Tony Blair on Genetically Modified Food Debate

This week, I want to idolize British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, because of remarks he made last week on genetically modified foods.

Addressing a group of scientists last week, Mr. Blair suggested that opponents of genetically modified foods aren’t “rational” when debating this issue.

“Government must show leadership and courage in standing up for science and rejecting an irrational public debate around it [GM food],” said Mr. Blair, referring to “those who have distorted facts to oppose developments such as GM foods.”

Mr. Blair, expectedly, did receive flaks for these remarks. Some challenged him to state if he was openly criticizing Prince Charles, who has openly opposed genetically modified foods [I must, hereby, mention that Prince Charles is wrong to use the privileges of the British throne to make statements that can’t be scientifically substantiated about genetically modified foods].

Others insinuated that it was payback time to multinational biotechnology companies, for millions of dollars donated to the Labor Party.

I found this quite amusing because of instead of addressing real issues, Mr. Blair’s critics decided to dwell on side issues. This, needless to say, has been the hallmark of the debate about genetically modified foods.

Opponents of genetically modified foods dare not attack the science behind genetically modified food because they have no case to make against it. Instead, they go for fringe issues with the aim of confusing the public.

Mr. Blair is right in urging the public to “discuss technological innovations in a more scientifically literate fashion.” Those who genuinely care about food safety should support and not criticize him. Mr. Blair evidently means well for the world.

How else can the world determine the safety of genetically modified foods other than subjecting them to thorough laboratory investigations? This is the premise of Mr. Blair’s argument.

Genetically modified foods have been subjected to rigorous examination by various scientific bodies. The British Royal Society of Science has produced numerous reports showing that genetically modified foods can be beneficial to humans and the environment.

Various United Nations Agencies, notably the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have also published similar reports.

Perhaps Mr. Blair should use his political leverage to prevail upon other European countries to change their attitude towards genetically modified foods. Currently, Europe maintains the most draconian and restrictive laws on genetically modified food. These laws aren’t informed by science, but by populist sentiments

Ethical Boundaries vs Medical Science

Medical science has shown itself capable of performing a hugely diverse number of experiments and procedures, but are apparently publicly halted from stepping beyond so called ethical boundaries.

The fact remains however, that with capability becoming more commonplace, it is only a matter of time before currently ‘uncommon’ technologies become ‘common-place’ so much so that sensitive-technologies become available to uncontrolled labs whom have little regard to the ‘ethical boundaries’. Generally, we Joe-public expect that the establishment (whomever that is) is somehow in control of scientific experimentation especially where sensitive issues as genetic modifications, inter-species DNA experimentation and a whole host of variant technologies are concerned.

We might possibly be a fairly naïve species, however, one does not have to be a rocket scientist to understand that in the long term, eventually, someone, somewhere is likely to overstep the ethical boundaries and create aberrations that should not in the public view, exist. Clearly, the likelihood is that the motives will not always be in the interests of healing, sometimes, power, money or weaponry will be strong motivators. Perhaps inventions created for one reason, will become more profitable for alternative uses.

Reasonable thought would suggest that there are already many issues that will never surface in the public domain that are researched by those far beyond controls of ordinary society. You nor I are likely to ever know or appreciate the fullness of it all. However at some point, our sensibilities will need to change so that we can accept a greater range of experimentation than we currently consider ethically reasonable because like it or not, technical progress is being made that increasingly denies the right to remain ignorant of the possibilities.

Take for example the current big news concerns about the environment. What if medical science discover ‘how’ to modify human genetics to create a man-made evolution to a new species of ourselves that are smaller, can withstand a wider range of environmental temperature, and can survive on less food or water, were less prone to disease and had a reduce need of large living spaces. Wouldn’t that produce longer, better prospects for survival on this planet?

Advanced technologies need not only create scary images of monstrous mistakes as depicted by movies, indeed, one thing most of us have in common is our desire to survive. Even if some folk out there do develop aberrations that attract money, they will still want to survive so that they can spend their ill gotten gains. The same can be said for weaponry, the winners want to survive, gain ground, defeat the opposition.

Of course there’s always going to be exceptions, mistakes, errors of judgement and insanity. For the most part however, extreme science researching what can be done with DNA, will likely be a good thing for us all in the long term.

Powerful arguments against some controversial emerging stem research technologies that utilise animal cells to host human DNA material – come from those concerned about the distinction between humans and animals. Creating a chimera (part man part animal) promotes visions of legend and horror, however, what actually is the distinction between animals and humans anyway? Humans, are animals. Mammals like ourselves are shown to share ancestries and evolution along with many different species. One might argue that the simple distinction of ‘brain-power’ alone is not a significant differentiator when one considers the commonality of complex mechanisms such as ‘blood-oxygen-conversion’ ‘digestion’ ‘procreation mechanisms’ let alone things like ‘sight’ ‘hearing’ ‘breathing’ ‘sleep’ the list goes on and on showing us how similar we are to other species of animals sharing this planet. In fact it is the very similarities of cells that enables scientists to experiment with the fundamentals of inter-species technologies. You don’t hear much about using plant cells to host human DNA do you!

There are many people of the opinion that adaptations throughout evolution have led to the creation of new successful species and that in order for life to survive at all, it must adapt. Whether or not it is ethically correct to utilise our evolved brain to create physical tools and methodologies that enable us as a species to mix genes in a test tube… The answer to that is a difficult philosophical argument that may take some time for people to resolve. What is in evidence however is that the human brain has in fact developed the methodologies and scientific technologies that allow such cellular manipulation as well as the motivations in their many guises that drive us as a species towards even further scientific development.

Whatever your opinion about the ethics and exactly where the boundaries are placed or when they should move, technological progress is unlikely to be stopped so long as mankind exists. Sooner or later we will simply have to accept the realisation that ‘yes’ someone will use a cows egg to create stem cells and ‘yes’ someone else might well grow spare human organs inside pigs.

You may find that the part is a knock-off without you or them knowing it. A knock-off is an imitation of a brand name product, usually made of inferior material. Check the packaging for any errors in printing or spelling. That is usually an indication that the part is a knock-off. The cheap part may save you a few dollars now, but it may cause hundreds of dollars of damage to the cars operating system. Car parts are also available online. Managing the symptoms of a sore throat

During the lifetime everyone has suffered at least once from sore throat and knows how unpleasant this affection is. Sore throat refers to an inflammation of the pharynx and sometimes of the tonsils and this way it was named as pharyngitis or tonsillitis.

A normal sore throat gives the symptoms of a common cold or flu and lasts for about 3 days. If the patient coughs it will make the disease last longer as it causes another irritation on the throat.

A sore throat can be caused by a virus or by a bacterium. This means that the antibiotic treatment is effective and will be prescribed only for the cases caused by bacteria as viruses are known to be immune to antibiotic drugs. In the first days of sore throat the patient is infectious to others as he can spread the germs by saliva, by kissing, sneezing or coughing. The symptoms of a sore throat are: fever, coughing, headaches, painful red throat, and swollen lymph glands.

Many sore throats are caused by viruses like those responsible for common cold or flu. They are more frequent during winter as we stay indoors, closer to other people. After such a sore throat the immune system is weakened and a bacterial sore throat can easily install. There is no treatment for viral sore throats but symptoms can be managed with cough syrup or over the counter pain relievers. After a few days of rest the organism will defeat the virus infection and the patient will get better.

If the patient has a bacterial sore throat antibiotic drugs will be recommended as they are the only ones who can fight properly the bacterium. The most frequent bacterium responsible for the sore throat is streptococcus group A. In most of the cases cause by streptococcus fever is encountered and cough or other cold symptoms are missing. In some cases the bacterial infection can lead to tonsillitis or towards an ear infection.

The infection of the tonsils is recognized after its unique symptoms: red, swollen tonsils, quite frequent with pus on their surface, high fever and weakness.

Besides viral and bacterial infection, there are some other factors which can cause a sore throat: smoking, pollution, allergies, shouting and coughing, and changes in the local temperature (going out from warm to very cold).

In order to diagnose the sore throat the doctor will first perform a physical examination of the throat and then will swab the back of the throat and sent that sample to the laboratory to see what kid of infection is there: a bacterial or a viral infection.

If the patient has a sore throat which is caused by a viral infection then the doctor will prescribe a pain reliever and will recommend the patient to drink warm liquids like tea or soup and to rest for a few days.

If the patient has a sore throat caused by a bacterium then the doctor will prescribe antibiotic drugs along with pain relievers for the throat.

In order for the patient to cure fast smoking has to be avoided along with alcohol and warm liquids have to be drunk.

The Principle Nadis & Kundalini

The etheric body, according to Hindu mystics, is said to be composed of 72,000 nadis, or subtle nerves. This figure as the actual number is questionable; it is more likely to be symbolic and should not be taken literally. Sushumna, Ida and Pingala are the major nerves of this vital body. Sushumna is the etheric counterpart of the cord of the central nervous system in the spinal column. Ida and Pingala correspond to the two branches of the autonomic nervous system situated along side of the 33 segments of the vertebrae. Ida and Pingala are rooted in the perineum. They rise and flank each side of the sushumna, and they terminate in the openings of the nostrils. Ida is negative in polarity; Pingala, positive. These subtle nerves are the channels for the Yin and Yang energy absorbed through the breath. Hindu yogis have recognized the fact that the breath does not flow equally through the nostrils. A certain cyclic law causes the breath to flow easily through one nostril at a time for an hour or so, and then switching the mechanism to the other nostril. Nature has designed this operation for a certain reason connected with the growth of man’s psyche.

Sushumna has its bottom end at the root chakra, or Muladhara. Its upper end terminates in the brow chakra. Within Sushumna are to be found even subtler nadis called Vajrini-nadi, Chitrini-nadi, and Brahmarandha-nadi. The etheric chakras are anchored in the Chitrini-nadi, and it is this fine nerve in particular that is the pathway for the “serpent-fire,” that electrical, magnetic energy called Kundalini. Five deities are believed to reside in the Brahmarandha-nadi : Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Sadasiva, and Ishvara. These gods are the personifications of certain seed faculties that lie dormant until aroused by their consort, their shakti, the divine Kundalini. Sushumna is one of the repositories in the microcosmic being for the past and present records of the psyche, the subconscious feelings and thoughts of the “Mr Hyde” side of Man. These records are cleansed and transmuted as Kundalini rises and burn her way through.

The Great Central Sun, that spiritual fire burning in the celestial realms, is recognized by occultist as the source of all forms of energies within the galaxy and in our solar system. It radiates its rays into our solar system through the sun, the Solar Logos or deity. This energy qualified by our sun is the divine shakti, the Cosmic Kundalini. An aspect of this cosmic energy is solar prana–that energy that gives and sustains life in physical organism. Cosmic energy is distributed throughout the solar system. Each planetary body receives and assimilates Cosmic Kundalini and qualifies this energy, bestowing upon it its own peculiar quality, and then radiating it out again for the benefit of the other planetary centers. Our satellite, the moon, is also a transformer of Cosmic Kundalini emanating from the sun. The energy that it receives from the sun is transmuted and rayed down upon our earth. Our planet, therefore, is the recipient of various energies emanating from the sun, moon, and the planets; and incidentally, this is the basis of astrology. These energies of the planets, moon, and sun combine with the earth forces in our planetary center and it rises to affect every sentient being that has its abode on Terra. Herein lies the source of Kundalini within Man, for the serpent fire has its origin within the conglomerate energies in the bowels of the earth. It ascends to reside in the vessel prepared for it in the etheric body. This vessel is called “kanda” and it is the etheric counterpart of the coccygeal gland.

Kundalini lies “coiled” within Kanda. It slumbers until awakened through the evolutionary process. Kundalini is the creative potential within Man. It is a dynamic force, a dormant static power that releases atomic energy when aroused. Normally, at Nature’s pace, it may take thousands of millions of years for kundalini to fulfill her destiny within Man. By treading the spiritual path; however, kundalini may be awakened within a single lifetime–with the careful guidance of a true Spiritual Master–though this step should not be attempted by all men who simply desires or is interested in it. It is enough for the average person simply to initially engage in purification exercises and living in accord with spiritual laws. Premature kundalinic activation without certain preparations may cause pain and suffering as the fiery force scorches its way up the spine.It may burn the nervous system causing disorders, mental derangements, and even death. Its awakening should be preceded by the yogic or alchemical steps of soul cultivation so familiar to students of the occult and mysticism. It might surprise some to learn that Kundalini is actually not a “fiery” energy but a cool force. It is the friction between Kundalini and impurities that causes the sensation of heat.

Kundalini energy accelerates evolution, there is no doubt of this; however, unwieldy handling of this energy may cause the opposite effect. Kundalini may give abundant life, or kill the foolish individual who attempts to raise it without full knowledge. Be wary of the so-called Masters that seek to awaken your kundalini for a fee–most of them are deluded and have not even raised their own Kundalini. Energy rising in the back in the form of any sensation does not indicate that the full Kundalini force is rising. There are three aspects to Kundalini and any of one of them may rise up the spine. There is the Kundalini force circulating around the meridian nerves; there is the kundalini force manifesting as sexual energy; and the true kundalini at the base of the spine. Observing the so-called masters of Kundalini energy and we still find them short of the spiritual standards as exemplified by the Saints and Hierophants of the Almighty. The true instant rising of the Kundalini as triggered by Masters of shaktipat are not given indiscriminately but wisely to those who are prepared for it and not for the mere asking of it by the immature soul. Even in shaktipat, it is not the true Kundalini that rises but simply an aspect of it. There is too much sensationalism involved in Kundalini awakening.

The serpent fire, or the force of shakti, when awakened, rises within sushumna to unite with the Shivaic energy from the Ego that may lie within the third ventricle of the brain. Egoic energy, like kundalini has to be evoked for it to be present at the marriage bed inside the cranium. When united, they stimulate the head centers and glands, and the third-eye begins to unfold. It raises Man to a higher plane of consciousness. Inside the cranium, kundalinic fire stimulates the pineal gland. The magnetic union of these head centers causes an explosion of energy which illuminates the entire cranium and causes physical changes in the brain. Kundalini is the source of Man’s regenerative potential. She vitalizes the chakras, and via the chakras, the glands. The glands then secrete hormones that are life and youth preserving. Kundalini is related to the serpent in the story of Genesis. The true interpretation of this book as known to the initiate, remains to be revealed to a wider audience. The Tree of Knowledge with its branches corresponds to the central nervous system with its various plexuses. It is through this nervous system and the senses that we acquire knowledge of the physical plane. The Tree of Life represents the autonomic nervous system to some extent but specifically to the etheric nervous system, or the nadis.

Protecting the body from an untimely kundalinic stimulation and a bombardment of astral forces are certain network of nadis, or “etheric webs,” which are found along the subtle spinal cord. In Yogic philosophy, these webs are called “granthi,” meaning “knots.” There are three granthis of considerable importance. They are called “Brahma’s knot,” “Vishnu’s knot,” and “Rudra’s knot.” These are located in the vicinity of the Muladhara, Anahata, and Ajna chakras, respectively. They offer a maximum resistance to Kundalini when she ascends.The shielding off of Kundalini by these knots as she rises, causes manifestations of a painful nature in the body–but this is for the general well-fare of the psychosomatic system. The brain is safe if the warning of pain is heeded and kundalinic arousal halted. These protective shields, or etheric webs are “dispersed” naturally, or raised in frequency through spiritual living and the purification of the nadis. Kundalini herself, however, burns away the subtle dross within sushumna and in the body which the normal purificatory process is unable to accomplish completely. The proper way for raising the fiery force is through magnetization of the higher centers and sushumna and not through direct arousal by the focalization of the consciousness on the slumbering serpent. Kundalini rises as the male and female polar energies within the body are balanced. Yogic mystics often resort to certain contractions and locks of the muscles called “bandhas” to arouse Kundalini and to assist her ascent upwards. These bandhas are applied in the following areas:

1) In the urogenital-pelvic diaphragm

2) In the chest diaphragm

3) In the cranial muscles

These locks are called in Yoga teachings “Mula Bandha,” “Uddhivana Bandha,” and “Jalandhara Bandha,” respectively. These contractions or “locks” rejuvenate the chakras, glands, nerves and nadis. The exercises of these locks are accompanied by directing the internal wind–”prana” and “apana,” which must be balanced in the root chakra.

Kundalini awakening in general, must be supervised by an adept who is well-experienced in these matters and who has had his own Kundalini raised. It is a matter of right timing, the ripeness of the disciple which the Adept-Guru must determine carefully for his disciple. Kundalini arousal can be safe or it can be a dangerous matter depending on the readiness and prior preparation of the chela. One of the dangers of Kundalini arousal which should be noted is the motion of the force–whether it rises upwards or downwards. The right course is upwards, and it is symbolically called the “serpent of wisdom.” The downward course causes sexually deviations and an amplification of the carnal instincts and desires, which are represented by the “red dragon” in myth and allegories. The raised serpent giving heath and vitality may be found in the symbols adopted by the medical and apothecary professions : the caduceus and the coiled serpent around a chalice.

As we have seen, Kundalini is represented by the serpent and dragon, depending on her motion. Her downward spiral is also represented by the scorpion. When she reaches the Sahasrara chakra, when she has united with her Lord Shiva, the Christ force, she is transformed into an eagle, which symbolizes a transcendental consciousness. The wings of an eagle together with the other components of the subtle body are portrayed in that emblem held in the hands of the god Hermes or Mercury–the caduceus–and appropriated by the medical profession as mentioned above. The passage and journey of Kundalini upwards from the base chakra into Sahasrara may be found in the allegories of the Rosicrucian tale of CRC in the Fama Fraternitatis, in the Exodus of the Israelites, in the story of Jesus, in the Grail myth, and in the opening of the seven seals in Revelation. Some occult students believe that the central mystery of the Holy Shekinah in Qabalism refers to Kundalini. The circumambulations of the pilgrims around holy sites such as the Ka’ba in Mecca and Mt. Kailash in the Himalayas are symbolic of the spiralling ascent of the serpent fire. When interpreted esoterically, Moses is believed to have received instructions on Kundalini as implied in the following verse:

“Make thee a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it shall live.” (Num 21:8)

This serpent upon the pole is the caduceus with Kundalini flowing harmoniously in the three nadis. With the help of Kundalini, every one bitten by ignorance although spiritually dead, shall live as they are spiritually illumined and perceive through the eyes of wisdom.

In Masonry, Kundalini is represented by Hiram Abiff. The 33 degrees of attainment of this esoteric brotherhood, which have degraded in modern times, represents the 33 segments of the spinal column. The resurrection of Hiram is the work undertaken by the Masonic initiate. The life of Jesus also represents kundalinic ascent. The number 33 again appears as the age of the Nazarene Master as he was crucified upon the hill of Golgotha, the place of the skull–the initiate’s skull. In this context Jesus represents the power of Kundalini. More of this will not be revealed here.

Incense plays a role in sanctifying an environment as a preparation for spiritual work. It is used in almost all religions and mystical traditions. Its smoke spiralling upwards to convey Man’s prayers to the gods–as believed by some cultures–represents the rising energy of Kundalini.

Chrism Oil & the Brain Dews

Kundalini alone is incapable of illuminating or transforming brain-consciousness–this is a principle often over-looked by New Agers. Kundalini has to unite with Egoic energies and also convey the etheric substance called by some “Chrism Oil” to the third ventricle of the brain. This oil is produced by the prostrate gland in the male and the uterus in the female. It is transported to the brain by the serpent force where it mixes with the crystallized energies of the Ego called “Brain Dews.” These are then released into the bloodstream and into the nervous system. This results in psychological and biological changes–in the acceleration of the vibratory rate of the body; and it brings about rejuvenation and an improvement in the quality and extent of the magnetic field, the aura surrounding the physical body–but these are the least important of the changes wrought. The important transformations occur in the consciousness.

Chrism oil, sometimes called “the Golden oil,” is developed out of the sexual fluids. If it is not held in the body by conservation and sublimation of semen and the sexual force, is wasted in the act of procreation and generation, especially if the carnal nature is excessively expressed. When conserved, this oil, this “balm of Gilead,” does not automatically reach the third ventricle where it is to blend with its mate unless directed there with the aid of the Kundalini force in the practice of spiritual acclivity techniques. By conserving, transmuting and sublimating sexual energy–called “Ojas-shakti” by yogis–together with the Chrism oil to the cerebrum, we stimulate brain cells and awaken to a higher intelligence. In Taoist yoga, this is called “reversing the flow.” Taoists refer to sexual energy as “ching chi,” which is a transformation of Kundalini and the chi or prana in the gonads. This spiritual force is willed and directed mentally to the head center where it again undergoes some changes to develop into a higher energy called “shien chi.”

Religious and esoteric groups of the past and present practice sexual restrain–some call it “encratism.” All mystical schools in the East and in the West believe that ejaculation of the seminal fluid is detrimental to the mind, body, and soul. It should be noted, however, that the object is not sexual expression, but transformation, sublimation and assimilation.When conserved and sublimated, seminal energy tones up the whole organism. It makes the senses more acute; it brightens the eyes, and causes a certain sheen to be seen on the skin; it also unfolds psychic abilities. Sexual energy is the force that assists man to raise his consciousness to a higher state. Thus we see from this that the energy of procreative sex is a potential power which could and should be transmuted into a higher expression and used for spiritual purposes in right living and in the exercising of certain esoteric techniques to evolve the consciousness to Superconsciousness. Metaphysical sexual unions would occur within the microcosm as a result of sexual sublimation and the absorption of the Chrism oil; and they are as follows:

1) Union between the energies of the lower and higher chakras in the heart and throat centers.

2) Union between the force-field of the pineal and pituitary glands.

3) Union between the Personality and the Ego.

4) Union between the Monad and the Personality-Ego.

Brain-dews, called “Ros” by the ancient Rosicrucians, is a spiritually magnetized fluid that transforms human blood into a river of life, into the saving blood of Christ, into the “redeeming blood of the lamb.” It is the true waters of baptism. Ros is the crystallized Christ substance. The Christ force emanates from the Godhead of the omniverse; it is the son aspect of the cosmos that enters this solar system via the sun. This Christ force, called “Azoth” by alchemists, stands at the door of the Sahasrara chakra and knocks:

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” (Rev 3:20)

Normally, the Christ force stands at the portal uninvited into the sanctum sanctorum. This is because its presence is usually unacknowledged and the way for its entry obstructed and hindered by impurities, psychic toxins, as a result of a materialistic life style and orientation; Other factors also prevent the Christ force from entering the brain to densify into Christ substance or Ros and to have a spiritual effect upon the lower aspects of the microcosm. These are:

1) An unpurified blood stream.

2) Unresponsive chakras.

3) An unconstructed antahkarana or spiritual channel between the Ego–the Spiritual Triad, and the Quarternary.

We therefore, invite the Christ into our system by purification of the chakras, nadis, and bloodstream; and a change in the life-style that is partial to the spiritual life. The latter builds the antahkarana (we will elaborate upon this later).

As we have said before, brain-dews are the condensations of the Christ force or ethers of the higher planes. The bloodstream, as the vehicle of the Ego, determines an individual’s spiritual state, as understood metaphysically. The more Christ substances are assimilated into the blood, the greater will be the body’s etherealization and perfection. It should be noted, however, that the body will absorb only as much Christ substance as the state of an individual’s consciousness would allow. It should also be realized that unless the brain-dews mixes with the Chrism oil, it would simply evaporate and leave no effect upon the whole organism. Love and its manifold expressions greatly increases one’s ability to assimilate the Christ substance. Ros, the condensed fluid of the Christ substance, is believed to impregnate saliva in an adulterated form; the saliva of spiritual people, are therefore said to possess therapeutic and rejuvenative qualities. This can be seen in the gospel stories of the Master Jesus healing the blind with his spittle. Certain Sufi methods of healing also employ the spittle.

Health care providers, such as physicians, dentists, nurses among others, have the responsibility to treat their patients in their ailments. Making VoIP Perform as Advertised

The promise of lower cost has motivated many enterprises to move their voice traffic to the enterprise IP wide area network (WAN). Many have discovered, however, that Voice over IP (VoIP) quality does not always meet business use standards.

In addition, as VoIP is introduced to the network, the performance of other business-critical applications — already at risk given growing Web/Internet traffic — begins to deteriorate. The challenge is to assure the performance of real-time VoIP calls while protecting business data that requires immediate response times, in a manner that optimizes the efficiency of the WAN.

The growth in real-time and interactive business traffic that requires immediate response mandates a layer of application-aware control that intelligently links the performance requirements of a growing mix of converged data, VoIP and video applications with available network resources in a manner that assures an optimal user experience.

This application-aware, traffic-management solution should work with the existing IP network, and should assure the performance of individual VoIP calls and application flows. Policies should be accurate and application-aware, and tuning performance in both the inbound and outbound directions should be possible to ensure the integrity of each user connection.

Users should first know what is currently running on their network so that they can proactively manage the WAN to assure business-critical data and VoIP performance. Traffic should be actively monitored, classified and then assigned policies that assure the required level of performance in the most efficient manner possible.

Intelligent traffic-management policies can be applied to assure the performance of existing business-critical applications (e.g., CRM, SAP), while non-critical traffic is limited in the most efficient manner possible. In most cases, traffic-management policies that specifically guarantee bandwidth and response time for each application session and/or flow are required.

VolP-specific controls should be applied to assure real-time VoIP call performance (e.g., latency, jitter, bandwidth) on a call-by-call basis. This requires granular and accurate enforcement of bandwidth policies and priority control for each individual call. Given that a VoIP call is a two-way exchange, these policies should be enforced in both the inbound and outbound direction.

In addition, because a VoIP session consists of multiple flows (e.g., call setup, call control and call media) each flow should be individually protected to guarantee the integrity of the call. This means the traffic-management solution should be session aware and enforced on a per-flow basis. For example, if the call control information for a single call is compromised by the media traffic, calls may be dropped midstream.

While proactive traffic management provides a first level of control against other applications running on the network, techniques such as packet size optimization and burst control are necessary to manage the impact at a packet level. These are not available when a router alone is used to perform the traffic-management functions.

Call admission control is needed to protect VoIP calls already in progress. This should be network aware (knowledgeable about calls running on the network), with policies that establish directives on what to do when the next call is placed. In addition, the policy-management process should be kept simple, using VolP-aware defaults that apply policies dynamically based on the VoIP protocol, the codec and the number of concurrent calls to be supported.

Engage in a Constructive Debate About Genetically Modified Crops

Richard Heinberg, famous for his rantings against Big Oil, in October delivered a lecture at the E. F. Schumacher Society in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on October 28, 2006.

The abbreviated text of the lecture entitled “Fifty Million Farmers,” is available in the online edition of Energy Bulletin November 17, 2006.

In the lecture, Mr. Heinberg forecasted that prolonged famine looms in the United States due to, among other factors, the effects of global warming, shortage of fuel, and increasing scarcity of water.

Even agricultural technologies such as genetic engineering, according to Mr. Heinberg, would do nothing to alleviate food shortage in the U.S.

This is what he said about genetically modified crops. “Our collective experience with genetically modifying crops so far shows that glowing promises of higher yields, or of the reduced need for herbicides, have seldom been fulfilled.”

He went on, “At the same time, new genetic technologies carry with them the potential for horrific unintended consequences in the forms of negative impacts on human health and the integrity of ecosystems.”

Mr. Heinberg’s rantings about GM crops sound like a comic strip. First what does he mean by “Our collective experience with genetically modified crops…?” Whose collective experience is he referring to? His “Our collective experience…” is null and void considering that 200 million acres of genetically modified crops are being grown in more than 21 countries.

It’s even more misleading for Mr. Heinberg to say that new genetic technologies pose “horrific” threats to human health. This is mere sensationalism because he doesn’t even bother to identify these “horrific threats.”

Mr. Heinberg’s lecture reminds me of a video clip in YouTube that equally attempts to discredit genetically modified crops without any scientific justification. Entitled “Contaminated” the video, as is the habit of anti-technology activists, dwells on hearsays and lies about modern agricultural biotechnology. What do people stand to gain from distorting scientific facts?

It’s time the world resorts to a civil discourse about GM crops. Let’s dwell on the science behind genetically modified crops rather than half-baked issues only tailored to instill fear and despondence in consumers.

Decoding Book Resurrects the Ancient Astronaut Theme

Several decades ago, books by insurance salesman Erich von Daniken caused an international sensation as he depicted photographs of large-stone edifices hard to believe built by primitive humans. His dreams of ancient astronauts, however, soon faded into oblivion as archeologists came up with proof that primitive humans could have constructed the pyramids and like structures without alien assistance. Nonetheless, the possibility of other types of evidence for ancient astronauts cannot be discarded.

Overtly a cryptography and deception tactics book, Morten St. George’s Incantation of the Law Against Inept Critics: A Guide to Cryptic Thinking takes up the ancient astronaut gauntlet. But there’s no stone here. Now, it’s not a question of what the ancient astronauts did, but of what they left behind. Deception cryptography leads the way. The only known deployment of this unique form of cryptography is to be found in forty two prophetic stanzas published by Nostradamus in the 16th century. So was Nostradamus an alien? Hardly, but St. George’s book asserts he was the last guardian of an alien artifact.

What’s the evidence?

First, a breakthrough decoding of the forty two stanzas in which numerous contemporary events are not only accurately recounted but also systematically dated. St. George concludes there is no longer any doubt about whether or not the future was foreseen. It was, and likewise we are witnessing the powers of a super-civilization.

Second, the discovery that the forty two stanzas (perceived as a book of divine revelation) were secretly guarded, known to, and commented upon by a cabalistic sect during medieval times. St. George says these forty-two revelations predate Nostradamus by centuries, and now there is a “book of light” in the picture, not “light” like in “enlightenment” but literally composed of light, black fire on top of white fire. This describes the artifact that survived to reach Nostradamus.

Third, back to the prophecies, which come forth and tell us the name of their author and when they were written. According to St. George, they were written in the sixth century, a thousand years before the time of Nostradamus.

Why is there no record of alien arrival in the sixth century? St. George responded we are referring to creatures with two arm appendages and four fingers at the end of each, but other than that, they landed as helmeted aquatics and didn’t remotely look like humans. He says it is a myth that intelligent aliens have to be hominoids, and it is likewise a myth that the only road to technology is the road taken by humans. “In the Dark Ages, these aquatics would have been stoned as demons in most places, and if there were any reference to them, religious censorship would have obliterated it.”

Then, how do you know that they had four fingers? St. George replied, “I said they would have been stoned as demons in most places, not in all places. Archaeologists are far from perfect. They have no idea how to distinguish the drawing of an aquatic extraterrestrial from the drawing of a masked witchdoctor. Maybe some of them had suspicions but didn’t speak out, fearing for their career or whatever. Extraterrestrial intelligence and civilizations more advanced than ours are terrifying concepts for segments of human society.”

There are many unsolved mysteries in world history. Is this another one? St. George emphatically asserts: “No! These extraterrestrials were no fools. Besides who and when, the prophecies also tell us where, that is, where they came from.” He says the prophecies provide data for a star arrow rising upwards from southern skies and for a planetary arrow moving outwards from the solar system, and where these arrows collide would be the point of contact.

Then there will be contact? St. George has no doubts about the matter: “Yes. My unsophisticated astronomy software can only provide approximate coordinates, but one day astronomers will work out the precise coordinates and point a radio telescope there, and there will be contact. To provide us with coordinates and not allow contact would be deceitful, and they have no reason to be deceitful on this. Else, why bother to interfere with us at all?”

Aliens: Where SETI Astronomers Can Find Them

SETI, or Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, has been an ongoing endeavor for many decades. In the early days, it was expected to be a quick success, so much so that national governments even helped fund these projects. Like the Moon race, there was something of a “find E.T.” race. All that is gone now. Government funding has virtually evaporated around the globe. The explanation is simple: no one likes a perpetual failure. The few remaining SETI efforts have to count on private funding to scrape along. Well, the objective of this article is to come to the rescue of the last of the SETI astronomers, to tell them where they can find E.T. so that they can regain the world’s respect.

That last sentence was not meant to be cynical. As noted in my article “Decoding Book Resurrects the Ancient Astronaut Theme,” author Morten St. George claims that some of the prophecies of Nostradamus are of alien origin, and that those prophecies tell us how to calculate the galactic coordinates of where E.T. came from. In a follow-up interview, I posed the following question to St. George: Do you agree that contact with intelligent aliens could be of immense importance to humankind? He agreed. Then I asked: Do you agree that this is more important than your selling a few copies of your cryptic thinking book? He agreed. This article will be a little longer and a little more technical than the others.

According to St. George, three prophetic stanzas combine to provide information about E.T.’s location. The first of these is stanza number I-81. Here, the first four words of the fourth verse are the most relevant: “Kappa, Thita, Lambda, mors.” St. George says he has an etymological dictionary that defines “mors” as the “bite of a scorpion.” Consequently, Kappa, Theta, and Lambda are the names of three stars in the tail section of the constellation Scorpius. (Note that the use of Greek letters for star names postdates Nostradamus). It’s a star arrow, and Lambda is the arrow head. Elsewhere, the prophecies name three cities to form an arrow circling around the globe; thus, St. George believes the three stars should be viewed as points on a sphere.

Where does the star arrow point? St. George says he followed the star arrow upwards on a star map and it hit or passed close to a dark cloud called Barnard 72, for which he already had other indications. So that’s the answer. E.T. came from or near Barnard 72. But we’re not done yet. We’re looking for precise coordinates.

The second stanza is numbered IV-32. According to St. George’s decoding, this stanza tells a story: Once upon a time, Triton, Pluto, and Charon formed a triple planet system with a distinct orbit around the Sun. Then one day, the aliens came along, grabbed hold of Triton, and pushed it into a retrograde orbit around the planet Neptune. In route to Neptune, Pluto and Charon hung on for a while, then broke loose and drifted off into a new orbit. When did this happen? St. George says the aliens were here in 580 A.D., so that would be his guess for the date of these planet manipulations.

I mentioned that I had read on the Internet that Pluto has been downgraded, that it is no longer considered a planet. St. George responded: “I believe that was because they found that Pluto didn’t clear away debris in its orbit. But since 580 A.D., a contemporary date in terms of solar system history, Pluto in its new orbit would have made only a handful of complete orbits around the Sun, hardly enough time to clear away much debris. In any case, the astronomers got it all wrong. What they should really be looking for is Triton’s original orbit, a cleared-out orbit with no planet in it. And I doubt that we’re talking about an orbit at the outer edges of the solar system. Triton’s original orbit may have been closer to the Sun than Neptune. They need to figure out where Triton could have been in 580 A.D., then they will know where to look for that orbit.”

Why did the aliens move Triton? A display of power? St. George remarked that the star arrow only provides longitudinal coordinates. We also need to know the latitude . The planets have to be in the right position at the right time. And the three stars too, for that matter.

The last stanza of the three stanzas is numbered IV-33. It begins: Jupiter closer to Venus than to the Moon, appearing in full whiteness. According to St. George, Earth and Jupiter would have to be pretty much on opposite sides of the Sun for this to be true, and the full Moon (more likely seen from the Alien Planet than from Earth) serves as a timer. The alignment is Alien Planet, Sun, Moon.

The next line of IV-33 goes: Venus hidden under the whiteness Neptune (discovered more than two hundred years after the death of Nostradamus). Note that there’s no “of” between whiteness and Neptune. Meanwhile, the French words following “hidden” (used elsewhere in the prophecies to cryptic ends), “soUS la bANcheUR,” allows the extraction of “Uranus.” Thus, the whiteness (partial rather than full) is Uranus, not Neptune, and we have a second alignment: Alien Planet, Uranus, Venus.

IV-33 has one more line: From Mars struck through the white granary. Since Neptune was left hanging at the end of the preceding line, it should come into play here, meaning Neptune from Mars struck through the white granary. According to St. George, the “white granary” refers to a star cluster called the Pleiades, which happens to lie at the opposite side of the sky from Barnard 72. Until recently, St. George thought the planetary arrow to Barnard 72 commenced with Mars, so he not yet had a chance to check out if a Mars, Neptune, Pleiades alignment, or a Pleiades, Mars, Neptune alignment, is even feasible.

Overall, there are only a limited number of possibilities. IV-33 gives us two inner planets, Venus and Mars, and two outer planets, Uranus and Neptune. Mars lines up with Neptune to hit the Pleiades, and Venus lines up with Uranus to hit the Alien Planet. Depending upon the Pleiades direction, Uranus and Neptune need to be together on the same side of the solar system or on directly opposing ends of the solar system. Also remember to check that you’re viewing a full Moon from the Alien Planet, and that Jupiter is closer to Venus than the Moon at the same time. When? The skies and planets are in constant motion. In what year does all this happen?

St. George is convinced that the date of the given configuration should somehow or somewhere be provided in the prophecies. Other than the stanza number, 433, we have 580, 700, 703, 882, 883, 1204, 1559, 1571, 1607, 1609, 1649, 1666, 1689, 1690, 1700, 1727, 1781, 1813, 1832, 1858, 1859, 1861, 1928, 1952, 1955, 1979, 1982, 1999, 2001, and 2006. The years 1571, 1607, 1781, 1859, and 1982 were astronomy related. St. George suspects one of the later years is more likely mainly because astronomers may not have accurate data the position of the outer planets in earlier times. “We have to assume that they want us to get it right, and precision is clearly required here.”

2006? What happened in 2006? St. George replied: “Absolutely nothing. 2006 was a second, inferable date in a London catastrophe stanza. The date does not necessarily have to come from an astronomy stanza. It can be provided elsewhere.”

Please excuse the digression. My final question was: Do you realistically expect SETI astronomers to take you up on this coordinate stuff? St. George responded: “Yes. It would be foolish of them not to. The way they’re going now, their odds of finding E.T. are not even one in a billion. If my theories merely reduce the odds to one in a thousand, their chances improve immensely. Moreover, I think they’ve forgotten; SETI was originally based on the premise that there are lots of intelligent civilizations out there, which in turn implies that at least one of them should have succeeded in exploring the entire galaxy by now.”

So there you have it, SETI astronomers, go forth and become famous, work out the coordinates, point your radio telescope there, and tell the world you heard from E.T.!
