It is one of life’s small cruelties that the times when you need credit most badly, are also the times when lenders are least willing to give it to you. When you are finding it hard to meet your obligations, your car payments are behind, your credit cards are all fully loaded, and you’re barely meeting your rent or mortgage payments, your credit score takes a nose dive. Even if you are meeting all your payments, credit reporting companies can show lenders that you are at your limit, that you’re fully extended on all existing lines of credit, and you’ve been searching vigorously for more. This will be looked on very poorly by lenders and make them much less inclined to lend to you.

Between Jobs

One of the periods when you are most likely to be in this sort of situation is when you are between jobs. There are a million reasons why you might lose your job, many of which will not be your fault, and if you are unlucky enough to have this happen to you when you’re under heavy debt, then things can quickly get out of hand.

It may seem like stating the obvious, but the surest way to get out of this situation is to find a new job as soon as possible. In many cases you can be back to work within a month or two so if you have enough money to keep you afloat for this period you will be ok. However it is not always easy to find a new job quickly, especially if the reason you lost your original job is due to difficult conditions in your industry or area.

Insurance

The other thing you might consider is credit protection insurance. This is an insurance policy you will need to have taken out before you lost your job. If you did, there is a good chance you will be covered for exactly this situation. Most credit protection plans provide that if you lose your job through no fault if your own, they will kick in the meet your repayments for you, until you can get another job. They have many strict conditions, for example, they will probably expect you to accept the first job offer you get, even if it does not pay as well as your last job etc.

Alternatives

The other option is to borrow some money to tide you over till you get a new job. While it may seem unlikely that a lender will lend to a person who is out of employment, there are situations when they will lend to you. If you can demonstrate a good previous repayment record, and have very good prospects of finding a job soon, they may be willing to back you, especially if you have security such as your home to offer them. If you do opt for this route however, make sure you are very confident of finding employment before putting your home at risk.

Envision for a moment, doing what you truly love and getting paid for it. Having a hard time? Most people do, unfortunately, because they’ve been conditioned to think of work as something that’s unpleasant, but necessary.

These days, however, fulfilling your passion in the workplace is becoming more of a reality. What if you have a love of the outdoors? I have a friend who turned his passion for hiking and camping into a profitable summer business as an independent guide for week long hiking trips. Another friend of our family recently took her interest in health and fitness and used it to build her business as an independent trainer.

In their excellent book, Finding Your Perfect Work, Paul and Sarah Edwards give several examples of people who have taken their unique gifts and passions and turned them into a livelihood. For example, Bob Bell and Ted Seibert started their company, The Sand Castle, from a love of building sand castles. Of course, their sand castles don’t get washed away, because they build their two story castles in shopping malls, trade shows and fairs throughout the country. Stephen Yoke took his hobby of collecting miniature toy cars and turned it into a business selling them at car and toy shows. Within months of quitting his old job as real car salesman, he was bringing in over $200,000 in sales.

Human Resource Management theories focus on methods of recruitment and selection and highlight the advantages of interviews, general assessment and psychometric testing as employee selection processes. The recruitment process could be internal or external or could also be online and involves the stages of recruitment policies, advertising, job description, job application process, interviews, assessment, decision making, legislation selection and training (Korsten 2003, Jones et al, 2006). Examples of recruitment policies within healthcare sector and business or industrial sectors could provide insights on how recruitment policies are set and managerial objectives are defined. Successful recruitment methods include a thorough analysis of the job and the labor market conditions and interviews as well as psychometric tests to determine the potentialities of applicants. Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) also focus on interviews and assessment with emphasis on job analysis, emotional intelligence in new or inexperienced applicants and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Other techniques of selection that have been described include various types of interviews, in tray exercise, role play, group activity, etc.

Recruitment is almost central to any management process and failure in recruitment can create difficulties for any company including an adverse effect on its profitability and inappropriate levels of staffing or skills. Inadequate recruitment can lead to labor shortages, or problems in management decision making and the recruitment process could itself be improved by following management theories. The recruitment process could be improved in sophistication with Rodgers seven point plan, Munro-Frasers five-fold grading system, psychological tests, personal interviews, etc. Recommendations for specific and differentiated selection systems for different professions and specializations have been given. A new national selection system for psychiatrists, anesthetists and dental surgeons has been proposed within the UK health sector.

Recruitment is however not just a simple selection process and requires management decision making and extensive planning to employ the most suitable manpower. Competition among business organisations for recruiting the best potential has increased focus on innovation, and management decision making and the selectors aim to recruit only the best candidates who would suit the corporate culture, ethics and climate specific to the organisation (Terpstra, 1994). This would mean that the management would specifically look for potential candidates capable of team work as being a team player would be crucial in any junior management position. Human Management resource approaches within any business organisation are focused on meeting corporate objectives and realization of strategic plans through training of personnel to ultimately improve company performance and profits (Korsten, 2003). The process of recruitment does not however end with application and selection of the right people but involves maintaining and retaining the employees chosen. Despite a well drawn plan on recruitment and selection and involvement of qualified management team, recruitment processes followed by companies can face significant obstacles in implementation. Theories of HRM may provide insights on the best approaches to recruitment although companies will have to use their in house management skills to apply generic theories within specific organizational contexts.

Think of yourself as an already complete person who will be even happier with a satisfying career.

Of course there is nothing wrong with maintaining a great career that enhances your life. Nevertheless, it can’t be the only thing that makes you you. If you get into a rut and you’re feeling really down in the dumps, take some time off. Job Searching is a full-time job and like every other job, you will need a vacation now and then. Use your time to assess your situation. Figure out how to work smarter-not harder.

Take yourself seriously
Make smart decisions about ads and occupations that sound like a good match for you. It’s never good to put all your eggs in one basket, but make sure you’re using your time wisely. Think of your job search as research project. Set up goals, a plan of action, and a deadline in which you should be done with your project.

Have a place to report to everyday. It can get depressing sitting in your house day after day, especially if you’re not getting your desired results right away. Find a quiet place like a library where you can use all of your materials and concentrate on your goals.

It would be relatively easy at this point to list several work-at-home job opportunities and call this a finished article, but the reality of the 21st century workplace is that telecommuting and working from home are becoming more and more commonplace. And almost ANY job can be done from home now.

My recommendation to anyone who wants to switch to a work at home job is to talk with your current boss about whether or not you can be allowed to work from home. A broad minded boss with her finger on the pulse of the business realities today will understand that if she can’t accommodate your work from home request, then you’ll probably find someone else who will.

If that doesn’t work out, all you have to do is start looking for work. Any of the many get a job or find employment sites out there are going to have work from home jobs available as well as more traditional jobs. All you have to do is seek them out.

Another Look at Owning Your Own Business

But don’t rule out starting your own home based business either. Many people find this more satisfying than working for someone else, and they wind up making more money than they ever thought possible. That was my experience, and it was also my wife’s. The best work from home job is the one where you’re your own boss.

If you are interested in starting a work based from home business, but aren’t sure where to start, just follow these four work from home careers ideas to get you moving in the right direction.

Work from home careers idea #1: The Internet
If you are looking for work from home careers, you really don’t have to look much further than the Internet. A quick search on the internet and you will find literally hundreds of work from home careers to choose from. Among your choices are setting up your own Internet-based store and selling goods. Or, you can simply do as many have done and do your product selling through eBay.

With the Internet, you can even set up a website filled with interesting content and sit back and let the site make you money using Google ads and affiliate memberships. Or, become a member of the many survey sites on the Internet that pay people just for sharing their opinions on up-and-coming products. In addition, the Internet is the source of literally hundreds of freelance job opportunities for those with a skill, such as writing or web design, to offer.

Work from home careers idea #2: Fairs and Arts & Craft Shows
Fairs and arts & craft shows are an additional source of work from home careers. If you enjoy creating your own crafts, you can do it from the comfort of your home and then sell them at fairs and craft shows. Or, you can purchase wholesale goods and turn them over for a profit by selling them at these fairs and shows. If you do not have a family or other obligations keeping you firmly rooted, you can even travel to nearby states and take advantage of the many shows and fairs around you. You can certainly keep yourself very busy in that way.

Work from home careers idea #3: Consignment Shops
If you are not interested in traveling to sell your wares, you might want to look into consignment shops. With consignment shops, you don’t have to spend your time traveling to fairs and shows and you don’t have to wait for customers to come by. Although you will have to pay the shop owner a small percentage of your earnings, this can be well-worth it in the time and trouble it saves you.

Work from home careers idea #4: Filling a Need
When searching for work from home careers, the best thing you can do is look around you and determine what there is a need for. In other words, if you live in a bustling business district, there may be a need for someone capable of business writing or graphic design. Or, you might be able to really start a solid car wash business in this area, particularly if there are no or only a few car washes in the area. In addition, offering a twist to your car wash business that is not offered by other car washes such as the ability to take the person’s car while he or she is at work and getting it clean may set you apart from other car washes. At the same time, a car wash business may not be so successful in a small rural town where most people are more concerned about their tractors than their cars.

So do your research and select your work from home careercarefully before diving in.

Work/Life Balance Tips for the Business Traveler

Balance and the business traveler has everything to do with staying “connected”. As I indicate in my book, Work for a Living & Still Be Free to Live, we achieve a fluctuating balance by how we CHOOSE to stay connected with the critical areas of our life. Business travel can take a heavy emotional, physical and mental toll.

Let me suggest some ways to stay connected with these areas while “on the road”:

Emotional–staying connected with your home base and significant people. If you have children, depending upon their ages, consider the following: Take your child with you in your imagination. Ask them if they would select a SMALL toy of theirs that you could carry with you and so stay connected with them. Tape record a favorite story or a good night ritual which can be played before the child goes to sleep. With the child, track your travels on a map and together talk about some of the places or things of interest about your destination (lobsters in Maine; skyscrapers in NY, the lions at the Chicago Art Museum.) As an added bonus, you will have a new appreciation for the place where you’ll be.

–Send post cards home to each member of the family (make up labels in advance and buy stamps). You only need to write one personal line. Doesn’t matter that you’ll get home before the postcard. You thought of them.

–Leave love notes for your partner (under the pillow/ with the toothpaste/ on the bathroom mirror). My husband leaves a message with the hotel operator to deliver “Bill loves you most!” Operators really get a kick out of delivering this message

–Have a different e-mail address for family members and send home messages

–Take a blank book and fill it with favorite pictures of home, family, friends, pet. Always take the book with you on your travels. (I do!)

–If possible, make separate calls to your spouse and your children. That way, no one has to share “air time”.

Physical–staying connected with your body. Be THERE. Don’t keep two watch times. You’ll be tempted to say “But I can’t go to sleep now it’s only 7pm in CA. or “I can’t get up at 6:00–it’s only 3AM in CA.

–Plan time (it won’t just appear) for exercise of any kind. Bring shoes for running or walking. Bring exercise rubber bands for muscle tone. (Take up no room) Use stairs rather than elevator where possible.

–Bring any item which can easily make you “feel at home”. This can be anything from a pillow case, a teddy bear, a small picture.

–If it’s your style, bring herbal scents for the room; bath salts. One friend carries a device for drowning out sound. She turns it on and selects anything from ocean sounds to raindrops.

–Try a portable vaporizer. Clears sinuses and puts moisture back into the face.

–Bring saline solution nasal spray for the airlines. Also, a small atomizer of water (some kinds are mixed with aloe). Body tissues become very dehydrated on flights. Drink more water than you ever thought possible.

–Always ask for a room away from the elevator and the ice machine.

–Unless you have great stamina, avoid red eye flights. Much better to come in rested to do work than stumble your way through a meeting.

–Find luggage that works for you. Weight, size, length of shoulder strap.

–Lighten the load: if an extended trip, ship home materials or clothes you won’t need. Bring a pre-addressed packing slip. Concierge can help. Whenever possible, check your baggage. Carry only with you the necessities for work and personal hygiene and health. Wear clothes that could suit for your meeting should luggage not make it. There’s far too much carry-on these days.

Mental–staying connected with your psyche. Self- talk is powerful when traveling. Why become angry and upset at weather delays (over which no one can do anything)? Mechanical problems are a fact of life. If at all possible, never book yourself on the last flight to your destination. Always have a later flight. And if you can’t make it, consider that you have been given a gift of time.

–Use time in flight to get caught up on journals, periodicals, etc. For me, a successful trip is when my briefcase gets lighter and the pocket of the seat in front gets heavier.

–See your destination with new eyes. Consider that you are an explorer. Try something new: a restaurant, a neighborhood, a museum, even the note the difference of people.

–Keep a small journal and write observations. This also lets you bring home “more than work” to share with the home front.

–Start the day quiet. Meditate. Deep breathe. Allow enough time to get ready before you leave the hotel.

Lastly, expect the unexpected and let go of the outcome. Do what you can for contingencies. Bring a cell phone, essential numbers and don’t book the last flight out. Then relax into the uncertainty of travel. Stress comes from trying to control the uncontrollable.

Improve Your Incentive Based Programs

Creating an environment that exudes a corporate culture geared toward overachieving is key in any industry.

While it is easier to measure in some industries than in others, measuring and creating performance criteria in any business can be challenging. But it does not have to be that way.

Professional service firms, like all other companies, have key matrices that they operate under. These can be calculated at an overall corporate level, departmental levels and at individual position levels.

It is incumbent upon senior managers to identify, benchmark and track their firm’s key matrices. Once this is accomplished, not only can firm performance be measured daily, each employee and each department can be measured daily as well.

Given this data, it is possible to create incentive compensation programs designed around performance criteria–criteria that are specific, measurable and attainable. In this manner, each individual employee, department manager and company executive can have personal compensation and an incentive package geared toward meeting quotas and goals. They should also include excess profit based incentive programs.

The key to daily management of the overall organization and each individual department is the ability to track what is happening on a daily corporate flash report. If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it. The roots of measuring are the benchmarked key matrices. Utilization of this methodology provides firms with a real-time ability to hold both employees and overall departments accountable, not just at the end of a financial reporting period, but Improve your incentive based programs hourly or daily. The key to running a productivity-based organization that consistently outperforms its own lofty goals is designing performance and incentive plans that are constantly achieved by a few and realistically achievable by many. Constant and frequent reward wins the day.
