I’ve written a lot over the past few month about online piano lessons and that it’s more important how you learn than what you learn. In other words, your teacher can give you reams of data and information but it easily can go in one ear and out the other. That’s why choosing the right online piano teacher is so important.

Learning piano properly is all about doing. You learn by doing because good practice habits are easily formed and data gets stored in the subconscious allowing you to pull it out whenever you need it without thinking. That’s why repetition is so valuable because your body learns movement and your subconscious stores the sounds.

But, exactly what is the data you need to learn. Once you’ve convinced yourself that “how” you learn is important you still need to get the right information when it comes to harmony, chords, scales, choice of songs etc. What should you be looking for?

I’m a big believer in learning music not just notes. When I was younger the process of learning piano was all about notes. I learned to read music at an early age and learned how to play other people’s music by practicing their pieces over and over again. However, the only drawback to this type of learning is it’s not the most creative way to discover music. For example; imagine that for your entire life all you know how to do is play other people’s music by learning it from sheet music.

There is an entire side to music that many musicians do not get to discover and that’s the fundamental building blocks of music. Once learned, it becomes so much easier to play by earn, improvise and even compose. To me, this is the entire point to music. It’s easier to express your heart and soul when you’re using and understanding the entire palette of musical colors.

So, what goes into that palette? In my opinion scales are the most important aspect of music. Why? Because, out of scales comes melody and chords. Everything in music can be broken down into standards scales such as; major, minor and all of the modes like dorian, phrygian, mixolydian and so on.

Let’s take a simple example. Since everything is built from scales let’s use a C major Scale. The notes of a C major scale would be C D E F G A B. Simple enough right? Ok so how do we get chords out of that. Well, most western harmony is based on tertian harmony or intervals of 3. That means that if you take the first note of the scale which is C and create a chord by placing 3rd on top from the same scale the chord would be C E G making a simple major triad.

If you kept placing notes on top in 3rds the next note would be B. So, the chord would be C E G B making what we call a major 7th chord. If you continue in thirds the next notes would be D F A then arriving back at C. So the richest chord you could have by choosing just notes from the C major scale would be C E G B D F A. Yet, you can’t use F because it creates a tri-tone (minor 5th) against the B. Therefore the chord would be C E G B D A making a major 7th chord with a 9th and 13th as extensions. This chord is written like this C maj7 9 13.

Then, if you tried to do the same thing starting on D the chord you would end up with is D F A C E G B. You must remove the B because it creates a tri-tone with the F so the final chord would be D F A C E G which is called a D minor 7th chord with a 9th and 11th and is written like this; D min7 11.

If you kept doing this with all 7 notes of the scale that’s where your chords will come from. Take the chords from the scale then add a melody using the notes from the scale and you’ve got the building blocks of all western music.

While this may seem like a fairly simple explanation, it is. Music was never meant to be complicated but used as a way of expressing sentiment, emotional and happiness. Over complicating music just takes the fun out of it. So, the next time you decide to learn piano, find yourself some lessons that help you understand music from the inside out. Playing notes from a page will only take you so far. Understanding music will take you the rest of the way.

Do YOU Make THIS Killer Mistake? ITS or IT’S?

Of course you can’t tell the difference if you are listening to an audio book, but this is one of the most common mistakes that we all come across in the printed world every single day that we pick up a newspaper, magazine, etc. Of course this mistake is not evident when we speak, or when we listen to a downloaded audio book, for the simple reason that phonetically there is no difference between the two: the pronunciation is the same and therefore the actual mistake is undetectable.

And yet, in print, the mistake itself is a surefire proof that the writer does not know his/her grammar. Make this mistake when writing your CV, a job application, a newspaper or magazine article, and you immediately expose your ignorance of English grammar to the full glare of your judges who could be your future employers.

However, if there is some consolation for you here, it is (it’s) that the vast majority of people (even the highly educated ones) DO make this mistake — including copy writers in internet marketing who can charge anything between $1,000 and $20,000 for a sales letter.) So you are not entirely alone when you are in the company of such august writers.

The question is: why is it that so many people make this mistake? The answer has already been alluded to above — ignorance of how the English language works. So here we go: the difference between IT’S and ITS is really simple:

First, IT’S is in fact TWO words, the first one being IT; the second word is ‘S which is simply a shortened version of another word: IS. So IT’S actually stands for IT IS.

So whenever you want to say IT IS (it is warm, it is interesting, it is relevant), you write IT’S (it’s warm, it’s interesting, it’s relevant)

On the other hand, ITS is one word, and expresses possession (ownership). Something is owned (as in belonging to.) Example: if we talk about the tail of a dog (the tail belongs to the dog, we say: ITS tail. — Not “it’s” tail, as that would mean IT IS tail, which wouldn’t make sense. Here is (Here’s)another example: talking about a bicycle, you could say: its chain is broken (the chain that belongs to the bicycle is broken.)

On the other hand, hopefully without confusing you too much, I could say (talking about the chain): it’s broken (which stands for: IT IS broken)

Here are now a couple of examples that embody both versions:

Talking (or rather writing) about a car with rusted doors, you could say:

It’s a shame that its doors are rusted.

Talking (or rather writing) about an article that has a misleading conclusion, you could say:

I am of the opinion that it’s (= IT IS) badly written because its conclusion is unsound.

To recap:

1. IT’S stands for IT IS
2. ITS expresses ownership (something that belongs to IT)
3. ‘S stands for IS, the “‘” symbol just before the “S” is called an apostrophe and is used in front of a shortened word (the word “IS” in this case)

I hope the explanation of the difference between “its” and “it’s” is clear enough for you to make your writing that little bit more accurate, and that you will not be wasting your time asking yourself the question: now, is it: its or it’s?

Woman Holding a Balance

This painting represents a familiar everyday scene which Vermeer used to illustrate often in his works. It reminds of similar ‘Woman with the pearl necklace’ or ‘A young Woman holding a waterpitcher’, other Vermeer’s works.

On this canvas we see a woman caught in a room, busy with her everyday work. She is holding a balance in her right hand. In the darkened room we see a large painting hanging on wall, there is also a table. The window is covered partially by a curtain, although some light enters the room. In the first sight the painting has a mysterious atmosphere. We do not see exactly what the women is weighting and most of the room is concealed because of lack of light, only woman’s clothes and hands are brightly lighten, as if the author wants us to concentrate on that part. Light flows from a window, and washes across the wall, revealing a painting of the Last Judgment. This painting behind her symbolizes the weighing of souls after they are gone from this earth. The next item on the canvas that catches attention is the mirror in front of the women. It is reflecting her actions, her choice between the paths that life offers her. There are pearls and jewelry which could mean a very attractive time passing, but the woman is indecisive about it. She is trying to make up her mind if she wants a spiritual living or the material things which are represented by the pearls.

We can see that woman’s face is very calm and has a serene expression as if telling us that she probably will choose God’s path in life, especially taking into consideration the gloomy painting behind her. Her eyes, although it may seem, are not looking at the balance, her gaze is rather turned inward to her thoughts and inner spirit. This symbol again implies that the woman turns her existence to a divine side. Another symbolic meaning is carried by the light distribution on the picture. For instance, the background painting is hidden in the shadow, although still can be seen, meaning that while living people often do not consider the consequences of their lives, but nevertheless it does exist and it will come in the end. It leads us to conclusion that while here the women is making this decision about good and bad, having the thought of the “end” in her mind, she is thinking of eternal matters and is only concerned with them, as the light allocation hints.
The name of the painting itself, tells that the author suggests a balanced spiritual principle that is often manifest in Vermeer’s work: the need to lead a balanced life. Though Vermeer’s working methods remain a mystery to these days, it is clear that he constructed this composition with extreme care. If we mentally draw orthogonal lines through the woman’s finger from different sides of the painting, we will discover that Vermeer remained devoted to his philosophical views and even the composition of the canvas support it, as he keeps a perfect balance between the sections of the painting.

I would like to return to the light issues in this painting again as I think it is one of the most important elements which identify the major theme and focus of it. I believe that light not only means to attract attention to the hands, but also tells us that the women experiences some sort of spiritual enlightening, which gives her strengths and she feels God’s presence in her life. Probably that could explain her facial expression which reminds of Virgin Mary.
Vermeer maintained extraordinary control over his paints, he worked effectively with both dense impasto and thin glazes, which give a finishing shiny touch to the colors and have a better effect on the viewer, for instance when the author wants to emphasize dramatic black or contrasting unsullied yellow or white. The effect of soft light is achieved through delicate modulation in paint handling.

The overall impression of the painting is twofold. Initially it is seen as a gloomy picture of a sad woman stressed by all the shades and numerous darks spots on the canvas. The true understanding and real appreciation comes afterwards, when small details are discovered. One can find that this painting is genuine masterpiece with multiple meanings and a whole life story behind it. Only the author knows exactly what he meant when he portray wrote that canvas, but everyone looking at it can extract some universal truths from it, such as good vs. bad, material vs. spiritual, darkness and light, beauty and ugliness.

Papal Sin: Structure of Deceit

Pulitzer Prize winner Gary Wills, is one of America’s most highly praised Catholic journalists and authors, has recently published a criticizing work against his own church’s past and its present leadership. Wills’ thesis in the “Papal Sin: Structures of Deceit” (Doubleday) is that “the life of church authorities is lived within structures of deceit.” In his book Wills puts his extensive knowledge of St. Augustine, and church traditions, to work in depicting the “structures of deceit” which he claims are built into the Roman Catholic papacy. His main idea throughout the book is that every era of papal history has its own problematic issue. For instance the medieval papacy was obsessed by lust for political power, as the popes during Renaissance were consumed by greediness for treasures. Nowadays Wills argues the structural sin feature of the papacy is intellectual dishonesty.

Wills believes that the papal system is helpless in acknowledging their mistakes. This in turn forces the system’s defenders to dive into mental gymnastics to protect dogmas for which there are no really good arguments. Taking for example women who were excluded from the Catholic priesthood because of historic beliefs that women were ritually impure and because of superiority of men. It is clear that today it is impossible to appeal to such principles, so the defenders of this veto are forced to claim that because Jesus did not accept women, thus the church can not do it. The book describes the official positions on women’s ordination from the church and other issues such as contraception, the church’s role in the Holocaust and obligatory priestly celibacy. It argues that those concerns are imperfect in their intellectual integrity and insincere in their abuse of historical confirmation. Wills writes “a man condemns himself in his own eyes if he tries to claim that he agrees with it.” Such hidden conflict, the writer suggests, is an unappreciated reason behind current lack of priests.

The three main phases are the central focus of the book. In the first one author tries to show that the official Church has lied about its treatment of Jews and its assumed silence during the Holocaust. He implies that an organization able to lie about that could and might lie about anything. The author then speaks about alleged doctrinal dishonesties regular for Catholicism. Also he states that the concept of Truth itself is discredited by the truth-claims and power of the Church. The problem however occurs when we look closed at those claims, we might notice that those three subjects are not necessarily linked, and one does not prove the correctness of the other. To Wills, though a supposed Catholic anti-Semitism is born from the same root of untruth as the Vatican’s rejection of women’s ordination, its mandatory priestly celibacy, and “homophobia”, and its indisputable belief in papal infallibility.

Wills writes that Catholic Church was poisoned with anti-Jewish outlook for centuries. He turns to a 1928 decision by Pius XI to suppress a Catholic organization called the Friends of Israel. On its account the pope protested that the group did not take sufficient note of “the continual blindness of this people” and that its approach was “contrary to the sense and spirit the church, to the thought of the Holy Fathers and the liturgy.” Also Pius XI has distinguished between religious anti-Judaism, which was tolerated by the church, and its secular form, which was not. The book goes through a number of current critical issues within Catholicism. For instance the Vatican claims it cannot manage Communion to remarried divorcees, because that would compromise the truthfulness of sacrament founded by Christ. Wills however claims that for the first four centuries of church history, there was no concept of marriage as a punishment.

Another important issue discussed in the book concerns priesthood celibacy. Wills shows that there is no basis for celibacy and points out to the fact that there is nothing said in the New Testament to support the idea of blessing the bread and wine. He claims that there is no notion of a special order of priesthood in the New Testament except from the idea of the priesthood of all believers. The author continues on to the unpleasant topic of horrible consequences of celibacy. Research has proven that about twenty percent of priests are sexually active with women at any one time, and twenty percent of priests are homosexually active. As was said before that is where the problem of decreasing number of people applying for priesthood. The general phenomenon of emptying or already empty monasteries and nunneries is a concern for the author as well and he blames all those misfortunes on the Church’s believes pattern. Wills also discusses the terrible and widespread problem of pedophilia in the Roman Catholic Church. The way in which this trend has been developing and worsening in recent years is bad enough by itself, but it also has been covered up. The book survey showed that from 1983 to 1987 an average of one case a week was reported on the pedophilia issue, moreover every bishopric in America has been had a pedophilia case.

One more matter talked about in the book is contraception. In 1968 the papacy issued a unique letter on contraception which Wills describes as the most catastrophic document of the century.
