Hang Onto That 2 Dollar Bill

Last Updated: 2011/10/07

Today, when we go to a store many of us pay for our commodity by hard currency or cash, if we don’t have our credit cards with us. We are very intimate with the different money values that we see regularly. Or at least have a good idea of what they look like and there value. However, there is one type of money bill that is seen very rarely. This is the 2 dollar bill and because it is barely ever used or seen there are many stories that have developed about this bill. And to think that my kids haven’t even seen a 2 dollar bill.

These urban legends or folktales have all inspired the myth that the 2 dollar bill is not what you would conceive as being real money. Boy, is that the furthest from the truth. In fact the 2 dollar bill is now starting to be seen as a collectors item. For this rationality when people see a 2 dollar bill they will either regard it as being a fake or they will decide that it is so uncommon that they need to own this bill. Hence how it has become a collectors item.

Even though you will not see the 2 dollar bill all that much, there are some of these bills still in circulation today. Due to the collection of the 2 dollar bill the public has now started to see it fade from public sight. It is only when there is a severe deficiency of this bill that the Fed Money Reserve will start printing a new batch. What an interesting concept, hey folks we are out of this type of bill we better go and print a few more off. It isn’t really that simple, but the Federal Reserve does watch and regulate the money flow including 2 dollar bills.

How this works is that because there are not many people using these dollar bills there is no real need to print out a large sum of them. As this is the case the sum of 2 dollar bills that you can find are regarded as being used by by a very small population. The less times the Feds print the 2 dollar bill, the more valuable it becomes. The printing of this bill has seen a serious decrease over the last 10 to 20 years. This means a higher value for those of you that are interested in collecting this bill.

Since the 2 dollar bill is not thought of as being part of the monetary system there are few facilities or shops and other places to take the 2 dollar bill. but, I tell you now, hang onto that bill and put it into your collection. Alternatively you will find that various other items have been located in the sections where the 2 dollar bill inevitably use to go. There is another problem that you may run into when you try to use a 2 dollar bill. As so very few people have heard of a 2 dollar bill much less seen one, they may think that you are trying to play some type of game with them.

There are still others who may feel that you are spending fake money. Therefore if you do come over a 2 dollar bill you might want to hang on to it until you can switch it at the bank where they will not look at you funnily! Or better yet hang onto it and add it to your ever growing coin collection. this bill one day will no longer be printed by the feds (if it hasn’t already stopped) and will grow in value.

Patent Practitioners: Separating the Good from the Bad

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

If you choose to hire a patent practitioner, they will help you throughout the complex patent process. You may even consider granting them power of attorney over your patent application. This means they will be responsible for acting as a liaison between you and the USPTO in regards to your patent. In these instances, all the correspondence received from the USPTO will be handled through your patent practitioner. They will need to file all responses to Office actions, send in fees, etc…

Therefore, it’s imperative your patent practitioner keep in touch with you and let you know how the patent prosecution process is going. It is best if they are willing to send you copies of the correspondence they receive so you know exactly where you stand. The examination of a patent may take years, so a good practitioner will form a solid bond with you and follow through with all the paperwork, keeping you posted on any news.

This makes a patent practitioner’s job twofold. First, they must file a well written application, complete with all the required paperwork, and novel, descriptive claims resulting in the broadest patent protection possible (that way, it will be less likely for a competitor to infringe on your invention). Second, they must act as the liaison between you and the USPTO throughout the long and tedious patent prosecution process.

This second part is very important. If even one deadline is missed, your application will be abandoned. That means all the time and money you have spent up until then was for nothing. In addition, the profit potential for your invention can dwindle to nothing if you lose out on the patent.

The lesson is that if you choose to use a practitioner, you need to stay in touch with him or her and make sure they are doing their job. Do not just leave it all up to them – your invention is far too important. Even if you have a practitioner handle the correspondence, make sure you contact them frequently and let them know if you move – they may need to ask you questions, or they may need more money for fees that come up during the process.

The Safety And The Risks In Skydiving

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Skydiving is a sport that involves many risks. Safety and risks are different thing. While the risks are measured, the safety is judged. The safety can be defined as a personal or social acceptance of a given risk.

In what regards the risks, they are measured as quantities. The probability of something to happen combined with the severity of the repercussions give the risks. The probabilities and the severity are divided into categories. The probabilities have five such categories: Frequent, Probable, Occasional, Remote and Improbable and the severity of the action has four categories: Catastrophic, Critical, Marginal and Negligible. For instance, a rubber band breaking the risk is “frequent – negligible” while for a double malfunction the risk would be “remote – catastrophic”. “Occasional – catastrophic” or “occasional – critical” are the risks encountered most often for malfunctions.

In skydiving, a risk value can be assigned to any event, based on the given definition. Observation over the years and the measurements from the test drops should be the base for the value of a risk. Yet, this doesn’t always happen.

The perception of risk

The perception of risk is sometime done on a subjective base. The values of risks are higher in case of voluntary events within control of the beholder than in the case of mandatory events that put a person beyond control. Thus, skydiving presents a greater risk than breathing air.

The events followed by dreaded results or catastrophic consequences present a higher risk. The sports and occupations also have different values of risk depending on the amount of fatalities encountered.

The perceptions of risks can also be affected by the maturation of technology. Taking the example of the power plants, a coal power plant is less risky than a nuclear power plant because people know much more things about burning coal than about nuclear technology.

The risks are also directly connected to the complexity of the system. The difficulty to understand a system is given by its complexity and together with this difficulty; the necessity increases because only by a better acknowledgement of the system, the corrections and the ways of preventing events are obtained.

The assessment of risks

Understanding a system fully and without gaps will decrease the risks of unfortunate events. A system must have no secrets for the person that operates it because if there are things that are not understood, complications may appear if an event is generated by that unknown element. Also, in a system, not only its components should be well known, but the reasons of failure too. This is obtained through observation and continuous monitoring of the system’s performance. Risks can be reduced by prevention of failure or corrective plans. The causes for system failure can be human, mechanical or environmental.

The risks involved by skydiving

Values of risks can be given to any event in skydiving. The gear and technique knowledge in skydiving is the primary base of the risk value assessment. If a person knows the equipment, the parachute, the characteristics, the techniques and all the other factors involved by skydiving, he or she greatly reduces the risks of an event. If the equipment is very well known, the system performance monitoring is accurate and malfunctions can be discovered in time if they appear, decreasing thus the risks. Different ways to escape injuries also reduce the risks, therefore emergency procedures and alternative plans have been elaborated.

Understanding the gear, the parachute, its characteristics, acknowledging and using the controls properly and having preventing and correcting plans will reduce the risks and increase the effectiveness or risks assessment.

Chesterfield – a Brief History & Guide

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Chesterfield started out as a Roman fort and was built approximately 70 AD. The Romans probably settled here because the area was extremely rich in natural minerals like tin, lead and coal. The Roman fort later was discovered to have also been built on an old iron-age fort. It is believed that by the early 2nd century the Romans had no longer a need for the fort and moved on leaving it abandoned.

The town was later named by the Saxons. Their name for a Roman fort was caester and they called the wide open fields where cattle grazed a Feld. So when the Saxons arrived and settled they called the area Caester Feld which by the 10th Century was changed to Chesterfield. By now though, the small settlement had swiftly grown into a thriving village. It took two centuries for Chesterfield to become a thriving town. A Charter granted by King John in 1204 gave the Lord of The Manor the right to hold regular markets and even a fair, which lasted for 8 days during September, once a year.

In 2004 Chesterfield’s “Open Air Market” celebrated it’s 800th Anniversary of it’s official opening.

As time went on life was not always perfect in Chesterfield. It’s main industry in the middle ages was the making of wool although leather was prominent too with plenty of Skinners, Tanners, Glovers and Saddlers. The wool industry thrived until the 17th Century before dying out but the leather work continued to prosper until the 18th Century.

None of this was to help with the many diseases that were around though. Leprosy hit the area so bad that a Leper hostel dedicated to St Leonard had to be built. Then just like everywhere else in the sixteenth century the Black Death struck. There was a severe outbreak in 1586-1587and unluckily, Chesterfield was hit again in 1608.

Chesterfield was slightly oblivious to the industrial revolution of the 18th Century but slowly continued to grow with the help of better communications helped by the building of “TurnPike “roads, the chesterfield canal and the arrival of rail, courtesy of George Stephenson, who lived at Tapton House from 1838 – 1848 and is now buried in the Holy Trinity Church. In 1892 the boundary of the borough was changed and the nearby settlement of Brampton became part of Chesterfield. This was the first of many changes and a sign that Chesterfield was a thriving and growing town. By this time it had its own independent police force and fire brigade.

Many more changes were soon to come along starting with the introduction of Electric street lights and trams, which were soon ditched, as Chesterfield finally caught up with it’s neighbouring towns and joined in with the industrial revolution. The 20th Century had arrived.

With the introduction of Council houses in the 20’s and 30’s, the further boundary changes bringing Hasland and Newbold into the folds of Chesterfield and the building of the new Town Hall(1938),Pomegranate Theatre ( 1949) and The Nth Derbyshire Royal Hospital (1984), Chesterfield started to look much the same as it does today.

To date Chesterfield boasts, as well as it’s traditional markets, a Shopping centre opened in 1981 as well as an even newer Shopping centre opened in 2000 as tourism of the peak district and the retail industry have taken precedent over the failing manufacturing industry.

So there you have it a brief history of Chesterfield. One now wonders what will the current hi tech world of computers and the internet have in store for this Historic Market Town.

Discover the past, present and future in Dubai

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

If you’re seriously interested in knowing about Dubai, you need to think beyond the basics.

This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Dubai.

The rich culture of the desert city of Dubai draws on its ancient Arabian heritage,

vast modern technology and cosmopolitan luxuries. For centuries a land devoted mainly to

herding and trade, Dubai

was rocketed into modern times by the discovery of oil just off of its coast in

1966. Enormous riches funded by oil

production have produced a native population which, in the main, is well

educated, healthy, highly paid and liberal minded. Tourism is actively courted

in Dubai, particularly in the impressive Palm Islands

development.

Touted as the eighth world wonder, Palm Island is a an incredible tribute to

engineering, design, and absolute opulence. Palm

Island – Deira is the largest of the

three Palm Islands.

A unique man-made phenomenon, the Palm Islands

can be seen from space by the naked eye.

A trunk, a 41- frond crown, and a water- breaking crescent island form Palm Island

– Deira. Nearly eight thousand villas

and apartment homes, private and public beaches, shopping, recreation and

sports facilities are included in the plans for this incredible development.

Fantastic resorts and attractions are also

available for those looking for the ultimate upscale vacation

experience.

Sport is a huge part of the culture of Dubai, and is reflected in the many

entertainment options open to visitors of the city. Polo fields and golf

courses abound. The richest horse racing event in the world, The Dubai World

Cup, is run on a Dubai

track and attracts visitors from around the world. Water sports from the most adventurous to the

most tranquil are available in the warm waters off of Dubai’s white sand beaches. Viewing some of the region’s more traditional

sporting events such as camel racing, dhow sailing and falconry should also not

be missed.

Sophistication is one of the hallmarks of the Dubai – and larger United Arab Emerates –

culture. World- class cosmopolitan restaurants sit next to local establishments

serving the best in local cuisine and fresh juices. Indian, Lebanese, and Thai flavors are often

featured in the most popular restaurants. Many of Dubai’s best restaurants are inside of, or

within easy walking distance of, the city’s hotels, which are allowed to serve

alcohol despite the city’s Islamic roots. Prices range from very affordable to

astronomically high, depending on one’s tastes, and menus and service are most

often available in English as well as the native Arabic.

So far, we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about Dubai. You may decide

that the following information is even more interesting.

Shopping in Dubai

is amongst the best in the world, with designer boutiques offering the most

exclusive fashions and products to savvy shoppers. Jewelery, vehicles, electronics,

décor items and sports equipment are also common purchases, often offered at

low prices. There are no local taxes on purchases, and for those skillful at

bartering, the souks (markets) offer vast opportunities for bargains on

indigenous goods. Must-see sightseeing sites in Dubai

include the Gold Souk, the Deira Covered Souk, the Spice Souk, the Palm Island

development, Al Boom Tourist Village, Bedouin Village,

the Dubai World Trade Centre, and the Jumeirah Mosque. Archaeological

enthusiasts will enjoy the Al Ghusals, Al Sufooh and Jumeirah excavation sites

featuring graveyards and artifacts more than 1,000 years

old.

Dubai‘s

ultra- contemporary architecture, panoramic ocean vistas, beautiful beaches,

and historical sites are all fetching subjects for photography buffs, but it is

wise to refrain from taking photos of government facilities, sea- and air

ports, and military installations. Permission should also be asked and granted

before photographing the local population, particularly Muslim women, who may

be offended at having their photo taken.

Highly accessible to international traffic, Dubai is served by 90 airlines. Major

European centers such as London are only seven hours away by plane with regular

in- and out- going flights.

Arabic is the official language of Dubai, but written and spoken English is

heavily used in the business and commercial sectors as well as in the tourism

and entertainment industries. Dubai is a progressive

Islamic country. Respect for local customs and religious traditions is expected

and appreciated, but not to the extremes of some Islamic- ruled areas. In return, the Dubai people offer tolerance for differing

lifestyles. Women are not discriminated

against and may travel freely unescorted.

Western visitors are able to dress as they like, however modesty in

clothing is recommended. Limit very short, tight, or revealing items of

clothing. The local population has adopted some styles of western dress, but it

is most common to see men wearing the traditional white dishdasha or khandura

robe and gutra (headdress), and women wearing modest black abaya robes and a

head scarf over their regular clothing. These styles of dress suit the

religious requirements of the Islamic population and offer protection from the

hot desert sun.

Dubai‘s weather is picture perfect for most of

the year, combining the best features of a sub-tropical, arid climate. Rain is

very infrequent, falling an average of only five days each year (mostly during

the winter season), but the temperature can vary by nearly 40 degrees Celsius

between 10 degrees and 48 degrees Celsius.

Demand for property in Dubai has surged in recent years, driven

by a burgeoning population of nearly four million people and the recent ability

of foreigners to hold real- estate. Dubai’s safe lifestyle,

positive tourism investment potential, favorable tax rates and perceived high

property value have all contributed to the current interest in buying property

in the city. In addition to the variety of hotels, resorts and other standard

tourist accommodation options, private accommodations from apartments to luxury

villas located on secluded beaches are available for sale and rent in

Dubai.

If you learned anything new about Dubai in this article, you should file the

article where you can find it again.

Visit Budapest On The Cheap!

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Budapest is a grand Central European city with a rich history, stunning architecture and tons of things to do On The Cheap. Where else can you see a world-class ballet at one of Europes most beautiful opera houses for just $4 USD? Follow our tips below to save money when visiting this glorious city on the Danube.

Cheap Accommodation:

Grand Hostel, Hüvösvölgyi út 69. Located steps from a tram stop and on the lushly green side of the city, this hostel is one of the few in Budapest to offer single-gender dorms. Recently remodeled, travelers can choose from 4 or 6 bed dorms or double/triple private rooms. Free Internet and parking available, and the hostel boasts a beautiful bar area and outdoor garden.

We also like Red Bus Hostel (and Hostel 2). They have 4-6 bed dorms as well as reasonably priced singles and doubles. Free breakfast and kitchen facilities are available. Bonus: A secondhand English bookstore is the perfect place to buy and/or sell reading material for your trip!

Free Things To Do:

St. Stephen’s Basilica. A grand cathedral in true European fashion complete with gilded edges. Guided tours are available for a fee, but it is free to go inside and walk around. A breathtaking sight at night.

Fishermans Bastion. In the Castle District, this structure has 7 towers symbolizing the seven tribes that came to Hungary in 896. The walkways provide stunning views over the Danube towards the Pest side of the city. Free to walk along the lower levels, small charge to go to upper walkways (no real extra view up there).

Castle District. It is easy to spend the better part of a day up here, with Fisherman’s Bastion, St. Matthews Church and the Buda Castle all within a stones throw of each other. The district is perched high on a hill above the Danube and the surrounding neighborhoods are a joy to walk though.

Margaret Island. A lush oasis in the middle of the city, this space offers trails, a bird refuge, lots of foliage, some ruins and a luxury hotel.

City Park. Another large park, City Park is home to the zoo, Szechnyi Baths, a castle, Heroes Square (including two museums) and several miles of walking paths. The zoo and baths charge admission fees, but it is free to walk through the park and castle grounds.

Cheap Things To Do in Budapest:

Not only are there lots of free things to do in Budapest, but many attractions are very affordable. Currently the exchange rate is about 195 Hungarian Forints to 1 US Dollar. Here are some of our favorites:

Opera House, Andrassy Ut. One of the most opulent in Europe, this grand building is a must see during your stay in Budapest. Even if you just step inside the lobby, the Opera House is an amazing sight. In the foyer alone there are marble pillars, a black-and-white inlaid tile floor and a gorgeous gold and fresco ceiling. Ballet, symphony, and concert programs run all year long and great seats can be had for $4 USD.

Take A Bath. Budapest is famous for it’s Turkish style baths and there are several throughout the city. Our favorite is the Szechnyi (Chain) bathhouse both for its decor and location. This delight sits among City Park, one of several attractions there. Inside, the building is breathtakingly decorated and houses over 25 pools. Some are warm, cold, indoor, outdoor, or scented with eucalyptus or other scents. Massages and other services are also available for an additional fee. Entrance fees range from $5-10 USD.

Budapest is truly a city that should not be missed. It’s an interesting mix of old and new and a great time can be had on a minimal budget.

Packing Basics: The One Thing you Forgot

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

You packed up the truck, checked over your gear, and headed out into the outdoors for a great weekend or week of camping. Then it hits you: was it the lantern? The fishing tackle? Your favorite hunting knife? What was the one thing that you forgot? It doesn’t seem to be a question of whether you forgot something but rather what it was that was left behind and the relative importance of it. Maybe you have twenty different flashlights from twenty different trips, and you didn’t remember to put one of them in your truck. Whatever that one thing is, it may surely get left behind unless you plan ahead.

One of the most basic and most helpful things you can do to save yourself some aggravation and some trouble is to make a trip list. Write down every little thing that you think you will need on your trip, from matches to underwear, and write it early! Trying to make a list the night before you head out will mean enduring the same mental scramble that you would go through in the morning. Instead, begin making your list as soon as you decide to go on the trip and add the things you need to it each time you think of something. You will be so on top of the contents of your pack that you may even know the number of raisins included in your trail mix!

The second part of this plan is implementation. This means reading and following the list when you are packing your car or backpack. Flashlight? Check. Pack it, then cross it off or highlight it or whatever works for you. It is key that you don’t erase anything though. You can use this master list again when you are preparing for your next outdoor experience. In fact, as soon as you get back add anything that it would have been nice to have so that you will indeed have “it” next time. For instance, did you fall in the creek and have just enough socks for the weekend? Make a note to bring extra socks on the next trip.

There is a third hint that goes along with the list idea and that is to pack before the night before or morning of your trip. This will help to ensure that you are not running around in a panic trying to get through the list before your ride comes to pick you up or it gets too dark to head out. Start piling up your camping equipment four or five days before your departure date so that you have time to remember where you stored the sleeping bags and cooler or to find out that you need to buy batteries for the flashlights.

The earlier you pack the better. If you can, it would be a good idea to start loading your vehicle early as well. However, don’t leave things in your truck bed overnight unless you have a locked garage. Otherwise you may find your equipment missing in the morning. For added assurance, you may want to tape a note to your own windshield so that you will not forget to throw in your cooler, the table lantern, or the family tent. If you are going on an excursion where you will need to bring food, you should also make a grocery list and stash it in the car the week before you leave for your trip. This way you have the list with you when you stop at the grocery store on the way home from work. You will also have the list with you when you stop to pick up cooler items on the way out of town.

So you have made your list, checked it twice, and packed and re-packed your bags for the weekend. Pile them near the door or in one central location to minimize last minute stress and reduce loading time. Put the list in the glove compartment of the truck so that you can use it to re-pack the truck when you are heading home from your trip. You wouldn’t want to leave with one less flashlight, again.

Living the dream in a Pacific Paradise

Last Updated: 2011/10/06

Swelling and recessing four times a day according to the rhythms of the moon, the Pacific Ocean breaks on the shores of five separate continents, but you can hardly find place so beautiful like Cannon Beach. With panoramic views of Haystack Rock, Tillamook Rock Lighthouse and Silver Point, the sandy beach provides the setting for romantic strolls, family fun and outdoor adventure.

The town was named after a cannon found on the beach in 1922. The cannon were washed ashore due to the 1846 shipwreck of the USS Shark trying to leave Columbia River. Currently around 1600 people live in the town but it is the favorite place for many more in Northwest.

Although there are numerous hotels in Cannon Beach the best way to enjoy its spirit is to rent an ocean front house. Having your own privacy and the direct beach access will make your vacation more than pleasant. You can toast marshmallows around a cracking beach fire, fly a kite or simply sit back on the deck and enjoy the remarkable scenery. If you take a look at some of the vacation rental web sites like TravelWeaver.net you will find lot of these.

Cannon Beach is also known for its reputation for art. More than 20 art galleries feature the work of coastal artists as well as original work by nationally recognized artists. In addition Cannon Beach is home to performing arts, live theater, music festivals and literary arts. Attending a workshop will not only improve your skills in writing, painting or photography but will be useful and relaxing way to spend your time.

Cannon Beach is also an excellent place for the outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, biking, fishing or horseback riding can open new horizons for you. Ecola State Park and Oswald West State Park offer one of the best rainforest hikes in the region. For biking fans the Oregon Coast Bike Trail along Highway 101 offers fabulous views of the entire Oregon coast the best of which is south of Cannon Beach to Arcadia Beach or Hug Point. There are also several family friendly trails around where the whole family can enjoy the nature.

One of the favorite outdoor activities in Cannon Beach is horseback riding. Offered by one of the oldest businesses in the town, Sea Ranch Stable, which operates since 1927, horses and guided rides are available between mid-May and Labor Day. You can enjoy the historic Ecola Creek or the stunning views of Chapman Point and Haystack Rock. At a minus low tide night rides to Silver Point will take your breath.

For the young people Cannon Beach is just 7 miles away from Seaside. Surfing there provides thrill seekers unique connection with the power of nature while the three rivers offer enjoyment for touring kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. Lot of cafes and restaurants as well as the shopping experience and attractions in Seaside Carousel Mall add to the live of the city.

If you ever consider visiting the West Coast and want to experience the beauty of Oregon you must visit Cannon Beach – you will live your dream in this Pacific Paradise.

Fly on budget

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Looking at the oil prices lately you may decide to skip this year’s vacation because the flight tickets will cost you a fortune. But what about flying for free from London to Barcelona or for just 130$ from US to Germany? This will be perfect deal if you know how to find it.

It took almost a decade after the European Open-Sky Treaty of 1992 enabled airlines to fly anywhere they wished in the EU without government approval to see the business booming. But this phenomenon is observed not only in Europe – low-cost airlines are available all over the world and you can find a comprehensive list and traveler’s tools on TravelWeaver.net.

The low-cost airlines are also known as budget, low-price, discount or no-frills airlines. In order to keep the prices low they provide ticket-less travel, online ticket sales and have no offices internationally; most of them don’t provide free food or beverages as well as in-flight magazines; also they don’t participate in frequent flyer programs and don’t have club lounges. One of the main characteristics of the low-cost airlines is that they have limited coverage and use secondary airports, which are less convenient for commuting.

Although the price looks really attractive there are also some catches and you need to be careful with the low-cost airlines. For example there is no possibility to reschedule the ticket and you will lose all the money if you try to cancel it; the baggage limit can also be lower than on the traditional carriers. In all the cases you need to calculate the price for transportation to the secondary airport and plan for the additional time you will need to get there.

One of the oversea carriers that offer cheap flights is Condor. They offer discount flights from Frankfurt to many destinations around the world. You can fly with them to Las Vegas, Orlando or LA for around 130$ (99 €). There is one more ThomasCook company that offers cheap flights oversee while most of the low-cost airlines like Rynair and Air Berlin offer only intra-continental flights.

The key for cheap travel is to plan you trip early and monitor the prices for some time before you buy. If you go to Rynair’s web site for example you can even find tickets for free depending on when you want to fly. If you have planned your vacation early you may find really good deals with traditional carriers too. Look for flights at least couple of months before your schedule your vacation. Also subscribe for the airlines or travel sites newsletters because then you will receive timely information for deals and offers.

Also keep in mind that the travel search engines do not comprehensively search the Web and retrieve the lowest prices. Some airlines do not permit third parties to book their seats and others are launching a lobbying effort intent on overturning the regulations to advertise the actual price they would charge the customer.

Buying the trip from two different carriers may make sense sometimes if the overall price is lower that the combined price for both of them. Very often for example you can fly very cheap in one direction and need to pay expensive ticket on the way back. Look for prices from other carrier in this case and just combine the whole trip. I personally combined trips from Condor and Continental to fly from Frankfurt/Main to Seattle and the overall fair was less than 300 $ while the traditional carriers like BA, Air France or KLM would have charged me 4 times more.

Also one good source for checking air prices is Farecast which compares the airline tickets and makes projections of the prices. They base their algorithm on a comprehensive analysis of prices from the past. They are pretty new start-up and their coverage is not very comprehensive at the moment but you may consider using them in the future.

Don’t take the conservative approach and rely only on one source of information, Internet allows you to do the research you need to find the best offer and take the most of your vacation.

Folding Bike

Folding Bike

It finally happened. We had been planning for it for years and all our friends knew it would happen soon enough and recently it did. No, not the adoption of our baby boy but instead, the avalanche of stuff that came with him.
One of the best things about my job is that I can ride my bike to it. For the past few years I have saved the bus fare (and hopefully a little bit of the earth) by riding my mountain bike to work. But my mountain bike is very big. New York apartments are very small. So, now with the new little guy and all his gear: the strollers, the cribs, the toys, something had to go. I took my big mountain bike to work and gave it to one of my students (It was old and not very expensive, the bike, not the student!) and got myself a folding bike.
My life has been changed. Yes, yes, the new father thing has changed me, but this new bike. Wow. I feel so cool whipping it out and dashing across the city every morning. I feel like a superhero. And does it whip and dash!
Last year there was a perfect storm moment here in New York for bikes. Gas prices shot up to crazy levels, the buzz about global warming started to really get some traction, and we had a subway and bus strike. All of a sudden there were bikes everywhere. And as I said above, our apartments are small, tiny little things, it would only be a second before bikes followed suit. They were everywhere, these cute, slightly clownish gizmos careening around taxis and down the paths along the Hudson.
Folding bikes have been around for years but they have been a badge of very aggressive environmentalists or the English. Here in America the foldies have mainly been stowed away in campers or brought on sail boats. But their time has come. There is a range of high quality, easy-to-fold bikes with wide price points. (Everywhere from $300.00 to $1,400). Today’s high energy lifestyles have been waiting for these sweet machines.
A folding bike would allow folks who commute by train to save that bothersome next leg of their journey and get in a little exercise too. You bike to the train station, fold the thing up and get on the train. Unfold it and bike it from the station. No need to lock it up outside your office, just take it in.
The business traveler could explore his or her new city, get some exercise and not have to lug a big bulky bike around. A folding bike can easily be checked as regular piece of luggage.
Campers and boaters have long known the delight of a foldy. Any place where space and size is a concern is the place for a folding bike.
A folding bike may not ride exactly like a full size bike. The wheels are smaller so going up hills means you push a little harder. The balance takes some getting used to as well. But after a little practice you feel quite comfortable, even nimble and light. Some very tall people may have to have one custom made ($$$) though. The higher end models come very close to replicating the ride and performance of a full-sized bike. Some fold smaller and more quickly than others. Some have only three gears, some come fully equipped with bells, lights and racks. The world of folding bikes is broad enough that bike novices or hard core riders both will find what they need.

Family Vacations Sure Have Changed

Family Vacations Sure Have Changed

Family vacations sure have changed. No self-respecting parent today would dare put that minivan into reverse and head out onto the interstate without making sure the kids had at least five different electronic diversionary devices: The iPod, the individual DVD players (God forbid the 7 year old and the 9 year old watch the same Disney movie!), the Gameboys, even the phone that lets you play Asteroids. Constant calm; no crying and again, God forbid, no boredom). That’s the goal of the vacationing parent with kids. If its to Epcot or Evansville to see the folks, a child not occupied is a danger.
But this wasn’t always the case. There was a time when a six hour trip with nothing but a rousing game of liscense plate bingo, some bug juice and a few sandwiches wrapped in wax paper was a vacation unto itself. Actually I have to amend that. This trip about which I speak did have a very high tech device used to keep the kids occupied. Childrens’ stories, read into a cassette tape recorder! We kids loved it.
So, this trip to Maine camping. Remember camping? No, not the kind with GPS and microfibre clothing. Camping! With musty cotton canvas bags. Flannel sleeping bags from Bean’s and Coleman propane lanterns that always were brighter than you could ever imagine.
The simplest things were the whole experience really. The main goal may have been to canoe down a river or on the lake or maybe even bike. But with none of the intrusions of home (even before cell phones and computers) the small, little things took on grand and almost spiritual proportions. Getting up and making breakfast: coffee over a fire or on a cranky gas camp stove, drunk in stainless steel cups, Fruit Loops and Honey Smacks eaten right our of the tiny boxes that you cut open and poured in powdered milk, bacon and eggs, and Snakpak chocolate pudding. These were things that were rarely if ever (the sugared cereals specifically) eaten at home and so tasted like pure ambrosia out amongst the pines. Walking to the shower house with your bucket of toiletries: Ivory soap and flip flops and Deep Woods Off created olfactory memories for a lifetime.
What did we do out in the Maine woods? Nothing. That was the point. Simply living out of a tent and out of your element made you slow down and relax. We didn’t even know it. Today one might spend a bushell of money to do the same things at a Canyon Ranch or Club Med. An entire day could be spent with a kid in the woods with a Peterson’s Bird book and a pair of binoculars. But then again the day could also be spent just hanging out by the campsite figuring out how to make the next meal in one pot.
Now all this nostalgia did have a downside. A family camp trip could really go south if it rained. You were always trying to stay dry and usually not successfully. Today the tents are better and easier to put up and the games (travel Scrabble and travel chess) you can pack would make a rainy day inside one tolerable. Heavy cotton clothing was pretty awful wet. A quick drying shirt or a little fleece would have certainly taken the chill off.

Stress Relief Music – more than just a pretty sound

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

These days, almost everyone is affected to some degree by stressful conditions and apparently, more and more people are searching for ways to find relief. To prove this to yourself, do a Google search on the word-phrase “stress anxiety” and you’ll find results in the millions. Next, add the word “music” (stress anxiety music) and millions more results will appear.

As you’ll see, there’s clearly a lot of interest in relieving stress and music is becoming more and more acceptable as a way to accomplish that goal.

It is well known that certain types of music have a calming, soothing and uplifting influence upon mind and body. However, not all music is equal in its efficacy and applicability. Why? Because listening to music is a very subjective experience and the reality is that sometimes, a piece of music may work well for one person but not as well for another.

Effectiveness depends upon so many technological, physiological and psychological variables that it is often very difficult if not impossible to determine exactly what it is in music that causes human response. Thus, the only meaningful measurement we have is the degree of feeling we experience as we listen. This is how it has been for centuries

Obviously, ‘one-size-fits-all’ is not an option. It’s just as well. There’s already too many digital cookie-cutter sound bytes being passed off as music for stress – and listeners should be more aware that effective music is much more than a compilation of pretty sounds with suggestive titles.

Among its many attributes, truly effective music for stress contains an outstanding characteristic; an inherent ability to alter human perspective. It does this by creating a relaxing, uplifting ambience that gradually helps the listener to deal with stressful conditions in a more positive and constructive manner.

When listening to music, most people assume that the human ear does all the work by registering the sum total of musical information. Up to a point this is correct, but feelings generated by a musical experience are the end result of a more complex physiological and psychological process – an end result that does not immediately become apparent until after the fact.

What about people who are deaf? Can they appreciate music? Yes, but to do so they “listen” differently. There is evidence that skin perceptiveness and cellular resonance also play a part in how they perceive sound. If this is true, the implication is that deaf or not, we all perceive, experience and evaluate music on more than one sensory level.

A case in point is Evelyn Glennie, the famous deaf percussionist who performs with various symphony orchestras worldwide. She does not hear music – she feels it. For more information, do a Google search on “deaf percussionist” (without the quotation marks).

Returning to the subject of stress-relief music, some people might say that the music was “peaceful, soothing, beautiful, uplifting” or something similar. Others might comment that it had no effect – “it just put me to sleep”. Either way, the music caused something positive to happen, even though the person sleeping was not consciously aware of it.

Summertime Fun – Spending Time With Your Children Doesn’t Have to Cost a Fortune

Last Updated: 2011/10/05

Spring is in the air and the summer months are right around the corner. Another year of school is under our children’s belts and within a matter of weeks, they will be set free to enjoy the warm sunshine and the seemingly endless summer nights.

Summer vacation not only brings change to our children’s schedule, it also greatly affects our routine as moms. Many of us can find great freedom in our typical workday by including our children in our tasks. This allows us to have more time to spend together to take advantage of the fun activities that bring the playful side out of us.

Try to make these daily chores fun and rewarding for your children. A great way of rewarding them is by informing them that they will get to go to a certain destination once all the chores are completed. Our goal is to get the work done as quickly and efficiently as possible and it is amazing how well our expectations are met when the children know there is fun waiting on the other side of the door!

Now, if you are anything like me, you are probably on a budget. One of the wonderful aspects of living in the country is the fact that we don’t have to spend a truckload of money to have fun. The following is a list of activities anyone can enjoy on any budget. The important thing is to spend time with our children. It isn’t necessarily the money that makes them feel loved.

Fly a Kite – Children find kites magical and there’s nothing like the satisfaction that comes with finally getting that kite up in the air and sailing smoothly!

Grab a Pair of Roller Skates – Haven’t skated in a while? Grab those oldies but goodies and dust them off! Your kids will love the laughter that will come alive when you begin to rock-n-roll! If you don’t have any skates, they are relatively inexpensive at any sporting goods store.

Plant an Herb Garden– Purchase some seeds, soil and small pots at your local nursery. The watering and anticipation will continue for days. It’s so much fun to watch the children’s eyes light up when they finally see their first sprouts and even better when they get to taste their first meal with their fresh home grown herbs.

Make a Floral Bouquet – If you don’t have your own flower garden, be sure to get permission from the owner of the garden. Anyone living in a rural area has plenty of wildflowers to choose from and can create a beautiful bouquet with your children’s signature of creativity.

Do a Pedicure Swap – There’s nothing like having a foot rub. Grab the lotions and potions and put those little hands to work. They’ll love having their feet treated like royalty and you’ll be surprised at the great conversation you’ll have along the way!

Spa Treatment – Boys and girls alike will enjoy a mud mask and skin exfoliation. They love the textures of the products and especially enjoy having mud on their face. Honestly, put on your robes and create a memory that will last a lifetime. Make a Sandcastle – If you live near the coast, take a trip to the beach and let your creative juices flow. Make sure to bring your sunscreen.

Take a Hike – The fresh air does a body good. Find a trail and enjoy a bit of nature. Pack a lunch for an outdoor picnic. Don’t forget the bug spray and the sunscreen!

There are many more adventures for you to enjoy without spending a lot of money. For those of use with multiple children, we’ll take all the freebies we can get. With all these great ideas in mind, go and enjoy your summer. You’re kids will thank you for it!

Take your Grandparents on a long Walk to the Fishing Hole

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

I have previously written about the power of exercise and omega-3s to protect the brain and improve function. Several more studies, released this week, added support for methods to keep elderly brains fit and agile.

Exercise Improves Brain Function

The first, published in the Journal of Gerontology and highlighted in the Wall Street Journal, demonstrates that a few hours of aerobic exercise a week helps keep brains young. The study followed three groups of adults, aged 60-79. One group performed aerobic training by walking around a gym for an hour a day, three days a week. The second group performed non-aerobic training by stretching and doing some resistance exercises. The third group did not exercise.

The study found that after only three months, the aerobic exercise group (but neither of the other groups) increased their grey matter in frontal brain regions that control higher functions, like memory, multi-tasking, focus and decision-making. The aerobic group also increased the volume of white matter tracks that cross the brain and carry communication signals between the two brain halves. The researchers likened the changes that occurred over the three-month exercise period as equivalent to making the brain three years younger!

Exercise Increases Independence

A second study published in the same issue of the Journal of Gerontology showed that seniors enrolled in an exercise program improved their physical fitness and independence level over those that were simply ‘educated’ about healthy living. After 6 – 12 months in the program, seniors that received physical fitness training were able to walk longer distances at higher speeds than those that just received information about exercise and nutrition. The study cited the importance of increasing independence in senior citizens in an age where medical science is extending the average life span of our population. Committing to healthy lifestyle choices will help us live longer and not just die slower.

Omega-3s Decrease Dementia

Finally, a third study was the most recent in a string of evidence touting the benefits of fish for brain health. This recent study actually looked at the levels of DHA, an omega-3 fat obtained from fish, in the blood of about 900 seniors (average age of 76). They showed that seniors with higher levels of the omega-3 fat in their blood had the lowest chance of dementia from Alzheimer’s disease or other reasons. In fact, the seniors in the top 25% of blood omega-3 content were about 50% less likely to succumb to the debilitating cognitive disease. The average intake of fish in these top performers was about 3 servings per week or 180 mg of DHA per day, which can be obtained from supplements.

These studies all sum up the importance of lifestyle choices on healthy brains and bodies in the later years. So when you see your grandparents this holiday season, plan a fishing trip. Dust off the poles and reels and take them for a walk down to the creek. A little aerobic activity, some fresh air and a dose of omega-3s will help them stay mentally and physically healthy.

Wedding and Honeymoon on Charming Santa Catalina Island

Last Updated: 2011/10/04

The most popular way to get to Catalina is aboard a boat from Catalina Express. They offer about 30 trips a day to Avalon from San Pedro, Dana Point, and Long Beach by the Queen Mary. Trips from San Pedro take just over an hour, and trips from Long Beach or Dana Point take about an hour and a half. Island Express Helicopter Service will deliver up to six passengers to Avalon in 15 minutes. You will enjoy the unbeatable views of the island, the mainland, and sometimes whales and dolphins.

Catalina Island is often called the “island of romance.” There is no more romantic place to spend your wedding day than inside the Catalina Casino Grand Ballroom. The Casino has been the focal point of Santa Catalina Island entertainment since it opened in 1929. Restored to its original condition, this circular white structure is considered one of the finest examples of art deco architecture anywhere.

The Catalina Casino Ballroom is available year round for private events, and includes these services: kitchen and catering facilities; tables, chairs, linens, and silver; an elevated stage, raised seating around the dance floor, 1,400-person capacity, and a vintage full-service bar. Their sales staff can be contacted at 310-510-7497.

For a smaller wedding, you may want to consider The Avalon Hotel. Their rooftop deck offers panoramic views of Avalon Harbor and the charming city of Avalon. Both the rooftop deck and the garden courtyard (featuring a koi pond, exotic plantings and romantic landscaping) can accommodate 30 people. They offer Buy One Night and Get One Night free with their Internet specials. They will also give everyone in your party free tickets to the Catalina Island Museum. The museum is located on the ground floor of the Casino Building, and explores the island’s rich cultural heritage.

One of the many wedding planners on the island can help you with catering, wedding cakes, entertainment, florists, officiants, photographers and transportation.

After the ceremony and reception, you will find most of the city’s activity is centered along Crescent Avenue. You will notice that vivid art deco tiles adorn the avenue’s planters and fountains. This coveted artwork was fired on the island by the now defunct Catalina Tile Company. Most restaurant and shops are easily reached on foot. Common forms of transportation are bicycles and golf carts, which can be rented from shops along Crescent Avenue.

In addition to shopping, dining, hiking, fishing and sunbathing, there is the Casino Point Underwater Park where sea animals cruise around kelp forests along the sandy bottom. It’s a terrific site for scuba diving and snorkeling. The shallow waters of Lover’s Cove are also good for snorkeling. Scuba and snorkeling equipment can be rented on or near Green Pleasure Pier.

Plan Ahead and make your overnight guests feel right at home

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

When you find out that you are going to have some guests who will be staying overnight at your home during the upcoming holidays, you feel obliged to make sure that they have a great and comfortable stay at your residence. Early planning efforts and forethought must therefore be carried out in advance to avoid disappointment to every one anticipating for a great company so that both your family and your guests are able to enjoy the comfort of your sanctuary.

The first thing that crosses your mind when it comes to serving valued guests during the coming holiday would be your home decoration. If you feel that your home lacks the feeling of coziness and comfort that you wish to provide for your guests, you can add few Christmas trees around your house with colourful lights and allure of gifts to enliven the atmosphere. In the course of setting up such decorative ornaments, the chances that they might get broken by little kids may be likely to happen in unexpected circumstances. The crucial point in your planning is not to worry about the unexpected but concentrate on your efforts to ensure your customers are properly served in great comfort.

After proper decoration inside and outside of your house, you can jump start on cleaning up the guest room where your customers will be settling during their stay at your home. If you reckon that ordinary decoration is not enough for the guest room, you can always add little pieces of decorative items to make the room more outstanding. Whether the stay will be merely a couple of days or several long weeks, a drawer or cabinet will be useful for your company for arranging and putting away their personal belongings. With regards to the guest bathroom, you must ensure that it is properly cleaned and is sufficiently stocked up with plenty of toilet necessities such as toilet paper, shampoo, bath lotion, clean towels, toothpaste and others.

In addition to lovely decorations of your home and guest room, you must ensure that your house is never lack of enough games and entertainment for your guests during their stay. In the meantime the adults are entertained at any times, you should make sure that the younger children of the guests are not left alone and wondering what to do next. It is best to keep them busy with plenty of Playstation games, exciting movies, board games and also colouring books, barbies and Lego for all to involve in the activities. We can prompt the children to have a competition in building the fastest and most beautiful Christmas gift of their own using various craft materials or the most meaningful Christmas picture that you can decorate in your house this holiday. Outside of home, you can engage your guests in various other fun and interesting activities from watching the local Christmas parade to nights out caroling at various destinations.

Due to different unforeseen circumstances, your guests may require special accommodation needs, specific diets or that they may be allergic to certain food such as seafood and other areas as well as level of attention. As a host, we must be responsible for the general health and wellness of the guests during their stays at our residences and as much as possible, within our areas of knowledge and information, to prevent any mishaps or undesirable event unfolding as a result of our action or inaction. No matter how embarrassing we may feel by directly asking our guests of any special attentions needed for them, they will definitely appreciate the thoughtfulness and kind attention for care for their welfare.

Saving Iceland

Last Updated: 2011/10/03

At one time in the 1920s, international companies wanted to buy land near Gullfoss, in the southwestern quarter of Iceland, and build a hydroelectric plant there. Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of a local farmer, helped lead the opposition to the plant. As a protest she walked all the way to Reykjavík and even threatened to throw herself over the falls if the sale went through. Although the government did not intervene, she and her fellow opponents prevailed, and the land was given over to a nature preserve.

Iceland’s scenery has been shaped by fire and ice: it is a frozen land that is always letting off steam. More than 200 volcanoes, U-shaped valleys, jagged lava fields, hot springs and geysers and the largest icecap in Europe – bigger than all the mainland European glaciers put together – go to create a rugged, bizarre landscape unlike anything else on Earth. About 80% of Iceland’s land is lava desert, glaciers or lakes; the only arable areas are on the coast. Of the 300,000 or so Icelanders who sparsely populate this island, some two-thirds live in the capital, Reykjavik.

Until recently, the Tómasdóttir story was a one-off. Icelanders have been so used to having clean air, clean water, clean everything that they scarcely noticed when these marvellous assets were threatened.

Things Are Changing – For Worse The colossal $3 billion Kárahnjúkar dam, due to be completed this year, will submerge under 150 metres of water a hitherto untouched 57 square km of wilderness, boasting gushing rivers, thundering waterfalls, multi-coloured mountains and mossy highlands ablaze with flowers. The project, designed solely to drive an aluminium smelter further down the valley at Reydalfjordur, has government support and will be paid for by Landsvirkjun, the national power company. The hydroelectricity it generates is contracted for sale for 50 years to the American aluminium giant Alcoa, which is closing two smelters in the US and relocating to Iceland as a cost-cutting measure.

After what it claims were extensive community input and environmental studies, Alcoa is fast completing construction of the Fjarðaál (“aluminum of the fjords”) smelter, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs in Iceland, both in the facility and in supporting industries. Late in March this year, the first ship carrying cargo for the smelter arrived in Reydarfjordur. The Pine Arrow was bringing nearly 40,000 tonnes of alumina from Western Australia, after a voyage of 44 days. It takes almost two tonnes of alumina to produce one tonne of aluminium.

So far so good, it may seem. Four hundred jobs, an addition to the economy and the harnessing of natural power.

Karahnjukar Dam But a movement called Saving Iceland, a coalition of groups opposing further development, is up in arms. The area of the dam is one of the main breeding grounds for reindeer. It is a protected nesting ground for thousands of pink-footed geese and a favourite haunt of the snowy owl, ptarmigan and the majestic gyrfalcon. The rock formations – red, black and all colours of the rainbow – are a unique record of 10,000 years of geological and climatic change, providing clues to scientists worldwide, studying, among other things, global warming. All this is to disappear under water. The environmental impact of the project spreads much wider than this highland wilderness and the fjord below.
