Better Late Than Never?

Have you ever sat back and wondered about the corporate decisions made by the executives at Microsoft? Well, I certainly have. It never ceases to amaze me how utterly clueless these people are. The blogosphere has been ablaze this week, with the news that Microsoft is entering the portable MP3 player market. One pundit or another is claiming that the new Microsoft Zune will be the ultimate iPod killer. On the other hand, there are a number of us that have serious doubts about Microsoft’s ability to penetrate a market that is already saturated with their competitor’s products.

However, one cannot help but wonder why they have waited this long. Apple has been playing in this space for years now, as have dozens of other companies in the consumer electronics industry. I can see the logic behind a wait-and-see approach, but this is a sad case of too little, too late for Microsoft. With the intellectual resources and working capital that Microsoft possesses, I am continually astounded by their lack of initiative in certain market spaces.

So why is a company that is an obvious titan in their chosen industry, so afraid to take chances? Is Bill Gates so preoccupied with his philanthropic work that he has allowed his company to drift off into the sea of irrelevance? When they are making moves, like their recent announcement of the upcoming Zune MP3 player, I seriously have to wonder what they have been doing for the last five years.

I realize that Microsoft has an unlimited marketing budget, but do they honestly think that they have any chance of penetrating the market that Apple so obviously dominates? Perhaps they have developed a novel way to turn back time, but in my humble opinion this may well be a complete waste of time.

For all the naysayers out there, I am aware that the Zune project is comprised of a number of strategic initiatives for Microsoft. Yes, the MP3 player is but one element of a larger corporate strategy in play here. Honestly, I wish Microsoft the best of luck in these new endeavors. Hopefully, they will release a product that will give Apple the motivation to develop their next-generation handheld gadget. AppleBerry, anyone? In this industry, competition drives innovation. Microsoft certainly is competitive, but have they ever been truly innovative? Time will tell. Unless, of course, Bill has found a way to turn back time. Now that would be innovative! You heard it here first, kids.

It uses infrared to transmit audio and video data, and connects to a standard pair of binoculars. It employs the use of optical lenses to amplify the audio and video signals.

Soldiers in the field can connect headphones and a microphone to the binoculars to speak to one another, so long as they are both using the same device. The great thing about LightSpeed is that it is considerably more secure than traditional lasers or radio. Furthermore, it is extremely low power. This is important because it is less susceptible to being picked up and monitored by the other side. While it is intended for short range, line-of-sight communications, it has proven to be highly versatile in the field.

One application that has showed incredible promise is during vessel boarding search and seizure. The device can be used to transmit biometric data of passengers back to the ship. It is also ideal as a secondary communications device during radio blackouts. LightSpeed is also being tested for use in communications between submarines and aircraft, explosive ordinance disposal, and unmanned aerial vehicle landings.

Although the technology behind the LightSpeed device has been around for some time, it was not until 2003 that it first came to the attention of the US Navy. It was discovered at a tradeshow by a Navy Commander, and submitted to the Office of Naval Research’s Tech Solutions department. ONR’s Tech Solutions is a program that allows Sailors and Marines to suggest potential solutions to technology challenges. It seems that everyone has one these days. Walking the dog, traveling to work, at the gym, the idea of carrying your entire music library everywhere with you is appealing to most of us, but what is this mp3 thing anyway?

What is mp3?
MP3 is an abbreviation for Moving Picture Experts Group layer III. This technology allows audio data to fit into a much smaller space than it used originally, with little or no loss of audio quality. Normally raw audio data is very large and unmanageable and is especially difficult to deal with on portable devices due to the lack of storage available (your standard audio CD fits at most 80 minutes of raw audio data on it). Mp3 allows the storage of approximately 10 times the raw audio data in memory of the same size (that’s over 800 minutes onto the same 80 minute audio CD).

What’s WMA?
WMA files are Microsoft’s equivalent of mp3 files. They offer slightly better compression (more music for your MB) and some additional built in copy-write protection for the over cautious record labels.

More and more mp3 players support WMA files these days. There is a growing amount of music available for download on the Internet in WMA format, so it’s worth looking out for.

Audio Quality
Ever since mp3 players started to show their face in the early 90′s there has been a constant argument over audio quality. Many strongly feel that mp3 compression adversely affects the quality of the sound, whereas others argue that mp3 technology only removes sound data that cannot be heard by the human ear, and therefore could not be of any lesser quality.

Memory Type
There are currently two types of memory available in mp3 players, solid state and hard disk. Solid state memory is usually very fast and does not suffer from skips. Hard disk memory is like a small version of your personal computers main disk storage, although these are not supposed to suffer from skipping, I’ve personally known this to be a problem on certain models during a brisk walk or jog.

The main difference between the two is the size available, solid state players are currently ranging between approximately 256mb and 2Gb, whereas hard disk players have an average storage capacity of around 20Gb, over 10 times larger than the solid state models.

So, you ask, why bother with solid state memory? Well, it’s usually a matter of price, you can buy a 1Gb solid state mp3 player for under £50 these days but hard disk players start at around £130.

Memory Size
The size of an mp3 depends on two things, the quality and the length of the track. A good rule of thumb when deciding the size you’ll need is that you’ll usually get about 1 min for every Megabyte (Mb), or approximately 200 songs for each 512Mb, you have of memory at an average to good recording quality. Of course you can get much more, or less, by altering the quality of the track. Another term you’ll see around is a Gigabyte (Gb), a Gigabyte is a measure of Megabytes (Gb), where 1Gb = 1024Mb. And if you’re wondering why its 1024Mb and not 1000mb… ask your IT support!
I take my mp3 player everywhere with me and only usually hook it up to my computer to add new music about once a week. I like to have as much on there as possible, so I opted for a Sony 20Gb hard disk model, but if you simply want some entertainment while at the gym you might want to save yourself a few quid and go for a cheaper solid state unit.

Battery Life
Another thing to look out for when buying an mp3 player is the battery life. Until fairly recently the average battery life for one of these units was approximately 4-5 hours maximum, but new developments from companies like Sony and Microsoft mean you can now get a battery life of 30 or even 40 hours between charges.

Be aware, some very popular units only sport an average battery life of approximately 4 hours, this can be very annoying, make sure you check the facts before you buy.

Portable Storage
Many players these days allow not only the storage of audio files but also any other computer files you might want by simply connecting to your computer using a USB cable. It can be a handy way to transfer your files between home and work.

So what’s next?
As mp3 player technology advances there are more and more features being added to these units. Some later generations of Ipod, for example, have built in digital photograph albums. Your pictures can be downloaded and accessed on the move, whereas other units have incorporated analogue radio and even DAB digital radio receivers. On a side note, mp3 player sound quality is only as good as the headphones you listen with. I would personally recommend spending a bit of time and money here, the difference in sound quality and clarity obtained from a pair of Shure e3c earphones for example, far outweighs the cost of around £99.

Where mobile were once marketed as an high-tech device, a tool packed with ingenious features, the new trend is for fashion phones. The major handset manufacturers are now offering seasonal collections, joint-venturing with well known fashion designers, and emphasizing aesthetic features when marketing their products. Indeed, some companies are scaling back the technical, yet utilitarian features, offering simpler but sleeker phones; form over function. Somewhere along the evolutionary path of the cell phone, the device has reached the point where it is no longer considered a gadget, available only to the privileged few with the money and/or technical savoir faire, but an ordinary piece of equipment not unlike a wristwatch. For handset manufacturers, there is no benefit in trying to “out-tech” the competition. And excepting some radical departure from the silicon chip, the current technology can expect only slight improvements. For manufacturers the question is how to continue adding value to their product, for consumers it is a question of choice. The rise of the fashion phone is inextricably linked with consumer’s desire to differentiate themselves from other consumers. The pursuit of individuality seems to be a priority, at least that is what companies like Motorola believe. The staggering growth in the mobile content industry points to consumer preoccupation with personalizing their mobiles. The catch-phrase, “Make it you own”, is selling ringtones, wallpapers, phone charms and decorative cases, now it’s selling fashion phones. More and more, it seems, what we own defines us. Despite capitalizing on the trend at lightening speed, handset manufacturers aren’t the prophets personalization, the trend towards customized and fashion phones is consumer driven. In China, where mobile phone saturation is high, it is possible to see phones worn on the wrist in handmade lace cases, or covered in stickers of pop stars and smiley faces. Not surprisingly, engineers like Bill Schweber are wondering who stole their glory. “Engineers do design, and by this we mean the hard and slogging work of pulling together ICs and software and resolving mechanical, thermal, power, display, format, protocol, and packaging issues. Then a celebrity comes along and takes all this hard work, puts on a new case or shell–perhaps studded with crystals or glitter–and takes the bulk of the credit. Once again, engineers do the work and don’t get the appreciation.” Recently, Nokia has undertaken a project with the design firm of Schulz and Webb, to explore the possibilities of personalized phones. The Schulz and Webb blog describes the project as “looking at how personalization of Nokia phones can change their meaning or impact culturally. Large-scale manufacture is inevitably distanced from the very precise social context of use. Once we bring in short-run manufacture, however, the mobile can be more culturally situated.” Nokia have realized, at least, the inevitable paradox of mobile personalization. 4. When in the company of others, neither take nor make telephone calls. Answering an incoming call in an interview or business meeting is a faux-pas that is to be avoided at all costs.
To observe basic cell phone etiquette is neither difficult nor inconvenient. Technology such as cell phones create many possibilities for the advancement of society; society is founded upon mutual regard for one another.  Always refer to the fundamental principle of good manners: treat others as you yourself wish to be treated. An image, of course, is any visual representation. Still images, such as photographs and drawings, capture a single, visual moment in time; while moving and video images, such as television and movies, are able to capture entire periods of time.

A digital image is simply an image that can be represented in a computer’s numeric, or digital, language. A digital image is composed of millions of tiny dots called pixels. If you look closely at a computer monitor, you can probably see these tiny dots at the edges of curved images, such as letters, for example. These pixels can be displayed as any one of several million colors, and when all of the pixels are placed in the right order, they form an image.

The proper ordering and coloring of these pixels is often stored in a file on a computer. Image file types–such as GIF, JPG, BMP, EPS and others–simply use a slightly different technique for describing the proper order and color of the pixels that comprise a given image. Videos–which are a series of still images–are stored in formats that can support information for a soundtrack that goes with the video.

Image files are saved using different formats. For still images alone there are nearly 100 different file formats. Each format offers its own compression technique and image quality for a variety of practical applications. Here are the most common file formats for still images and a brief description of their common use.

To enable the sharing of such a photo, one solution is to compress the photographic data (data that represents the photo), meaning rearranging the data and reducing the number of colors in the photo so that the data takes up less space. This technique is used by the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) file format.

Although the GIF image appears less detailed than the original raw photo–a result of the compression and reduction in color–
the GIF image takes up only 68,000 bytes of storage. This size is a reasonable size for sharing the photo. To enable file sharing of a more detailed image, the developers of the JPEG format came up with a more sophisticated way of compressing data. They realized that the human eye cannot distinguish every possible shade of color or every detail; thus, they developed a technique that reduces a photo’s colors and complexity without the appearance of having done so. In other words, the only data eliminated in the JPEG technique is data that your eye would not

The popularity of cellular phones all over the world has simply exploded and you can’t go anywhere in the world, not even a poor country that does not even have hot water, where people are not walking around with cell phones. Of course, when you go buy a cell phone the vendor does not clue you into to anything other than the great benefits, however you should review some of the potential safety issues as well so you know all the benefits and drawbacks to owning a cellular phone.

Is there a Health Risk?
You may have seen on the news or read in the newspaper or even online about possible health risks from using cellular phones. However, to date there is no sound proof that cellular phones can cause health problems. Additionally, there is no sound proof that they do not. Cellular phones emit a radio frequency (RF), albeit small, that are microwaves when the cell phone is in use. Also, when the phone is in standby mode it emits even smaller levels of RF. So, the question is do these low levels of RF waves that are being emitted from the cellular phone produce health hazards? Currently the consensus is no, however it is widely known that high RF waves do cause health problems due to heating of the body’s tissues. But, the low level RF emissions are not enough to cause heating of the tissues so it does not cause a health risk, right? This is believed to be true and doctors and researchers are continually looking into the subject to detect whether or not cell phones pose a health risk to users or not. At the moment nothing has been discovered so you should be able to use your cell phone with peace of mind that you are not putting your health at risk.

How Will I Know if there is a Health Risk?
As you probably already know the FDA is responsible for reviewing drugs and health related products to ensure they are suitable for public consumption and use and will not cause additional health problems. At the moment the FDA does not review the safety of cellular phones, although it does have the obligation to do so if it is found certain, or all, cellular phones emit RF to the point of affecting the health of users. Although this has not occurred as of yet the FDA does suggest to cell phone manufacturers that they develop the phone in a way as to reduce and minimize RF to the user. Also, the FDA suggests to cell phone manufacturers that they continue studying any possible health effects that might result from the use of cellular telephones and that they be diligent informing consumers of any possible risks that might exist.

What do the Studies Say?
There have also been a variety of studies completed to determine how RF emissions from cellular phones might affect an individual’s health. Studies have been conducted on animals as well as epidemiology studies that do not have conclusive results. The studies on animals had flaws in the way the study was carried out and while exposure to low level RF emissions did show a likelihood to develop cancer in the brain or mouth these animals were already predisposed to developing these types of cancers despite the RF emissions so there is no way a cause and effect relationship can be drawn. Also, the studies had a variety of results that have not been recreated in other studies.

The epidemiolgoy studies did not show a cause and effect relationship between cancer and low lever RF emissions from cell phones for the short term. However, there is no way one can know for sure if the long term use of cell phones is risky or not because no long term studies have been conducted. Of course over time if many individuals start developing brain and mouth cancers after 20 years of talking on the cellular phone then there will be some obvious relationship. However, until the time there is some conclusive evidence as to whether or not cellular phones cause cancer or put an individual at risk for other types of health risks then more studies will be conducted.

What Next?
Studies are continually being conducted to try and determine if there is any relationship between RF emissions and health risks. Time will be one of the biggest factors to determine what, if any, health hazards might be associated with cellular phones. Also, the FDA is working to determine if there are any hazards and if so how to deal with them. If you have a cellular phone and are worried about RF emissions then you might consider using a handset instead of talking on the phone held up to your ear. The reason for this is the farther the cell phone is from your beady the less RF emissions your body will absorb and the less risk, if there is a risk, experienced due to the RF emissions.

This topic is still under debate and probably will be for some time. So, if you are a cell phone user you should do a little research on your own and determine if you believe cell phones pose a risk to your health or not. You can also learn some tricks to reduce the amount of RF emissions and limit your amount of time talking on your cell phone. Regardless, cell phones look like they are here to stay so if there is a health risk researchers need to determine it quickly and fix it so the rest of the world can continue on with their conversations.
