Investment Management Firms
When talking about investment management firms, it is very important to understand profit maximization and wealth maximization. According to the objective of profit maximization, the ultimate goal of a business enterprise is to maximize its profits. All the efforts of the organization are to be directed to achieve this goal. The profit maximization objective is justified, as business is conducted for earning profit. When profit earning is the aim of the business, profit maximization should be the obvious objective. Profitability is an indicator of the efficiency with which the firm is managed. The higher the profit, the better the efficiency. For growth and expansion, profit is the main source of finance. To meet unforeseen contingencies reserves are necessary, which is possible only if there is enough profit.
However, the profit maximization objective is objected to on some grounds. The term profit is vague. It may assume different meaning in different contexts. It may be short-term or long-term. The concept of profit maximization generally ignores the time value of money. All profit gained in different time periods are taken together. The risk involved in any given project and the uncertainty of return are not at all considered. Accounting bias influences profit.
On the other hand, according to the objective of wealth maximization the ultimate goal of a business enterprise is to maximize the wealth of the shareholders, which is represented by the market value of the shares of the firm. Wealth is defined as the net present worth of the firm, i.e., the present value of all future returns.
Though the wealth maximization objective seems superior to the profit maximization objective, it is to be noted that the former is based upon the latter. The market price of shares, which is the indicator of the wealth of the firm, is based on the long-term returns of the firm. The returns that accrue to the investor would be a function of the earnings of the company. Thus it can be said that these objectives are not competing.
Koi Pond: Digital Masterpieces- Virtual Water Features Part I
One of the most challenging aspects of designing ponds and waterfalls is trying to convey my ideas to my client. Coming up with award-winning pond designs or implementing them using adequate skills and experience is not a problem.
My challenge is getting my client to see what I see. Drawing and painting are not my forte; it is next to impossible for me to draw a rock, not to mention water. The hardest part for me is drawing perspective. Prior to discovering the art of digital design my most common phrase used was, “Just trust me.” Wait till your pond and waterfall is finished, I promise you’ll like it.
Unfortunately, “trust me” are the most common two words spoken by used car salesmen! Thank goodness that most of my clients were referrals from other satisfied customers and already knew what I was capable of creating.
A few years ago, I discovered a computer program called “Photoshop” and realized I could use it to create virtual photos of water features. I learned how to cut an item from one picture and paste it into another. Actually, that was nothing new for me since I did that in third grade. It’s called cut and paste. Only now I’m using a mouse instead of rounded scissors and edible white paste. (I hear the manufactures are adding vitamins to it now.
I started out scanning dozens of photographs into “Photoshop,” which converted them into a digital image capable of being manipulated in hundreds or thousands of ways. The Photoshop program has a large learning curve, especially for someone who is unfamiliar with graphic design techniques, so I started searching for a solution for my pond design department.
DIGITIZING PHOTOS
Microsoft has developed a user-friendly software (small learning curve) for working with photographs. They can be scanned into the program or digital photos from a digital camera can be downloaded into the program. Then each picture can be enhanced through a variety of processes such as brightness, contrast, blur, tint, etc., all with a simple click of the mouse.
Once the photo is finished, I can then cut out objects from the picture, such as rocks, groups of rocks, plants, or portions of the waterfall and pond. Which I did from several thousand photos of waterfalls and ponds I have constructed over the past 26 years.
I gathered these jpg images into an indexed library. Using this process with pictures from hundreds of my projects, I was able to build a substantial library of objects for pasting into the “before” photo of a client’s yard for a pond design.
Now I can take a digital picture of someone’s yard and download it into Microsoft’s “Digital Image Suite ” program. (This is not an endorsement, it just happens to be the product I use. I do not sell Microsoft products and have no investments in the company) Next, by dragging various items from my library, I can construct a waterfall and pond of any shape, size or configuration onto that picture.
So thanks to the arrival of the digital age, I can construct on paper a virtual image or idea that was in my head. As a result, my clients can see exactly what their pond and waterfall will look like when finished. Now a pond design takes only minutes.
Whether you are building a waterfall and pond for yourself or for a customer a pond design or waterfall design can be a marvelous thing. Simply marvelous! Happy koi, Peace & Joy.

The Real World: Life after Law School
First of all, if you step into that marble foyer for the first time and realize that you would rather be anywhere but there, you should be. The practice of law is for people who truly want to be lawyers. Those who don’t have their hearts in it will have a very difficult road ahead of them. However, if the smell of all those legal pads really gets you going, don’t lose track of that passion. It will get you through what just might be the toughest 12 months of your life.
Many fresh-faced new lawyers go into their first year on the job with visions of perfection dancing in their heads. They plan to draft perfect briefs and advance perfect ideas while wearing perfectly ironed shirts and smiling perfectly bright smiles. They are usually disappointed.
When it comes to doing the grunt work that first-years are sure to do, it’s usually easier to focus more on getting the job done right rather than getting it done perfectly. There won’t be anyone grading your papers, making sure you’ve done everything properly. There will, however, be a real, live client paying good money for you to make sure that what he/she wants gets done.
In short, you should try to have a broader perspective when it comes to first-year work. Focus on the overall goal of accomplishing a task, and don’t get bogged down in the miniscule details.
Once you start working as an attorney, there will be many things you won’t have any idea how to do. For example, the firm will have its own system of filing, distributing information, and handling day-to-day operations. Many times, you won’t know where to go, how to get there, or whom to talk to once you do; but instead of spending your days in the restroom mopping your sweaty brow, ask someone for a practice guide that deals directly with the firm’s practice areas. This is a simple, easy way to get your head above the water and gulp in some much-needed air.
Once you have a basic understanding of how things at the firm work, you will gain confidence in your own abilities and become more comfortable doing the work. However, there will most likely come a day when someone hands you an assignment that leaves you baffled, wondering what in the world you spent the last three years of law school learning. In this situation, take a deep breath, and go with your gut instinct. Do what you think you should do, regardless of whether or not you know that it’s the right thing to do. Most likely, your gut feeling will be correct. After all, you must have developed some sort of legal intuition while sitting immobile in those stuffy college auditoriums. Also, don’t be afraid to ask a senior associate or partner for answers to questions or for clarification on assignments. Sometimes, you can save a lot of time simply by asking the right person a question. Now on to arguably the most exciting part of being an attorney (at least in the eyes of new associates): the perks. The best advice in this area is moderation. Overdoing it or taking advantage of the firm in any way will be viewed negatively. Therefore, even if the firm seems liberal when it comes to living the high life, it’s always better to exercise a certain level of restraint. Another area where restraint should be practiced is in regard to your personal life. Don’t get me wrong. Everyone has issues of a personal nature that have to be dealt with from time to time, but keep in mind that your superiors have their own personal problems to deal with. Unless you have a personal matter that absolutely, positively must be discussed, keep your private life to yourself. Also, it’s a good idea to talk things over with your family and friends prior to starting work so that they understand exactly what you’re getting into. That way, you won’t have to deal with the added stress of family disagreements and disappointments if you have to suddenly renege on commitments. And a last little tidbit of advice for newbie attorneys is to take advantage of your status. Partnership will come soon enough, and then you won’t be able to ask dumb questions or get lost on your way to the restroom. Take this opportunity to learn as much as you can while you have the least amount of responsibility. Being teachable during the first 12 months will pay off in the future.
Suggestions For Decorating A Small Dining Room
Your dining room is a great place for family meals and you need it to have a great design theme. But when your space is small, it can be an arduous task to have it looking appealing. Luckily, there are many interior design tips for decorating small dining rooms.
You should plan to be positive to decorate for the size of your space. You may also want to make sure to design in a sufficient amount of storage space so you can properly put items away as clutter will make even a large dining room look cramped.
Consider keeping your furniture in the medium to small size range. Using a table with leaves, instead of a huge dining table, might make all the difference in space, yet still allow additional seating when necessary. But you don’t have to use all small pieces in your dining room, choosing some larger accessories will add interest and drama to the room, so you might use the small table but also match it with a large mirror or server, which not only adds some drama, but also gives off the feeling that the room is bigger than it actually is.
Another trick for decorating a small dining room is to take into consideration where the furniture and accessories are going to be in the space. Using the principles of Feng Shui in your dining room serves to help bring harmony to your area. Be positive your furniture is not placed near the doorways because this can truly open up the space. Plus, if you can focus the eye on the larger pieces like a server or mirror, it can help the room appear less small.
Think of elements you might add to your decorating scheme which will help to make good use of space in the dining room. Think about styles that allow for lots of baskets and shelving because these can be used as extra storage. Because this is where you will be eating lots of meals you ought to be sure to choose a room design you delight in.
One important piece of making your dining room look sizeable is the color palette. You don’t have to only use lighter colored paint color when making up for the size in a room. If you prefer to look at deep or bright colors in your dining room you can get color without making the room look even smaller if you go for a monochromatic palette, or one where the colors are an equal intensity. So you might even go for all blue gray, or stick to high intensity colors in the same range such as orange, yellow and red. Painting one of the walls a deep color will make it feel further away, thus adding depth to the room. To make your walls recede, and therefore the room appearing more spacious paint them with pale hues. If gray isn’t your choice of hue, you could also decorate with cool colors like greens and blues which will yield the same impression.
So there you have it, decorating a small dining room can be easy. Merely because your dining room is less spacious doesn’t mean it can’t possess the same fabulous interior design style you see in designer rooms – it simply involves a bit of unique creativity.
Create a Tropical Island Retreat in Your Home
The tropical look provides an island retreat awaiting you as you walk through the front door. Close your eyes and imagine the colors you’d see walking along the shore of an island paradise. Use soothing blues and white to reflect a glorious sky, lush greens, and earthy neutrals like beige, cream and brown to represent a sandy surf. Accent colors include reds, corals and other hues that remind one of tropical flora.
Be environmentally conscious and fashionable when purchasing your floor covering. Sisal and jute rugs woven from natural fibers keep the tropical look alive on the floor and provide textural interest against wood flooring.
A popular accessory for Tropical-style rooms is a wide-blade fan constructed from rattan or with palm paddles. Many of these fans today perform double-duty as light fixtures, with bulbs already attached at the base of the fan. This option keeps rooms bright and circulates air, making it a thoroughly modern, space-efficient design that nevertheless brings thoughts of the Tropics to mind.
While tropical woods like ebony, mahogany and teak are popular for attaining a tropical look, don’t purchase them unless they are certified sustainable. Wood furniture can also achieve a tropical look with carvings; popular motifs include pineapples, palm leaves or trees and flowers. Bamboo and rattan furniture also go far to create your private paradise, are eco-friendly, and utterly picturesque.
Keep fabrics breezy and light, both in color and texture. Favorite tropical prints reflect native botanicals that provide splashes of color, like the hibiscus or Bird of Paradise. Use real plants to bring the lush beauty of the tropics indoors, or dot bare surfaces on walls with floral prints or indigenous art. For a fun and practical twist, place a travel trunk someplace that needs some tropical flavor, and use it to store linens and other items out of the away.
Decorating Your Teenager’s Bedroom
Decorating the kitchen, bathroom, or living room is one thing, but when it comes to decorating a child’s room it can prove to be much more difficult. After all, it seems like every other day a child is into the next “in thing” so choosing a design that he/she will be happy with for more than just a few weeks can be a bit of a task!
Decorating a teenager’s room is also different than decorating a child’s room, as teenagers often want to be treated like adults. It is a good idea to allow your teenager to come up with a theme for their room so that they can express who they are, rather than have to put up with something you’d prefer. This can include choosing the colors of the room, although you may want to discuss this with them incase they choose an overwhelming dark tone!
It often does not require a complete redesign of a child’s room in order to make it look nice. Using wooden or colored blinds is a good alternative to curtains, place a rug on the floor in the room, change the color of bed linens, and replacing the headboard rather than the complete bed are just a few things to consider.
Rearranging furniture is also a very easy way to change the look of a room that can have a big affect. If a child is bored of the way their room looks it is very easy to move the bed, wardrobe, and cabinets around to give it a fresh feel. If you plan on using rugs you could also consider taking away the old carpet and leaving the wooden floorboards in place, rather than spending out on a new carpet. In addition to saving a lot of money, wooden floors can often be made to look a lot nicer.
Small accessories such as beading and fringe are another cheap way to change the look of various items. For example you could place it along the edge of shelves, lampshades, and hems of curtains to give a completely new look.
One of the best ways to change the feel of a room is by paying attention to the lighting. By using lamps around the room certain furniture and areas can be hidden or highlighted to show off a particular area. Dimmer switches are also good for bedrooms as the level of light can then be controlled.
Do You Want a Beautiful Life?
Your life is more than days and years. It is what you do with your time and how closely your choices match your values. It is how you maximize the possibilities that cross your path.
Life is full of surprises. Sometimes it can be confusing, messy, and discouraging. What seems to be a rock in your path may end up being a stepping stone to something important. You may look for shortcuts to tomorrow and not find any. Even so, it is still possible to find your way to a beautiful life.
“Beautiful” can mean different things to different people. Webster’s dictionary defines it as “having beauty; very pleasing and satisfying to the senses, eye, ear, and mind.” When it comes to applying “beautiful” to your life, begin by assuming that your basic needs for food, water, shelter, and physical and financial security are met.
Next, visualize what your beautiful life looks like. To do this, you need to know where you are going as well as where you have been. Make the picture of your beautiful life in color; it makes it more enticing. Make it large to make it more compelling.
Then, focus on your emotional and mental well-being. Get in touch with your purpose for being here. Your purpose grounds you and keeps you moving forward. If you feel lost, people who love you will find you.
In addition, to make a beautiful life which you deserve:
1. Love yourself. This means enjoying your own company and making peace with who you are at this moment in time.
2. Make time for yourself so that you can listen with your heart for your purpose in life.
3. Think positively and be happy. Remember, mistakes are opportunities to learn.
4. Put effort into things important to you; try. Be willing to stretch yourself and move outside your comfort zone once in a while.
5. Learn to be accepting and flexible when you cannot alter or avoid a situation to decrease your stress level. There is a saying, “When you don’t have what you want, try wanting what you have.”
If you want a challenge and to stretch yourself, add two more ideas to this list that you know would make your life beautiful. This will make the list more uniquely yours. Then, choose one of these ideas. Begin to focus on it until you feel it is a part of who you really are. Continuing to take one idea at a time from your list, you can move forward whenever you feel you are ready.
Having a beautiful life is not about having a perfect life or all the material things you want in your life. It is much deeper than that. It has to do with knowing what is important to you and being able to take action in a positive way. You have control over the choices you make. Your feelings about yourself and your life depend on your choices. Choose wisely.
Know Your Rights Before Filing For Divorce
When you are standing at the altar saying “I do” with 300 of your friends and family around you, the very last thing on your mind is the possibility of a divorce in your future. Damn the statistics, it cannot happen to me, you think.
Think again. Recent studies have shown that the divorce rate is almost at the 50% mark for couple being married in the past 5 years. What is the cause of that? Are people being too reckless with their commitments? Do people really think that the love they feel will see them through anything?
The biggest problem leading to divorce is a lack of communication between the partners. It really is a partnership, where each needs to know what the other is doing and thinking on a regular basis, as in daily. You need to make sure that you are both marching to the same drummer with the same goals in sight, both short term goals as well as long term goals, and without that communication, divorce is almost inevitable.
Is this a difficult thing? It should not be, but in today’s world where most households have both spouses working, it can prove to be difficult. When both spouses arrive at home after a long hard day at work, both are tired, perhaps irritable, neither feels like fixing dinner, and communication can often be the last thing on either one’s mind. Yet if that communications does not happen, it is inevitably that the two of you will take different paths, start creating separate goals, and pretty soon you find that divorce is the only viable answer, since your paths have parted so widely that there is little chance your paths will ever rejoin.
Divorce can be a comparatively simple procedure or it can be long and drawn out. It is in your best interests to get a good divorce lawyer. Really? Yes really. If the communications between you and your spouse have broken down to put you on separate paths, you cannot be sure of what your spouse will require or demand in the divorce process. Make sure you do not get hosed in that process, and without a good divorce attorney, that can easily happen before you are even aware of it.
Things can get messy if children are involved or there is a fair amount of capital holdings that were acquired since the wedding day. But even these items can be negotiated and worked out with good divorce attorneys, plus the desire to “just get it over with peacefully” on the part of both spouses.
If divorce is really the best or only option available to you, plan it with the same attention to detail that you used when you planned your wedding. Preparation and a thorough knowledge of what is involved and what can be negotiated is paramount in making sure that you don’t walk away with absolutely nothing. Almost anything is negotiable as far as “who gets what”, but be very clear on what are your rights, what are the rights of your spouse, and how to effectively manage the division of assets, including cash, stocks, and bonds.
Quality Furniture Starts at the Joints
A telltale sign of quality furniture is what kind of joints are used to combine the different wood elements. Avoid furniture that uses simple butt joints, where two pieces of wood are glued or nailed edge to edge without overlapping. These joints will not stand the test of time, let alone the rigors of everyday use. Look for these 5 basic joints when shopping for wood furniture:
Dovetail or English dovetail joints are widely considered the mark of quality drawer construction. When done properly, this joint “locks” drawer fronts in place, preventing loosening through many years of use.
Mortise-and-tenon joints are often used to join rails to side members in chests and dressers. This strong joint is also used to join key pieces of chair frames.
Dowel joints are very common in furniture construction. This joint involves gluing a dowel or peg, usually made of hardwood, into a pre-drilled hole to connect two pieces of wood.
Tongue-and-groove joints are often used to make a strong flat surface as well as to attach drawer fronts. When glued properly, these joints are very strong.
Corner blocks are used to help hold together joints at the greatest point of strain. An example of this is where seat rails of chairs join the posts.
Another important component in selecting case goods is what type of drawer slides or guides are used. While there are numerous variations and makers, it basically boils down to these two:
Wood-on-wood rails are the most basic type of drawer slide, consisting of either a single, center-mounted rail or two rails spaced toward the edges of the drawer. As the name implies, this slide works by wood-on-wood contact. These types of slides aren’t the smoothest and usually don’t age well. Unless you’re buying an older or antique piece, avoid chests and drawers that use this method.
There are many variations of this next type of drawer slide, but it normally consists of side or under-mounted rails that employ a smooth ball-bearing or wheel action. This type of slide uses a 4-piece system, whereby a track is affixed to each side of the drawer opening and the corresponding guide attached to the outside of the drawer. This type of guide can be made of metal or plastic, or sometimes a combination of each. Many of these drawer slides are equipped with a stopping mechanism to prevent the drawer from coming completely out.
Commercial Interior Designs
Perhaps you have looked in magazines, and marveled at the beauty of the commercial interior designs that they feature. Or, perhaps you have seen various commercial interior designs on television through one of those decorating shows. Regardless, you own a store, and you would like to make commercial interior designs a part of where you work.
Commercial Interior Designs for Your Store
You own a clothing store, and you would like to update the look of it in order to attract more customers. There are several important things you should change when it comes to commercial interior design, and that includes placement of mirrors, floors, lighting, and how the clothing is arranged.
First of all, a clothing store needs mirrors, as not everyone needs to try something on in a dressing room, especially when it comes to outerwear. Modern commercial interior design examples for a store include having strategically placed mirrors throughout the store. The key is to not have so many that they would be overwhelming, but at the same time having present that the customer doesn’t have to go searching throughout the store for one.
Many of the hottest clothing stores have the same kind of floor: light, smooth wood that has been highly polished. That kind of floor is ideal for if you are selling casual clothing, but if you are selling formal or especially fashionable clothing, black tiled floors provide a chic look.
When it comes to the lighting, commercial interior design dictates that it is all about the atmosphere that you are trying to create. Softer light provides more of an ambience, but one important rule is to stay away from fluorescent lighting, as it makes the colors in the clothing look harsh.
Perhaps the most important aspect of any commercial interior design ideas for a clothing store is in regard to how the clothing itself is displayed. Note the look of the most popular clothing stores.
Their clothes are easily accessible in every size that is available, and are most often laid out on tables or hung up on long vertical racks. Do not get those circular clothing racks that are prevalent in department stores, because that makes it harder for customers to find the clothes that they are looking for. Your clothing store should reflect the modern influences of commercial interior design, but it should also reflect your own personal design tastes.
15 Summer Decorating Ideas
Summer decorating is a wonderful time to lighten up the colors and fabrics in your home. While you may not be able to decorate every room, there are numerous ways to add summer flair. You can decorate with a summer theme such as fruit (apples, strawberries, grapes), flowers (roses, carnations, daisies), or seaside nautical in addition to following some of the ideas listed below.
1. Replace heavy drapery with light sheers. The sheers provide an airy appeal while letting in the sunshine. If removing your existing drapery is not an option, consider changing just the valance and tiebacks to a lighter color. Another option is to use grapevine wreaths, strands of beads, artificial flowers, or decorative ribbons as your tiebacks or swag holders.
2. Store away items that are not useful in the summer such as blankets, throws, and heavy quilts.
3. Lighten up the color of your sofa by placing a slipcover on it or replacing your dark colored pillows with lighter colors.
4. Place light colored slipcovers on your all-wood dining room or kitchen chairs.
5. To add a lighter summer touch to your dark wood tables, use white lace or doilies as runners or tablecloths.
6. If you have a heavy bedspread, considering replacing it with a lightweight linen blanket.
7. Bring in the outdoors by adding fresh flowers in vases or baskets to counters, tabletops, and nightstands.
8. Add summer accessories around your home such as birdhouses, sea shells, bowls of fruits or vegetables, and summer reading materials.
9. If you have dark lampshades, replace them with lighter ones.
10. Repaint a dark hallway in your favorite hue such as buttery yellow, a creamy tan, or a fresh apple green.
11. Display a grouping of floral plates on a wall, hutch, or fireplace mantle.
12. Clean out the ashes in your fireplace and fill the firebox with a large artificial fern or a basket of colorful flowers.
13. Place twigs in tall vases and set on each side of the fireplace mantle.
14. To add summer whimsy to your bathrooms, hang lightweight fabric shower curtains printed with ladybugs, bees, flowers, or palm trees. Display matching hand towels and rugs to continue the summer theme.
15. Change the layout of your furniture to give your rooms a fresh, new look.
Decorating your home for the summer does not have to be complicated or cost a lot of money. As you can see from the ideas listed above, a new lamp shade, adding new fabrics, or changing the paint color of a room can breathe new life into your interior design. So, have fun and use your imagination to bring some fresh new looks into your home for the summer season.
Decorating A Small Bathroom To Be Big On Style
You want your bathroom to be a room for pampering yourself and your design style is essential. Yet, remodeling or renovating a bathroom that is small might be challenging. Fortunately, there are a multitude of tricks you can use to make decorating small bathrooms a large success!
You might want to make sure to decorate for the size of your space. Dealing with a good amount of clutter in the bathroom will make the place appear smaller so shy away from decorating approaches that clutter up the room.
Furniture placement is another tip when decorating small bathrooms. While many people reject the aspects of Feng Shui, the principle behind it could still be used when placing the accessories and furniture in your bathroom. Unhindered access into a room will make it seem more spacious, so place your furniture away from the doorways. In addition, if you do purchase a larger piece of furniture, like a mirror or medicine cabinet, for example, it tends to help to draw guests attention to it and make the room feel less small into the bargain.
If you are able to paint your bathroom, then the colors that you pick out will play a big role in making it look more spacious. Despite common belief, you do not have to stick with white walls to make your room look more open. If you find white too bland, think about making use of a monochromatic decorating scheme in a muted color, or use a few colors that all have identical intensity. So you might go for all tuscan yellow, or bright colors in orange, yellow and red. Add unique interest to the room by painting one of the walls a deep, intense color which will cause it to appear further away, therefore, adding depth to the room. To give your walls the effect of receding, and thus the room feeling more spacious try using pale tints. Are You Ready For a New Bed?
Are you tired of your plain old boring metal bed frame? If you’re on the prowl for a new look in your bedroom, make one of these beautiful beds the centerpiece to your bedroom furniture. Whether you lean toward contemporary or traditional style, or somewhere in the middle, a platform, sleigh, or canopy bed may be just what you’re looking for.
For those looking for some modern flair, a new platform bed is a stylish and inexpensive way to kick start your bedroom décor. Platform beds are often low profile and many exude an Asian-inspired aesthetic with clean lines and smooth, sleek finishes. The headboards of platform beds are much different than those of traditional and transitional beds. They are seldom ornately detailed and overbearingly bulky. Instead, they usually have an understated, slim design that melds effortlessly with the rest of the bed. Platform beds save money by not requiring a box spring. They instead use a series of slats that run across the width of the bed to support the mattress.
If you lean toward the more traditional styles, perhaps an exquisite new canopy bed is right for you. This classically inspired bed style was first used in Europe in the 15th century as a second line of defense against leaky thatch roofs. As time went on, they became more and more elaborate and decorative. Today’s styles vary from ornate to simple, and everything in between. Models are available that include a top enclosure and often feature beautiful fabrics and materials.
Those who want something in the middle, need look no further than a new sleigh bed. While early versions of this Empire period creation were overwrought with detail and design, modern day sleigh beds feature toned-down foot and headboards with less defined scrolls. Today’s sleigh beds are less sleigh and more bed, making them an ideal choice to match almost any bedroom décor.

The Simple Beauty of Arts and Crafts Furniture and Lighting
The Arts and Crafts look doesn’t rely on elaborate curlicues and fussy formality, but gains beauty and function from unparalleled craftsmanship, functionality and simple, elegant lines.
A lot of your color will be found in the rich tones of your furniture. Pick a neutral background like beige, and accent with colors inspired by nature, including rose, indigo blue and deep green.
It’s all about earthiness, here. Make floors pop with ceramic tile or stone flagging, while simple, conservative colored tiles and linoleum can blanket your bathroom and kitchen, respectively. Keep feet off cold tile with environmentally friendly sisal and jute rugs, or cover floors with neutral-colored traditional rugs.
If you don’t have a chandelier or particularly lovely pendant as a point of focus in your room, you may want to get one to recreate the Arts and Crafts look, then use smaller wall lamps and table lamps as accents. Choose ones with brass or copper finishes, or wrought iron, hand hammered varieties. Glass should be stained or opaque.
Arts and Crafts furniture revolves around notions of quality materials, practicality and superior craftsmanship rather than fancy, detailed ornamentation. The construction itself is the aesthetic highlight of a quality piece of furniture, with exposed joints, paneling and clean lines enhancing the beauty of the wood and conveying the durability of a well-made product. To achieve this look, purchase squared or rectangular chairs featuring straight and ladder backs with generally wide arms, especially ones with rush-seating or upholstery. Invest in characteristic Arts and Crafts pieces like four-poster beds, chests, refectory tables and benches. Oak is typically the wood of choice for this type of furniture, also known as Mission style, and can have some embellishment in the form of carvings, hand-painting or inlays. You’ll find numerous Arts and Crafts style furnishings on the GREENCulture site.
Clutter is a definite trespass on the Arts and Craft ideal of practicality and function. Keep accents spare and simple, and make these precious details count. Use a wild flower or nature motif, or handcrafted metalwork like teapots, picture frames, sconces, jugs and vases in pewter, iron, silver, bronze or copper.
