History And Purpose Of Education In The United States
Education of the Minorities By the late 19th century educational debates were still raging on “who was to be educated?” and “how this education was to be carried out?’ Such philosophers as John Dewey and (closer to us) Jean Piaget understood that “all knowledge has a social origin, and the interest of the child are the primary source of learning” (Spring, 1989). The same author said that after the Civil War black leaders, particularly W.E.Dubois and Booker T. Washington debated not the importance of schooling but the kind of education for the Negroes. Mr. Washington, considered by many as a traitor, would acquiesce with the 1895 Plessy v Ferguson decision that said under segregation schools can be separate and remain equal. According to Perkinson (1991), Washington addressed publicly in 1895:
“…The Negro did not want social equality,
that he did not need social equality with the whites.
Nor did he want or need political or civil equality…
but cooperation with their white friends.
Negro education should be devoted
to the practical education of earning a living…”
Conversely, Dubois vehemently rejected that position and argued for equal rights for the colored people. During that epoch, diverse segments of society had been restless protecting their interests after the inaction of Plessy v Fugerson. The US Supreme Court opined in many cases in favor of minorities. Among those cases, worth noting are Pierce v Society of Sisters (1922, unconstitutionality of establishing schools only) and Virginia State Board of Education v Barnette (1940, unconstitutionality of forcing Jehovah witnesses to salute the flag). None of them had delivered a more devastating blow to the then racist establishment than Brown v Board of Education of Topeka (1954).
The Brown decision invigorated the positions of minority leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King who had long said that the reality of equality will require extensive adjustments in the way of life of the white majority, an adjustment that many are unwilling to make. (Smith & Chunn,1989). Arguing that “segregated education is inherently unequal”, the young and flamboyant lawyer Thurgood Marshall (later US Supreme Court Justice), helped Brown open the valve to a flurry of other similar legislations in order to right the educational wrongs done to minorities. In fact, Perkinson (1991) noted that black parents realized that their children were failing in schools not because they were culturally deprived (as racist views had purported) but because schools were incompetent to teach black students who, indeed, had a culture, a different culture.
I believe that, to many folks, it was not a matter of how to educate our culturally different children, but a deliberate case of not willing to do so. In fact, Shor and Freire (1987), “It is not education which shapes society, but on the contrary, it is society who shapes education according to the interests of those in power. In contrast, Perkinson (1991) responded, “By 1965, the schools had polarized American society into self-satisfied whites and victimized blacks, into indifferent suburbanites and despondent city dwellers, and creating winners and losers. These two views collided on the root cause of the plight of the blacks. But both remained ferocious advocates of the rights of the downtrodden, including the children of the immigrants.

Do you have the right personality type to successfully run your own business?
It takes an entrepreneurial fire in your belly to start a business and make it succeed. Not everyone has it.
How do you know if you have what it takes to start a business? There’s really no way to know for sure. But I do find things in common among the emotional and family fabric of people ready to consider an entrepreneurial venture. You don’t have to fit all seven of these categories to be a good candidate for entrepreneurship. But it probably wouldn’t hurt. In general, the more you have in common with these characteristics, the closer you probably are to being ready to try going out on your own.
1. You come from a line of people who couldn’t work for someone else. I don’t mean that in a negative way. People who are successful at establishing their own business tend to have had parents who worked for themselves. It’s usually easier to get a job with a company than to start your own business; people who strike out on their own often have the direct example of a parent to look to.
2. You’re a lousy employee. No need to sugar-coat this one. People who start their own businesses tend to have been fired from or quit more than one job. I’m not saying you were laid off for lack of work or moved from one job to a better-paying one. You were asked to leave, or you quit before they could fire you. Think of it as the marketplace telling you that the only person who can effectively motivate and manage you is yourself.
3. You see more than one definition of “job security.” I am truly envious of the few people I know who have stayed with one employer for 25 or 30 years. They look very secure. But how many people do you know who are able to stay with one company for that long? In a rapidly changing economy, job security can be frighteningly fleeting.
4. You’ve gone as far as you can go, or you’re not going anywhere at all. Sometimes the motivation to start a new venture comes from having reached the top of the pile where you are, looking around, and saying, “What’s next?” Early success can be wonderful, but early retirement can sometimes drive energetic and motivated people totally crazy.
5. You’ve done the market research already. Don’t even talk to me about your great business idea if you haven’t put the time into figuring out if there’s a market for your product or service. As the people behind any number of failed Internet ventures will tell you, “cool” doesn’t necessarily translate into “profitable.” Don’t bother building it if you haven’t figured out whether there’s a good chance the customers will come.
6. You’ve got the support of your family. Starting a business is stressful under the best of circumstances. Trying to do it without the support of your spouse or other significant family members or friends would probably be unbearable.
7. You know you cannot do it alone. You might excel at promoting a business. Maybe you love running the financial end of the enterprise. You could be someone who starts a business because you have unique creative or technical know-how to create a product.
Any of the above is possible, but it’s unlikely that you are going to excel at all of these tasks — or at all of the tasks involved in running any business. Forget all that doing it alone stuff. You are going to need some help sometime.
The willingness to get that help — having employees, partners or consultants for those areas in which you are not an expert — is one indicator of likely future success. “No successful entrepreneur has ever succeeded alone,” development consultant Ernesto Sirolli writes in “Ripples From the Zambezi.” “The person who is most capable of enlisting the support of others is the most likely to succeed.”

How To Start A Career In The Computer Field
If you’re considering a career working in Information Technology – a fancy way of saying “working with computers” – congratulations! I can tell you from personal experience that it’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. I can also tell you from personal experience that it is never too late to begin!
I started my IT career 10 years ago, and it was a tough decision. I was 34 years old, and really knew next to nothing about computers. I decided to attend a technical school to get my career started, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Ten years later, I write ebooks and teach classes dealing with different facets of networking, I’ve earned the most difficult computer certification in the world, and I’ve never been happier. The same thing can happen for you.
As with any new venture, there are some things you have to watch out for, so I’m going to share my experiences with you in this new series of articles. I’ll tell you what worked for me, what didn’t work for me, and some tips and tricks on developing a fun, exciting, and financially rewarding career in Information Technology.
The first decision, and one of the biggest, is to decide what technical school to attend. If you think you can’t afford it, think again. Ask yourself this question: Can you afford not to go?
Almost every college and community college offers some kind of technical class, so look into those. For many of us, though, a technical college such as ITT or ECPI is a better bet. These colleges have more of a focus on technology, and can also help with job placement.
What you should beware with some technical schools is an unrealistic emphasis on how much money you’re going to make when you graduate. Some schools are fond of mentioning the MCSE Salary Survey, making it sound like you’re going to make $65,000 or more in your first IT job. I’m not saying that can’t happen, but it’s not very realistic for your first job. When you visit a school you’re thinking of attending, ask to speak to someone in the job placement department and ask them point-blank where they’ve recently placed graduates and the salaries at which they were hired.
Find out how many of the classes include hands-on labs. This should be close or at 100%. The only real way to learn about software such as Microsoft Server, or any computer hardware, is to really work with it. Just reading about it isn’t enough. Believe it or not, computer hardware and software doesn’t always work the way the books say it will!
You should also ask the school if any of their courses include preparing for computer certification exams. Professional certifications such as the CCNA, Network+, Security+, A+, and MCSE can be a huge boost to your career and your salary. We’ll talk more about that in the next installment of this series. In the meantime, stop dreaming about a computer career and start planning on how to make it happen!
Some facts concerning the treatment of dermatitis
There exist a few types of dermatitis, and the treatment varies, depending on the cause.
In contact dermatitis is important to determine what caused the irritation, and to avoid that factor. Helping in relieving redness and itching can be creams containing hydrocortisone or wet dressings that provide moisture to the skin.
Neurodermatitis treatment has as purposes to stop scratching and to avoid further aggravating your skin. You will have to wear a dressing that’s difficult to remove and leave it on for a week or longer. You can use sedatives and tranquilizers to help you stop scratching (but only the doctor will determine which drugs you can use); wet compresses can provide relief, and hydrocortisone lotions and creams may help soothe your skin.
Frequently shampoo use is needed in seborrheic dermatitis, and then you will have to carefully rinse your scalp. Tar, zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid or ketoconazole is the active ingredient of the commonly used shampoos.
In atopic dermatitis, applying hydrocortisone- containing lotions is needed to ease signs and symptoms. Wet dressings with mildly astringent properties may be prescribed if the skin cracks open. These wet dressings will contract your skin, reduce secretions and prevent infection. To help maintain normal skin texture and reduce flares of atopic dermatitis there can be used tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, which belong to a class of medications called immunomodulators. However, these drugs should be used only when other treatment fails.
In statis dermatitis, there accumulates fluid in the legs or ankles for extended periods, and the treatment consists in correcting this. Wearing elastic support hose or even having varicose vein surgery may be needed.
Also, to soften the thickened, yet fragile, skin and to control infection, there can be used wet dressings.
Perioral dermatitis has a treatment which consists in the oral antibiotic tetracycline. In the initial phase, in order to reduce signs and symptoms of perioral dermatitis, there can be prescribed a very mild corticosteroid cream.
To prevent contact dermatitis it is necessary to avoid coming into contact with substances like poison ivy or harsh soaps.
To prevent future bouts of dermatitis it is important to avoid dry skin. Try to have a bath less frequently, use mild soaps, brush your skin rapidly with the palms of your hands or gently pat your skin dry with a towel after bathing. It is also important to moisturize your skin.

Prepare & Practice to Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking
Public speaking is one of the most common fears around. Ironically, public speaking is a mandatory task for career success and social advancement (through networking or charity work). Even getting together with a group of people for after-work drinks can be viewed by some as a presentation! There are so many situations in life that call for public speaking… and so many benefits to successfully delivering a quality presentation.
So, if you want to advance in your career, or be an active member of a local club or organization, how do you calm those nerves, keep your heart from leaping out of your chest, and keep the audience glued to your words? How do you conquer the fear of public speaking?
OVERCOME YOUR FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING WITH PREPARATION One of the secrets is to prepare. Even if you aren’t aware of an opportunity in which you’ll be speaking, it’s a good idea to have a couple standard presentations on the tip of your tongue. For example, imagine a typical business situation you might be in (for example, a sales conference or a meeting) and put together a simple presentation of who you are, what you do, and how your work contributes to your customers’ success and your company’s bottom line. This is a good general presentation to use in work situations and can be easily modified “on the fly” for situations where some of the information may be irrelevant to the audience you’re speaking to.
Result? Imagine this: you’re sitting in a sales meeting and someone announces that they are going to call you up to the front to discuss your department’s recent success on a project. Rather than bolting for the door or declining the opportunity, you can stand confidently and stride to the front. You may not have been aware that you’d be speaking, but you are prepared with (at least) a majority of your speech already. Deliver it and add a line or two as appropriate (which will come easily once you’ve confidently delivered your prepared speech).
OVERCOME YOUR FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING WITH PRACTICE Prepare a typical speech and be sure to practice it regularly: several times a day for a month until it can be delivered with ease. Then scale back to once or twice a day after that. Soon it will be an automatic skill you’ll possess!
But don’t stop there. You can overcome your fear of public speaking in other situations, too, with additional speeches for the aspects of your life. Are you involved in a local charitable organization? Put together a speech for that situation, including what the charity does and what your role is.
And don’t forget that many other parts of life also call on us to “present”, even if we’re not behind a microphone. Perhaps you are in the market for a job, or you’re dating, or you have an active social life, or you’ve just moved and are meeting new people.
Think of every situation in which you might have a typical response and prepare that response ahead of time. With preparation, you can easily overcome your fear of public speaking.

How to Care for Your Bufo Alvarius Toad
The Bufo Alvarius toad can live for quite a long time in captivity. The Sonoran Desert toad, in general, lives for five to fifteen years, but one toad lived to 36, although it was not a Bufo Alvarius. But if you have gone to all the trouble of searching the Sonoran Desert to find them, or have purchased either a single or a pair of Bufo Alvarius toads from a reputable source, such as Bouncing Bear Botanicals, you will surely want to give it or them proper care so they will live a long time and give you many years of pleasure.
The first care tip is handling. You should handle your toad as little as possible, and, especially if you have other pets in your home, always wash your hands both prior to and subsequent to touching your toad. This is because the skin of an amphibian is permeable, which is to say it is porous, and any toxic substances on your hands may easily be absorbed into their bloodstream. The reason why you should always wash your hands after touching the toad is because of the venom glands located on their head and legs. The toad venom has a milky appearance, and it may be sufficiently toxic to kill a small cat or dog. It can also cause serious irritation to eyes and nose, so make sure never to touch your face until after your hands have been cleaned.
Toads are sensitive to light, sound and vibrations, so their housing should be kept in a quiet place where there is not a lot of noise and goings-on. Never put their aquarium on top of a stereo speaker or TV set, or even near them, because the vibrations are not good for them. Toads are nocturnal animals. They rest in the day time and come out at night, so the place where you house your Bufo Alvarius toad should not be too brightly lit.
Probably the best place to keep your toads would be in an aquarium of a twenty gallon size or larger. These toads are very large and they are excellent at jumping, so make sure their aquarium has a cover that fits snugly. During the day, they like to burrow into the ground to conceal themselves, so the aquarium should have a floor made not with soil but with chunks of bark, smooth stones that are too big for them to swallow, peat moss or sphagnum moss that has been dried. These are cold-blooded animals, which means their body temperature comes from their environment, so keep your Bufo Alvarius in a place where the temperature ranges from 24 to 27 C or 75 to 80 F. Their living space should not be wet, but they do need a bowl of non-chlorinated water. They don’t drink the water, but they immerse themselves in it, absorbing it through their skin.
Feeding your pet toad should not be too problematic if you live in an area where there are lots of insects such as crickets, or at least a pet shop that sells them. In the wild, they eat anything from small rodents and fish to bees, wasps and scorpions. These Colorado River toads even eat smaller frogs and toads.
If you keep your toad’s accommodations clean and comfortable, and take proper steps to look after them, you should be able to enjoy the company of your Bufo Alvarius for many years.
Online Psychology Programs
The growth rate for employment as a psychologist is above average due to an increased demand for these services in hospitals, schools, mental health centers, social service agencies, consulting firms and substance abuse clinics. Further, the average earnings enjoyed by industrial-organizational psychologists as of 2004 were $71,400. Online psychology programs give people the opportunity to study for a career in this challenging, rapidly growing field without compromising their other daily activities.
Students pursuing psychology online degrees learn about the human mind and behavior and its biological, social and cognitive bases, as well how to apply this knowledge to practical problems. Student enrolled in online psychology programs can choose to specialize in areas of psychology such as educational, child, clinical, sport, forensic, industrial, organizational, social and marriage and family therapy. The U.S Department of Labor reports that four out of ten psychologists are self-employed. The remaining psychologists work at places such as public and private schools, hospitals, state and federal government, correctional institutions, market research firms, advertising agencies, day care centers, mental health care providers and PR firms.
Dynamic positions held by psychology graduates include media buyer, copywriter, art therapist, retail buyer, teacher, child welfare caseworker and public relations specialist. A wide variety of exciting employment options exist for students who earn psychology degrees online.
In order to work as a psychologist, students must fulfill the required course of education, usually a doctorate, then complete an internship and gain one to two years of professional experience. Sometimes psychology students are also required to complete a thesis or original research paper. At this point, the student can take the application state licensing qualifying examination to become a psychologist. Most of the state licensing boards give a standardized test, but requirements vary from state to state. Some states also require continuing education to renew a psychology license.
Online psychology programs make it easy for busy professionals to fit continuing education requirements into their hectic schedules. Doctoral training programs in counseling, school and clinical psychology are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the National Association of School Psychologists are also involved with accreditation of school psychology advanced degree programs. It typically takes students five to eight years to complete psychology online degrees.
In 2004, psychologists held approximately 179,000 jobs. With the variety of interesting employment opportunities that exist in the psychology field today, online psychology programs afford students a chance for career advancement while they balance their work and family responsibilities.
SUMMARY: Students pursuing psychology online degrees learn about the human mind and behavior and its biological, social and cognitive bases, as well how to apply this knowledge to practical problems. Student enrolled in online psychology programs can choose to specialize in areas of psychology such as educational, child, clinical, sport, forensic, industrial, organizational, social and marriage and family therapy. Apartments for students – the highlight of college experience.
We prepare our whole life for the college experience. We are eager to grow up and have a little independence. After all, what can be more exciting than living with your friends and having tons of fun? Unfortunately, there is more to the whole college experience than fun.
Finding accommodations can prove to be quite difficult and this way more and more brokers, not to mention property management organizations specialize in renting and leasing apartments for students. Still, the first option for a freshman is to live on campus. It is close and he/she can be on time for classes but there are many other things to be taken into account. Residing on campus includes a meal plan which can be overpriced sometimes. Furthermore, the student must eat at certain times of the day and there is not much selection of a meal choice. Before choosing to live on campus, one must inquire about the meal plan, flexibility and other options.
A fairly good alternative to residing in campus are the apartments for students. Situated at convenient locations, there are many comfortable apartments for students out there. The easy access is a plus and there are many offers for rent or lease.
When inquiring about apartments for students, one must also ask about the kind of rent meaning short/long term and the monthly rate depending on the facilities. These accommodations provide a multitude of residing options from dormitories to condominiums. Sometimes, one may find duplexes for rent. The market is rich and many agencies advertise for fully furnished suits and brokers are prepared to assist you in finding the ideal accommodation for a student.
Apartments for students come with a telephone, basic cable TV service and Internet access. Of course, facilities vary from apartment to apartment. You may even encounter buildings equipped with study or fitness centers, fully equipped kitchens and private pools. Additional features include the panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The most important thing about these apartments for students is that there are within easy access to shopping malls, recreation centers and stylish restaurants. This is what students are looking for, proximity to fun and living in such apartments can be only comfortable.
Houses that rent apartments are another option for finding students accommodations. Even if they are school-owned or if a family will be residing with you, they are one of the best options out there. If we are talking about school-owned houses that rent apartments the advantages are awesome: the meal plan is not mandatory but optional, they are much more comfortable than a dorm room and are generally very close to school.
Some students even get scholarships or subsidies in order to pay for their residence. This is why they prefer to choose houses that rent apartments with a family residing. By doing household chores such as taking out the garbage or babysitting one can decrease the rent and enjoy home-cooked meals. The only slight disadvantage is that one can’t have his/her friends all day hanging and partying.
It is also possible to find houses that rent apartments online. There is a lot of information available about this kind of properties online. One can find all kinds of accommodations by going online from low budget accommodations to luxury places.
If a student wants to locate houses that rent apartments he can also choose to talk with a real estate agent, who will be more than willing to assist him in making the proper arrangements. He will talk with the owner; discuss property details, price rent, facilities included and other features. Sometimes, it may help to work with an agent as it will show you are serious about residing in one of the houses that rent apartments.

Back to School – Is It For You?
A number of years ago I took the plunge and went back to college to complete a night-time degree. While it is good to have the qualification and it was certainly beneficial to me in my career, that road is fraught with difficulties and it is not one that any potential student should take lightly.
Study of any kind, done properly, is time-consuming. Much of the first and second years of my own course involved organising my life around my studies. With many lives taken up with families and careers, managing the study becomes yet another task in your life.
Before signing up for a course there are some important issues to consider.
Take your time deciding what you want or need to do.
Signing up to a flower-arranging or a woodworking class for 10 weeks is an easy decision but a 3 or 4 year course needs careful thought. Make sure it’s something you are really interested in. Why do you want to do it? Is it for work, pleasure or some other reason?
Be Realistic
Look closely at the course you want to do. There is really no point in taking on an engineering degree if you have always hated maths.
Do you think you will be up to the challenge?
Do you have the basic abilities to do this course?
What other course might better match your abilities and interests?
Look at the limitations of your time
For those with families and other outside commitments this is essential. Consider how often you need to go, the outside work – the homework and any other projects. How much time will they take up? Will you actually have the time to do it?
Think of the possible effect on family and those closest to you
The family and those we spend our lives with, need reminders that we haven’t forgotten them. The study is about them as well, as they are affected. They will need attention, maybe a bit more than usual as you focus on your studies.
Look after your health
For many people stress can be a big problem particularly as they have probably been out of education for a very long time. They worry about assignments and other projects. They fret about their ability. They also have much longer days due to the classes. Consequently there is a need to look after your health a little more, with exercise, good food and enough sleep and all those other recommendations health professionals give us.
Is it worth it? Yes I think so. There is a great sense of achievement and it clearly shows that we can take on study at any time in our lives, once we have the will and the time.
Audio conferencing provides a way for businesses and other groups to interact, without having to travel to each other’s offices. The savings in time and travel expenses quickly make up for the cost of audio conferencing services and equipment. Audio conferencing usually involves other types of teleconferencing technology, such as video and collaborative software. Collaborative software is software that one user may send to other users for simultaneous viewing and modification. For example, if the group wants to work on a diagram, it can be seen and drawn upon by anybody in the conference via a special electronic whiteboard.
An audio conferencing system can be rented, bought from a vendor or reseller, or hired as part of a full audio conferencing solution. Such full-service packages include human support services like management, marketing, and tech support.
When audio conferencing services are rented, the communication is routed through the vendor’s server software. The client is charged according to the number of users or “seats” who will be participating, the length of time each seat will be participating, and any initial equipment rental or purchase costs. The vendor can charge a per-seat and per-minute fee (for example, $0.15/seat/minute). Alternatively, a client can rent the service by the week, month, or year, with a maximum allowed number of seats per conference or session. For example, a one-week service for five seats could cost $100 a week, while a one-year service for 100 people could cost a few thousand dollars. Rental audio conferencing services are best for small to medium sized businesses where the initial equipment purchase costs would far outweigh the savings on travel.
When audio conferencing services are bought, the communication is routed through the client’s server software, which is bought and licensed from the vendor. The client chooses how small or large a package he or she wants. For example, the client can buy software that allows for 100 seats, 1000 seats, or much more. The client can decide whether to include any of a number of high-tech add-ons such as whiteboard capabilities, and whether expandability is important. The client buys all the necessary equipment and software to run the system. The initial cost can be tens of thousands of dollars, so these are best suited to larger numbers of seats over the long term. However, tech support will always be a necessity, so the client should subscribe to the vendor’s expertise.
Audio Conferencing Info provides detailed information about audio conferencing services, equipment, software, companies, plus online audio conferencing, and more. Audio Conferencing Info is affiliated with Original Content.
Internal Analysis
The entire business world today has become more flexile in terms of operations and communication with in both business-to-business atmosphere and in customer relations. The major influence that caused these changes came from technological breakthroughs, more of which are emerging every year. For the Intel corporation which is the manufacturer of microprocessors and an innovator of new technologies the application of modern IT approaches has solved many problems. Although Intel is a leader in the microprocessor industry it still has to reorganize its internal and external operations in order to attract and retain its customers. Moreover Intel has to make business procedures as easy as possible for the partners and in doing so the company has to use the Web to improve their current position. In order to facilitate positive changes Intel has adopted a different technological approach to its value chain operations, the analysis of which will show exactly what has helped the constructive changes to happen.
One of the basic elements of value chain is the inbound logistics which is responsible for such operations as materials control and how well does it work, type of inventory system control and its effectiveness, and warehousing of the materials. Intel has adopted a system that works through the Net and analyses the direct supply purchases, meaning all the materials and equipment the company needs to make chips and components are managed instantly. The company is currently doing about 90% of inventory supply/control in this manner however management will only be satisfied when all of the supply purchases are communicated in this way. Another innovation that has helped Intel to reduce time of processing needed information from the suppliers was the implementation of online access to confidential engineering and product-specification documents. This simplification lead to reduction of the amount of time the suppliers needed to find out what exactly the company required and how fast it should be done. This system of secure Web downloads help to cut the amount of time needed to transfer confidential documents from two to three weeks to only 30 minutes. A sufficient number of Intel suppliers also use the Net to check the inventory levels and make estimations about needed components, times of delivery and status of payments. As seen, Intel has shortened the distance between itself and suppliers to a minimum, which resulted in a more efficient manufacturing process, cost reduction and thus more value added to the final product.
Another element of value chain is the operations itself which consist of productive equipment, production control system and automation level used in production process. It is understandable that Intel has the best equipment as the company itself is the manufacturer of the parts of equipment. The RosettaNet is a new system of business process standards used in conjunction with XML forms which is a core of technology that allows Intel to build more competent links with its suppliers and customers. It is a set of standards for business processes that enables Intel which uses diverse and often conflicting systems to exchange documents and data over the Internet. thus RosettaNet is of growing importance to manufacturing companies such as Intel and its suppliers that want to do business via Net. Intel that has changed from Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems to RosettaNet which allowed it to improve productivity levels, combined with efficient inventory it results in overall production growth.
But Will You Even Be ABLE to Retire?
Everybody envisions the golden years as a time to relax away from the stresses and strains of working life, but for for many baby boomers it may be a far different picture.
The majority of boomers’ health is better than is their financial health. Many might be falsely assuming they will be fit enough to work past age 65. Plus, there is always the looming spectre of long term care.
At 56, Lana Linder knows her savings aren’t enough to enable her to retire in her 60s. So she is counting on being strong enough to keep on working past retirement age, and now is the time for her to do her long term care insurance planning. Now, Linder is a very fit woman. A former professional dancer, she discovered weight training at the age 50, and she regularly goes to a gym to build muscle.
“I got pretty serious about it when I was 50, and I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror,” the freelance filmmaker said. “Once I met a personal trainer who made a custom program for me, I began to see dramatic improvements in my body.”
In a perfect world, Linder would also see dramatic improvements in her savings. But as a freelancer who has always worked in the arts – first theatre, then dance and now film – financial planning wasn’t always her priority. At 57, she knows her savings portfolio isn’t healthy enough to enable her to retire in her mid-60s.
“I wouldn’t consider retiring even if I had the money to do so,” she said. “I love what I do, and I hope to be able to do it forever.”
But she’d also like not to worry about her retirement finances.
Linder falls into the same category as 67 per cent of working respondents who told a poll for Investor Group that their health is better than their finances. They may be fit now, but this segment of the population is in no condition to retire, according to the survey. And many said they’d have to rely on good health to allow them to work past retirement age.
The Investor Group poll is typical of the kind of marketing being done by financial services companies world wide. Surveys suggest boomers are financially unprepared for retirement, and advertising designed to alarm them into stashing cash is a far cry from advertising of the 1980s, which depicted fit 50-somethings frolicking on tropical beaches in retirement.
Nowadays, the message is more about whether aging boomers are financially prepared for retirement at all, or if they will be forced to spend those twilight years flipping burgers and working as store greeters.
In another survey, 37 per cent of respondents predicted they will not be able to enjoy their current standard of living in 10 years. The question is, “Can you afford to go to the movies in 2017?”
What is most alarming is the baby boomers’ lack of planning for is long term care, and this is planning that must be initiated early enough to take advantage of good health and lower insurance rates.
Online MBA Programs
The United States Department of Labor has found that people who hold a master’s degree actually earn eighteen percent more per week than people who do not have one. The annual report regarding the state of online education in the United States, In Growing by Degrees: Online Education in the United States, 2005, it was reported that 44 percent of schools that offer master’s degree programs in person also offer online master’s degree programs. The convenience of distance learning master’s degree programs makes it easier for working professionals to pursue higher education without compromising their current position.
The United States Department of Education found that over 75 accredited colleges offer MBA education online. Virtual classrooms provide literally hundred of options for graduate students to select from in areas such as science, arts, fine arts, accounting, real estate, education, finance, business administration and more.
Distance learning master’s degree programs require students to hold a bachelor’s degree and dedicate the greater portion of their time to studying independently. The possible curriculum of online master’s degree programs may be delivered through email, virtual lectures, reading assignments, online chats and writing assignments. Some online graduate education programs may require students to physically attend a certain number of courses or workshops to earn residency hours. Testing for online master’s degree programs is frequently done through proctors right in the student’s neighborhood. To help finance their education, students can pursue federal and state financial aid, loans, scholarships and employer tuition reimbursement programs. Students traditionally attend thirty to sixty semester hours to complete a master’s degree, which can be done online in fifteen to thirty-six months.
Master’s degrees are differentiated by post-nominal letters that show the level of academic achievement a student has earned. The most common areas of master’s degree education are Master of Education (MEd, MAT, MSEd), Master of Science (MS), Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA). MBA education online programs allow busy business executives to conveniently fit advanced learning into their schedules. Further, one in five students studying to earn a master’s degree pursues an MBA, proving that MBA education online affords more people the chance to achieve higher learning.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, those people who hold a master’s degree enjoy salaries that are $200 higher than those people who hold a bachelor’s degree. Distance learning master’s degree programs enable more people to pursue the dream of higher education without compromising their current circumstances.

A Powerful Teaching Tip
One of the most effective classroom management strategies a teacher can use is also the strategy that teachers are most skeptical of.
Why?
I’m not sure…
This simple teaching strategy has a positive impact on the student-teacher relationship and greatly reduces classroom management issues and behavior problems.
Of course, there is more than a slight connection between the teacher-student relationship and classroom management.
So what’s this simple teaching tip?
Teachers need to give their students a break…
That’s right an actual 2-3 minute break during class.
Now many teachers may say that there is no way they can give a 2-3 minute break in the middle of their 50-minute class when they are already so pressed for time. To those teachers I say, “I am willing to give a 2-minute break to get the other 48 minutes back.”
The fact is, if you give a 2-minute break you can get so much more out of the rest of class.
Of course, you must teach this procedure just like you must teach every procedure (teach the students exactly how much time they have, what they can do and can not do, and exactly what you expect of them when the timer signals that break-time is over.)
I promise you, if you do this right you will be amazed at the results. I use this teaching strategy with my own 8th grade social studies classes and I can honestly say that when that timer signals that their break is over…you’ve never seen 14 year-olds get back in their seats and ready to work faster.
Break-time for students is truly a powerful teaching tip! However, like all the teaching tips I suggest, I can not make you try it…only you can do that…
Along with teaching middle school social studies full-time, I also teach a course on classroom management as an adjunct professor at a local college. Recently, one of my college students confided in me that she thought I was absolutely nuts to suggest she give her 7th grade math students a break during class time.
But, she decided to have an open mind and gave it a try. This is the difference between an effective teacher and an ineffective teacher. The effective teacher is willing to take risks.
Needless to say the student was thrilled with the results. She set a timer, gave her students specific directions, and when that timer went off signaling their break was over, those students got right back in their seats, were refreshed, and motivated to learn.
Giving students a break during class time does not only aide in classroom management, but it also contributes to building on that critical teacher-student relationship.
Eco and Organic Schools
To reduce climate change we need both adults and children to become greener and to think more about the environment. The question is how do we engage children and pull them away from the TV and Play station and promote a sense of citizenship and environmental responsibility in them?
Companies often have environmental policies where they recycle waster paper, ink cartridges and have energy saving stickers at the switches to remind people to switch off the lights. Companies are also increasingly becoming Fairtrade Workplaces by making a commitment to only buy Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar. But this is for adults, what about the children?
Well, the Eco-Schools Programme enables schools to become a more stimulating place in which to learn about eco issues and the schools themselves will be able to reduce their environmental impact within the school itself and the wider community including their own homes.
Once registered the school will be part of an international group of schools working towards education for sustainable development and a better quality of life for local and global communities. This global development perspective will enable them to better understand poverty and appreciate the work that Live Aid and international charities such as Oxfam and the Red Cross are doing.
The Eco-Schools programme provides a simple framework to enable schools to analyze its operations and become more sustainable. A bit like business re-engineering in companies but in manageable bite size chunks.
Pupil involvement is a key part of the Eco-Schools programme. Having pupils engaged in the whole process, including monitoring, action planning and decision-making, leads to genuine ownership of the programme and an increase in their sense of responsibility for the school environment and local area.
There is also an award scheme that will raise the profile of the school in the wider community and provide an incentive to participate. Schools can also be featured in local and regional media when they reach award level.
There are three award levels:
• Bronze award – self-assessed via website leading to a certificate
• Silver award – self-assessed via website leading to a certificate
• Green Flag – externally assessed leading to a certificate and flag
Eco-Schools is run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It is administered by ENCAMS in England and Tidy Northern Ireland in Northern Ireland. Eco-Schools are supported by a wide variety of partners.
Organic Issues
If the school also wants to learn about organic issues then the Soil Association is encouraging the use of organic and local produce in school meals by running a Food for Life workshop at interested schools. It is a one day workshop for key stage two pupils. It is run by the Soil Associations education department. The workshop provides children with an opportunity to consider healthy eating, local and organic food through the theme of choices.
Schools also need information on good practice when sourcing healthy food for school meals. Schools can further improve childrens diets and increase their understanding of food by means of farm visits, and classroom activities. Wouldnt it be wonderful if all schools could have gardens so that kids can see that food doesnt come just from packets or appear miraculously in shops?
Does Dynamometer Testing Damage The Car?
There is no actual proof that dynamometer testing might damage the car in any certain way.
While performing tests, dynos don’t interfere with the engines performance and more importantly, don’t do any damage to it. Some of the things that may cause damage to engines are over-revving, excessive heating, shock loading or incorrect fuel or ignition settings. If however your engine malfunctions after performing a dynamometer test, it’s almost certain that the testing, if properly done, wasn’t the cause of the damage.
It is more likely to damage your engine when you drive your car on the road than when you test it by the means of a dynamometer under controlled artificial conditions. You should always make sure that the dyno operator is a trained professional and that the dynamometer has an appropriate cooling system. A 60 centimeter diameter fan is appropriate for a power run. It will prevent the vehicle from overheating.
However, you should keep in mind that dynamometer testing and setting up race cars and bikes require more controlled testing conditions. A bike or car that heats up after a few hours testing suffers from heat soak into the transmission, bodywork, engine block, oil, and so on. This interferes with the amount of power produced, and influences the accuracy and the objectivity of the performance test. To make sure everything will go smoothly while performing your tests on engines, you actually need a wind tunnel in which you should manipulate your dynamometer. When you are driving on the road at full power there is a lot of fresh air that surrounds and cools the entire vehicle, and you should do your best to recreate some of these natural conditions when you perform your tests.
If your dynamometer or the place you go to in order to get your car or bike dyno tested does not have suitable working conditions or lacks an appropriate cooling system, it is not advised to perform any tests. The problem concerning the damage done by dynamometers on the tires is more debatable. Tire manufacturers recommend dynamometer owners to replace tires after every test performed. They claim that the tires design is not intended for purposes like dynamometer testing and say that the heat or tire deformation could damage the interior structure. Due to these facts, they strongly recommend replacing the tires after testing.
However, this should be done more as a precaution, and if the tires are rather new, well designed dynamometers should not damage them. Just to make sure that everything is in order, remember to always check the tires condition after every test you perform.
Unclear writing is a barrier to communication
We live in a communication age, yet a surprising number of people don’t know how to effectively use the basic vehicle of communication, the written word. Too often we throw up barriers to communication in our written messages, without even realizing it.
Anything that comes between the writer and the reader’s mind is a barrier to communication and should be eliminated. There are three broad categories of these barriers:
Incorrect grammar
English grammar is logical. In fact, if we make grammatical mistakes we can easily change the meaning of what we say. There is a difference, for example, between these two sentences:
“The copywriters, who handled the client newsletters, were an asset to the firm.” “The copywriters who handled the client newsletters were an asset to the firm.”
The insertion of a pair of commas in the first sentence tells us that all the copywriters handled the client newsletters and so all were an asset to the firm. In the second, only some handled the client newsletters, and they were the ones who were an asset to the firm.
Which of the following two sentences is correct?
“Mary likes John more than me.” “Mary likes John more than I.”
Whichever one you chose, you are right! Both sentences are grammatically correct, but they have different meanings. The first means Mary likes John more than she likes me, whereas the second tells me Mary likes John more than I like John.
Grammar is important to meaning, and we ignore it at our peril.
Long, rambling sentences
A law firm engaged in writing a new brochure asked the partners for their ideas. The memo from one partner contained this sentence:
A threshold issue, in my view, is whether our marketing information should be used to simply describe what we are and, therefore, preserve the status quo or rather, to describe where we want to be and what we want to be within the reality of who we are and thereby, hopefully, create new opportunities.
Wha-at? A sentence with 54 words is rarely clear, as this one illustrates. When you write a long sentence, try breaking it into two or more short sentences and see if it becomes clearer. But some sentences, like this one, are a lost cause! I have no idea what the writer meant, and I’m sure the intended reader didn’t either. (This is why non-marketing professionals shouldn’t write brochures!)
Inappropriate use of jargon
Imagine a cocktail party conversation among a doctor, a lawyer, a banker, a plumber and a rock musician, all using their own professional jargon. Nobody would understand anybody else! Yet that is exactly what many of us do every day when we use jargon to write to people outside our professions.
Never assume people will understand your jargon, your special language. Next time you are tempted to use “insider” words, ask yourself if they will really mean anything to this particular audience. Jargon-filled messages won’t even be read, let alone understood and acted on.
Assaults on Teachers on Rise in Allegheny County … Pittsburgh Schools Still Fairing Well with Plans to Do Even Better
A recent review indicates that assaults on teachers by students while on the job are on the rise in Allegheny County, which includes the Pittsburgh schools. Though the student population is declining within the county, there were 179 assaults on teachers last year, according to the Allegheny County Juvenile Probation Department. This is the highest in history for the county, with a total of 621 cases from 2002 through 2006.
The Pittsburgh schools have three open teacher claims for worker’s compensation, related to assaults by students. One claim is from a 1997 injury, where a student threw an object and struck a teacher in the neck. Another claim from 2005 resulted from a Pittsburgh schools’ teacher-student confrontation on a staircase. The Pittsburgh schools’ teacher incurred back and shoulder injuries by grabbing the staircase rail to prevent falling down the stairs. The third claim occurred in 2006, when a teacher tried to break up a student fight and incurred a neck injury.
The review showed that most assaults are shoving, elbowing hard enough to throw the teacher off balance, punching and hitting, slapping in the face, spitting, and biting hard enough to require a tetanus shot and Hepatitis B and C testing. Though these may seem like minor injuries, some have led to substantial medical bills and lost wages. According to Jim Rieland, director of Allegheny County juvenile probation, most assaults occur in the classrooms, cafeterias and hallways. Objects, such as loaded book bags, are more of the problem than guns or knives in these incidents.
In the Pittsburgh schools, most teachers are members of the Pittsburgh Federator of Teachers (the Pittsburgh schools’ teachers’ union). If union members are assaulted on the job, they are entitled to 20 extra days of sick leave for that year to take care of student-assault-related injuries. Pittsburgh schools’ teachers must, however, meet stringent rules from the Pittsburgh schools district. To qualify for the extra sick leave, Pittsburgh schools’ teachers must:
• Be members of the union,
• Use their own sick days for the first three days,
• File a police report against the student,
• Have a doctor’s excuse for time off work, and
• Get the Pittsburgh schools’ administrator’s agreement that an assault occurred.
According to John Tarka, union president, the union and the Pittsburgh schools have reached a tentative agreement to create a new alternative school, using the current Clayton School. It would be privately run, taking 432 of the “most persistently disruptive students” from grades six through 12. This would remove these troubled Pittsburgh schools’ students from the mainstream schools, allowing Pittsburgh schools’ teachers to be confident of a safe work environment.
Back-Burnered San Francisco Schools Committee Now Moving to Forefront
In 2003, a committee was created with members appointed from the city Board of Supervisors and the Board of Education. In the beginning, the committee was used to discuss joint concerns on issues, such as affordable housing for teachers, student nutrition, and graffiti in the San Francisco schools. Unfortunately, the structure of the joint committee was a matter of contention from the committee’s inception with an imbalance of power.
The Board of Supervisors control the forum. They decide what issues are put on the meeting agendas for discussion. They have the right to make inquiries of the San Francisco schools’ officials, who are expected to respond to all inquiries. Unfortunately, this is a one-way power structure.
The San Francisco schools are funded by the state and not accountable to city or county governments. The structure of the committee makes the San Francisco schools’ officials accountable to the city’s Board of Supervisors and doomed from the beginning. Thus, the committee has met rarely in the past couple of years.
Though the San Francisco schools’ officials and city supervisors were scheduled to meet twice monthly in 2006, it did not happen, according to Jill Wynns, a veteran San Francisco schools’ board member. Unfortunately, 2006 was a year the committee was most needed. There were several San Francisco schools issues in the forefront last year that caused undue tensions within the San Francisco schools and the community. There were several closures of San Francisco schools, for example, as well as decisions on the use of voter-approved enrichment funds (from the city) for San Francisco schools’ expenditures.
A new committee chairman has been appointed to help bring the committee back to life. Chairman Bevan Dufty, a member of the Board of Supervisors, is promising a more mutual relationship within the committee to build more and better communication between the two leaderships.
In order to breath new life into the committee, Dufty plans to approach the forum as equal partners between the city supervisors and the San Francisco schools’ officials, beginning with agenda items. San Francisco schools’ officials now will be able to submit requests to put issues on meeting agendas. Though Dufty still has final say on the agenda items and there has been no commitment to two-way inquiries, this is a major first step toward positive change.
Other members of the committee include veteran supervisor Sophie Maxwell, newly appointed supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, veteran San Francisco schools’ official Jill Wynns, and newly-elected San Francisco schools’ officials Jane Kim and Mydra Mendoza.
It is hoped that the infusion of new people, especially the new chairman, will energize the committee into a partnership for positive change within the San Francisco schools.
