing season.

Can’t Lose Weight? It’s Time to Stop Feeding Your Demons

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Copyright © 2006 Debbie Fontana

When you can’t lose weight, the answer may be simple. Or it may be hard.

Maybe you really are just eating a little too much. Simple. Cut back.

Maybe you just turned 40 and as much as you hate to admit it, you’ll never have the body you had 20 years ago. Hard to admit, but with the right diet, you can still have a slimmer figure.

But what if you’ve had a long — maybe even a lifelong — battle with weight. And by that, I mean a serious weight problem, not just five pounds or so.

I’m not a doctor, I’m not a psychologist, I’m not a psychiatrist. And I’m not giving medical advice.

But I have observed enough people over the years to form this opinion.

For people with lifelong weight loss problems, the right diet can help. But it’s usually not about dieting. Because it’s not about the food.

Think about it.

Are you lonely, angry, depressed? Do you feel guilty, rejected, inferior? Or even unworthy of love or success?

Do you seek comfort in food because people let you down? Or maybe you feel like you’ve let yourself down?

Have you tried every diet there is and nothing seems to work? Or at least not for long?

Then consider this. When you dive into that box of chocolates, is it food or an escape?

Maybe there’s a sexual assault in your past. Maybe kids teased you mercilessly when you were young. Maybe family members always made you feel inferior. Maybe an ex-spouse — or a current spouse — made you feel unwanted and unloved.

You didn’t fight back. Maybe you couldn’t — literally, couldn’t.

So you turned to food. For comfort. For escape. For an excuse to drive people away.

Because when you’re fat, it’s okay to be shy. To be different. To be alone.

It still hurts. But at least, you have an excuse to hide.

You say you want to lose weight, you go on diet after diet, but when things get tough…

… you seek refuge in food. And it starts all over again.

So ask yourself this.

If you could go back to the one incident or the series of events or the period of time that led to your weight problem, would you choose to relive it all again just as it happened?

Or if you had the chance, would you change it?

Because every time you escape with food, you make the choice to feed your demons.

To relive whatever it is that hurts you.

To give people who bullied or hurt you the power to do it all over again. And again. And again.

So you have a choice to make. To relive or to live.

It’s that simple. And that hard.

If you can’t do it alone, seek out a trusted friend. Or better yet, a trained professional.

But ultimately, the choice is yours. Choose to let go.

Choose to live.

Unsecured loans: Don’t put your home as collateral

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

People prefer unsecured
loans for meeting their varied needs. The basic reason for people taking an
unsecured loan amount is that they want to avoid the threat of repossession of
their property. People find it as a better alternative to avail a smaller loan
amount with a shorter repayment term.

A borrower can
get a loan amount anywhere from £500 to £25000. The repayment term is shorter
as compared to a secured loan. People can fulfil most of their needs with unsecured loans. Whether you want to consolidate
your credit card debts or would like to go for a holiday trip, an unsecured
loan is a viable choice to meet most of your needs and requirements.

Unsecured loans
are a feasible loan option for the tenants and those homeowners, who don’t want
to put their home as collateral. It is a boon for the tenants, as they don’t have
their home, which can be put forth as collateral.

People whose
credit history is less than perfect, can also seek an unsecured loan,
if they fulfil the loan criteria of the lenders. A bad credit history could be
anything like missed payments, defaults, or County Court Judgements. You may get
an opportunity to improve your credit history as well with this loan option.

The eligibility criteria
for availing unsecured
loans
are that you should be above 18 years of age, and a UK
resident. Since, the lenders have larger risk while offering this loan type, so
they charge higher rate of interest as compared to a secured loan option.

But, before
going for this loan type, you need to compare the loan quotes from the different
lenders across the UK.
You can approach high-street banks, building societies and the private lenders in
the UK.
But, people are showing inclination towards private lenders, as they are
offering competitive rates due to the fierce competition among themselves.

Buying Diamond Wedding Rings

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Traditionally most people opt for a plain gold wedding ring when getting married. However there are many beautiful diamond wedding rings available both in stores and online. Shopping wisely could also result in finding a bargain.

Diamond wedding rings are not only beautiful but are a rare natural resource that comes in different levels of quality.

If you have decided to buy a diamond wedding ring rather than a plain band there are a few things that need to be considered.

The most important and often forgotten is that the wedding ring will be worn on the same finger as the engagement ring, although this is not essential traditionally they are worn side by side. With this in mind it is important that they compliment each other.

If your engagement ring is large and contains either one big diamond or a large cluster of diamonds it would be a good idea to go for a more simple diamond wedding ring. A solid gold band with one or a few small diamonds would be perfect.

A diamond wedding ring could be costly so it is always wise to set yourself a budget before looking to avoid disappointment.

If you go to a jeweller be sure to tell them your maximum price that you are willing to spend and advise them you are not interested in seeing anything above your maximum price.

If you already have an engagement ring it would be a good idea to take it with you to show the jeweller so they can advise you which diamond wedding ring would look the best along side it.

Always ask if they have any sort of payment plan and make sure you work out any interest that will be added on to see if the plan suits you and your budget.

Purchasing matching diamond wedding rings for both yourself and your partner may seem easy as you are only looking for one style of ring however two people’s opinions need to be taken into account, discuss with your partner the styles of diamond wedding rings you both like to avoid any arguments in a store.

Another important thing to remember when looking for diamond wedding rings is to make sure that the price shown on the ring is the price for the whole ring and not per diamond, some jewellers will price the stones separately.

You can always cut costs by looking at imitation diamond wedding rings, especially if you have over spent on the wedding its self, there is no reason why you can not later replace the ring with a real diamond wedding ring when you are in a better position.

Some stores sell imitation diamond wedding rings and you really wouldn’t be able to tell if they were fake or not and you could save yourself a lot of money.

UFC: Tito Ortiz a no-show for exhibition match with White

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Due to the absence of Tito Ortiz for his weigh-in Friday, the much-awaited battle between the UFC fighter and Dana White, President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been cancelled, at least for now.

White was scheduled to make his professional boxing launch on March 24, 2007, against his former client Tito Ortiz. This was also an attempt to work out their feud, supposedly contending in a three-round boxing exhibition. In fact, Ortiz previously sent daring messages to White asserting his determination, as well as the authenticity of the fight. However, Ortiz left a message indicating his decision to let White “off the hook.” The decision of Ortiz actually left many people puzzled and surprised, especially the Nevada State Athletic Commission which previously lauded Ortiz for his

professionalism in these types of events. Given this, it’s hard to

imagine what instigated Ortiz’s failure to show up.

Ortiz, a 32-year old American-Mexican mixed martial arts fighter from Huntington Beach, California, began his martial arts career as a wrestler in his sophomore year in high school. After a series of successful competitions, he headed for more prestigious competitions worldwide.

Previously, he headlined many pay per view championship cards and graced the covers of several magazines. Also known as “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,”

his awards and accomplishments includes the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion with 5 title defenses, a 2006 Golden Gloves, a 2006 Fight of the Year, and a

2006 Feud of the Year among others. At present, he has 15 wins, 5 losses and 0 draws.

Others speculate that Ortiz’s nonappearance is due to his desire to acquire more money since Spike TV intended to broadcast segments of the their fight as a promotional tool for the highly anticipated UFC 69. Meanwhile, others perceive his move as an avoidance of the possibility of his defeat in the hands of White.

Does a Building Need An Architect

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Information Technology (IT) is more complex than most buildings. This is why it requires a similar architectural process in order to have a positive and predicted outcome. Too many IT projects don’t end positive or as predicted. IPA business analysts end up running hundreds of surveys in companies all over North America. They’re exposed to many IT environments of various complexity and effectiveness. My experience as an analyst leads me to believe that staff tends to fall into three categories. The first and largest group would be those who believe they are completely IT illiterate. The second largest group would be those who think they are the second coming of Bill Gates. This group is considerably smaller. The third and smallest group are those who believe they fall somewhere in between. This is a common disparity and creates a common problem. Those who believe they have no understanding of IT look to anyone with some understanding as highly proficient in all areas; even worse they often confuse PC proficiency with IT proficiency.

The truth is even those who are brilliant in the IT domain are rarely strong across all divides. It is more common that quality IT staff will have superior ability(s) in one or two areas. Here are four basic areas of proficiency to consider. I am certain there are many ways to slice this pie but, in order to keep this short and sweet, consider these four.

1) Hard (Hardware & Networking)
2) Soft (Software, Database & Coding)
3) Application (Planning & Programming Adaptation / High Level)
4) Project Driver (Single Point of Contact & Oversight / Super High Level)

It is very rare that anyone would be exceptionally strong across the board. Placing too much faith in the office “PC guru” is one reason so many IT projects fall short of the anticipated miraculous impact on sales and profits.

Often projects get more driven by the shininess of new equipment and the technical jargon that gets added to staff’s vocabulary. The person or people entrusted may believe acquiring state of the art servers, monster switches, brilliant routers, and the latest greatest cabling and optical fiber is the answer to everything. The problem is the real “answer” is to question that was never asked or asked poorly.

Questions are the foundation of a building in the IT world called “Application”. An ergonomically designed building in the construction world requires a good architect. A well designed IT environment requires the same. The best application architecture comes from processing what you are trying to accomplish while momentarily ignoring the seduction of the hardware and software and the allure of multibillion marketing practices. It is not uncommon for a highly complex technology environment to become an expensive albatross. The reason is the brain for the brain is missing; the application side is weak. Wildly expensive, enormously sophisticated software purchases loaded up with unimaginable binary horsepower fall victim to the same short sidedness. I have been in too many companies hell-bent on purchasing bigger servers and laborious software with absolutely no way to support it.

Proper planning is the key. As obvious as that statement is, technophobia often critically weakens this essential step via a passing the hot potato style of delegation.

Application
Architects require surveys of the existing conditions, such as soil conditions to support the enormous building weights. This ultimately defines footings and foundation requirements. Lot sizes in combination with the local laws pertaining to set backs and zoning affect what you can and cannot build. The survey is where an architect starts in the construction world and the same applies in application architecture. A survey must be performed.

Step 1)
Take a survey of the current platform. Both the business platform and the technology platform need to be analyzed. The current hardware is normally the only substantial survey ever taken. The analysis needs to be heavily weighted to the current business operations. Strong consideration of potential opportunity, lost opportunity, efficiencies and inefficiencies, as well as the current operations model needs to be graphically converted into flow charts that define everything. Schematics need to clearly show the information flow, interdepartmental processes and global processes accompanying written specs. A company outsider should be able to read this and understand in detail critical processes from the survey’s findings. An identical process is used in the construction world by building architects who eventually evolve their construction document from existing conditions documents called as-built drawings, plot plans or “surveys”.

Step 2)
Brain Storm every imaginable opportunity and all potential changes. Be brave, nothing is stupid. You will find quantity will eventually become quality. This is purely an exercise in discovery. You have to walk on the moon to personally feel and relate to its gravity.

Step 3)
Narrow the creative processes to what is likely to work; get sensible. Start applying cost & benefit analysis. Look at what your true resources are. It is important to understand budgetary constraints, people’s ability constraints, and timeframe constraints. You need to be vigilant in cost to benefit as well as hassle to benefit analysis. Look for potential risks, the landmines in the road ahead. Be honest with yourself about impact: learning curves, culture shock, political impact, systems impact, debugging impact, moving the big ship impact. Repeat Step 3 as many times as it takes. Don’t let mental fatigue prematurely hasten this vital process. Often more focused surveys will evolve requiring an increasingly narrowing brain storming process. Once comfortable with the final incremental impact analysis you are ready for the next step in the application evolution.

Step 4)
A high level of confidence in the strategic planning and schematics are a required precursor for this step. Once the written problem/resolution logistical spec is done and final agreed upon procedural changes outlined it will be time to sharpen the information processing to support and proactively enforce the objectives of everything you wish to accomplish. This is where the interface of the technology side and application come together. Ultimately all the high level planning becomes low level information handling. When designed correctly the end user interface should mandate, high level performance. Ironically high level application will become lines of code and clever programming that ultimately become templates, macros, websites, databases, smart queries and smart metrics. Codes sequenced in billions of zeros and ones will get routed at the speed of light through networks that should be designed to support all of this with scalability within anticipated growth and budgetary constraints.

Step 5)
The best of the construction world architects with the most proactive design methodologies will still encounter change orders because of unforeseen problems. The more proactive the blueprint, the fewer change orders. This holds true in application architecture too. No matter how well you plan, you will encounter unforeseen problems resulting in change orders. You should always plan, budget and anticipate accordingly. Modifications to the original application design of your IT project will happen. It is easy to make rash decisions because you are in “lets just get it done” mode. That is likely to create more change orders and less is better. You can avoid falling into that trap by employing the same methodologies as described in steps 1-4 only with a narrowed focus on what precipitated the need for a change from the original application.

It becomes increasingly critical as you add more stories to a building’s design the necessity for a strong foundation to support it. Designing information technology to support your operations follows the same rule. The more layers of complexity likewise will require a stronger application. This is especially the case when you are introducing either new technology or technology intended to dramatically enhance operations. Over look this and you may find your parking spot in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Is Your Site Ready for the Average User?

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

What is the “Average User”?

If you have been using computers and surfing the Internet for some time, as is likely the case since you’re visiting a site for webmasters, you would probably have acquired a large number of skills that enable you to find things on the Internet, navigate a site, deal with the annoyances that some sites pose, and the like. The problem with such proficiency is that it is easy to lose touch with how a large portion of Internet users actually operate on the Web, and thus design a site that does not take advantage of the special needs of these “average users”.

I realize that some of you will probably take exception to my use of the term “average user”. After all, it is difficult to pinpoint what an average user is. The “average user” in the computer industry is vastly different from, say, the “average user” in the agricultural sector.
My use of “average user” here might appear to some to have the connotation of “novice user”. I refrained from using “novice” because many of these users are not exactly new to using a computer yet their level of competence in surfing the Internet and their knowledge of the use of the computer is at best rudimentary. With the explosion of the Internet reaching into many homes in the world, it seems to me that such users are continually increasing in number. Where once upon a time when we think of a computer user we imagine a nerd, now, just about everyone uses a computer, even my elderly parents. This widespread use of computers also means that the computer is no longer the province of an elite few who actually understand the innards of a computer. The average user is no longer that computer professional, but the large number of people who treat the computer as an appliance, somewhat the way we regard our toasters or VCRs.

This in turn has implications on the things you can do on your site and the things you might want to avoid.

1. Visiting a Site When a URL is Known

If I were to give you a URL like “naxtor.com.au“, how would you visit that site? Typically, you would type it into the location bar (also known as the “address bar”) in your browser and the browser would immediately retrieve the page from the site.

It’s amusing to watch how the “average user” actually handles a URL. Take my mother for example. After watching a TV show which gave her a URL “oprah.com” to visit, she went to her browser, typed “oprah.com” into the Google search engine form, and sent the query to Google. When Google returned the search results, among which was a link to (what else?) oprah.com, she would click the link to finally visit “oprah.com”.

She’s not alone in this. According to a report from Metacrawler, some of the top search engine queries were for terms like “hotmail.com”, “www.hotmail.com”, “google”, “yahoo” and the like! It looks like many people do not know that they can directly access the URL by typing it into their browser’s address bar.
The lesson here is simple. Even if your site is a local site that advertises its URL via local TV, calling cards, printed newspapers, etc, it pays to have your site listed in the search engines. Otherwise, some of your “average users” will come to you and complain that your site could not be found!

2. Reviewing Search Engine Results
I find it educational to watch others search the Net and then navigate the web sites they find. One of the things I notice among these “average users” is that they really read the title of the pages returned on the searches.

For example, when you search Google for, say, “chicken recipes”, Google returns a list of pages with the titles of the pages hyperlinked. My observation is that most people review the list carefully and only click those hyperlinks which have titles that appear relevant to them. In this regard, I’m fairly confident that most experienced searchers do the same too.

Lesson: make sure your pages have an appropriate TITLE tag. The TITLE tag should contain the keywords that you’re targeting in the search engines so that people who search for those words will see the relevance of your page and click on the link. The TITLE should also be more than just a string of keywords strung together – it should make sense and sound relevant.

3. Reading the Web Page
Where the design of a web page is concerned, the KISS principle (“Keep It Simple, Stupid”) may actually help you to keep your visitor. A cluttered page with too much information tends to confuse visitors, and cause them to think that the information cannot be found on your site.

It doesn’t mean that your site has to have the spartan appearance of the Google search engine or naxtor.com.au. It can be decorated with colours and images, etc. But if there is some central information that you want to convey, or product that you want to sell, making it appear prominently on the page helps the average user zero in on what he/she is looking for.

4. Dealing with Pop-ups
There are two conflicting views regarding how newbies or perhaps even the typical web user deal with pop-up windows.

Some webmasters say that when they put their newsletter subscription forms in a window that pops up automatically when their site is loaded, their subscription rates rise markedly. As such, they recommend that you do the same, suggesting that your newsletter subscription rates will soar when you do so.

My experience with watching a few people surf the Internet was quite different. One of them got confused by pop-up advertisement windows appearing, and being unable to figure out how to go on from there, closed all the windows (which alas also terminated his dial-up connection) and had to start all over again. Another person was faced with a site that opened a hyperlink in a new window. After that person was through with that window, she found she could not use the BACK button to return to the original window. (She could not go back using that button since the original site was in a different browser window!)

In general, these people did not appear to do too well when confronted with multiple windows appearing. In fact, although they use their computer often to do word processing, play games and surf the Internet, it looks to me like they do not how to run multiple programs simultaneously and switch between them.

These observations (which are fairly recent) presents a problem for me as a webmaster. Although I make it a policy never to introduce pop-up windows in my site, I used to habitually code all my off-site links to open in new browser windows. However, in view of this discovery, it looks like I have the massive job of removing this “feature” from all my sites, since it is possible that the “typical” user doesn’t know how to manage more than one window at a time.

As for the pop-up advertisement and newsletter subscription windows, all I can say is that if you really think you need that, you should do a test run on your site before you implement it site-wide. What works on one site might fail in another because the latter attracts a different crowd with a different level of expertise. If you can, try to garner visitor feedback as well as check the impact of those pop-ups on your advertisement click throughs and subscription rates. You should also see if it hurts the number of people visiting deeper pages on your site – this might be an indication that they got lost after they saw your pop-up.

5. Browser Start Page
The average user seems to rely on his start page which is usually set for him by default by his ISP. Since such users learned to access the Net from that page, and they access a search engine from that page, that start page becomes the launching pad from which they access the Internet.

Some sites apparently realise this, and thus try to get visitors to change their start page to point to a page on their site. This is easy to accomplish for visitors using Internet Explorer (“IE”) since the start page can be changed with a script in IE. They provide a link to the script which the user merely has to click to change the start page.

If you are planning to create your own start page for your visitors, my suggestion is that you also put links to search engines on that page or perhaps even put a search box directly on that page (some search engines even provide you the HTML code to do this). This makes the page more useful to those users, thus increasing the chances that they will stick to your start page. That is, don’t just stick your advertisements onto that page. Make it useful as well.

Note that the fact that they rely on the start page does not mean that they stay an inordinate amount of time on it staring at it. Bear this in mind before you persuade all your visitors to use your start page. You might wind up paying for the bandwidth each time they log on without correspondingly gaining from the advertising revenue.

The Average-User-Friendly Site
It is possible to take advantage of the idiosyncrasies of the “average user” in the design and planning of your web site. Doing so not only produces a user friendly site, but also helps you accomplish the goals for your site.

Owning land in Costa Rica has never been easier!

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Many people think that owning land in a foreign country is a far off dream or fantasy. However, it is easier than you might think. A tropical paradise awaits, if you choose to purchase real estate in Costa Rica. Lush rainforests, breathtaking mountain views and Costa Rica beach properties are just a few of the desirable locations investors consider.

Investing in Costa Rica is easy with the help of land development companies located throughout the country. They help buyers through all the details of property ownership, from finding the perfect piece of Costa Rica land for sale to forming an LLC corporation (an S.A. in Costa Rica and the only way foreigners can purchase Costa Rica property), and paying all applicable taxes and fees. These developers will help investors navigate through the entire process. In addition, many of these companies will take the extra step to help the new owner in developing the property with modern infrastructure such as roads, water, sewer and electric.

The reason Costa Rica real estate is such a hot commodity is due in part to the Central American Foreign Trade Agreement (CAFTA). This legislation has brought thriving Fortune 500 corporations to the country and has increased the value of Costa Rica Properties. IBM, Intel, Sony and Chiquita are just a few of the large corporations that call Costa Rica home. Couple big business with no year-end income tax filings (the government takes 9% from employee wages in lieu of income tax filings) and Costa Rica becomes not only a beautiful place to live, but an economical one as well.

Not only is Costa Rica land desirable, the country is host to some of the most generous people on earth. Known for their hospitable nature and genuine compassion, they are as beautiful as the land in which they call home. This along with its breathtaking scenery is one of the main reasons people are drawn to Costa Rica. However, the economical nature of the country’s property is why people often choose to stay.

The dream of owning land in a foreign country is easier and less expensive that you may think. Costa Rica is a tropical paradise just waiting to be explored with prime real estate just waiting to be purchased.

Hang Onto That 2 Dollar Bill

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Today, when we go to a store many of us pay for our commodity by hard currency or cash, if we don’t have our credit cards with us. We are very intimate with the different money values that we see regularly. Or at least have a good idea of what they look like and there value. However, there is one type of money bill that is seen very rarely. This is the 2 dollar bill and because it is barely ever used or seen there are many stories that have developed about this bill. And to think that my kids haven’t even seen a 2 dollar bill.

These urban legends or folktales have all inspired the myth that the 2 dollar bill is not what you would conceive as being real money. Boy, is that the furthest from the truth. In fact the 2 dollar bill is now starting to be seen as a collectors item. For this rationality when people see a 2 dollar bill they will either regard it as being a fake or they will decide that it is so uncommon that they need to own this bill. Hence how it has become a collectors item.

Even though you will not see the 2 dollar bill all that much, there are some of these bills still in circulation today. Due to the collection of the 2 dollar bill the public has now started to see it fade from public sight. It is only when there is a severe deficiency of this bill that the Fed Money Reserve will start printing a new batch. What an interesting concept, hey folks we are out of this type of bill we better go and print a few more off. It isn’t really that simple, but the Federal Reserve does watch and regulate the money flow including 2 dollar bills.

How this works is that because there are not many people using these dollar bills there is no real need to print out a large sum of them. As this is the case the sum of 2 dollar bills that you can find are regarded as being used by by a very small population. The less times the Feds print the 2 dollar bill, the more valuable it becomes. The printing of this bill has seen a serious decrease over the last 10 to 20 years. This means a higher value for those of you that are interested in collecting this bill.

Since the 2 dollar bill is not thought of as being part of the monetary system there are few facilities or shops and other places to take the 2 dollar bill. but, I tell you now, hang onto that bill and put it into your collection. Alternatively you will find that various other items have been located in the sections where the 2 dollar bill inevitably use to go. There is another problem that you may run into when you try to use a 2 dollar bill. As so very few people have heard of a 2 dollar bill much less seen one, they may think that you are trying to play some type of game with them.

There are still others who may feel that you are spending fake money. Therefore if you do come over a 2 dollar bill you might want to hang on to it until you can switch it at the bank where they will not look at you funnily! Or better yet hang onto it and add it to your ever growing coin collection. this bill one day will no longer be printed by the feds (if it hasn’t already stopped) and will grow in value.

Renewable Energy

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

If you’re looking for a way to conserve electricity, renewable energy may be the answer.

Renewable, or solar energy, uses the sun’s light, along with wind and even certain molecules in plants and animals in order to power cars, turn on lights, and keep appliances working. Heat is produced whenever the sun touches something, and solar energy can be used to power almost anything. Natural gas, oil, and coal are all byproducts of solar energy, since the plants and animals used to create these natural resources receive their energy from the sun. However, since coal, oil, and gas are resources that can be depleted from the earth, they should be conserved as much as possible, which is why scientists and environmentalists are conducing progressive research on ways to use renewable energy in every day life. This way, solar energy can be used more often.

Powering everything with solar energy isn’t possible just yet, since a way to capture enough sunlight to power everything in a home or business hasn’t been discovered. So, many people use solar panels, which can be placed on a side of a roof to attract sunlight during the day that can be used to heat rooms and water.

Solar panels can be purchased at a number of retail stores now, as well as online. Panels do a great job of helping families and businesses to conserve energy. Hopefully, solar panels will become a part of daily life, in order to prevent the disappearance of natural resources and to maintain energy conservation.

Christmas – Introduce the Beloved European Family Tradition of Collecting ‘Santon’s'!

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Have you ever heard of ‘santons’? Well they are big for Christmas collectors in Europe. Santon is derived from the word ‘santouon’ which means ‘little saint’. They are clay figures, hand painted and about 70 millimeter high representing 19th century French Provencal characters.

Many people have a real passion for collecting these figures. There are hundreds of different figures, animals and accessories from which to choose. There are bakers, millers, fishermen, water carriers and even bear trainers! It is popular for most families to add a piece or two every year to their home collections. Santon collections are considered family heirlooms which are passed down lovingly from parent to child through the generations. Each year families enjoy the fun of choosing a new addition or two for their collections.

Santon making is said to have began as a popular act of resistance during the French Revolution to the closing of churches during this time. Creches were before the French Revolution big business and were displayed in the churches where crowds flocked to view the elaborate designs. With the churches closed the people’s beloved creches were no longer available for public access. It was Jean-Louise Lagnel (1764-1822) from Marseilles who started to make the beloved creche figures for people to purchase for display in their own homes. Jean-Louise was in demand with his affordable priced figures.

Jean-Louise Lagnel used the province of Marseille’s and Aubagne’s fine clay. He used small moulds and the casts were hand painted. It didn’t take long for others to start perfecting his technique. The figures were referred to as ‘creches for the people’. Soon santon makers added local characters and trades which became popular. The santon makers idea of using ordinary people from every day life on their way to pay homage to the Holy Family became an instant hit. Later santon fairs were held throughout regions. Today the oldest and also the largest (founded in 1803) is still alive and popular today in Marseille. It is held from Advent through to Epiphany. It is an event not to be missed!

Still popular to this very day is the art of santon making with workshops in many regions across Provence which visitors are welcomed as participants of workshops or to browse and purchase. MSG in Your Personal Care Products

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Important! Read this before you buy any cosmetics or personal care products that contain protein or amino acids!

MSG may be hidden in your cosmetics and personal care products. If you know you’re sensitive to MSG, you may be avoiding it in your food but still noticing MSG-type reactions and not know where they’re coming from.

Do you ever get a headache or notice other unpleasant symptoms when you put on your makeup, shampoo your hair or wash your face? Have you ever wondered why? Or do you just shrug it off and pop a pill to mask the symptoms? Maybe you just grin and bear it and don’t give any thought to the fact that there might be a relationship between the product you’re using and the symptoms you’re feeling.

If you try to avoid MSG in your food, just because you believe it’s harmful, you may be surprised to know that MSG is found in more than food. It can be found in your cosmetics and personal care products, like makeup, soap, shampoo and conditioner. You may also be getting a dose of MSG in your daily vitamin supplements. Over-the-counter and prescription medications may also contain it, as well as vaccines that are given to your children.

MSG sensitivity is commonly referred to as Chinese Restaurant Syndrome because it’s frequently used in Chinese foods and many people experience symptoms like headaches, dizziness and sweating after eating Chinese food.

MSG is short for monosodium glutamate. It also applies to processed free glutamic acid, which is glutamic acid that has been freed from protein through a manufacturing process or fermentation. MSG is a neurotoxin. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and the placental barrier and excites nerve cells to death. If you’re pregnant, it may even affect your unborn baby.

Even if you’re not sensitive to MSG, these are good reasons to avoid it.

How do you know if MSG is in the products you use?

First of all, you have to read the label. Not just the front of the label that tells you what the manufacturer wants you to believe about the product, but the ingredients list on the back of the label. You know, that tiny print that’s often so small and in a color that blends in with the label that it’s almost impossible to read. The more difficult it is to read, the more important it is for you to read it. Carry a magnifying glass with you and make sure you read every label of every product … BEFORE you buy. Dying To Look Good is a book that will help you read labels and choose healthy products.

Look out for these ingredients that are hidden sources of MSG:

-hydrolyzed proteins

-amino acids

-yeast extract

-nayad (potent yeast extract)

-glutamic acid

-glutamates

MSG may also be in or be the result of:

-processed proteins

-enzymes

-carrageenan

There are many more ingredients that are hidden sources or potential hidden sources of MSG, but these are the ones that are most likely to be found in cosmetics and personal care products.

MSG is not the only ingredient that you need to watch out for in your skin care products. There are many harmful ingredients in the cosmetics and personal care products on the market today. Some are even known to cause cancer. Make sure that the products you use on your skin contain safe and healthy ingredients because what you put on your skin can be absorbed directly into your bloodstream and affect your health.
